Fred Thompson Takes Crack at NYT

The New York Times's Michael Cooper and Michael Luo covered the Republican debate Thursday night in Myrtle Beach, S.C., hitting the theme of a "faltering" Fred Thompson, lashing out in a desperate bid to salvage his campaign.

"Fred D. Thompson tried to salvage his faltering presidential campaign at a debate Thursday night with a barrage of sharp attacks on the 'liberal' policies of Mike Huckabee, the fellow Southerner whom he clearly sees as a rival in the South Carolina primary.

"The performance by Mr. Thompson, which including several pointed one-liners, capped a debate that showed the altered terrain of the Republican field as it moved beyond contests in Iowa and New Hampshire."

The Times portrayed Thompson as an aggressor and Mike Huckabee turning the other cheek.

"Mr. Thompson then lit into Mr. Huckabee, the former Baptist preacher and Arkansas governor who won the Iowa caucus, for wanting to close the prison at Guantánamo Bay, for supporting what he called 'taxpayer-funded programs for illegals' and for wanting to sign a law restricting smoking. 'That's not the model of the Reagan coalition, that's the model of the Democratic Party,' he said."

Huckabee indeed favored free in-state tuition for illegal immigrant as governor of Arkansas.

"Mr. Huckabee, for his part, responded with trademark humor. 'The Air Force has a saying that says if you're not catching flak, you're not over the target,' he said. 'I'm catching the flak; I must be over the target.'"

Maybe the Times is peeved at Thompson for this crack he made at the debate (which the Times did mention):

"You can tell that the news is good coming out of Iraq because you read so little about it in The New York Times."

'I'm catching the flak; I

'I'm catching the flak; I must be over the target.'"

Fred Thompson can apply that too....if he is catching so muck flak from the NYT, he must, indeed, be "over the target."

oh well

This does not surprise me. I'd be more surprised if NYT actually gave him a compliment.

NYT and the truth

Notice that the Times never questioned whether or not Thompson was truthful...they just did not like the fact that he was so abrupt with the truth...and so it is with all liberals.

Sometimes the truth is painful so liberals would rather whitewash it or just ignore it.

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.
Thompson/Rice

In my opinion, Thompson won

In my opinion, Thompson won the debate last night with his boldness, rather than simply posturing like the rest of the candidates.

Good to see this morning that the Times stock is STILL circling the toilet bowl....

What I saw...

Last night I saw 4 pandering politicians, 1 loon, and a real leader.

Fred was the obvious leader.

Rush Limbaugh stated that of the top 5 Republicans running for the presidency, only one was a true conservative. http://www.fred08.com/

Just more disinformation

I'm surprised just how strong the msm influence still is. First they start questioning (suggestion by question) if Thompson is lazy and then confirm it by ignoring his campaign. And that stunt they pulled at the Politico right before Iowa just reinforced this image of him. They know that most real conservatives see Thompson as their only candidate at this point and that he is electable. So they go goo goo for Huckabee and the "come back kid" McCain and act like Thompson is hanging by a thread.

I know I won't vote for a McCain or Huckabee because I don't vote for liberals. Hang in there Fred.

Way to go, Fred! The

Way to go, Fred!

The Rocky Mountain Collegian: Illustrating Idiocy

I hope you are speaking

I hope you are speaking about a primary and not the general election.  I will take a McCain and/or Huckabee (or any one of the Republicans, for that matter) any day over any of the far-left Democrat clones.

lotr

I hate to say it but I mean the general election as well. I don't vote for liberals. Bush has been very liberal when it comes to US sovereignty issues, immigration, and spending. IMHO these are so serious today that nothing else will matter if we don't fix them. With something like amnesty we would no longer have the political power to stop the global socialist tide. With the value of the dollar and cost of oil we cannot afford to spend like we have in his administration.

If a liberal republican is picked this time I'm just going to leave the party. I've already heard the argument that any R is better than a D and I voted for Bush. It didn't seem to pan out and the tide continued so it obviously was bs.

Thompson was the best man

Thompson was the best man standing last night...

Period.

Of course I'm prejudiced.

I loved the blast he shot towards the NYT's last night...of course the job he did on the Huckster was about time and much needed, way past due....much to the msm's chagrin.

He got numerous good lines and points in last night...

Go Fred Go!

I'm not sure about Fred

But he sure did the Republican Party a good turn by putting it to Huckabee.

scared

The dems (aka - the MSM) are scared of Fred. They know that real conservative ideas will just fry them. Any of the other candidates they are sure they can beat. Fred is the one!
