Bozell Column: NBC Revives Howard Stern

By Brent Bozell | May 19, 2012 | 08:17

Brent Bozell's picture

Howard Stern has not been missed since he took his smutty schtick off the airwaves and onto unregulated Sirius satellite radio. His superfans – the brainiacs still playing their VHS tapes of a Stern show called “Butt Bongo Fiesta” – have made the satellite radio chiefs happy, but Stern has almost vanished as an “icon” of pop culture. He even scaled back his radio schedule to three days a week, semi-retiring.

So why in blazes would NBC make the decision to revive his career by bringing him on as a judge of their summer talent show “America’s Got Talent,” a family show watched by millions of children? They knew exactly what they were buying. They just never stop believing that shock will sell.

NBC isn’t exactly “Must-See TV” any more. AP television writer David Bauder noted last month that ten years ago, NBC was scoring 28 million viewers for “ER” and 22 million for “Friends” on Thursdays in April. Now, their Thursday lineup has trouble cracking the three million mark.

The Parents Television Council sent a warning shot across the bow to advertisers that this family show would probably see a major increase in explicit content. Stern and his fans thought it was absurd to pre-judge his performance before it aired – as if Stern wouldn’t be utterly predictable keeping in line with his career.

Take, for example, the recent “Time 100" article he wrote honoring NBC morning host Matt Lauer. He said he and his wife would like a “threesome” with Mrs. Lauer, and then added “Hey, I'm Howard Stern, and I need to throw something inappropriate into everything I do.” But somehow we shouldn’t pre-judge Stern.

This new NBC gig allowed the “critics” to bow slavishly toward all the “accomplishments” of the self-anointed “King of All Media.” Bill Carter of the New York Times began a splashy Sunday profile by noting how “radio notoriety” pays. “If anyone has a right to feel on top of the world, it’s Howard Stern — especially inside his elegant, cumulus-high apartment on the West Side of Manhattan....This is the aerie of a hugely successful man, which certainly describes Stern.”

Washington Post TV critic Hank Stuever found only triumph in Stern’s late career. “He’s richer than he ever dreamed of. And although he still likes to think of himself as a marginalized provocateur, the fact is that the Howard Stern of the 1980s and ’90s has been fully validated. He poked and prodded America into frank conversations about gender, sex, bodily functions, politics, culture, art. He triumphed over his real and imagined oppressors.” How go your frank conversations about bodily functions?

Oily Stern superfans made fools of themselves on television. On CNN, former “Mork and Mindy” sidekick Jay Thomas mocked the PTC and honored Stern as the sage of our age.

“He is the richest and smartest entertainer of our time. He knows exactly what he's doing, he certainly is not going to do anything – like me here on national television, he's not going to do anything untoward,” Thomas insisted. “And I think that NBC should send a million dollar contribution to the Parents Council. They have added millions of people to watching ‘America's Got Talent.’”

Wrong, and wrong. In his first show, Stern had to talk about the size of his sex organ to a male dancer: “I was rooting for you, but all I saw was a guy with a small package. Don't worry, I'm in the same boat! But as a stripper, you can't have man boobs.” Stern also mocked a bad singer who when he said his parents had died, Stern asked if they “died of embarrassment.”

What matters to the cultural nihilists is one thing only (they say): Ratings. So guess what? After all the hype, it didn’t work – again. “America’s Got Talent” scored a 3.6 average rating in the key 18-49 demographic, down significantly from last year’s 4.3 for the season premiere.

The promoters of sleaze and sensationalism can’t stand criticism, so their first line of defense is to insist that any criticism from “moralists” is only going to boost viewership. If moralists believed that, they would never speak up against anything. So far, the Stern gambit looks like NBC’s “biggest loser.” And that says something.

Stern has been a good judge so far and he has been well behaved.

People like your company have been trying to scare off his advertisers for years. Thank God he has prevailed again and again.

Submitted by libBuster on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 11:55am.

