Sunday's New York Times featured a Vietnam flashback, not to 1969, but 2004, as reporter Kate Zernike once again reported for duty in defense of John Kerry, in the former presidential candidate's Ahab-like quest for revenge against the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, whose questioning of his Vietnam War citations wounded him in the 2004 campaign.
The background: Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens issued a challenge last November -- $1 million to anyone who could disprove a single charge the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth made against Sen. John Kerry. A group of Kerry's Vietnam crewmates have sent a package to Pickens (and apparently to certain media outlets as well), including a 12-page letter and a 42-page attachment of Kerry's Navy records.
Zernike wrote it up as "Veterans Rebut Swift Boat Charges Against Kerry -- Say Their Service Was 'Tarnished.'"
Neither Zernike nor any other media outlet named those veterans or provide any other details as to the contents of the package.
In the past, Zernike has fought alongside Kerry against the Swift Boat Vets, and her Sunday piece was of the same caliber, portraying Kerry's Vietnam-era allies as a loyal Band of Brothers and his (more numerous) Vietnam-era opponents as sleazy liars whose charges have been "undermined."
For most people, "Swift boat" has become a political verb, a synonym for the kind of attack that helped destroy the presidential campaign of Senator John Kerry in 2004.
But for a group of Vietnam veterans at the center of the attacks, it is still a fresh fight.
On Friday, the group, who served with Mr. Kerry in Vietnam, sent a letter to T. Boone Pickens, the billionaire Texas oilman who helped finance the 2004 attack advertisements, taking him up on a challenge he issued last November: that he would give $1 million to anyone who could disprove a single charge the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth made against Mr. Kerry.
The letter-writers served alongside Mr. Kerry during the events that the Swift boat group insisted he had embellished or made up to win his military decorations.
....
In a 12-page letter -- with a 42-page attachment of military records to support their case -- they rebut not one but several of the accusations of the Swift boat group.
The veterans offer to go through Mr. Kerry's record and the video with Mr. Pickens "page by page, frame by frame." And they demand an apology, to them "and to the American people."
Of course, none of this is new. Extensive news media accounts undermined the Swift boat charges in 2004, pointing out that some of the Swift boat critics had written statements in Vietnam lauding Mr. Kerry for extraordinary bravery in the incidents they later said he made up. One critic had himself received a medal for heroism during a hail of gunfire he later claimed Mr. Kerry had concocted to win his third Purple Heart.
But that did not blunt the political impact.
A Los Angeles Times blog post sheds a little more light, noting the package focuses not on all the questions surrounding two of Kerry's three Purple Hearts and his Bronze Star, but on an incident in which Kerry's fleet was ambushed on the Bay Hap River (the "teenager in a loincloth" event), an action for which Kerry was awarded the Silver Star:
The 15-page letter and 42 pages of Navy reports and other documentation focus principally on a 1969 engagement in which three boats under Kerry's supervision counterattacked after an ambush on a tributary of the Bay Hap River.
Kerry won a Silver Star for his actions, but critics contended he had exaggerated the incident and his own heroism. In this week's response, Kerry's crew offers details, after-action reports and the medal citation to prove that Kerry led with valor.
As case expert Tom Maguire noted, regarding the events leading to Kerry's Silver Star, the Swift Boat Vets were simply pointing out discrepancies between Kerry's medal citation and Kerry's own recounting of the event.

I thought the ads were placed by GWB and THE RNC.
Also, the quote: To most people, should be amended to "Most People in the Media....refer to Swift Boating.." Parroting the left.
I don't ever remember hearing the MSM saying a judge was "Borked" or waring the public that GWBs SCOTUS nominees would be "Borked". Despite it being a commonly known and used term even among those left of center.
Funny, how the media decides which terms become engrained, not.

Kerry's big military lie
June 24, 2008 - 15:05 ET by JimObergDon't forget the biggest lie -- about the nature of his discharge.
His 'honorable discharge' is dated 1978, not the actual year he was discharged.
That's after the Carter presidential pardon of draft dodgers and other less-than-honorable dischargees.
According to law, anybody could apply for an upgraded discharge and the original would be destroyed.
It's a compelling implication that this is exactly what Kerry did, based on that date on the form, as I saw it posted on his campaign website.
Or has this 'swift-boating' smear been debunked somewhere else? <grin>

Everytime I hear "Swiftboated" what immediately comes to my mind is someone CAUGHT IN A BOLD FACED LIE and called on it. GOD BLESS every single one of those men for stepping up and saving this beautiful country from a BACK STABBING TRAITOR!!!!
Like Murtha.....Kerry will never be thought of as a true patriot of this country. A Marine/Naval Officer that loves his country. They both blew whatever honor they had the very moment they turned their backs on the very people that serve with them and after them for their own political gains.

The other is Stephen Braun of the LA Times who, interestingly enough, received his Kerry records-designee status some 2 weeks after Kranish and Johnson perhaps suggesting some Kerry trepidation as to his "reliability".
Perhaps Kerry's concern may have been legitimate, as Braun let slip the following in his report that few have made note of...
<i>A less flattering portrait of Kerry shows up in other documents in the file. Correspondence from Navy officials reveals that soon after leaving Vietnam, Kerry took pains to make sure that all his wartime commendations were documented in his military file.</i>

Look, "rebutting" the charges is not "disproving" them. If they had disproved any of the charges, Zernicke would have said so.
"Swiftboating" means exposing exaggerated claims using factual, eyewitness accounts. Kerry was a showboater who got what he deserved - swiftboating. Not only did he fake injuries to get out of service early, he returned and slandered every American serviceman in Congressional hearings. Then he pretended to throw someone else's medals over the fence. Has John Kerry ever stopped his fakery? Apparently not.

