Brent Bozell to Media: Tell the Truth About Obama's Assault on Religious Freedom, Millions Served by the Catholic Church

By Brent Bozell | February 06, 2012 | 14:54

Brent Bozell's picture

Editor's Note: What follows is a letter that NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center president Brent Bozell sent to the presidents of the news divisions of ABC, CBS, and NBC as well as to CNN president Jim Walton. It has also been carbon copied to 10 leaders representing various Catholic and Protestant faith organizations.

The broadcast and cable television networks need to report the current, unprecedented assault against freedom of religion in this country, as well as the millions of Americans who would be left out in the cold by the Obama administration if it does not rescind HHS’s recently issued insurance mandate requiring contraceptive coverage.  As our statistics and analysis below outline, they are not, and it’s a glaring double standard.

First, allow us to offer perspective on whom this new mandate affects. There are more than 65 million Catholics in the United States. Collectively, they operate more than 7,000 Catholic schools to educate children of all faiths and backgrounds. They also manage hundreds of health care facilities. In fact, one in six patients in the United States is cared for in a Catholic hospital.

All of these institutions and countless other Catholic-run charities will be forced to close their doors – or forfeit their most fundamental and deeply held religious beliefs if the Obama administration’s new mandate is not rescinded. The mandate forces these religious institutions to provide insurance covering sterilizations, abortion-causing drugs and artificial contraceptives, all of which fly in the face of Catholic teaching.

Yet to date, the broadcast networks have nearly ignored it. In contrast, in reaction to a decision that would affect vastly fewer potential patients, the networks pounced on the Susan G. Komen Foundation's decision (now overturned) to cease a measly $480,000 in a grant to Planned Parenthood, the country's largest abortion provider

Since the mandate was finalized on January 20, 2012:

  • ABC and NBC waited 16 days to cover the anti-Catholic ruling, finally citing the new rule on “This Week” and “Meet the Press” on February 5.

  • CBS waited 10 days to mention it on “This Morning” and provided no subsequent coverage.

  • CNN briefly mentioned the rule when it was announced on January 20th, then didn’t bother to mention it again for 10 days.

That stands in sharp contrast to the decision of the private Komen Foundation, when these same networks almost instantly piled on with publicity that helped fill Planned Parenthood's coffers and added to the pressure that forced Komen to reverse.

In fact, as of February 5th, ABC, CBS and NBC covered the Komen controversy six times more than the anti-Catholic HHS law.

New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan has said this new law “is as much an attack on access to health care as on religious freedom” and bishops across the country have issued the strongest letters in memory condemning this assault on religious liberty.  Indeed, non-Catholic institutions across the country have joined the Catholic Church in condemning the administration, so you have no lack of experts and interviewees to discuss this outrage on-air.

The double standard is clear for all to see.  You are ignoring the attack on the freedom of religion by the Obama administration, but coming to the aid of Planned Parenthood because you agree with them.

Your network must cover the administration’s insurance mandate accurately and comprehensively for what it is – an unprecedented assault against religion and a devastating blow to the millions of American school children, sick, elderly and poor of all religious faiths that are served by these Catholic institutions.  If you refuse, and limit your networks to reporting about the Komen Foundation’s decision to pull funding from Planned Parenthood, then you cannot be seen as anything but an anti-Catholic, pro-abortion advocate.

Report both sides.

Sincerely,

L.Brent Bozell III

I have to say that the real

Submitted by Liberallies on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 3:25pm.

I have to say that the real problem in America is that people either simply do not care or people talk about it a lot, but do nothing to make changes.

It is great to be here and point to the obvious, Obama hates religions which stand on his way to transform America. However, if you are interested in making a difference, even if it is a tiny difference, go here, http://wh.gov/kl3, and sign the petition. After you sign it, follow the instructions and PASS IT ON to a friend! We must show Obama that we are a loud voice who WILL vote him out of office.

Conservative and Liberal Catholics are coming together on this.

Talking about it amongst friends, debating this with Liberals who support this wacko of President is great, but I am of the belief that we must take any and all legal and moral actions to stop this President.

Newt, Romney or Santorum. i will support any of these three candidates. I am tired of the in-fighting in the Republican party which has become quite ugly. We will hand a second term to this looney toon in Office and to those who think like him who are currently working in his administration.

Cool Arrow, Well, it is

Submitted by Liberallies on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 3:55pm.