As a societal threat, I am far more concerned about the left wing propaganda put out by NBC, CNN, CBS, ABC, The New York Times and the Washington Post. Stern has been somewhat apolitical. When he did endorse candidates they were mostly Republican. Christie Todd Whitman and George Pataki come to mind.

He is smart enough to behave himself in prime time television. If you don't like his satellite show don't subscribe.

It is a compelete waste of energy and mission for MRC to bother with Stern.

Deal with it

Submitted by Unsane on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 11:35pm.

Unfortunately for you, shawn, if your hero Howard Stern has freedom of speech, so does Mr. Bozell. You just have to deal with it. You may love the idea of a selective application of freedom of speech where everything you like enjoys unlimited freedom of speech while their critics are forced to shut up, but that isn't freedom of speech.

I never once said that Mr. Bozell does not have the right to complain and I never once said he should shut up. Unlike the NB members that whined when Mr. Bozell criticized Christine O Donnell.

I respect Mr. Bozells freedom of speech very much, I am simply saying that there is much variety on tv, internet and DVD. Some of it is censored, some of it is not. Despite the fact Mr. Bozell is threatening advertisers, it brings me great comfort that the advertisers pretty much ignore him and free speech is very much alive.

...as it should. Both Mr. Bozell and Mr. Stern have freedom of speech, which is great.

But I'd be more worried about something else entirely. Maybe the advertisers don't care about Mr. Bozell, but they do care when Mr. Stern's ratings begin to plunge when the general viewing/listening public tire of the middle school locker room humor you so adore.

not much in this article but here

The Parents Television Council sent a warning shot across the bow to advertisers that this family show would probably see a major increase in explicit content. Stern and his fans thought it was absurd to pre-judge his performance before it aired – as if Stern wouldn’t be utterly predictable keeping in line with his career.

Part of letter  sent to all AGT advertisers is here,

"The risk of associating your hard-earned corporate brand image with such 'shock' is not worth the cost involved - a cost not just in terms of wasted media dollars, but also in terms of countless millions of dollars in customer goodwill," PTC president Tim Winter wrote in the letter.

"I assure you that every advertiser on 'America's Got Talent' will be held publicly accountable for underwriting any of the inevitably vile antics of Howard Stern," Winter added.

Stern has built a reputation over decades as a radio show host, currently airing on the Sirius XM satellite network, who often uses foul language and discusses sexual content. During his career, he has taken his show to TV, wrote a book and even produced a movie, "Private Parts," loosely based on his life.

He was hired by "America's Got Talent" creator Simon Cowell and is expected to drive millions of new viewers to the family-friendly show - the most popular summer TV program on U.S. television - when it returns to U.S. airwaves on May 1

With all due respect...

Submitted by Flying_Flynn on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 9:13am.

I have been visiting this web site for years, and have a ton of respect for Mr. Bozell. And although I do not agree with a lot of Howard's politics, two things are certain: my belief that he is one of the funniest entertainers ever, and my belief that he is one of the best interviewers ever.

I have been a Howard Stern fan ever since his days at WNBC and have appreciated not only his talents, but his First Amendment battles too. So my question to Mr. Bozell is this, even though you do not like his act, why make an issue over it? He has done more in the fight to protect the First Amendment than any of the on-air personalities on MSNBC, and has become the most successful radio personality ever. Leave Howard alone! If the majority of his fans are like me, they all have something better to do than watch AGT.

Submitted by Flying_Flynn on Sun, 05/20/2012 - 9:18am.

When the rating is done for Stern, do they monitor just the live feed and the west coast feed, or are they monitoring the replays as well? I consider myself to be a "normal" fan, if there is such a thing, and there are time when I may tune in later in the day just to see if something is playing that I may have missed. Also, there is no way on God's earth that Dr. Laura is beating Howard, but I can definitely see Limbaugh, Levin and Beck beating him.

Stern marketed himself very

Submitted by RR GOP on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 1:39pm.

