Bozell Column: Hollywood's Gay-Marriage Thank You Card

By Brent Bozell | May 12, 2012 | 09:06

Brent Bozell's picture

So Barack Obama declared he’s all for “gay marriage.” Really, was anyone surprised? Did anyone doubt it? Still, it’s official, and Obama is now the rental property of Hollywood. Obama’s doing all sorts of fundraisers with Hollywood and Manhattan millionaires and billionaires to get re-elected, the latest at George Clooney’s mansion. One of every six of his “bundlers” is openly homosexual.

At the start of this drama, Vice President Biden openly declared (accidentally or not) he was entirely comfortable with men marrying men and women marrying women, and credited Hollywood. “When things really began to change is when the social culture changes,” Biden syntax-garbled on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

He added, with a nod toward NBC, “I think ‘Will & Grace’ probably did more to educate the American public than almost anybody’s ever done so far. People fear that which is different. Now they’re beginning to understand.”

So let’s get this straight. Network executives and TV critics and their public-policy defenders have insisted for decades that raunchy TV shows have zero effect on the audience (including young children), and that complainers are paranoid to accuse the networks of promoting a social or sexual agenda. Then, when the president “evolves” to support “gay marriage,” the politicians send Thank You cards to Tinseltown for “opening the minds” of the masses.

What does he think NBC is? “Masterpiece Theatre”? They began airing “Will and Grace” in 1998 at 9:30, then moved it into the family hour. This was the kind of sexual raunch they promoted as comedy, and which our Vice President presumably considered “educational” for families.

– The most outrageously gay character Jack announced he needed "a new pair of shoes, preferably with a six-foot, gorgeous hunk of man in them." Later, he took Will and Grace's dog for a walk in the park, where he said the dog "checked out butts and I checked out butts."

– Jack joked: "I get a little funny in the tummy around the Washington Monument."

– Jack said he and a boyfriend had agreed to attend the Greenwich Village Halloween parade. "We had a whole Biblical thing planned," Jack explained to Will. "We were gonna go as Adam and Steve." Later, as Jack left for the parade, Will lectured, "Don't put anything in your mouth that isn't wrapped."

On the day Obama proclaimed his change of heart, The New York Times published a promotional front-page article headlined “Gay TV: It’s All In the Family.” Readers were treated to “Modern Family” co-creator Christopher Lloyd asserting “What this is about, really, is how far America has come, not how far television has come.”

Inside the paper were large pictures of two marrying women on “Grey’s Anatomy” and two gay men with their adopted toddler on “Modern Family.” In large text, the Times proclaimed “An implicit recasting of the American family is welcomed by viewers.” They claimed complaints “barely ever bubble to the surface.”

How desperately did the Times want to hide the traditionalist view? Reporter Brian Stelter claimed “Mitt Romney is known to be a fan of ‘Modern Family,’ and a Catholic group gave it a media award this month.”

But when the Times linked to evidence Romney loves “Modern Family,” their own story only claimed that young Romney aide Garrett Jackson recommended the show to him, and Romney got Jackson hooked on “Friday Night Lights,” the canceled high-school football drama.

As for the “Catholic” group awarding a pro-gay show, this same “Catholic In Media Associates” (for entertainment industry insiders) had previously honored both “Glee” and “Ugly Betty,” two other “educational” shows promoting homosexuality. If that’s a Catholic church group, then Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi are Catholics in good standing, and Kathleen Sebelius hasn’t been excommunicated.

The Times writer did not explain one reason gay characters can be portrayed as “welcomed by viewers” is that any audience of any size can be generalized into a groundswell of mainstream support if the press wants it so. Just how much of a blockbuster, how popular, is Fox’s “Glee,” the current rage of Hollywood? Well, it’s drawing six million viewers, what we are to believe is an avalanche. But in a nation of 311 million, that means 98 percent of Americans aren’t watching.

Obviously, Hollywood has played a part in eroding America’s moral character on “gay marriage.” It’s about time somebody admitted that Hollywood isn’t just persuading people into buying Wrigley’s Gum or McDonald’s burgers. In between the commercials, they’re selling a radical devolution in moral standards.

People fear that which is different

Submitted by misterbee241 on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 10:31am.

How typically liberal. No, people are wary of the things they know are not morally right and not helpful. You see, Joe, we were not given a spirit of fear, but one of a sound mind. But being a liberal and a dunce (is there a stronger word than dunce? If so that's the one I want to use), you have no idea about that.

If you're not getting flak, you're not over the target.

Who To Run Against?

Submitted by HardRightTurn on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 11:24am.

