The NY Times Finally Finds a FOX Journalist It Can Respect -- Shepard Smith

Monday's New York Times Business section contained a favorable Bill Carter profile of Fox News anchor Shepard Smith, "Fox News Anchor Draws Ratings, and Ire of Conservative Critics." This marks the only positive view of Fox News I've seen in the Times, if only because Smith is portrayed as a brave, lonely counterpoint to the network's conservative orthodoxy.

Carter predictably portrayed Smith, host of the evening show "The Fox Report," as a lone balanced journalist under siege from hateful, conspiratorial conservatives, and traced his higher profile to statements he made on air during coverage of the Holocaust Museum shooting, without questioning their validity.

(Carter may find the liberal orthodoxy at MSNBC more to his liking; he wrote an approving profile of vitriolic leftist talk show host Keith Olbermann in June 2006.)

On Monday he wrote:

At various points on his Fox News program, the anchor Shepard Smith irritated Rush Limbaugh, teased Glenn Beck and grilled Samuel J. Wurzelbacher (a k a Joe the Plumber) over his attacks on President Obama. But it was not until he forcefully confronted the topic of hateful e-mail -- some from Fox's own viewers -- that he drew fire over his approach.

On June 10, Mr. Smith was in the middle of three hours of coverage of the killing at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, in which officials identified an elderly anti-Semite as the killer. He then mentioned a prior warning by the Department of Homeland Security about right-wing extremist groups and connected that to the angry e-mail messages he had been receiving.

"When a crazy man has walked into a Holocaust museum and shot the security guard, maybe that's an appropriate time to warn people: you've got a crazy person in your life, keep an eye on him," he said in an interview in his Manhattan office last week.

Mr. Smith said he fully anticipated one result of those comments: the nasty e-mail increased.

"Thousands of them," Mr. Smith said. "And I know they don't mean the things they say. I know they don't hate me and want death on my family."

There's no excuse for death wishes, but prominent conservatives like Jonah Goldberg, Michelle Malkin, and Ann Coulter get this kind of hateful email all the time from compassionate liberals, but don't get sympathetic treatment in the Times.

After recognizing Smith's high ratings (one of the few occasions the Times has actually recognizes Fox's high ratings with approval), Carter asked rhetorically:

So why do some Fox viewers believe he does not belong? Maybe because Mr. Smith has established a record that seems antithetical to the image Fox has earned as a purveyor of conservative orthodoxy. He is the "voice of the opposition on some issues," according to Bill Shine, Fox's senior vice president for programming.

The liberal site Media Matters, a watchdog group that often zeroes in on Fox, seems nonplused by its leading anchorman's apparent break from orthodoxy.

And either reporter Carter or host Smith are operating under the mistaken impression that conservative host Rush Limbaugh is a major driver of the conspiracy theory about Obama being born overseas and/or being a Muslim.

Antipathy toward the Obama administration is certainly not hard to locate on Fox, especially on the network's highly rated evening programs. The president himself said of Fox News last week, "You'd be hard pressed if you watched the entire day to find a positive story about me."

He may not be catching Mr. Smith's newscasts. The anchor has taken an unwavering stand against what he calls the "fantasy land" that some critics of Mr. Obama live in.

"It is the reporting of this news organization that Barack Obama is a citizen and he is not a Muslim," Mr. Smith said, touching on a subject -- Mr. Obama's birth status -- that has animated conspiratorial discussion in conservative circles, from relatively obscure far-right Web sites like Atlas Shrugs all the way up to the loudest mainstream conservative voice, Mr. Limbaugh.

Without specifically addressing Mr. Limbaugh (whom he said he enjoys), Mr. Smith said: "An unreasonable comment to me is beginning with a statement that is contrary to fact and moving on from that premise: ‘Barack Obama is not a citizen; he is a Muslim looking to take down the nation.' When you begin with that premise, you are out of bounds."

Carter provided another clue as to how Smith became so admired among liberals:

He also argued against the imprisonment without trial of the terrorism suspect Ali al-Marri, and memorably banged a desk during another debate, saying: "We are America; we don't torture. And the moment that is not the case, I want off the train."

These positions have hardly endeared him to the conservative base. Mr. Limbaugh criticized Mr. Smith after the e-mail episode; so did Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs, who called him a "pompous elitist" and said on the site that he should be fired.

Ironic, that the trashiest

Ironic, that the trashiest tabloid-like personality at FoxNews, next to Geraldo Rivera, who I think cheapens their organization, finds "respect" from the old grey lady herself, The New York Times.

With all due respect to Ms. Geller, Smith may be an elitist, but "pompous elitist" summons up an image that is at odds with Shepard Smith's clownish antics.

Chris... You summed it

Chris...

You summed it well for me regarding Shep, and the NYTs.

Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea. ~Andrew Breitbart

Yes...

Ever since his weeping histrionics in New Orleans I have not been able to watch that revolting little weasel.

If only he were half as smart and witty as he thinks he is.

weakest link in the lineup

Beck ought to be at the seven-spot.  Let 'em trade places.  I don't have it in for Shep, I kinda liked his distressed reporting of Katrina, I just don't watch his show very often.

Smith will be offered a show at CNN...

...where his ratings will at that network's top end, as opposed to the bottom end at Fox...

Maybe They Admire the Way Smith Brutalizes Women

Like that woman he mutilated for the crime of taking "his" parking spot.

Smith is wrong

jessieH            Mr. Obama will not be president as long as his records are sealed. It makes him look like he has something to hide. Like his birth certificate. Why the big secret? Is it possible he isn't qualified to be in office?

Shep is Fox's useful idiot

He doesn't realize that his loose lips consitantly hurt his employer, and by extension himself. When he diminishes his employer, he is diminishing his own stature.

