Bozell Column: Cultural Winners and Losers, 2011
The depravity of our popular culture and our eagerness to shred traditional values manifests itself every day. Lady Gaga, the top-earning woman in the music business and deemed by ABC’s Barbara Walters to be one of the “most fascinating people,” has a new vocation in mind. She’s announced she wants to become an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church so she can marry two gay male friends.
Lady Gaga is as unattractive, in every sense of the word, as her name is stupid. She welcomed Easter with a single called “Judas” (“I’m still in love with Judas, baby”) and arrives at Christmas as Reverend Gaga. This is the same “instant online ordination” that TBS late-night host Conan O’Brien used in November in a disgusting scene to “marry” two gay males live on his television show. Gaga and Conan are two of the real cultural losers of 2011. Here are some other winners and losers:
Loser: “The Book of Mormon,” the ghastly hit Broadway musical from the perpetually immature makers of “South Park.” Most media outlets celebrated it as “brilliant” – so spouted so-called drama critic Jake Tapper on ABC. But Wall Street Journal critic Terry Teachout put it best. “It’s flabby, amateurish, and very, very safe.” Safe? Trashing the Mormons? Yes. “Making fun of Mormons in front of a Broadway crowd is like shooting trout in a demitasse cup...on the subject of imitation courage, let it be duly noted that if the title of this show were ‘The Quran,’ it wouldn't have opened.”
Winner: Disney and its reissue of “The Lion King” in theaters as a 3-D feature. Seventeen years after its screen debut, it opened in mid-September and grossed more money in ticket receipts in its first rerun weekend (more than $30 million) than the three genuine new releases combined. It grossed more than $94 million in its three-month revisitation, despite many families already owning it on DVD.
Loser: The Fox show “Glee,” which seems to be losing all its popularity in only its third season. After its 3-D concert movie came in 123rd for the year (with a gross of less than $12 million, about 12 percent of the take of the “The Lion King” remake), its third season lowlight was a preachy episode about the loathsome and overrated idea of virginity in these modern, enlightened times.
Loser: NBC’s “The Playboy Club” and MTV’s “Skins.” Both shows promised to scandalize audiences and bring in younger viewers by the truckload. Both of them were so badly made they turned off viewers as well as advertisers by the truckload. Both shows have been deposited at the town dump.
Winner: Ben Shapiro, for his book “Primetime Propaganda,” which laid out a long history of Hollywood’s propagandizing (and censorship of conservative actors and producers) that he mastered despite being only 27 years old. Shapiro’s stories of leftist intolerance (actors like Fred Thompson aren’t exactly welcomed on the set of TV shows like “Law & Order”) was eye-opening.
Winner: Fifteen-year-old high school wrestler Joel Northrup, who caused a national controversy for taking the old-fashioned position that it was disrespectful to enter a wrestling ring with a girl at the state tournament in Iowa. Although he entered the tournament with a commanding 35-4 record, Joel forfeited rather than violate his religious principles against Cassy Herkelman. This conflict could repeat itself in a few months, and no one should doubt he will make the same stand.
Loser: Adam Mansbach, the author of the children’s picture book titled “Go the F*** to Sleep.” Designed to make underslept parents laugh, it makes “comedians” like Mansbach sound desperate for a cheap laugh. Barnes & Noble helpfully recommended to buyers other tomes in this genre. They hope you’ll also enjoy other literary works of high art like “S— My Dad Says,” “Farts,” and “[A-Words] Finish First.”
Winner: Emilio Estevez, for stepping outside the Tinseltown comfort zone to make a love letter of a film called “The Way.” No studio chief was going to green-light a movie about Christian pilgrims hiking the “camino” to the shrine of the apostle James in northwestern Spain. But Estevez made the film anyway, and cast his father Martin Sheen in the lead role.
Estevez told the EWTN network that “Hollywood is a very difficult place to be earnest and be heartfelt. And I am not interested in making films that are anything but. There’s a lot of vulgarity in films. There’s a lot of violence, casual sex – things that make me uncomfortable watching – and I’m not interested in perpetuating that message.”
That deserves another ovation at year’s end.

I won't deign to speak for ol' race-card throwing Mel but after listening to the segment I'll take a guess:
I presume Mel is upset about Brent discussing Chris Mathews saying Newt looks like a car bomber and saying it would be akin to Sean Hannity saying Obama looks like "a skinny, ghetto crackhead," and then adding "which by the way you might wanna say Barack Obama does" (starts around the 3:30 mark).
Methinks Mel is just throwing bombs to stir up things.
No...

Mel is just a libtard.
Remember how they think... you can't say or imply anything that could, in any way, ever be construed as having anything to do with race about liberal blacks. But they can pretty much spew anything they want against Herman Cain, Thomas, or Rice, and they are even blatantly racist about it. Uncle Tom, not really black, an Oreo, etc.
Yet, if you point out that Obama's only heritage of American slavery is that his white mother is decended from Kentucky slave owners, you get called a racist.

Tell us the qoute, or apologize. You can't just dump out an accusation like that, without even providing a link, or exact qoute and expect anything other than contempt.
I'd expect if what you say is true, it;d be all over the net, and cable news, the left is just dying to find any dirt on it's critics. Since I haven't heard about this before,. or it seems the others here either.. it looks less like something Mr. Bozell said, than like the manic ravings of the usual leftwing crank.
Put up, or shut up.
Model has already linked the segment in question,

which has in fact received a good deal of attention around the net. Others can argue the racial connotations, but I believe even Brent would consider his quip ill-advised, especially in view of the reason for his appearance on Fox. It diminished the very valid point Bozell had just made about Matthews' outrageous description of Gingrich.