Bitme or Billary? BC has already brokered a deal with The O to run HRC as VPOTUS. Remember that round of golf the two of them played a while ago? Well, BC so much as told The O that if he didn't switch HRC for Bitme, he, BC, would broker a deal at the convention to run HRC for POTUS.

Considering The O's many recent gaffes and weakening polling numbers, I think WMR and the RNC should think about campaigning against HRC instead of The O. It could get so bad for The O that the Left will dump him.

To more fully comprehend the Left, one must read “Leftism As Psychopathy” by John Ray, M.A., Ph.D. Caution, it might scare you a little bit.

Submitted by cajun2 on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 2:01pm.

Up at the top of the page is a statement.....exposing and combating liberal media bias.....
This is what Newsbusters does. And the big news of the week, being covered by every media outlet, is Obama "coming out" on his stance regarding "gay marriage"..

The media have been popping the corks on the champagne bottles and dancing on stage. Not a word from anyone with an opposing view. The media ignores the fact that 32 states have voted down gay marriage proposals..(pardon the pun)

Stay tuned or tune out because in a few days, Obama will say or do something absolutely historic and unprecedented and the media will go nuts again. Then NB will have multiple threads on various media idiots who celebrate the latest historic event. It could be about eating dog, the latest announcement of the largest oil reserve in the world found in Colo/Wyoming/Utah, or Mooochelle has bought a new dress and lookis great. Tune in or tune out, your choice.

Because it's a key issue of the left. In their promotion of it they attack Christianity, freedom of religion, and free speech. Many of us would prefer NOT to have it in the forefront, but ignoring an issue only gives the left more power. Sorry the conversations aren't to your liking. Dear Frank*

Submitted by cajun2 on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 9:41pm.

You introduced yourself to NB this morning with "I'm a cripple and I am in the ER"..Then you went on and on about all this gay-gay-gay stuff at NB.

A long day it must have been for you but I see you have not yet figured this out. We are all conservatives here at NB except for a few resident libs. We also do not have a "conservie meter' to test to see who is the most conservative nor the most insulting or profane.

The purpose of NB is not to debate articles or opinions but it is about the bias in the liberal media and how the media covers issues. If the news of the day is the economy, we will see numerous threads about the economy. Obama came out on gay marriage, hence we have a barrage of media spew about gays. As I posted to you earlier, if you dont like todays news, tune out. Come back went the news of the day is more relevant to your views.

We dont care if you are a cripple. You can type just as well as the rest of us. There are other posters here at NB that are also "cripples' but they dont tell dwell on that part of their lives. There are veterans here as well who have served their country. There are also teachers, electricians, lawyers, doctors, social workers, and many other skilled and knowledged folks that post here. That means we have a wide range of views. We will all disagree on some aspects but there is no grading system on the value of someones posts. If so, we would kick lots of posters outta here. Griping, whinning, insults, profanity and disrespect to a persons religious beliefs are not well accepted here.

Notice that the few posters that have replied to you today are all women and generally we have asked you to be more respectful and we have done so in a respectful manner. Hmmm....it could be because we all recognize that you are having a difficult time and maybe today more than others. But sympathy only goes so far.

You dont seem to know the posters here very well. Study some of the people and you may be surprised to learn that many share your beliefs just not your presentation...

Gooday Frank

And you veterans here...come to 11301 Wilshire Blvd. and learn what many here believe- that it is this lust for power coming out of greed that is responsible for so many of Our Contry's problems. As Scriptue says 'The love of money is the root of all evil.

Please read the entire thread again. I have not been insulting or offensive but rather as respectful and patient as I could be knowing you were in difficulty.

Your anger and frustration is the defining issue in all of your posts. Your stated position or opinion on issues is difficult to discern due to the anger and your attacks on other posters who are trying to understand your points.

Expressing ones anger and sometimes fear with the current political mess can be a healthy release with such avenues as NB. However, though I am not a doctor, it is common sense that when anger and anxiety is in the forefront, the effects can make other health issues more pronounced.

Take care of your health problems, deal with the anger, then feel free to join us for debates.

Good luck and thank you for your service.

TV's Influence

Submitted by Netstatter on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 2:48pm.

Mr. Bozell is right; we've been told many times that TV shows have zero effect on the audience. If TV has so little influence, then why do we have TV commercials? TV is one avenue the Left uses to try and advance its pet philosophies and ideas. What the rational ones among us have to do is limit our viewing, be careful of what we watch, use filters when watching TV, and counter-balance TV with some good wholesome critical thinking and wholesome reading (the Bible is one good book to read to keep oneself morally on the right track).

Every time you sit down in front of the TV practice, practice, practice questioning the premises, in both the commercials and in the shows.