Just the other day, Shep was talking about which city has the higher instances of road rage. Now that was rich. Wonder how he felt reporting on something so near and dear to his own heart. That's like Marion Barry reporting on crackheads. Miami used to be the worst road rage, back when Shep lived there. But now that he moved to NYC, they are the new road rage capital of America.

I can handle him because he

I can handle him because he does play the role of 'straight reporter' rather well...don't have to deal with his ideologies too often.

There again, his show is mostly background noise until the real reporter Neil Cavuto comes on or if there's just nothing else on at either 3 or 7.

I agree...Beck should be on at 7.  My preferred line up would be:

Beck, BOR, Hannity, Greta, Red Eye.  FNN could run the table with that.  They could probably kill the alphabet networks' nightly news if they put Cavuto on later, but not having him come on just as soon as the regular trading day ends is just wrong.

Too bad FNN can't get Rush interested in doing TV again.  They'd absolutely crush all the other news both cable and network....even if he just did an in-studio type deal like Imus and Howard Stern.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

Rush Mini Show

They're showing clips from Rush's Ditto Cam, on Geraldo and regularly on Greta now.  Besides being interviewed occsaionally by Hannity, Rush is interviewed by Greta with surprising frequency - which is great, because Greta lets him talk at length with no interruptions.

What does your comment have to do with anything other than the intention of being annoying?

Shep amuzes me, lord knows

Shep amuzes me, lord knows there is little on TV that's worth watching anyhow. Now you wouldn't want to deprive an old guy of entertainment would you?  Some days right up to 8 p.m. I leave the TV on FNC since there is nothing but crap for programming until then.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

He is such a fake

Shep is a total fake. I couldn't care about his views, or his being a liberal, dem, or hybrid. What I can't stand about him is his theatrics, and his pompous attitude. I lost all respect for him during Katrina, and was alittle upset when they gave him a raise and an extension. I would love to see Beck get his time slot, or both of his slots, and see Smith sent on weekend duty after midnights. Again it's not his politics, it's his corny, arrogant, ignorant rants. Did you see todays show, when he called an Iranian man on his show a " she", when it was a he...Nice job screening a name there make-up boy. I'm sure he's going to  rip someone a new one instead of taking the blame for that mistake, sort of like our new commander in chief. Honestly, he doesn't do justice to the network. The one thing I love about FOX is that they really report both sides and for the most part they are VERY FAIR, even dems like Chris Wallace have the integrity and the class to be fair and real journalists. Smith is an actor...take it hollywood.

Why is it that EVERYTIME a liberal opens their mouth, I feel a sudden urge to hand them a roll of toilet paper?

Trade Smith for Lou Dobbs

FNC had a special report on Iran today. The fact that Shep Smith anchored it seemed to trivialize the Iran protests and deaths.

BW.... A great trade that

BW....

A great trade that would be indeed....throw in Rivers as a sweetner for CNN while Fox is at it.

Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea. ~Andrew Breitbart

I watch Fox almost exclusively, but there...

are two shows I will never DVR.  Shep Smith's and Geraldo Rivera's.  I was channel surfing the other night and Rivera mentioned Ann Coulter would soon be on.  Several segments and commercials later, she finally came on with Kirsten Powers.  Powers was up first and offered her opinion on how Obama is treating the Iraq uprising.  Geraldo could not have been nicer to her and she had her full say.  Then came Ann.  She was starting to explain that our government (Obama) should do the right thing and support the demonstrators, but before she could finish Geraldo cut her off and rudely said, "I disagree".  I immediately changed channels.  Jim Webster

Schlepp Smith, what a clown.

Schlepp Smith, what a clown. That guy should be put on the E network so he can follow that latest antics of Paris Hilton or some other brain dead celeb. Has he ran over anyone lately, like a woman? I would like to smack his fake tan right off his bobble head.

As liberal as Shep Smith

As liberal as Shep Smith can be I'll take him over some other zealot like Anderson Cooper, Rick Sanchez, and Olberdork.

When the people fear the government it's called tyranny, when the government fears the people it's called liberty!

Megyn

I'll tell you who I respect: Megyn Kelly Oh Lord, I respect her!!!!

Re Shemp

I can't bear to watch Shemp. Luckily there are great alternatives, Kudlow on CNBC, and Dobbs on CNN. It's more that just the fact he is a bleeding heart liberal, it's his smarmy and condescending delivery, and the fact that he is just a dumb teleprompter reader. Often he cannot pronounce the words that are in his news copy, so he doesn't write his own material. Any one of the :00 and :30 news update readers can fill his pumps.

Time zones and shows you

Time zones and shows you are mentioning, along with cable/satellitte vary on who is on against Shep ....all I know is I am listening to anybody but his whining arse on Talk Radio.

Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea. ~Andrew Breitbart

Remember his blooper

Remember his blooper about navel gazing.  How totally stupid was that!  I didn't hear too much about it though.

Shep Smith

I find Shep usually annoying and a bit of a drama queen (no pun intended) but occasionally he has a good line. I think he's probably a quick wit and might be an interesting conversationalist in a casual setting, but when delivering the news, he has the uncanny knack for making a mountain out of a molehill. And he needs to stay out of the tanning bed for a while- he's starting to look like George Hamilton ("and I say that with a staunch record of heterosexuality" to borrow a George Costanza line...)

This explains why I have never been...

a fan of Shepard Smith or "Shemp" Smith as "The Great One", Mark Levin calls him.  He tries hard to be cute and clever but comes off as a phony.  My dear departed mother would have fallen for his schtict, but not me.  Jim Webster

Shep has definite Chrissy

Shep has definite Chrissy Matthews tendencies toward "the one".