I see the qoute as deliberately inartful, he was making a point.
True enough, subtlty is lost on many people, especially the perpetually offended. I do not read Huff n Puff, beyond the links provided by various conservative sites. I don't want to end up spending hours posting and rebutting stuff I see there. Can't stop myself, when I see something I percieve as horrifically unfair, I try and post. I'm not all that old, 52, but my wife, first and only wife, is 36, her sisters near that, so I hear lots of the younger people. Some love South Park, but far from all. I've luaghed at a few of their jokes, but when they the supposedly cutting edge, fearless culture critics caved on the Mohammad show....
It showed them to be the same old posers that the rest of Hollywood are.
They ridicule Christians like they are going down a checklist, (3. slip in Christian snark every third joke,.... check)... this,
"Brilliant satire and an ability to break down issues of the day in a way we all could relate"
Speak for yourself only please, "we all could relate" might have applied to Cosby, or a show which doesn't routinely p*ss off just about everybody. The ability to annoy your dad's generation hardly is any great truth, it's the natural tendency to rebel, it also doesn't make the Park people brilliant, it just makes them think they are.
You're wrong both about their brilliance, and their universal appeal. Their audience is little different than Jon Stewarts. It's not about funny, but about hurting the right people. They take on Islam in a truly courageous way, or liberals in more than a prefunctory way, I might change my mind. They won't, because they're as co-opted as the rest,.. they toss us an occasional bone between beatings.. and we're supposed to be greatful?
I dunno about being grateful...

The first four or five episodes of Glee were pretty good until the politics come into it. Then it was just like every other show on TV.
Tat, SP ain't conservative TV. Parker and Stone are libertarians not conservative republicans. Altough, there are some episodes that are spot on satire of liberals.
And when are some people going to wake up and realize gay marriage is about a lot more than just marriage. Once the definition of marriage is changed culturally and legally the cork comes out of the genie's bottle. I don't care if two men or two women have a legal document declaring them life partners but marriage is completely different. Polygamists are grinning ear to ear with every victory gay marriage proponents secure. Because if you can marry the same sex why not more than one person?

The picks have nothing to do with financial success or failure.
Just because something is financially successful doesn't mean it is culturally uplifting. That is the point of Mr. Bozell's opinion piece. You are of course free to disagree with his choices/opinions but disagreeing due to financial considerations is missing the point.
Merry Christmas!

Yes, cajun, but you have to change the premise to make that argument.
How Bozell defines winner and loser seems to change depending on the category.
I'm not arguing that he's wrong; only that he's inconsistent.
Are we talking about popularity? It seems so at first. But then it switches to how Bozell rates the cultural value of things.

End of Times
Submitted by Joe W. on Sat, 12/24/2011 - 2:38pm.
Having recently read up on and researched the Biblical "End of Times" Prophecy, my conclusion is that this is precisely what has been expected. In fact, this is merely the beginning of the total collapse of morality among those not accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior. The persecution of Christians is increasing exponentially, and it will only get much worse, and not better. A point in fact is that ALL Biblical Prophecies have been met, preparatory to God's rapture of the church, when all Christians and young children will be taken up to Heaven to dwell with the Lord. This will leave those non believers and those "fence sitters" left behind to survive the Great Tribulation. While it will not be any sort of picnic, God will still permit His people to repent of their sins and accept Jesus as Savior and the only means with which to reach an eternal existence in Heaven.
In fact, this very post will be mocked and ridiculed as having been authored by some "religious nut", who believes in that which is a lie, or a fairy tale, or other such rubbish. I have no problem with this mockery or animosity, other than the fact that it saddens me to witness so many, otherwise good, decent people thumbing their noses at the reality of a glorious eternity in Heaven. I can handle the hate and judgement, as I am secure in my belief in God Almighty and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross at Calvary. I have confessed of and repented of my sins, and I have welcomed Christ as my Lord and the master of my life.
This is my Christmas wish for all of you: If you have accepted Christ, Bless you and have a wonderful Christmas. If you have yet to do so, I pray you seek and find a relationship with God that will lead you to His Son, Jesus Christ. At the very least, spend a little time this Christmas to do a little research on your own. You will never regret it. May God Bless you all, and Merry Christmas!!!

What We Need Is an Escape Valve For Depravity
Submitted by Avitar on Mon, 12/26/2011 - 3:49am.
By that I mean we need to think about what will happen if policy follows down paths to some really sick results. For example we have a current account deficit that is amounting to trillions of dollars. India and China have a severe shortage of girls and will have a shortage of women ten years from now.
How long before the politicians who like running trade deficits try selling girls to the India? "Help I am being held in the back of a Chinese laundry” doesn’t have to just be a punch line.
We are still fighting those who want an abortion industry for human spare parts. Adding "improvements" to your offspring is entirely possible and very desirable but carries a ton of dangers into society that we need to be aware of. If we don't talk about it how will the public become aware of the possibilities?
We have been lucky to date that the prayers of depravity have been such bad showmen. I fear that will not last.
