NY Times's Zernike: Dishonest Charges by Swift Boat Vets Have Been 'Undermined'

Sunday's New York Times featured a Vietnam flashback, not to 1969, but 2004, as reporter Kate Zernike once again reported for duty in defense of John Kerry, in the former presidential candidate's Ahab-like quest for revenge against the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, whose questioning of his Vietnam War citations wounded him in the 2004 campaign.

The background: Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens issued a challenge last November -- $1 million to anyone who could disprove a single charge the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth made against Sen. John Kerry. A group of Kerry's Vietnam crewmates have sent a package to Pickens (and apparently to certain media outlets as well), including a 12-page letter and a 42-page attachment of Kerry's Navy records.

Zernike wrote it up as "Veterans Rebut Swift Boat Charges Against Kerry -- Say Their Service Was 'Tarnished.'"

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Neither Zernike nor any other media outlet named those veterans or provide any other details as to the contents of the package.

In the past, Zernike has fought alongside Kerry against the Swift Boat Vets, and her Sunday piece was of the same caliber, portraying Kerry's Vietnam-era allies as a loyal Band of Brothers and his (more numerous) Vietnam-era opponents as sleazy liars whose charges have been "undermined."

For most people, "Swift boat" has become a political verb, a synonym for the kind of attack that helped destroy the presidential campaign of Senator John Kerry in 2004.

But for a group of Vietnam veterans at the center of the attacks, it is still a fresh fight.

On Friday, the group, who served with Mr. Kerry in Vietnam, sent a letter to T. Boone Pickens, the billionaire Texas oilman who helped finance the 2004 attack advertisements, taking him up on a challenge he issued last November: that he would give $1 million to anyone who could disprove a single charge the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth made against Mr. Kerry.

The letter-writers served alongside Mr. Kerry during the events that the Swift boat group insisted he had embellished or made up to win his military decorations.

....

In a 12-page letter -- with a 42-page attachment of military records to support their case -- they rebut not one but several of the accusations of the Swift boat group.

The veterans offer to go through Mr. Kerry's record and the video with Mr. Pickens "page by page, frame by frame." And they demand an apology, to them "and to the American people."

Of course, none of this is new. Extensive news media accounts undermined the Swift boat charges in 2004, pointing out that some of the Swift boat critics had written statements in Vietnam lauding Mr. Kerry for extraordinary bravery in the incidents they later said he made up. One critic had himself received a medal for heroism during a hail of gunfire he later claimed Mr. Kerry had concocted to win his third Purple Heart.

But that did not blunt the political impact.

A Los Angeles Times blog post sheds a little more light, noting the package focuses not on all the questions surrounding two of Kerry's three Purple Hearts and his Bronze Star, but on an incident in which Kerry's fleet was ambushed on the Bay Hap River (the "teenager in a loincloth" event), an action for which Kerry was awarded the Silver Star:

The 15-page letter and 42 pages of Navy reports and other documentation focus principally on a 1969 engagement in which three boats under Kerry's supervision counterattacked after an ambush on a tributary of the Bay Hap River.

Kerry won a Silver Star for his actions, but critics contended he had exaggerated the incident and his own heroism. In this week's response, Kerry's crew offers details, after-action reports and the medal citation to prove that Kerry led with valor.

As case expert Tom Maguire noted, regarding the events leading to Kerry's Silver Star, the Swift Boat Vets were simply pointing out discrepancies between Kerry's medal citation and Kerry's own recounting of the event.

"T. Boone Pickens, the billionaire Texas oilman who helped finance the 2004 attack advertisements"

I thought the ads were placed by GWB and THE RNC.

Also, the quote:  To most people, should be amended to "Most People in the Media....refer to Swift Boating.."  Parroting the left.

I don't ever remember hearing the MSM saying a judge was "Borked" or waring the public that GWBs SCOTUS nominees would be "Borked".  Despite it being a commonly known and used term even among those left of center.

Funny, how the media decides which terms become engrained, not.

Poor Kerry. Poor Gore. Poor Hillary. When will this Democrat/Victim Parade of Tears end?

