Jack Black Leads a Prayer to the Devil at the 2009 MTV Awards

  • Bookmark and Share

Jack Black The MTV Awards once again earned its reputation for tawdry entertainment by broadcasting Jack Black praying to the devil. The comedian, who was hawking a heavy metal video game called Brütal Legend, asked the "Dear Dark Lord Satan" to bless the rock star nominees with "continued success in the music industry."

Black appeared sporting a mullet, wearing a muscle suit, and carrying a larger-than-life battleaxe. While the Satan worshiping was obviously a gag, Black has previously made a point of offending Christians - going so far as to appear as Jesus in a video protesting Proposition 8, the California constitutional amendment that defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

Oh, well. Since I doubt

Oh, well. Since I doubt there are too many conservative Christian fans of the MTV awards, I guess Black figured playing this gag would be a safe bet - not that there seems to be any penalty in Hollywood for doing it anyway.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

I'm glad

he thinks it's funny.    Fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Black

Nothing new here, the man is a vulgar bafoon.

Is Black on steroids? His arms are huge.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

What does this have to do

What does this have to do with "Exposing & Combating Liberal Media Bias".

A man wearing a muscle suit, mullet, and oversized battleaxe should never be taken seriously, especially if he is a comedian.

Is this about him protesting Prop. 8 a few months ago?

Plenty, actually.

MTV is owned by Viacom, a corporate entity that owns everything from Paramount to Nick Jr. to Logo.  Viacom is home to all sorts of entertainment choices, from innocuous to salacious, but one thing they can be said to embrace is liberal media choices.

Do you think Sumner Redstone, Viacom's chairman, would've heard about it had Jack Black prayed to God rather than Satan, even in jest?  Do you think People for the American Way, the ACLU, and their kin would have picket lines at Viacom headquarters?

The airing of that nonsense was a quintessential example of liberal media bias.  Now it's documented here.  If you have a problem with that, there's the proverbial door.

Nice shooting, Mike.

LOL-Tight grouping, too.

:-)

-Dave

I agree with Rush. It's time for Obama to resign.

Much obliged.

My groupings with other forms of ammunition aren't anything to sneeze at, either...

How many of the artists thanked God when they won an award? Do you think Summer Redstone got letters about that? No they wouldn't because it was a comedy skit, not an actual prayor to the dark lord satan.

This has nothing to do with liberal media bias. This has everything to do with Jack Black being opposed to prop 8.

→ Thank you enak!

This has everything to do with Jack Black being opposed to prop 8.

Now you're claiming that homosexuals are Satan worshippers?

That's the first I've heard of this connection between these groups.

Could you provide a link proving homosexuals are Satanists?

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

A few things, 24.

1) It's "Sumner," not "Summer."  Though perhaps he has a daughter or granddaughter with that name, as it would be cute.

2) Thanking God isn't the same as leading a prayer to Him, so your analogy is dead on arrival.

3) Can you define for us the difference between a "pretend prayer" and a real one?

It was a skit. It was in

It was a skit. It was in jest. It had nothing to do with media bias. It wasn't a real prayer because he was playing a character promoting his video game. It was joke.

You're empty-handed, I see.

"I was just kidding" isn't a get-out-of-responsibility-free card.

Ever.

Out of the closet!

So now they are praying to Obama out in the open:  "Dear Dark Lord Satan."  LOL.  Just kidding...  He does appear human, while Satan is a fallen angel.  He is not THAT good!   Pretty good however!

Looks like he's finally

Looks like he's finally realized he's just another flash in the pan.  Better say something controversial to keep himself on someone's radar.

Jack Black =

Ass clown. He's only hurting himself with this sort of garbage, IMO.

Who cares? He's a comedian.

Who cares? He's a comedian. I'm not particular religious, but I'm not heathen, although I listen to death metal.

Wow. It seems Newsbusters

Wow. It seems Newsbusters needs to "vet" their stories a little better before giving them the green light.

Black sure looks alot like Glenn Danzig...

Ms. Plocher, stick to liberal media bias. You are apparently ill-equipped to handle pop culture references and obvious comedic content.

I fully expect to see a scathing expose' on this eveeeeel song next.

The Devil's Music

Glenn Danzig?  Not sure about that but it would be appropriate now that you mention it...what with albums like Lucifuge and thrall-demonsweatlive out there.