Stern marketed himself very well, and I applaud his success in our free enterprise system. Back in the '90s I read his book, watched his movie and found them both amusing. Thought his radio show was boring. I'm shocked only by real things, like some of the stuff that comes out of Biden's mouth.

A few years from now when Howard's receiving 24 hour nursing care and getting his diapers changed regularly, he will certainly not be a burden on society due to his hard-earned wealth. I wonder if some new "shock jock" will make fun of that? If so, will Howard hear about it and while he's being made "as comfortable as possible" with a morphine IV drip going into his arm, will he smile at that?

Its a Family Show

Submitted by stunned on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 4:42pm.

The reason television ratings are down every year and the ratings of the "talent" shows are huge is that they are the only shows you can watch with the kiddies and grandma. There is a couple of generations who never watched network tv like we did growing up and have no allegence to tv. They turned to the internet and tv on demand BECAUSE their parents didn't allow them to watch. The networks killed the golden goose when they started putting "edgy" tv on at 8pm. The ratings will not be as big this season and they have no one to blame but themselves.

Stern is more Libertarian

Submitted by gopcongress on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 4:51pm.

I myself am no fan of Stern's overall comedic shows, and certainly his shtick cannot be exposed to children or 'tweens.' The fact he's on satellite is rather a misnomer, as more and more media are migrating to the FCC-free spectrum of cable, satellite, or non-broadcast wave technologies.

While the vast majority of his content is child content-abusive, he did have a few zingers. He did a Hannity-like "man on the street" interview with clueless Obama voters who were told what Obama was going to do. The caveat: they were told that Obama was going to prosecute the war in Iraq, and that Sarah Palin was the vice president. Listen to the video here:

Howard Stern - Talent?????

Submitted by richard on Sun, 05/20/2012 - 6:49am.

I guess it's just me, from reading all the attributes about Stern's talent, I just don't get it. What talent do you speak of? The constant foul mouth that Howard displays, now that takes real talent. I've heard better at the local tavern and have used such myself, after a few too many. I guess I've got talent too. Howard is also an ace at throwing baloney at the bare butts of many porn stars, and also turning the switch on to the highly prized "spanking machine." These two, in themselves, should get Howard the top ratings of talent perfection.
Let's see - he can't sing, he can't dance, he can't act, he's hooked nosed ugly, his hair looks like a brillo pad. He flunked out of college and has never done anything productive in life other than act like a supreme a**hole, but you fools choose to call him talented!
Oh, he's got certain talent alright - the ability to make something out of nothing. Sucking all the miscreants of this world into his web of usless babble and offensive actions is his biggest talent. No wonder this nation is so f'd up, with all the attention paid to creeps like him being the prime reason some of you exist in life. What a sad joke.

Free speech

Yes, the freedom to discuss bodily functions, ask women if they're real, and, oh I can't go into the petty juvenile nonsense Stern's follower's consider free speech. You want the freedom to talk about this stuff please don't act as if it's some noble cause. When my son moves out of my house and into his own he can swear all he wants all day long. What does it accomplish? What higher purpose does it serve?

It does not serve a higher purpose

He entertains people. He entertained me until he had enough of the FCC. My wife would not alllow us to get satellite radio so now the only time I can listen to him is when i am on vacation rent a car that comes with satellite radio

I like being entertained which is why I love Newsbusters. There are interesting posters here. So just like how I enjoy the fact KoSers hate NB and can't do anything about it, same goes for Bozell and the PTC for their futile efforts.

And what would that be?

Submitted by shawn. on Sun, 05/20/2012 - 10:49pm.

My wife and I make financial decisions together and she thought it was too much to dish out for me being entertained for a 20 minute commute and it was hard for me to disagree.

If it makes you feel any better I listen to Mark Levin on the way home. If he went to satellite exclusively I would not have subcribed to satellite either.

Well, rad

I gotta admit Mr. Stern has done well for only having a "comic routine" that is fresh and exciting in a boys' middle school locker room.

It does not surprise me that shawn acts as if he is a deity.