Kerry: get over it already. You still have a $165,000 a year part-time job last time I looked. And your constituents in Morono-chusetts will keep re-electing you until you die. You can be the next Frank 'The Cadaver' Lautenberg if you play your cards right.

And finally: true heroes don't have to run all over the place like crack-deranged squirrels yelling "Look at me, I'm a hero again!"

But...but...but...I thought it was unburdening one's conscience and finally telling the truth, when they said later that Kerry had lied. And we should believe their later claims.

Help

Lots of Vietnam vet's (me included) donated to the Swift Boat Vet's because they told the truth about a traitor. When you have the lie that he was sent to Cambodia by a president who wasn't president at the time why would anyone try to defend the known liar and public traitor? Why does no one else remember the mission to Cambodia, was he a lone wolf, kill them by the thousands comando? Na, just a liar who bragged to his friends and couldn't withdraw the lies.

I actually feel sorry for his family, living with a known liar and traitor could lead to drug abuse.

Undermined? Undermined = not refuted.

That's just the pandering lefty way to say it.

Those who believe in nothing will believe anything.

Kerry's big military lie

Don't forget the biggest lie -- about the nature of his discharge.

His 'honorable discharge' is dated 1978, not the actual year he was discharged.

That's after the Carter presidential pardon of draft dodgers and other less-than-honorable dischargees.

According to law, anybody could apply for an upgraded discharge and the original would be destroyed.

It's a compelling implication that this is exactly what Kerry did, based on that date on the form, as I saw it posted on his campaign website.

Or has this 'swift-boating' smear been debunked somewhere else? <grin>

Besides the NYT.....has

Besides the NYT.....has anyone seen Kerry's military records?

I believe I remember something about his form 180(form to request your military docs)being released....but never heard anything about it.

Amazes me how someone is elected into the senate who is so guilty of treason. Then again like someone pointed out here earlier.....would be from a state like Mass.

Everytime I hear "Swiftboated" what immediately comes to my mind is someone CAUGHT IN A BOLD FACED LIE and called on it. GOD BLESS every single one of those men for stepping up and saving this beautiful country from a BACK STABBING TRAITOR!!!!

Like Murtha.....Kerry will never be thought of as a true patriot of this country. A Marine/Naval Officer that loves his country. They both blew whatever honor they had the very moment they turned their backs on the very people that serve with them and after them for their own political gains.

HOW DARE YOU!!!

How either one of these pieces of crap could ever look a Military person in the eyes again is beyond me.....then again....who am I kidding?

The NYT Probably Hasn't Seen Them Either

Kerry released the complete records to only 3 reporters-Kranish of the Boston Globe, a guy from A-PEE, and one from the La-La Times.

You'd do well...

...to remember their names.  The AP "journalist" is Glen Johnson, a favorite go-to guy for the Kennedy/Kerry/Obama machine.  It was Johnson who got in Romney's face inre the allegation of PAC officials "directing" Romney's campaign and it was Johnson (if my googling is correct) who was given the inside scoop on Kennedy's recent cancer diagnosis.

The other is Stephen Braun of the LA Times who, interestingly enough, received his Kerry records-designee status some 2 weeks after Kranish and Johnson perhaps suggesting some Kerry trepidation as to his "reliability".

Perhaps Kerry's concern may have been legitimate, as Braun let slip the following in his report that few have made note of...

<i>A less flattering portrait of Kerry shows up in other documents in the file. Correspondence from Navy officials reveals that soon after leaving Vietnam, Kerry took pains to make sure that all his wartime commendations were documented in his military file.</i>

Look, "rebutting" the charges is not "disproving" them. If they had disproved any of the charges, Zernicke would have said so.

"Swiftboating" means exposing exaggerated claims using factual, eyewitness accounts. Kerry was a showboater who got what he deserved - swiftboating. Not only did he fake injuries to get out of service early, he returned and slandered every American serviceman in Congressional hearings. Then he pretended to throw someone else's medals over the fence. Has John Kerry ever stopped his fakery? Apparently not.

T. Boone Pickes still has his million bucks, Kerry is still a liar, Zernicke is still a media whore.

Well, to

Well, to me, "Swiftboating" is speaking your mind about a former comrade who had disgraced himself and his service.

