Last month, the New York Times moralized in print over Republican Rep. Joe Wilson's "disrespectful" outburst ("You lie!") during Obama's health care address to Congress. But when a Democrat said the GOP plan for health care is that people should "die quickly" and later compared the current system to the Holocaust, it's not even worthy of a mention in the newspaper.
A Wednesday afternoon post by Jane Lorber on the nytimes.com "Caucus" blog, "G.O.P. Seeks Grayson Apology, or Rebuke," had a dismissive take on Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson's Tuesday insult of Republicans on the House floor, and his incendiary Holocaust follow-up comment when asked to apologize.
If legislative wrist slaps could save Americans from what Republicans and Democrats say is in the other party's health care proposals, Congress would really be in business.
House Republicans are hoping the threat of a punitive resolution -- much like the censure their own Joe Wilson received earlier this month -- can force Florida Representative Alan Grayson to apologize for saying that Republicans want sick Americans to "die quickly."
"It's a very simple plan," Mr. Grayson said in an after-hours speech on the House floor Tuesday, unveiling a poster next to him that read in red and black capital letters, "The Republican health care plan: Don't get sick."
"But I think that the Republicans understand that's not always going to work," he added. "If you get sick, America, the Republican health care plan is this: Die quickly."
....
(Less than two hours later, Mr. Grayson offered an apology of sorts. His remorse was not for Republicans, rather for the dead, he said, comparing the existing health care system to the Holocaust.
("I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven't voted sooner to end this holocaust in America," he said on the House floor Wednesday afternoon.)
A full day after his outburst, Grayson's rants aren't even mentioned in the Thursday print edition, not even as an anecdote in a related article.

Oh, not to worry - NY Times is simply being "slow to cover"

October 1, 2009 - 19:11 ET by OnepersonsopinionRemember when Maureen O'Dowd wrote something like when Joe Wilson said "You lie" he was really saying "You lie, boy"?
I wonder if she'll interpret Grayson's comments (esp about the holocaust) along the same lines?
Too funny...
October 1, 2009 - 20:09 ET by zackteddyYeah, this seems like an even comparison..... not! The house floor is hardly a civilized forum for debate, so how can you compare comments said there with a comment blurted out during a televised Presidential address to both houses of Congress? It doesn't compare at all, but Newsbusters and the like need something to whine about, so things like this become news.
If The Times printed every disrespectful comment said on the House floor they wouldn't have room to report on anything else.
This Times watch column is hilarious. If you go into any endeavor with a rigid, predetermined agenda, you can find whatever you want, I guess.

October 1, 2009 - 20:29 ET by OnepersonsopinionYou mean like when the Times covered Jean Schmidt's comment about, "He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message: that cowards cut and run, Marines never do" back in 2005?
Why is it partisan Republican remarks seem to make the Times; Democrats not so much?
Apples and Oranges
October 1, 2009 - 21:41 ET by zackteddyOnce again it's apples and oranges. That one got more attention because Jean Schmidt lied about the message that Bubp allegedly told her to relay to Congress. In fact, Bubp later said that he never mentioned Murtha by name nor would he ever make a negative comment about a fellow marine. The whole thing was manufactured by Schmidt to snub Murtha.
If you looked for it, I'm sure you'd find plenty of instances that go both ways.
Ummm, yeah right
October 1, 2009 - 22:59 ET by RESTLESS 1It's the vitriol in grayson's screed that bothers me, not where he made it.
He had to do something to get noticed. Anyone ever hear of this grayson clowm before this? Well, I'm sure he is noticed now, and not the way he wanted.

Teddy the troll
October 2, 2009 - 06:10 ET by jazz_fanTeddy, Arianna is looking for you. Go post on HuffPo or at least try to be original. That was quite a zinger, you know where you said something, followed by the word not. Hilarious, man, where do you get this stuff?
Equating opposition to government control of the health care industry and the gutting of the health insurance system to not just holocaust deniers but holocaust supporters is utterly contemptible. If someone runs out of arguments and is losing a debate they begin to attack their opponent, whether it's a high school debate team or knucklehead leftists - probably like you, Teddy.
Obama has been proven to just manufacture and re-imagine the health insurance problems of Americans to get a better soundbite. Are you unwilling to admit even that much? I would agree that calling the President a liar during a televised speech is wrong, but only if the President was not in fact lying. Obama was, he knew it and so did his lapdogs in the MSM, and they tried to cover for him. The worst thing Wilson did was to apologize for speaking up about such a blatant lie.
It's no wonder they attack Fox News and Glenn Beck and O'Reilly, because that's where all the viewers and readers are migrating as they grow tired of spoon-fed pablum instead of actual news. The only way the Times will survive another decade is if it's bought out by Murdoch or gets massive federal assistance. Fortunately, they won't need to change their reporters or editorial staff at all if Obama does take over. They're already in his vest pocket.
