Bozell Column: Yes, There Are Christmas Haters

By Brent Bozell | December 17, 2011 | 16:06

In this special season of giving, Hollywood is willing to give people what entertainment executives think the country needs: a vicious, bloody takedown of Christmas. The December 11 episode of  “American Dad” on Fox exemplified those with a complete absence of Christmas spirit in an episode titled “Season’s Beatings.”

Father Donovan announced he was running a Christmas play at the mall, so Stan Smith, the conservative Christian CIA agent/idiot dad expected to play Jesus Christ on the cross, since “I’m the most devout member of the church,” and “When it comes to Christianity, that’s the money shot.” Stan is told he’s too fat and is cast as Santa Claus. When he discovered the part of Jesus went instead to the show’s bisexual space alien character Roger, who boasted he’s working on his “savior bulge,” Stan beat Roger senseless.

Later, people watch the shocking TV news footage of “Santa” beating “Jesus.” A reporter says “Santa” used “anti-Jesus slurs” as he yelled “You don’t deserve to be on that cross, you lazy, wine-loving bisexual!” The Pope held the phone and said “Are you watching this [bleeped S-word]?” The priest complained to Stan that church leaders were “chewing my ass off.” Roger the space alien fondly remembered the beating as he watches and recounts how before he went unconscious, he was “finally able to achieve orgasm.”

Senseless violence was also added. As the episode began, Roger was perfecting his eggnog recipe. Here’s how he knew it was just right. He fed it to a rat in a cage, which then chewed off the head of another rat and then exploded in a pile of blood. Later in the episode, Stan shot a dog he thinks is a “hell hound.” Instead, it’s a guide dog for a blind man. The blind man then walked into traffic and was run over by a semi truck.

Some really sick people think these plot happenings are hilarious....in a Christmas-themed episode. So much for peace on earth and good will toward men. This twisted, bloody, and relentlessly religion-trashing episode was brought to you by a whole list of advertisers trying to sell things to children and teens: McDonald’s, Wrigley’s 5 gum, the Sony PlayStation, Apple’s iPad, the dancing hip-hop hamsters who sell the Kia Soul automobile, and the new family movie “We Bought a Zoo.” No one’s apparently concerned about the message this sends children at Christmas time.

Instead, too many spirit-crushing school bureaucrats are outraged that someone might say “Merry Christmas” in a classroom. The Batavia City School District in upstate New York explicitly instructed to employees that "Expressions related to specific religions, e.g., 'Merry Christmas,' should not be included in any spoken or written remarks."

Superintendent Margaret Puzio thought these well-wishes were an enormous distraction from education: “For me to stand up in front of the whole group and say, ‘Merry Christmas,’ is almost like the school district putting Christmas before everything else.”  How ridiculous! “Merry Christmas” is an expression of good will and kindness. It makes you wonder if school officials would take less offense at expressions of actual profanity.

In Mercer County, New Jersey, 16-year-old student Colin Curran complained on The Huffington Post that as he prepared a playlist for an annual "holiday" breakfast for young children, a school advisor stated the songs could not include the following words: Christmas, Chanukah, Jesus, God, or Santa Claus. “I questioned the logic behind these restrictions and was informed that since we live in an area with many different cultures, our principal does not want to offend anyone with belief-specific music.” School officials later claimed to Fox News the adviser was mistaken to be so restrictive.

Even in Fort Worth, Texas, the bureaucrats are “protecting” the children from Christmas cheer. School district attorney Bertha Bailey Whatley sent a message to staff explaining the children should not be allowed to exchange gifts or "distribute personal holiday messages" during class. "For example, if students are allowed to exchange cards or small trinkets, the district would be required to allow a student to distribute a religious message with the gift or card," the memo says.  How this is more offensive than the Christianity-trashing junk on TV is mind-boggling.

Millions of Americans love during the Christmas season to get a chance to sit down in front of the TV and watch classic specials like “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” which drew 9.1 million viewers this year for a show that premiered in 1965. No one tears their hair out when Linus reads out loud a story of angels bearing tidings of great joy of a savior born to the world. Forty-six years later, it’s still a hit with viewers – almost twice as many viewers than the black-hearted misanthropes watching “American Dad.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS, CHRIST IS BORN

Submitted by ohio granny on Sat, 12/17/2011 - 5:04pm.

We should say Merry Christmas. If someone is offended too bad. I am offended that in this country, founded on Judeo-Christian principles, it is okay to try to stifle any mention of Christ or Christianity.

I wish someone could tell me why it is okay to offend 90 - 95 percent of the country to maybe not offend the other 5 - 10 percent. The libs/dems/Muslims may not like it but this is still a CHRISTIAN country.

So I say MERRY CHRISTMAS and God bless this country.

More from the PC Police...