Nearly all the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth simply did this.  But in todays PC Culture, that is not allowed anymore - unless you wish to tarnish your country and its military.  Speaking the truth in its defense is not permitted.

I see Ted Samply from that

I see Ted Samply from that Vietnam vets against McCain site that was posted there all the time. He's well-known around here as an activist of sorts. Frankly though, I'm not sure what his motivation is. He was against Kerry in 2004, now this time around he's against McCain.

The story behind this Zernike agitprop...

This story (perhaps with some minor variants...I haven't compared) was first buried in a NY Times political blog (The Caucus) ( http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/21/still-fighting-the-swift-boat-battle ) on June 21 just as it was similarly buried by every other media organization to include an originating Boston Globe op-ed on June 20. (  http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2008/06/20/t_boone_show_us_the_money/ )

The June 23 resuscitation you reference is Zernike's original on life support, which was all-but DOA.

Jon Carry

Katy,

When I was your age I believed many lies and propaganda including some that Jon Carry told. There was and is a concerted effort to steal our history and future away using his sort of propaganda! It's all total B$.

The Swiftboaters are debunking the lies of Jon Carry and his comrades.

Sail away, sail away, sail away

God bless Karl Rove for creating the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth concept, the Creative Response Concepts PR firm for fleshing it out and T. Boone Pickens for funding the enterprise to the tune of $3,000,000. Without their collective energies, monies and genious, the nation back in 2004 would have been negatively focused on Bush’s war record and not Kerry’s. Not a good thing, to say the least.

In any event, Mr. Pickens should spend a few more million to keep these noble sailors on board the good ship ‘R’. Some of them have been squawking to the media trying to raise “funds” to defend themselves against repeated "character assassinations." My guess is that when the money dried up, the good times sailed away and our noble seamen felt mothballed. Hey, there is a new election coming up and now is no time for honesty, especially from the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. I say to Mr. Pickens, even if you do not want to fund a new 527, pay these guys off once and for all so they can set their sails to the land of QUIET.

God bless Karl Rove for

God bless Karl Rove for creating the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth

Actually, the organization was founded by John o'Neill who was a Swift Boat veteran.

Without their collective energies, monies and genious, the nation back in 2004 would have been negatively focused on Bush’s war record and not Kerry’s.

Well, that is hard to assume since John Kerry approached the stage for his first address to the Democrat national Convention with the ill-advised "Present for duty" salute.

Being that he was a notorious VVAW fraud, it would be like Mumia Abu Jamal approaching the Fraternal Order of Police Convention and holding up a power salute

Some of them have been squawking to the media trying to raise “funds” to defend themselves against repeated "character assassinations."

As honorable men, many have been skewered by members of the press ala what this post refers to and DO likely need support.

My guess is that when the money dried up, the good times sailed away and our noble seamen felt mothballed.

Do you have proof that they did what they did for profit rather deep seated feelings regarding the issue?

Hey, there is a new election coming up and now is no time for honesty, especially from the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

Please prove lack of honesty on their behalf.

Honesty in question? For sure!

Many conservative pundits, when dissecting such issues, have observed; “follow the money trail.” I prefer the analogy of “simple math.” In this case, 1 + 1 + 1 = 3

Karl Rove (upside-down spin cycle strategy genius) + Creative Response Concepts PR Firm (deals chiefly with Republican strategies) + T. Boone Pickens (very wealthy, get it while you can Republican) = Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

Now I grant you, John O’Neill was a superb front man for the SBVFT. He is also a proven liar, specifically on this issue. http://www.sourcewat... Any good 527 should have one.

Do you really believe that a bunch of swift boaters got together and decided “on conscience” that they should contact Karl Rove, Creative Response Concepts and/or T. Boone Pickens to say; “Hey give us some dough and we will start a negative buzz on Kerry? If you do, then back to elementary math class with you.

May I also suggest you write a check to support these fine seamen? You can mail it to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (sic) care of Creative Response Concepts. You’ll find the firm's address on the web. I am sure your money will be well spent.