Cool Arrow,

Well, it is about time that the Roman Catholic Church in the USA and across the world cleaned up Her act and stood up to an administration which too many bishops supported during Obamacare debate.

During the 60s, 70s and early 80s, Catholic seminars accepted too many Liberal wackos because these seminars believed that if they reflected the world, the World would accepted the Church. Well, we know where this has gone....pedophilia scandals, support for ridiculous Liberal policies which do much more harm than good, etc.

I am sick and tired of bishops, like the very Liberal one in Los Angeles and the one in Chicago before our current one, who are very Liberal and have lead their flock astray. In a way, as I have read in quite a few Conservative and Liberal blogs, the Church is getting what too many of Her bishops in the USA supported, Obamacare. We are getting what 56% of Roman Catholics voted for, President Obama. Granted many of the "Catholics" who make up this 56% are clueless about the Church's teachings, but whose fault is this? Theirs or the Church, which includes me? And what is the excuse of the very Liberal bishops?

Thankfully, we are getting much more conservative bishops now which aling more with the teaching sof the Church. I just hope it is not too little too late. I am still waiting for bishops in San Francisco, Mass., Illinois, Pennsylvania, etc, etc to start staiting publicly that politicians who publicly support abortion, abortive contraceptives, homosexuality, homosexual marriage etc. are not to be given communion unless they publicly renounce and denounce their radical ideology. I believe the only one who has come close to doing this is a bishop in St. Louis.

As everyone here knows, I am not one to ever criticize my Church publicly, but some of the bishops who have run things in the USA have done a lot of harm and have led their flock over a cliff.

Obama has declared war on religion and if we do not stand up to this wacko, our children, our children's children, etc, etc. will not know what it means to live in a nation which has Freedom of Religion.

Yesterday, I was in a Mass for Spanish speaking individuals. The letter from Bishop Dolan was read during the Mass. I hope that the Latinos in Mass listened well because too many of these vote Democratic believing that the Democratic party is goinng to "fix" their immigration issues.

Bishop Dolan has drawn the line. The line being, the RCC will not comply with the law. I hope if and when the time comes, Bishop Dolan keeps his word.

I don't know if it was true,

Submitted by motherbelt on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 3:38pm.

I don't know if it was true, but a long time ago I read about a Bishop who was faced with the loss of public school buses to transport kids to Catholic schools. Apparently the mayor and city council (I believe it was Chicago) thought that was an unacceptable intersection of civics and faith.

Said Bishop went to the mayor and said basically: OK, I will shut down all the Catholic schools, as of the end of this month, and the next day all of those students will be registering in your public schools, so start figuring out how you will accommodate them.

The mayor changed his mind.

In this case, I'm still not convinced that this isn't just a tactic by the Obama administration to force Catholic institutions to drop insurance coverage for employees, dumping more people into the public insurance pool.

Motherbelt, Well, it looks

Submitted by Liberallies on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 4:04pm.

Motherbelt,

Well, it looks to me that the administration is worried enough that they are putting out op-ed pieces in major USA newspapers. I read Katherine Sebelius piece on USA Today. I also read a statement put out throught the White House website from a higher up in the administration.

However, reading comments in USA Today and other places, there are people who simply do not understand what is the big deal. At the end, it doesn't matter because, as it always should, it looks like, by Bishop Dolan's statement, that the Church has drawn a line they will not cross.

Let's get this straight. This is not about contraceptives. This is about a President ordering organizations and institutions run by religions, i.e. Catholic hospitals, Catholic Schools, Catholic universities, which were created by the Church to take care of the needy, poor, middle class, rich, everyone regardless of economic background while teaching and following Catholic dogmas and tenants, to violate one of its religious teachings.

The Church is not foribiding anyone from buying contraceptives and in fact, it will NOT punish anyone for buying and using these. The Church clearly and simply states and teaches, using contraceptives is wrong, it is a sin, but you have the Free Will to buy them where ever you please. However, you can't force the Roman Catholic Church to buy contraceptives for you, through an insurance, because it makes the Church complicit in the sin. it forces the Church to go against Her teachings.

The RCC should apply for a waiver from HHS

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 5:28pm.

Over 1400 enterprises from major corporations to local governments to labor unions have been granted waivers.

The RCC should make a very public request to HHS, printing the application in supportive newspapers and posting it online, and throw the ball back into Obama's side of the court. If Obama rejects it, then the RCC should post ads about GE and AARP getting waivers while they can't get one.

