Covering for Obama Media Play Vietnam Defeat Song in Afghanistan

Three weeks after their gushing praise of President Obama's meeting with Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the media have taken a cue from the lack of action that followed.

It was a good run while it lasted.

Word from the conflict became more dire almost by the day as Obama's cabinet squabbled. The American media, having sensed Afghanistan could be lost without action, chose to cover for their favorite president and begin the process of mentally preparing the public for defeat.

The Washington Post published a perfect example of the new meme in Howard Kurtz's column on October 23. Kurtz attacked Republicans as "armchair quarterbacks" for their criticism of Obama's stalling and said it was "rich" of Dick Cheney to demand a new plan. As for what that plan might be, Kurtz's Vietnam defeat song sounded all too familiar:

The Obama administration has a clear conundrum on Afghanistan. There are no good options. Sending more troops might not work. Not sending more troops might not work...As for domestic politics, the president is likely to get more support for an aggressive military strategy from Republicans than from his own party.

Reuters reported on October 22 that Vice President Joe Biden was among the loudest voices against a surge and was involved in meetings about what to do next.

Reuters was eager to spin it as Biden playing "devil's advocate" and assured readers it was not due to anyone "bowing to public opinion" on the war. Just in case readers began to worry that internal debating was the cause of delay, Reuters made sure to portray the White House as unified:

Obama is debating a wide range of views and is not simply going to rubber-stamp the military's troop request...The White House has dismissed criticism of the president, arguing that such a momentous decision requires careful consideration. It has also praised Biden's role.

"There are very few people in this town who have the type of experience and expertise that the vice president brings to this. The president greatly values that experience," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

What a difference a few weeks made. Back on October 2, when the public was interested in McChrystal's reports, Reuters lauded his meeting with Obama as "helpful" and described McChrystal as the "focus" of Obama's future plans.

A mere 20 days later, the military was not to expect a "rubber stamp" of support.

The same day that Reuters published its change of heart, the Christian Science Monitor went into overdrive:

Recent polls show that a majority of Americans believe the war in Afghanistan is not worth fighting. This is said to weigh heavily on President Obama as he considers Gen. Stanley McChrystal's request to focus on counterinsurgency and add 40,000 troops to the field...Obama's consideration of public opinion shows that the administration recognizes that the public might not support even a successful long-term effort, and this lack of support might doom an otherwise effective mission.

Of course it never occurred to the Monitor that public declarations of the war being unwinnable and a sitting Vice President openly opposed to military requests could have played a role in shifting public opinion.

The Monitor continued:

It is also possible that the public is able to comprehend and measure the goals, but disagrees with the president that they are achievable or worthy enough. Or it may simply be that Americans are worn out - tired of sending soldiers to fight and tired of spending billions in faraway lands to liberate people who do not want us there entirely.

The Monitor could have saved time and money by simply reprinting a news report from circa 1970 and leaving out the word Vietnam. No one would have been the wiser.

Not to be outdone, CBS News published its own lament on October 19, calling the war another phase of "American jihad" that has lasted since 1979. The piece warned that America found herself in an "eternal fight" unless Obama took a lesson from history and found a way to end it.

The worst article of all, however, appeared in the Baltimore Sun on October 23. A vicious opinion column penned by Joseph Galloway mocked Obama as a "no we can't" president while seething with rage over how "Blue Dog Democrats negotiated with Just Plain Dog Republicans" on a variety of issues.

On the subject of Afghanistan, a bitter tone of sarcasm dripped off the page:

When he got into office, the new president promptly threw in another 20,000 American troops the commanders said were urgently needed in Afghanistan. Now they're back lobbying for another down payment of 45,000, or is it 60,000? Do I hear 80,000? Will they be back next spring pleading for another 50,000 or 100,000?
Obama and his national security advisers are rethinking the whole Afghan thing, they say. Given their track record to date, can there be any doubt they'll solomonically decide to cut the baby in half and call it a compromise?

We'll end up neither in nor out, with no hope of victory, even if some of the wise men could define what victory in Afghanistan might look like. Someone in the White House will go on the Sunday talk shows and define it as a compromise.