Many conservative pundits,

So, using you rlogic, I can assume that The Dems support AQ and AQ supports the Dems?  THANKS!!!!!

Now I grant you, John O’Neill was a superb front man for the SBVFT.

I imagine he would be since he founded it.  Any other analysis simply shows conspiro undertones.  Did Rove kill Kennedy as well?

He is also a proven liar,

Please prove in you rown words that the charges O'Neill made in his book differ from the truth.

Didn't Kerry lead the VVAW?

Didn't he lead the Winter Soldier event (Wanna TALK ABOUT LIES, son)

Do you really believe that a bunch of swift boaters got together and decided “on conscience”

That they opposed someone they felt sold them out?  SURE!  I would.

May I also suggest you write a check to support these fine seamen? You can mail it to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (sic) care of Creative Response Concepts. You’ll find the firm's address on the web. I am sure your money will be well spent.

It certainly was last time...  now the whole world realizes that Kerry did many dishonorable things (which raises his standing amongst liberals - naturally).

1.)  Decided to volunteer for service on Swift boats in order to pad a military record ala JFK.

2.)  Spent as minimal a time in the AOR as possible, seeking an out by purposely gaining three purple hearts following a gaining an appropriate write up for his Silver Star citation.

3.)  Upon returning to the US, he realized his "War Hero" plan would not cut it in politics so immediately began the anti-war phase of his political existance.  To do it and gain as much publicity as possible, he decided simply being anti-war would not cut it and began the Winter Soldier year of infamy - bad mouthing his comrades, seeking defeat for his nation.

4.)  Upon the US public realizing the Anti-war mess was just that, a dispicable mess, he began polishing up his image and doing the "John Kerry, War Hero" Phase II.  Hence seeking Honorable discharge, re-dislaying medals, and doing the "John Kerry - Reporting for Duty" fiasco.

Now that we all know this, we realize he is what he is - a self interested dishonorable weasel.

LOL!

"The first person seen in
the first Swift Boat ad broadcast on cable television, French made the initial
televised allegation against Kerry: "I served with John Kerry. He's lying
about his record."

In preparation for the
ad, French, a senior deputy district attorney in Oregon
and registered Republican, signed a sworn affidavit for the Swift Boat Vets
asserting that Kerry received his
Purple Heart "from negligently self-inflicted wounds in the absence of
hostile fire." A fundamental requirement of any affidavit is that the
person signing it must have personal knowledge of the matters involved. In
fact, the affidavit French signed declared, "I do hereby swear, that all
facts and statements contained in this affidavit are true and correct and
within my personal knowledge and belief." (Emphasis
added) But in an interview with The Oregonian newspaper of
Portland,
French freely admitted he had no firsthand knowledge of the events surrounding
Kerry's medals and that his information came from secondhand accounts from
"friends."

Nearly three dozen local
attorneys quickly filed complaints with the Oregon State Bar, complaining that
French, a practicing prosecutor,
never should have signed an affidavit about
events that he knew nothing about. The county prosecutor's office launched an
investigation, and French was quickly reprimanded for improperly using office resources to criticize Kerry. The
office also discovered that French had previously lied to his superior about
having an affair with a co-worker, an affair that would have cost French his job. Yet French spent
the summer of 2004 publicly labeling Kerry a liar based on nothing more than secondhand gossip."

did the doctor lie

who treated Kerry's "wound" and told him to get his butt out of his office when asked if he could get a PH for it? Why did Kerry resubmit after the doc DEROSed and had his word taken for it as he was an officer and "wouldn't lie". Why has he still refused to release his medical records...ALL OF THEM?

Only a lawyer could like

Only a lawyer could like your framing of this argument.

You are not saying that Kerry did not do what is specified, only that legally there is no standing?

Only a lawyer....

Nitpicking the small stuff . . .

while completely ignoring the irrefutable and most damning evidence.

The primary complaint that SBVT raised against Kerry was his testimony and activities after he returned from Viet Nam.  The media seems ignorant of the videos of Kerry in front of Congress claiming he had witnessed and participated in widespread war crimes.  Kerry later claims he had exaggerated these allegations.  Too bad this anti-American screed is on tape.

