NYT Shows Anger at Beaten Dems as Bush's Wiretapping Bill Sails Through Congress

In December 2005, the New York Times broke the story of the National Security Agency's monitoring of communications between people in America and terror suspects overseas. Many say the revelations hurt the anti-terrorist program. Over the weekend, the House and Senate passed, by surprisingly bipartisan votes, changes to the terrorist surveillance measure that left many liberals angry at the Democratic Congress's betrayal of civil liberties.

The Times seems rather disappointed in the Democrats as well.

Reporter Jim Rutenberg's Tuesday "news analysis," "Wielding the Threat of Terrorism, Bush Outmaneuvers the Democrats," gave Bush his due as a political wizard, but his tone betrayed frustration.

"Until last weekend, President Bush had repeatedly fallen short in seven months of battles with a Democratic-led Congress that would not give him what he wanted on immigration or education, health care or energy policy.

"But the Congressional vote that authorized eavesdropping without warrants on international communications, including those involving Americans within the United States, has shown that there is at least one arena in which Mr. Bush can still hold the line: terrorism. (See, 'Democrats, Republican accusations of being weak on ....')"

Rutenberg passed on Democratic complaints.

"In interviews, Democratic leaders and their aides acknowledged being outmaneuvered by the White House, which they accused of negotiating in bad faith, and portrayed the bill as a runaway train. Both sides agree that after a series of briefings by Michael McConnell, director of national intelligence, on potential threats to the nation and what he saw as crucial gaps in the surveillance law, they agreed to work together on a new set of provisions before the August recess.

"Yet the bill that passed the Senate on Friday and the House on Saturday attracted mostly Republican support. In all, only 41 House Democrats voted for it and its inclusion of new powers to force the cooperation of telecommunications firms and to tap into e-mail correspondence and telephone conversations without court approval; 181 House Democrats voted against it."

So?

"And Democratic memories are still fresh with attacks Mr. Bush used in 2004 against Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, a presidential rival he portrayed as 'weak on terror.' That Mr. Bush would succeed this month -- and on a program as controversial as the eavesdropping by the National Security Agency -- was somewhat surprising, given that the White House has seen its credibility on war and terrorism perceptibly erode this year."

But is the NSA wiretapping really so controversial? Most polling suggests it's actually pretty popular with the public.

In Tuesday's lead editorial, "The Fear of Fear Itself," the Times frothed:

"But mostly, the spectacle left us wondering what the Democrats -- especially their feckless Senate leaders -- plan to do with their majority in Congress if they are too scared of Republican campaign ads to use it to protect the Constitution and restrain an out-of-control president."

From what I understand, the

From what I understand, the NYT has something to worry about, I believe they are under investigation for publishing the leak as well as the leaker.  Big trouble is coming for them and this law passing only adds fuel to the fire that the country is in no mood to tolerate anymore leaks or the NYT publishing them.  The day can't come soon enough that the NYT is held accountable for compromising the security of the US for a ratings ploy to sell papers.

IT'S ABOUT TIME

A PROUD AMERICAN

It's about time the NYT (Anti America Rag) got their asses nailed to the wall.  I do hope the DOJ follows through statitng with Pinch on down and any other organization that gives our enemys secrets,  those secrets cost our lives and the lives of out military.  These media say our military fight for thier right to print  under the first ammendment, WRONG it does not give them the right to treason!!!!!!!

sneaky repubs!

"In interviews, Democratic leaders and their aides acknowledged being outmaneuvered by the White House, . . ."

So, how exactly were they 'outmaneuvered' by the White House?

Did Cheney sneak up behind some of the Democrats and push the 'Aye' button while they weren't looking?

Or was it that Congress uses Diebold voting machines.

D

I don't support our liberals or their mission.

Dang, why didn't we stoop

Dang, why didn't we stoop to that?  Oh, that's right, Dems don't worry about what's right or wrong, just what is expedient.

Such anger! Such

Such anger! Such disappointment! I've never read such froth!

ah yes, the spineless, phony

ah yes, the spineless, phony dems have proven themselves worthy of those two words again. Sqwawking about those "illegal" wiretaps, then voting in those same wiretaps. Idiots. It is to the point of being laughable, if they were not controlling our trillions...oooh, that's disturbing.

The Dems have been out of

The Dems have been out of power so long that they have forgotten what it means to lead.  They think hurling accusations is leadership, no that's called criticism which any back seat driver can do. Maybe Robert Byrd (has past experience) needs to assume control of the Senate because obviously Reid is clueless.  Maybe Gephardt can step in on the House side because Pelosi is totally incompetent.  At least with these two guys, there could be some compromise and actual work of the Congress can get done to reign in control instead of allowing fishing expeditions of the loons looking for any piece of red meat they can find.  Waxman and the rest of the loons are dragging down the Dem party with their petty vindictiveness.  Clearly neither Pelosi or Reid can control the rabble.

With such low approval ratings for Congress, the Dems are now in the most awkward of position being viewed as completely useless.  There are 13 appropriation bills in need of passage before October 1, tick, tick, tick...  If there is a slice of pork in them, Bush needs to veto them until Congress does the job correctly.  It's pretty bad when someone has to look over your shoulder for you to do your JOB.

Politics Thy Name Is Whore

Once again, the Liberals blame someone/something else.

Still, blaming Bush is better than the truth.  The Democrats wanted to go on vacation every bit as much as the Iraqi Parliment, but, due to Constitutional powers granted to the President, Congress was forced to stay until the job was done of which they made short shrift of it all - like they could have done all along.

Thanks for playing politics with America's safety again Democrats.

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

The difference between GW

The difference between GW and the demoCracks (and RINOs) is that, GW is running the country by principles and protects America not accoring to polls, while the domoCracks runs in the opposite direction as the "Cut & run", "surrender", "the war is already lost", losers in Capitol. They have a big mouth- and that's all they are, a nuance. They are an opposition to anything good for America. They oppose anything GW does. So then folks, how could you trust to vote for these losers?

If you ask these maggots, what individual liberties have they surrendered and have been violated since this bill was inacted few years back? For me and my family, none, nada, zero, zip, wala...We sleep tight knowing that GW has prevented another attack (God forbid) in our soil...Amen!

Bush outmaneuvers the Dems Again ? WHen will it stop....

Bush is so Dumb....but he's like the "Bunny" he just keeps keeps on keeping on...whipping the "Mandated Majority"....and if we had a Conservative MSM outlet...it would read..

Bush's Approval rating is in double Digits over the Congress's Approval Rating.

Maybe the Dems' are Dum and Dummer than Bush ?