French
"The first person seen in
the first Swift Boat ad broadcast on cable television, French made the initial
televised allegation against Kerry: "I served with John Kerry. He's lying
about his record."
In preparation for the
ad, French, a senior deputy district attorney in Oregon
and registered Republican, signed a sworn affidavit for the Swift Boat Vets
asserting that Kerry received his
Purple Heart "from negligently self-inflicted wounds in the absence of
hostile fire." A fundamental requirement of any affidavit is that the
person signing it must have personal knowledge of the matters involved. In
fact, the affidavit French signed declared, "I do hereby swear, that all
facts and statements contained in this affidavit are true and correct and
within my personal knowledge and belief." (Emphasis
added) But in an interview with The Oregonian newspaper of
Portland,
French freely admitted he had no firsthand knowledge of the events surrounding
Kerry's medals and that his information came from secondhand accounts from
"friends."
Nearly three dozen local
attorneys quickly filed complaints with the Oregon State Bar, complaining that
French, a practicing prosecutor,
never should have signed an affidavit about
events that he knew nothing about. The county prosecutor's office launched an
investigation, and French was quickly reprimanded for improperly using office resources to criticize Kerry. The
office also discovered that French had previously lied to his superior about
having an affair with a co-worker, an affair that would have cost French his job. Yet French spent
the summer of 2004 publicly labeling Kerry a liar based on nothing more than secondhand gossip."

June 24, 2008 - 20:27 ET by WingletDriverwhile completely ignoring the irrefutable and most damning evidence.
The primary complaint that SBVT raised against Kerry was his testimony and activities after he returned from Viet Nam. The media seems ignorant of the videos of Kerry in front of Congress claiming he had witnessed and participated in widespread war crimes. Kerry later claims he had exaggerated these allegations. Too bad this anti-American screed is on tape.
Also, Kerry throwing his medals over the fence at the White House in another anti-US rally is caught on tape. Kerry's excuse: they weren't his medals, they were someone else's. Great excuse.
So while the media is focused on whether Kerry deserved his medals they are ignoring the video evidence of his traitorous activities. This is akin to having video evidence of someone committing rape but claiming that the defendant is being impugned because nobody saw him jay-walking.
Pickens Blows Them Off
June 25, 2008 - 16:30 ET by Del DolemonteThis broke earlier this afternoon
Dallas billionaire T. Boone Pickens has rejected contentions from 10 men who served in Vietnam with John Kerry that information in the controversial Swift Vets and POWs for Truth ads during the 2004 presidential campaign were false.
That means Mr. Kerry’s crewmates won’t be paid the $1 million that Mr. Pickens offered last fall to anyone who could prove that the ads contained falsehoods.
“Unfortunately, key aspects of my offer of $1 million have not been accurately reported,” Mr. Pickens wrote. “My offer, reiterated in a letter to Senator Kerry not long after the challenge was made, was to pay $1 million for information that would prove any of the ads — which I helped fund — inaccurate. In reviewing your material, none of the information you provide speaks specifically to the issues contained in the ads, and, as a result, does not qualify for the $1 million.”
“I guess now we know the ‘T’ in T. Boone doesn’t stand for ‘truth,’’’ said Del Sandusky, one of the crewmen who signed the letter to Mr. Pickens. “His response is slicker than an oil spill. I really hoped we could’ve taken him at his word, but now he’s … running away from his own bet. … Mr. Pickens hasn’t heard the last from us. We won’t rest until he admits the truth that he bankrolled a big lie.”
The ads focused on Sen. Kerry’s anti-war activities after his tour of duty and the merits of his medals for heroism.
On Thursday, the crewmates sent a letter to Mr. Pickens accepting the challenge and provided some documentation. They offered to provide even more and requested that Mr. Pickens give the $1 million to a veterans group of their choice.
In November, Sen. Kerry took up Mr. Pickens’ challenge and offered to debate him on the subject in Dallas and Massachusetts.
The ads that Mr. Pickens helped fund from the Swift Vets and POWs for Truth group, formerly known as Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, were devastating to Mr. Kerry’s bid for the White House. He ran on his record as a decorated war veteran, having won several medals.
But the swift boat ads questioned his service.
When Sen. Kerry didn’t immediately address the content of the ads, they began to raise questions with some voters, analysts said.
Since then, the term “swift boating” has come to refer to the distortion of a political candidate’s record.
Del, that should read 10 men
June 25, 2008 - 16:42 ET by bassndudeDel, that should read 10 men who claimed to have served in Vietnam with Kerry.
Lets see, how many men served in Vietnam? 9,087,000 served from August 5, 1964 to May 7, 1975. 2,709,918 Americans served in uniform in Vietnam.
1,713,823 of those who served in Vietnam were still alive as of August, 1995. During that same year, the number of Americans falsely claiming to have served in-country was: 9,492,958.
As of the current Census taken during August, 2000, the surviving U.S. Vietnam Veteran population estimate is: 1,002,511. This is hard to believe, losing nearly 711,000 between '95 and '00. That's 390 per day. During this Census count, the number of Americans falsely claiming to have served in-country is: 13,853,027. By this census, FOUR OUT OF FIVE who claim to be Vietnam vets are not. The Department of Defense Vietnam War Service Index officially provided by The War Library originally reported with errors that 2,709,918 U.S. military personnel as having served in-country. Corrections and confirmations to this errored index resulted in the addition of 358 U.S. military personnel confirmed to have served in Vietnam but not originally listed by the Department of Defense. (All names are currently on file and accessible 24/7/365).
So in retrospect, the odds of those ten not being in Vietnam at all are higher than them ever setting foot in that country.
Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!