Also, Kerry throwing his medals over the fence at the White House in another anti-US rally is caught on tape.  Kerry's excuse: they weren't his medals, they were someone else's.  Great excuse.

So while the media is focused on whether Kerry deserved his medals they are ignoring the video evidence of his traitorous activities.  This is akin to having video evidence of someone committing rape but claiming that the defendant is being impugned because nobody saw him jay-walking.

Pickens Blows Them Off

This broke earlier this afternoon

Dallas billionaire T. Boone Pickens has rejected contentions from 10 men who served in Vietnam with John Kerry that information in the controversial Swift Vets and POWs for Truth ads during the 2004 presidential campaign were false.

That means Mr. Kerry’s crewmates won’t be paid the $1 million that Mr. Pickens offered last fall to anyone who could prove that the ads contained falsehoods.

“Unfortunately, key aspects of my offer of $1 million have not been accurately reported,” Mr. Pickens wrote. “My offer, reiterated in a letter to Senator Kerry not long after the challenge was made, was to pay $1 million for information that would prove any of the ads — which I helped fund — inaccurate. In reviewing your material, none of the information you provide speaks specifically to the issues contained in the ads, and, as a result, does not qualify for the $1 million.”

“I guess now we know the ‘T’ in T. Boone doesn’t stand for ‘truth,’’’ said Del Sandusky, one of the crewmen who signed the letter to Mr. Pickens. “His response is slicker than an oil spill. I really hoped we could’ve taken him at his word, but now he’s … running away from his own bet. … Mr. Pickens hasn’t heard the last from us. We won’t rest until he admits the truth that he bankrolled a big lie.”

The ads focused on Sen. Kerry’s anti-war activities after his tour of duty and the merits of his medals for heroism.

On Thursday, the crewmates sent a letter to Mr. Pickens accepting the challenge and provided some documentation. They offered to provide even more and requested that Mr. Pickens give the $1 million to a veterans group of their choice.

In November, Sen. Kerry took up Mr. Pickens’ challenge and offered to debate him on the subject in Dallas and Massachusetts.

The ads that Mr. Pickens helped fund from the Swift Vets and POWs for Truth group, formerly known as Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, were devastating to Mr. Kerry’s bid for the White House. He ran on his record as a decorated war veteran, having won several medals.

But the swift boat ads questioned his service.

When Sen. Kerry didn’t immediately address the content of the ads, they began to raise questions with some voters, analysts said.

Since then, the term “swift boating” has come to refer to the distortion of a political candidate’s record.

Del, that should read 10 men

Del, that should read 10 men who claimed to have served in Vietnam with Kerry.

Lets see, how many men served in Vietnam? 9,087,000 served from August 5, 1964 to May 7, 1975. 2,709,918 Americans served in uniform in Vietnam.

1,713,823 of those who served in Vietnam were still alive as of August, 1995. During that same year, the number of Americans falsely claiming to have served in-country was: 9,492,958.

As of the current Census taken during August, 2000, the surviving U.S. Vietnam Veteran population estimate is: 1,002,511. This is hard to believe, losing nearly 711,000 between '95 and '00. That's 390 per day. During this Census count, the number of Americans falsely claiming to have served in-country is: 13,853,027. By this census, FOUR OUT OF FIVE who claim to be Vietnam vets are not. The Department of Defense Vietnam War Service Index officially provided by The War Library originally reported with errors that 2,709,918 U.S. military personnel as having served in-country. Corrections and confirmations to this errored index resulted in the addition of 358 U.S. military personnel confirmed to have served in Vietnam but not originally listed by the Department of Defense. (All names are currently on file and accessible 24/7/365).

So in retrospect, the odds of those ten not being in Vietnam at all are higher than them ever setting foot in that country.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

@bassndude:

Do those numbers also apply to those who claimed to be Viet Nam vets as part of SBVFT?

Well...

As I said in an earlier post on this thread, we've got a live pro-Kerry SBV on the thread over at Power Line. If you want to venture over and see what he has to say, please do so. He's kind of funny, but doesn't answer the questions we ask him.