Readers who were able to get past the disturbing "joke" about cutting a baby in half were left with an obvious conclusion: defeat in Afghanistan was inevitable.

On every point where President Obama has failed, from government mandated healthcare to getting the Olympics, the mainstream media have been there to mitigate the damage.

Should America end up losing Afghanistan, the groundwork has already been laid to prepare voters to expect it and offer justification why loss was not so bad.

Once again, for America's so-called journalists when it comes to war the song remains the same.

Has Ear Leader ever had to

Has Ear Leader ever had to make a substantive decision in his life?  Throughout his legislative carreer, when it came to any controversial issue, he voted "present".  Now that he is head honcho, and the decision is on his shoulders, he tries again to vote "present", but it isn't working.

Now, isn't this the same press that when the U.S. and allies invaded Iraq they were screaming "Vietnam"?  Weren't there words like "quagmire" being bandied about?  Did not this same press declare that the war in Iraq was lost, that a civil war had erupted, that the surge wouldn't work, and so forth?  So, if Obamassiah dithers long enough, and the position in Afghanistan becomes untenable so we (NATO) has to pull out of there, will this press blame Black Jesus for the debacle, or will they blame Bush? (The last question was rhetorical.)

"A communist is someone who reads Marx.  An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx."  Ronald Reagan

incompetent? Nope! Indecisive? Not really!

There's making a decision to do something, and then there's making a decision to do nothing.  The latter is what's happening here, it's nothing to do with incompetency which by definition means unable to do the task at hand versus dereliction of duty which is not doing the job at hand thus causing harm.

Everything he's done is a dereliction of duty, and in fact, it's treasonous.  He's lied deliberately to the Americans, he's taken actions that were illegal(car companies, banks, etc), he's endangered our country in various ways(not sending soldiers over, closed gitmo, sided with enemies rather than allies), his fed reserve chairman used actions to weaken our already weakened currency which will destroy our economy and worst of all, he has not proven his place of birth which means everything he's done is against the Constitution anyway.  There are other things, but those are the most damning.

Why, America?  Why aren't we doing anything about this?  Congress isn't doing anything.  It's left to us, but we as a whole don't seem to care, why is this allowed to happen?

The Dems

Are looking for an oppurtunity to cut and run, like they always do. As a Viet Vet I bore the brunt and lived through the perfidy of cowardly dems blaming the war on its soldiers rather on where the blame squarely belonged on the inability of Democrats to fight a war, any war, for any length of time without running away. I am always surprised we got throught WWII. The slaughter of the innocents will begin as soon as you hear that sucking sound, the vacuum caused when we run away again. Why any country would want to be allied with us is a mystery other than the obvious greed of some to take our money as we now will leave them in the lurch as a matter of policy.

Stop Dithering!

I've been saying for weeks that baby Bamster is doing the only thing he knows how....phone in a "present" vote on Afghanistan.

The reason he's dithering so is that there is no good out for him.  And clearly, the Blame Bush strategy isn't working, either.  Thank you Darth Cheney (brilliant to use Obama's own words doing so)!

I am afraid you are correct, defeat is inevitable with Bamster at the helm.   This, unfortunately was the one area in which I wanted him to succeed.   If he's going to go with half measures or no measures, it's time to fold, now.  But he'll continue to try to play politics with it.   Disgusting coward.

I hope he fails, too.

Hummm.........

"It has also praised Biden's role."

How interesting, considering we hear for the last 6 years that it was terrible for Bush to let his VP make war decisions.  What did the liberals call Iraq and Afghanistan?  Oh, that's right, Cheney's wars!  What did they call Cheney's involvement in Bush's war policies?  Oh, that's right UNCONSTITUTIONAL!

Hay, liberals, are you now going to post demeaning remarks about Biden's Unconstitutional Wars or are you going to all be hypocrites and say nothing bad about "your guy?" and the "unconstitutional war powers" granted to 'your" VP, like yo claimed Cheney possessed?

Somehow, I don't think you'll even mention Biden's name at all when discussing Afghanistan.

I knew Afghanistan was lost as soon as Obama won the election

And I still think he will figure out a way to FUBAR things in Iraq, too.

Nice going, America!

Our elected representatives have failed us.