So many people still cling to this notion that heavy metal is the Devil's Music, when even Anthrax pointed out they think he is more into "new wave".

Now, if you will excuse me, I need to break out my Deicide and Slayer collections, and follow that up with a bit of Venom.

FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK...

Hard rock & heavy metal have always played to the darker side of the imagination, whether based on reality, fantasy, or is based on a book or movie. From the begining with Black Sabbath, & including Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer & beyond, have all explored the darker side of things. I find that the notion that they ever into worshiping Satan was more about exploiting the idiocy of those who claimed they were in Satan. Just slick marketing in my opinion, as AC/DC & Maiden have proved over the years.

BTW unsane, I think you need to find a way into the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. One of the biggest metal fest in the world, sounds like it might be in your wheelhouse.

I think music transcends

Most politics, if the artist doesn't make it political or controversial. Quite honestly though, if it aint the Blues or some Jazz or how I assume my woman are, it dont matter anyway? Or we could bring on the young folks,,,,,,, Please!!

Metal

From the begining with Black Sabbath, & including Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer & beyond, have all explored the darker side of things.  Absolutely.  For some reason the heavy metal sound lends itself to this.  Not that I object in the least.

Just slick marketing in my opinion, as AC/DC & Maiden have proved over the years.  I think it was Jerry Garcia who said, many years ago, something about the music teenagers listen to "should be as offensive as possible to their parents".  And that is a large part of it.  The music on Slayer's Hell Awaits is great, but the entire album is about death and Satan, and even features a romantic love ballad (h/t to Jeff Hanneman) about the joys of sex with a corpse.  Hell Awaits has TONS of musically technical elements to it, but I happen to think that "Kill Again" provides great stress release.

BTW unsane, I think you need to find a way into the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. One of the biggest metal fest in the world, sounds like it might be in your wheelhouse.  You have NO IDEA how badly I want to visit one of those European metal festivals.  If not there, then someplace else in Europe.  That is where it is at for metal these days.  Oh, and I am eagerly looking forward to the release of Slayer's World Painted Blood.

Me, too, Un. I have been

Me, too, Un. I have been following this rock festival the past few years. Where else could we see Motorhead, The Outlaws, Uriah Heep, Amon Amarth, Europe, Candlemass, and ZZ Top play together? Wow!

SCREAM FOR ME...

I think Wacken is the biggest on the European mainland, I believe the Download Festival at Donnington Park (motor race course) in the UK might be bigger...

http://www.downloadfestival.co.uk/lineup/index.aspx

...the other gigantic festival is Rock in Rio, but that seems to be softening things up with major pop acts, which would be sad.

I would love to hit one of these metal-fests as well, Wacken or Dowload would be my preferences. 3 days of ear splitting metal & rock. The whole scene would be great to take in, but there is a downside. You do end up sitting through more then a few bands you can't stand to get to what you want. I really don't want to see Mayhem or Canabal Corpse in order to get to Iron Maiden, Nightwish, Doro, or other acts that I have seen online from Wacken that I would be interested in. Google or U-Tube video search Wacken live videos & just check it out. There are other European metal fests as well posted, I would love to go to one of them.

I hear ya.

Corpsepaint does not react well with summer outdoor shows in the daytime :)

Download at Donnington

Ahhhh, Download.  Dream Theater has played it.  So has Meshuggah.  So have many many others...

Guess you missed it, Roger.

I could've saved your waste of bandwidth had you merely read what I wrote earlier.  Quoting myself thusly, and like so:

And Black is dressed that way to promote a new video game, Brütal Legend.  No doubt it'll be rated E for Everyone... Sure it will...

It's a spoof. A gag. It's

It's a spoof. A gag. It's not serious. This is a stupid article.

The best comedy...

...is grounded in reality.

So was it bad comedy, or a good spoof?

--Mike

Does it matter? All we know

Does it matter? All we know is it is not liberal media bias. That was enough for many people on this thread to agree.

Nice fallacy there, Roger.

So if enough people agree that 2 + 2 = 5, we can go with that from now on?

Phew...

--Mike

www.thebrattonreport.com

I would think it means that

I would think it means that enough people here know that you cannot p*ss down their collective leg and tell them it's raining, genius. Being a kneejerk conservative is no better than being a kneejerk liberal. You are still a douche, either way.