Submitted by Mary Louise Turner on Sat, 12/17/2011 - 5:07pm.

I read on Fox Nation that one town's school district decided to ban Christmas cookies from parties, not because of the word "Christmas" but because the cookies were considered junk food! Alternatives suggested by the school included raisins, popcorn and other "healthy" foods.  It's bad enough we have nanny state idiots banning the words "Hanukkah" and "Christmas" in our schools, but now the food police have joined in.  When will this insanity ever stop?

THIS is when my friend...

Submitted by stage9 on Sat, 12/17/2011 - 5:54pm.

Revelation 21:1-8
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers (overcomes) will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Trying to Destroy The Meaning Behind Christmas

Submitted by WhatTheHuh on Sat, 12/17/2011 - 6:48pm.

The secularists and atheists have gotten a foothold and every year these types of stories get worse. The first thing they want/need to do is remove all religious references from the season. That can be achieved by claiming it's "offensive" to say Merry Christmas, or that it violates the non-existent separation of church and state clause. Once the meaning is removed, they think it will be easier to get rid of Christmas all together because, they will claim, "It doesn't mean anything!" Personally, I am sick of these types. I truly believe 99% of our population is not offended by anyone saying, "Merry Christmas" or seeing a Nativity scene displayed. And if they are, who cares? I don't recall seeing anything in the Constitution about protecting people from not being offended. Outside of being offended, I don't see the problem with a holiday that promotes good will and kindness, and yes, some of the religion that goes along with it. These people are the worst. And by the way, I simply refuse to watch anything Seth McFarlane and his crew put out these days. He's a marginal talent who has made millions (as many have) scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Majority Rule - Minority Rights

Submitted by Pahlavan on Sat, 12/17/2011 - 6:51pm.

How far we have come from a basic tenet of our republic! The majority rules within the confines of the law. So, we can have a pledge of allegiance with the words "under God" in it. But Minority Rights affirms that any particular individual need not give the pledge.

Since we are (by population and culture) a Christian nation, we get to have Christian holidays - but we don't force anyone to celebrate them - in fact, they can disparage them - but you can't stop us from celebrating!

When I lived in predominantly Muslim countries (Iran and Saudi Arabia) the population celebrated Muslim holy days. However, no one claimed that an Iranian Muslim shouldn't greet another person with "Eid-a-shoma mobarak" - Happy Holiday of Eid just because the other might not celebrate the holy day recognized by everyone else.

Unfortunately, we have teachers who have majored in "Education" which basically means they have no education.

I'm starting to think Seth stole Brent's parking space...

Submitted by Coldsnap on Sat, 12/17/2011 - 7:47pm.

Folks, stop and look at yourselves. Getting all frothed up when a comic makes light of a belief.

We're all afraid of what's going to happen when our heart stops pumping. I'm happy that you feel more comfortable believing in religion and that it will make everything all 'kittens and rainbows' when you pass away. But like a drowning man clinging to that one piece of driftwood, you start swinging at anyone else who's coming near your current lifeline to safety.

Is your faith that weak that you can't simply swim the other way? Turn the flipping channel. If you're right in the end, who cares what Seth does/says anyhow? I know one of the tenants of religion is to get others to grab onto their own driftwood, making the driftwood the absolute 'thing' to have to be saved. The more who cling to the driftwood, the safer it must be, right? Anyone who says otherwise must be stopped!

Stop and look at yourself. Please. Life is too darn short to spend your energy on this. Hug your kid, kiss the wife and bring some happy into the world for crying out loud.

Dear Coldsnap,

Submitted by Tim Graham on Sat, 12/17/2011 - 8:18pm.

If our faith were weak, the first thing we would do is turn the channel and "swim the other way." This is the Christmas season, when millions of Americans prepare their hearts to celebrate the arrival of God in human flesh. You can choose not to believe it, but unbelief is much different than mockery. When our Lord is under attack, it is right and just that Christians identify it, warn against it, criticize it.

You really shouldn't suggest this is just "a comic" that has no cultural weight or influence. Fox and Seth MacFarlane are paving a road for atheism just as surely as the churches ready the way for Jesus.

Comedy dies when no one laughs

Submitted by Coldsnap on Sun, 12/18/2011 - 4:58am.

Not when someone who's opposed to certain topics tries to silence or change them. Yes, we get that you believe...what I fail to see the point of is giving Seth more weight by talking about his subject matter. Honestly, Seth's in here like two times a month. You're doing more to help promote his show by having 500,000 unique users see his show's pictures up every few weeks.