Vietnam

I fully expect Obama to turn tail and run away from Afghanistan as was done in Vietnam. When that happens, Afghanistan will become Obama's "Vietnam". Lack of political will destroyed the success acheived then and will do so again.

 Add the requested troops!

"JUST DO IT!"

             Th

The so-called media is turning their backs on America with their lies, just like they did in Germany. This is treasonous actions against the citizens of our republic. If not for Fox, would we know about Acorn's corruption? No. Would we know about Van Jones being a comunist? No. Would we know about Dunn admiring Mao? No. They can take their hatred for Americans on down the road, we aren't buying their snake oil!

Obama vs Biden on Military Strategy

I am convinced that President Obama and Vice President Biden have two different, conflicting strategies on international relations.  President Obama cancelled missile defense for Poland, which was very unpopular among the Polish people, regardless of how the MSM played it.

Vice President Biden then mollified the Eastern European countries by proposing a new missile defense for Poland and their neighbors.  Obama's strategy was to deploy missiles in Turkey instead of the EU!

Democrats and WAR?

WW1 = DEMOCRAT was president

WW2 = DEMOCRAT was president

Korea = DEMOCRAT was president

Vietnam = DEMOCRAT was president

Now = DEMOCRAT is president

DEAL WITH IT!

Democrats and War

Hawk:

Good thing your title was'nt "Warring Democrats".

WWI - Wilson, no military experience.

WWII - FDR, no military experience.  Always wondered if he would have joined but for his infirmity. See below.

Korea - Truman, Artillery Captain - WWI, in combat in France.

Viet Nam - JFK, (sent military advisors/1962), WWII PT boat Commander, in combat in Pacific.

Viet Nam - LBJ, WWII Naval Officer.  Was not in combat, but on a flight in a forward zone in the Pacific, the military passenger aircraft developed a problem and made an emergency landing at a forward base.  Johnson finagled himself a Silver Star out of that.  Always a politician; looking ahead, I suppose.  I suspect Franklin Roosevelt might, I say might, have acted with a similar purpose in mind.    Worked for John Kerry in Nam.   At least he was in the immediate area and carried a weapon.  The way it managed to be filmed makes me suspect (theres' that word again) that it was a probable set-up.

Afghanistan - the British got their asses kicked, the Russkis too, and we have Obama?

No military experience, no work experience, no business running experience, no legislative experience---

If, however, we have need of someone who can talktalktalktalktalk, someone who can just organize the hell out of them there communities, or campaign-campaign-campaign--

Wait,  CAMPAIGN!!

Thats what those military dudes do, they campaign.

Maybe LOTUS could,    maybe theres' a glimmer of

Nah.  Never mind.

A view from within

How these people spread their poison is pathetic. There is presently
no threat of defeat on the battlefield, the need for more troops is so
we can get "The good War" over with, end it, victory is obtainable.

I'm
not sure whats true anymore. My good friend of 30 years was in Iraq and
now has been in Afghanistan sine April supporting the Marines in surveillance. This is what he told me in the last conversation we had a week ago, this what I sent a week ago to update his friends:

"Camp Leatherneck has doubled in Marines since he got there, says now their
packed in big time and still mostly tents. They have A/C and the temp
lately is changing, was 125 in the day, now around 90 in the day and
freeze your ass off at night. All kinds of equipment and buildings
going up on the base, won't be tent city for long. Lots of Marines keep
arriving every day and its going to be a substantial base when its
done, new runways going in. Chow hall is always full of really good
food 24 hrs a day. Beyond that only one Pizza hut over on the Dutch
base...says what's it doing there not sure? lol.

Says the Marines spirits are very high, morale is good, no one complains...its a silent rule, no one wants to hear it....whatever it is.....get over it. Apparently
to his surprise what's causing quite a ruckus is many around him are
not at all happy with the talk of open Gays allowed in Marines. But
they are really happy their on a rotation of 7 month tour and then 14
at home....or something very close to that.

