NB Publisher Bozell to Comcast Chairman: Time to Clean House at MSNBC
Editor's Note: What follows is a letter sent by Mr. Bozell to Comcast Chairman Brian L. Roberts earlier today.
Dear Mr. Roberts,
By now, you are well aware of the Media Research Center’s (MRC) concerns with MSNBC. Last week, I wrote letters to both you and Mr. Griffin asking for Ed Schultz’s termination because of highly controversial and deplorable comments he routinely makes about women and conservatives. Yesterday, I posted an open letter to Mr. Griffin about equally controversial and appalling comments made by Al Sharpton; comments that are blatantly racist and xenophobic, and which in one instance led to the death of an innocent bystander.
Because of these well documented instances of unacceptable comments made by both Sharpton and Schultz, I have called for their termination. I have also called for Mr. Griffin to resign as president of MSNBC. In my March 15 letter I called on you to clean house at MSNBC.
As unrealistic as it may appear, perhaps it is the case that you were unaware of their statements. Now you know. Why, then, after all the evidence we have provided on Ed Schultz and Al Sharpton’s unacceptable track record, have you done nothing? Why are mudslingers like Schultz and Sharpton still at MSNBC, when there are thousands of promising, talented young journalists who would objectively report on the big news of the day?
Because of your silence, I can only assume you think we will cease our efforts. And/or you agree with Al Sharpton’s and Ed Schultz’s racist, xenophobic, and misogynistic bombast.
Let me assure you, we will not stop our campaign to hold MSNBC responsible for disseminating hate. You would be well advised to consider the impact this campaign will have on Comcast’s reputation, as well as the reputation of Comcast’s subsidiaries, such as NBC. Comcast owns MSNBC. You own the content. Take responsibility for it.
Do you agree with the hateful remarks made by Ed Schultz (here is our most recent letter about him)?
Do you agree with the racist remarks made by Al Sharpton (here is our most letter about him)
Let me allow you to set the record straight. Your response will be reprinted, in full.
If you choose not to respond, I will assume you, along with Al Sharpton, think that it is okay to throw around the N word. I will assume that you agree with Ed Schultz that women who disagree with you are “sluts.” I will assume that you agree with all the other hate filled rhetoric these hate mongers spew on a regular basis.
As the Chairman of MSNBC’s parent company, Comcast, you are ultimately responsible for Ed Schultz’s and Al Sharpton’s unhinged and uncivil tirades. Ed Schultz and Al Sharpton have been at the forefront of a breathtakingly disingenuous and hypocritical campaign to fire Rush Limbaugh over controversial comments he made about Georgetown Law student and leftwing activist Sandra Fluke. For two of the most vicious and vulgar MSNBC hosts to declare war on Rush Limbaugh over a remark he later apologized for, pushes the limits of hypocrisy.
Mr. Roberts, the ball is in your court. So far, Phil Griffin refuses to take responsibility for his hires. As the chairman of Comcast, I hope that you would agree that Comcast should not give a platform to rabble rousers like Al Sharpton and Ed Schultz to engage in slander, hate, and divisiveness.
I want to give you another opportunity to do the right thing on behalf of your board and your shareholders and immediately ask for Phil Griffin’s resignation. By hiring and promoting unhinged, unrepentant hatemongers, Mr. Griffin has demonstrated beyond any doubt that he is unfit to oversee a news network.
You are welcome to set the record straight about any of the issues we raised at any time. I will post your comments on MRC’s website. However, at this point, since I have not heard from you I am taking my message directly to Comcast’s Board of Directors. They will soon hear from the hundreds of thousands of Americans who agree with me that hate speech from the likes of Ed Schultz and Al Sharpton has no place in a news organization.
Sincerely,
L. Brent Bozell III

Love it.
Maybe we should all start emailing copies of Brents letter to Griffin and Roberts with the addendum "WE AGREE!!!".
Or print out the letter and MAIL it.
I wonder what they would think if every member of NewsBusters and the MRC did this?