For the record, I really like all his shows and I'm a lapsed Catholic and current atheist. I know that word sets of a fight reflex here like seeing someone with a ski mask on reaching into his coat pocket, but you need to understand that the world is a super big place that has room for everyone to be what they want. You choose to devote your life to an ideal and so do I. What I don't do is turn on Hour of Power, listen to the commentary and then storm into sites saying 'we need to stop this!'...because I choose to let ideas form and die on their own without the need to resort to rallying the millions.

Just avoid the show, don't advertise it's 'filth' here. I come here because I want to see smaller government, less entitlements and the democrat ideas crushed under the weight of their own hypocrisy. Honestly, you just reminded me to check my recorded to make sure I captured the last show when I saw the picture...so thanks for that. I'm pretty sure if the Lord feels slighted by Seth's actions, he's got ways of dealing with it.

We were told this same thing forty years ago by Norman Lear and his minions, "Just change the channel". Now we are fighting for our lives and we will fight to the bitter end.If you want to be atheist or agnostic, so be it. If you don't like my religious beliefs, okay, but is there a need to make fun of it and trash it? How would you like it if we produced a show degrading gays? You'd be at the head of the crowd demanding our end. We don't hate or despise gays, we despise their lifestyle. However, we don't go around looking for an opportunity to trash them publicly. Why must we be treated this way?

I think this is Brent's bugaboo

Submitted by gopcongress on Sun, 12/18/2011 - 2:25am.

I am not against Family Guy nor American Dad, or shows of that nature, as long as they are directed toward adults. The key factor is that they are 1) adult, and 2) fictional. Of course, I DO have self-censorship issues with regard to making fuin of non-Judao-Christian religions, but I don't view comedy shows at such.

Keep in mind that shows about families and Christmas number in the dozens compared to the relatively few Family Guys, American Dad's, and Robot Chickens out there. But they are comedy, which means fictional. And there IS an off button or V-Chip that responsible parents control for the youngsters, and for the teens, there is something called "parenthood" that comes into play.

I am far, far, far more offended by the socialist, Democrat-sponsored legal edicts against Christmas and the traditional holidays, as well as the mandated acceptance of non-traditional holidays such as Earth Day and May Day. But to be blunt, I truly believe that there is far more fodder that can legitimately be criticized than shows directed toward adults.

Agreed

Submitted by Coldsnap on Mon, 12/19/2011 - 4:20am.

Hit the nail on the head. I welcome everyone to celebrate whatever they want, so long as it doesn't harm others.

To those who say they must 'fight' this...why? Who's is going to harm? Me personally I could care less who's an atheist and who's not. My folks are dyed-in-the-wool Catholics who go multiple times a week. My kid gets to pick whatever makes her feel happy at night. Me? I like Seth's work, even the cringe-worthy, because it's not another paint-by-numbers Brady Bunch episode.

Now, instead of rattling sabers at Seth and wishing for a big 'ban' button, put out material that will rightfully celebrate the true meaning of Christmas for those who believe like you do. Give them something else to watch. Seth's work isn't going away because too many of us enjoy it. Television/movies/internet/games are going to shape the next two generations into some of the most informed kids this planet has ever seen. And in the battle for their hearts and minds, you're going to need something a bit more modern than '10 Commandments' and 'Passion of the Christ' to compete folks.

You have to know too that each time Seth's name or work is mentioned that Google/Yahoo picks this up and rates his shows higher on the hit scale, yes? Companies pay money to inject their product names into sites trying to get more placement. This is the new Neilson Ratings. Which is why I keep trying to help you out a little bit by saying 'if you want Seth's work gone, stop helping him by bringing up his work here all the time.' This is a large site with a large following, which gives Seth a big uptick when his work is mentioned.

Unless of course if you secretly love his work, then please mention Family Guy, American Dad, Cleveland Show all day long.

...why it was a problem for anyone to hear me say "Merry Christmas." I mean, c'mon. Christmas is a day on the calandar. I look on it and it clearly says "Christmas Day" just like it says "New Years Day" on January 1st. So, even if you don't believe in the reason for the day, and even if you don't celebrate the day, you surely believe that the day itself (December 25th) exists! So, if I wish you a "Merry Christmas" and you happen to not believe in the reason for Christmas, I don't get why you don't just be happy that I am wishing you a happy day for December 25th, and maybe wish such a happy day for me also. If you want to wish a happy Ramadan, or any other day of the year, to me, i'm perfectly happy to know that you care enough about me to hope i avoid some misery.

Seth McFarlane has been on an anti-Christian, anti-morality, anti-conservative rant for years. It's just disgusting to see how low this man's TV shows will go to glorify filth in the name of "entertainment".

It is disturbing to think that there are people in this country who are parents that actually watch this stuff and allow their kids to watch it. Exposing kids to this kind of garbage is not healthy. And believe me, I know people who let their 10-12 year old kids watch this stuff.

McFarlane is one sick man. I hope to God he's not a parent.