He goes off base a lot to remote locations, says Talibannever come out in direct conflict, have to hunt them down, they only ambush and plant IED's
on roads. Jokingly he said the Marines hang their asses out and moon
them to try and get Taliban to come out and fight. Says the Taliban
does not have any new momentum, its not happening, not seen in any way,
and nothing he is seeing or hearing that this war is injeopardy by any
means. Taliban sometimes find a way to surprise us and cause us
casualties,  but its clearly the Taliban that's taking very high
casualties, and their not very well supplied of any substantial weapons
above a machine gun, mortar and IED etc.

Afghanistan National Army is very weak, but we are building them slowly and their very loyal. We have armored vehicles,
they're following and riding in Ford pick up trucks with a machine gun
on the back... and that's going to take time and money to change. We
give them small weapons and body armor
etc. Says the Afghan soldiers are respected by our Marines, they show
extraordinary bravery in battle that is not recognized. They're really
great to to deal with, show our soldiers great respect, and when on
base always volunteer to run around taking care of our soldiers needs
like getting mail and cigarettes etc.

Marijuana and Poppy
fields are huge and everywhere, no one cares, they go on farming and we
go on fighting and ignoring it. Problem is one minute the farmers are
in the field with a shovel, the next their Taliban shooting at them.
Says it always ends up they should have stuck with farming.

He goes out on the road to a lot of remote bases, says the people and
children along the way come out in the villages and run along side and
waving and give victory signs and thumbs up."

And here I thought Candance was kinda squishy.

I would pound on trolls a little too hard and Candance would say I was being too mean.

Ah-hah. Turns out she is Rambo without all the muscles. Who knew.

If these people think they can sell the idea of Cut'n'Run and call it something like Vietnam. They are sadly mistaken. Vietnam was a war of choice. We fought. We died. We won. There were 2 countries before we came in. There were 2 countries when we left. We won. We had a peace treaty. And we had an agreement with the Southern country that we would support them just like we did in South Korea. The Democrats at that time made us turn our collective back on a fragile allie.

It is not the same in Afghanistan. We were attacked by them. This is not about helping out someone in a fight with someone else. This is our fight. All of ours. We will not leave. Not on my watch.

And if I am overruled. And we do leave. Well, by gawd, we better just nuke the next fellow that tries something because I never want to go through this again.

No. We will not leave. Not gonna happen. We talk a lot about the MSM being wrong here. Well, this one, most definitely wrong again.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

What will

we use for nukes, JWF?  The 0 is going to try his hardest to make sure we don't have any to use.

Totally right about Viet Nam, we left a government in place, the dems turned their backs on them, cut off all military aid, and then waved the "peace in our time" paper over their heads.  They're responsible for the re-education camps, the boat people and those who died in both of those settings.  They own what happened in SE Asia after that.

Re VP Cheney

I find it funny that every few weeks the Bamster or his minions attack Vice-President Cheney, and invariably the Bamster ends up with his boxers up around his shoulder blades and his lunch money gone, yet he never learns. Whether it's Afghanistan, or Iraq, or Iran, or missiles in Poland, he keeps stumbling and in desperation he lashes out for someone to blame.

And this guy that we were warned was on his deathbed in 2000 and 2004 is the Bamster's most vigorous critic years many later.

Liz as well. She has done

Liz as well.

She has done a great job with her criticism...which she does with honesty and class.

The left in this country from the top head on down are despicable with what they have done regarding the WOT...it's been a disgrace...unfortunately it will continue to be so.

Chickesh!t blame games are all they know how to do when it comes to ensuring defeat.

'Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea'~Breitbart

That's just typical ...

That's just typical of liberals like Kurtz. They own both houses of Congress now just like during Vietnam (the whole Vietnam War) and they were crying defeat now just as they did then.

These losers need to do just that, lose in 2010. "We the People" need to do everything in our power to vote them out of office and replace them with people who will do "the will of the people" and if they don't they will find themselves our of office also.

"We the People" need to take back our government.

Remember folks, Freedom isn't Free. It was bought with the blood and sacrifice of the men and women who are serving and who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

For those who fought for it, Freedom has a flavor that the protected will never know.

Also remember folks, that the way to SUPPORT THE TROOPS is to support their mission. Anyone who says that they support the troops but don't support their mission is lying about supporting the troops. And if you want to know, yes I do have a dog in the fight, he is a United States Marine.