Too late! They already do! They have no cards on the table. They've already used them. You have the full deck! Continue to use them!

Dude! They're Marxists!! They are not going to do a damn thing about anything unless it furthers their goal. The prize is in sight now, and the only thing that'll move 'em back a little is soundly defeating them in Nov. - but they'll be back at it, just like a dog getting back in the trash.
I hope Emperor Ming was copied in.

You lose me when you try to silence speech with which you disagree. It's cable, not network. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Low ratings get people fired, not this nonsense.
Are yoru ready to reap what you approve sowing?

Perhaps you think this sort of stuff has no consequence. I bet MSNBC does not think this way. It is evident that MSNBC WANTS to foment racism and hatred. Brent Bozell and just about everybody who participates at this web site hope and want more for our country and our society.
So you’re cool with a major network specializing in, and makes a business of, fomenting incendiary hate and racism, eh? Perhaps you think hateful and racists campaigns have no consequences. History proves you wrong again and again.
- Looking forward to the self-annihilation of the Manipulated Stories Machine.

You're no different than the leftists who say/do the same thing about Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, etc. Just a different ideology.
Republicans/conservatives should always be on the side of free speech. Always. If you find it hateful or wrong-headed, you should absolutely challenge it, repudiate it and boycott it -- but to call on corporate bosses to silence it? Pathetic. It's the tactic of the other side.
Me, I just choose not to watch it -- like 99.9% of other Americans.

techniques are available to accomplish our goals. Turning the channel, email and letter writing, boycotting network and advertisers, peaceful demonstrations, contributions and voting are legitimate ways of attempting to influence outcomes. I believe you would agree that if the desired outcome is to affect change, turning the channel is not nearly as effective as the other techniques I mentioned.

No one seriously thinks the letter will get anyone fired. It's to show the hypocrisy of the left's attacks on Limbaugh and how they don't apologize very often if at all.
Sharpton should be canned, but that's a different matter.
Comcast is a tainted brand, as is NBC

I can't understand how any decent person would purchase Comcast products and invest in Comcast stocks, because the money you spend on Comcast is what is financing Roberts, Griffin and the far-left radical hate mongers at NBC.
You lose me...

"You lose me when you try to silence speech with which you disagree."
Sharpton and Shultz are public figures, and in the performance of their jobs they claim moral superiority in their attitudes about race and gender, and explicitly accuse others of harboring vile attitudes about the same issues. If we don't fight to expose their lies and hypocrisy, theirs will be the only voices heard and we will lose the argument by default. These guys play dirty and will walk all over anybody who wants to play by the Marqis of Queensbury rules.
If Comcast wants my money, they should not let scoundrels like these two insult my intelligence.
Let them talk. I trust

Let them talk. I trust Americans to know nonsense when they hear it. Fools like Schultz and Sharpton don't advance the liberal agenda -- they expose it, and help kill it. Let them.
Trying to get them fired just gives them a sense of relevance they don't deserve. It's counter-productive. An NBC boss who only cares about ratings doesn't care if on-air talent's getting hate mail or love letters -- either way it proves people are watching.

I don't think this is a free speech issue. Like one response indicated that this was to expose the hypocrisy the left uses to silence people like Rush, not because he lies, but because he tells the truth! The left doesn't like the truth. It's bothersome to them. I can see why.
If the only difference between the program hosts at MSNBC and Fox was ideology, then this is a free speech issue. But it's not. On one side, there is disagreement. The other...disagreement AND vitriol hatred...in their speech. Hence this calling out. I totally support it.
To suggest MSNBC and Fox are the same except for political and social views is naive at best. Maybe it starts there, but it doesn't end there. And most people know it. Hence the ratings at Fox.
I've always wondered how MSNBC accounts for the huge ratings success at Fox. They say the truth? Yes, but they won't admit that! They have better talent? Yes, but they won't admit that! They're more fair and balanced? Yes, but they won't admit that either! I really wonder what there "excuse" is.