You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting. You may go now.

You're nothing if not consistent, Roger.

You toss out one logical fallacy, then another--first an ad populum, then an ad hominem.

Next time, please don't come to the potluck supper without a covered dish, all right?  Thanks in advance.

--Mike

It was a bit of silliness

It was a bit of silliness from Jack Black. Again, who cares.

And speaking of logical fallacies...

...we see an example of the ad balboam: If it doesn't interest "balboa," no one else should care about it, either.

--Mike

Great point. Repeating

Great point. Repeating yourself obviously make it true!

Yaaaaaaaaawn.

Sorry, Roger. Was just trying to keep you...

...from getting a callous due to scrolling back up.

And you might want to work on that narcolepsy.

So?

Really why do we care?

He can do what he pleases. Do we not protest health care? Hell yeah we do. With fire in our guts. It's every man's right to protest and offend. We make claims of thicker skin yet our cast iron guts explode when touched.

Not Funny! Pop Culture Paganism is a concern

I've linked to your post from  http://www.jeremiahfilms.com/released/CreepingPaganism/909140547 "Creeping Paganism" ... Christians may not be watching MTV but the effect does not end in the livingrooms of the people who do!

Jeremiah Films has a new production coming out  http://www.jeremiahfilms.com/products/PCP "Pop Culture Paganism" ... looking at the subject. Entertainment is evolving and so is the society we
live in. Our taste in movies and TV shows reflects our current state of
mind
on a global scale.

The 21st century is undoubtedly marked by such
blockbuster hits as Harry Potter, and now the Twilight phenomenon, not
to mention HBO's wildly popular vampire series True Blood as well as
the upcoming teen series Vampire Diaries. What are the ties, if any
between our current infatuation with these otherworldly beings and the
ancient beliefs of Paganism?

The film features interviews with occultic experts,
as well as high-ranking witches, druids and an interview with a former
vampire. With exclusive footage of real-life ceremonies from the heart
of England, featuring druidic ceremonies from stonehenge and many witch
covens, this film gives any viewer a comprehensive understanding of the
roots and dangers of this newly branded strain of paganism:
Neovampirism.

Really? I Just Watch "True Blood" For The Sex And Nudity...

Well, at least the clips that show sex and nudity online. (I'm too cheap to pay for HBO, if not basic cable.)

As a secular Jew, I could care less. This is only news to these people who still believe that Christianity is the one true religion. Not. I'll stick to my religion and you stick to yours. No need to get rid of them (well maybe Islam, but that's another story.)

It's a parody. He prays

It's a parody.

He prays to the devil because that's a heavy metal cliche.  He wears a muscle suit for the same reason.

It's a joke.

And before you worry too much about the effect of pagan beliefs on popular culture, go look up Easter!  Pagan beliefs have been a part of our culture for hundreds of years.  They have been assimilated, and so they pop up in strange places.  Girls have giggled about sexy vampires since Bram Stoker, this is nothing new.  It just happens to be more popular now than it was thirty years ago, so anyone over forty thinks it's a catastrophe!

But Devil worship is real.

I don't mean to thump anybody here with my language.

The two dead bodies splayed across the backyards of two units in an upmarket estate in Bloubosrand are also real. Although the "devil worshipper" did not know how to worship the devil very well ... http://jozijourno.blogspot.com/2009/09/dawn-deaths-and-devil-worship.htm... ... it seems the kid had just been dabbling in the occult and got his
satanism backwards, picked up junk off the internet and mixed it up
with pagan practices. Used the wrong color candles.

Per the Papers at the link: "no altar to speak of, and the blood smears on the walls that are
generally evident when one makes pacts with the devil were sadly lacking"

The growth of paganism is real ... http://www.jeremiahfilms.com/released/CreepingPaganism/908111600

And the fact that it is a sin is real.

Labeling it merely funny and harmless does make it so. Would it be funny if he pertended to be a child pretitor? Would it be harmless entertainment for children? Yes we are desensitied to the occult - does being desensitised change it from a sin to something funny.

We sensationalize any

We sensationalize any crimes that are associated with the occult specifically because we are so fascinated and scandalized by it.  Society loves its own taboos.  But they are a tiny tiny fraction of the crime and misery that exists in the world.

If you want to make a difference, stop worrying about paganism and put your efforts to solving some other social ill.