I think that's the key Mother

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Tue, 02/07/2012 - 10:45am.

If conservatives, be they individuals, organizations, or politicians, clearly state their position and the reason for it, then STAND by it regardless of the hype thrown at them, they will always win the issue. The left has no facts or cogent arguments for their philosophy. They ALWAYS rely on emotion, twisted facts, and outright lies as their argument. They virtually never have any facts to back up their position. The line needs to be drawn in the sand, and like all bullies, they will almost always back down. They have a pack mentality (re: OWS and others like them). They never stand alone, and can't stand up to anyone who calls their bluff.

There's an answer

Submitted by deadeyedan on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 3:52pm.

There has been a candidate who knows exactly what the problems are because he has consistently attacked both the media and O'b's assault on religious service providers.

That's Newt Gingrich. Why is it no surprise that he also led the fight that allowed the Republicans to take Congress after forty years of entrenched Democratic autocracy, balanced the budget for the only time in our lifetimes and held unemployment to 4.2% (based on authentic, unfudged data) or that he has the vision to figure out the value of a completely reinvigorated space program?

Yes, that space program that begot life-saving pacemakers, CT-scans, MRI's and considerable improvements in dialysis. And who can measure the benefits of the digital age (laptops, I-phones, CAD's, the very internet you're on now, etc.)? There's GPS, ability to spot a hurricane the very moment it forms, ease of instantaneous world-wide communication and countless other "unintended" consequences of space exploration, especially manned.

It's Newt who understands best what the problems are and who to blame.

It does not fit the media

Submitted by John21 on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 4:01pm.

It does not fit the media agenda, it will not happen.

You are under the misconception the the media cares about the lower class people, they do not. They only care about the elite and the liberal elitist agenda, in their minds what is good for the liberals is good for the country.
Facts, evidence and common sense means nothing to these propagandist. They are and have been anti-religion for decades, to them all things religious is anti liberal thoughts and must be stamped out. It will not further their socialist goals so it must be ignored or excused.

Freedom is defined by them for them and that is only to be based on the Socialist Agenda.

John21, Excellent line,

Submitted by Liberallies on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 4:26pm.

John21,

Excellent line, "Freedom is defined by them for them and that is only to be the based on Socialist Agenda."

All one has to do is listen and see in action the likes of John Kerry, John Edwards, President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, late Ted Kennedy, Oprah, Al Gore, Geitghner, Sebelius and the countless of multi-millionare Liberals. They love to tell us what we should do with our money. They love to tell us how we should pay more taxes. They love to tell us how we should share with everyone....but when you look at their UNPAID taxes, when you look at how much they gave in charity, when you look at the lavish vacations they take, staying in hotel rooms which cost $10,000 a night, having 5 and 6 mansions spread throughout Europe and the USA, their preaching really becomes, "do as I say and not as I do!"

I have never understood why a Liberal would follow and believe any of these Liberal multi-millionares. And my problem is NOT that they are millionares. My problem is that they love to tell us where we must put our money while they do not lead by example.

the 1%? Look at the Liberal multi-millionares!

I have been waiting three years for this Christian-hating Kenyan

Submitted by Dave. on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 5:10pm.

...Muslim communist to overreach to the point it touches off a rebellion.

Hopefully this will finally be it, because if this aspiring dictator is allowed to get away with this abomination, he will be able to get away with just about anything.

He practically is already, due mostly to the spinelessness of the most useless congress on record, as well as an American population that has been largely dumbed down to the point of rank stoopidity.

Here's hoping the Catholic Church, along with all of Christian America, and everyone who appreciates true freedom, will up and tell this bogus POTUS, along with commie-czar Sebelius, to go stuff themselves.

There is no constitutional authority whatsoever for these hideous tyrants to be doing what they are attempting.

No authority

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 5:26pm.

Go one step further, Dave, there's no constitutional authority whatsoever for allowing these hideous tyrants to be doing what they are attempting.  For those of you in Rio Linda, that means the Sentate, the Congress, and even the SCOTUS standing by and doing nothing.(even though a petition of some kind has to be brought to the SCOTUS or however that works, but I refer to the actions and laws taken and the liberal justices like Ginsburg dissing the Constitution like she did for example.  Fox News is finally reporting on that btw, that'll get viewed by a lot more people)

Cowards, all.
