Bozell Column: Rewarding Rotten Ricky Gervais
The culture of Hollywood has just been beautifully defined by two awards-show decisions. The first one was Brett Ratner being dumped as the director of ABC’s Oscars telecast after he said “rehearsals are for fags.” It wasn’t long before Ratner turned himself in for “negotiations” with the gay Anti-Defamation cops about doing P.C. penance.
The second one, just days later, was the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC begging British comedian Ricky Gervais to host the Golden Globe Awards again – after he mercilessly insulted nearly everyone in Hollywood and ended last year’s program with a long list of thank yous, ending with “And thank you to God – for making me an atheist.”
Put the God-bashing aside for a moment. Gervais wasn’t doing winking “just kidding” jokes akin to Don Rickles that night. They weren’t even jokes. They were insults and they were brutal. Most memorable was mocking actor Robert Downey, Jr., who successfully overcame addiction after many years of failed rehabilitations, by listing some of his films and then adding "But many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail."
Downey later came on stage and smacked back. "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show has been pretty good so far, wouldn't you?" Presenters Tom Hanks and Tim Allen also criticized Gervais on the show. Hanks declared, "We recall when Ricky Gervais was a slightly chubby but very kind comedian," and Allen added "Neither of which he is now."
But some people in Hollywood are enraptured by comic decadence. In The Hollywood Reporter, Scott Feinberg celebrated another jumbo platter of Gervais wickedness: “What made Gervais so funny as a host and helped him to deliver great ratings for NBC over the past two
years is just that: his willingness to say what everyone is already thinking but nobody else will dare say.”
When Feinberg says “everyone” is thinking just like Gervais, he’s not talking about America (starting with the God-is-a-cruel-fiction part). He means Hollywood. It’s in the 90210 zip code where apparently everyone likes to stab everyone else behind his back, where character assassination comes naturally as a price of doing business, and if you score, you’re a sensation.
The vaunted return of Gervais is just another living landmark of how the entertainment industry has put civility through the shredder and embraced mean-spiritedness with gusto. You see it everywhere. The typical hit sitcom now has gone from being centered on a lovable character like Bill Cosby or Mary Tyler Moore to a focus on a hopelessly debauched Charlie Sheen. Just look at the decline and fall of the kind-hearted celebrity roast. What Dean Martin offered was hilarity and class. Today? Comedy Central doesn’t so much “roast” a celebrity. It drops them into a deep fryer.
It would be easy for critics of Hollywood’s perversity to enjoy the notion of Hollywood eating itself on live television. It’s also easy to imagine that there’s an enormous amount of false flattery and pretension in Hollywood that would seem fun to skewer. But hosts like Gervais teach that verbal cruelty is the path to fame and fortune. Step on everyone else’s hands as you climb the ladder.
It’s the car-wreck formula: NBC is banking on everyone tuning in to see who will get verbally abused. Gervais hit Twitter and warned Billy Crystal "He'd better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material" on the Oscar broadcast. He also tweeted “Ha ha hello. Welcome to my world” accompanied by a picture of him lighting a cigar in front of a wall of flames.
There’s no danger in being an atheist in Hollywood. It’s an honor. But let’s not award Gervais points for sincerity. In the last year, Gervais has sermonized in print about his atheism at both Christmas and Easter. In each, he claimed he stood...for kindness. At Christmas he wrote, “[T]hat’s where spirituality lost its way. When it became a stick to beat people with. ‘Do this or you’ll burn in hell.’”Then he proclaimed: “You won’t burn in hell. But be nice anyway.”
Then at Easter, he concluded, “God or not, if I could change one thing for a better world, it would be for all mankind to adhere to this little gem: ‘Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.’ I assure you, no more stones would ever be thrown.”
Don’t bet on Gervais playing nice and putting his bucket of rocks down. NBC is paying him for the privilege of casting the first stone, and many more.

Sin is a God-made concept, Ricky. You don't get to quote someone you believe doesn't exist.

Sarah Palin

Very amusing. One thing you can't accuse Sarah Palin of is not being able to take it. Her treatment by the liberal press was brutal. If Michelle Obama had been treated that way you can bet the very thin-skinned liberals would be demanding firings. When Bush was repeatedly picketed at his appearances by the mother of a soldier who was slain, he told the press that this was America and she has a right to do what she was doing. ANYTHING said against a liberal is met with outrage. You can call a Conservative woman a bimbo, a twat, a whore and it's all okay with the liberals (this is the party that respects women???). Mention that a liberal woman has cankles and the libs go wild. Hypocrites. You took down Herman Cain because of sexual harassment yet you idolize Bill Clinton who was accused of rape, NUMEROUS accounts of more than sexual harassment, and one affair after another. On top of all of that, he was a liar. If it weren't for the tape and DNA evidence he would still be saying it never happened. You guys are a bunch of school yard bullies that whine and cry when someone gives it back to you. Such hypocrisy! Sarah Palin takes it like a man. You knock her down and she gets right back up.
By the way, I'm confidant that Sarah Palin knows how many states we have (as opposed to President Obama's "57 or 58"). I'm sure it was just a funny gaffe like when he mispronounced corpsman three times in the same speech. Yet, the media didn't touch it. Check out on You Tube "Obama's Many Gaffes #1", number # 2, and "Idiots who voted for Obama". (Where they attribute really stupid quotes to Palin or McCain but the quotes were actually from Obama or Biden.) The point is, all of these people are human. The problem is you are merciless if the person is a person who believes in God or is a Conservative. You give the liberals a wide open pass. Or could it be your news doesn't tell you about all the Obama or democrat gaffes? Heaven forbid they tell the truth about the anointed one and you find out, gasp! he's HUMAN. No brighter than the rest of them. No dumber.

It seems to me that Blonde's comment lends credence to the stereotypical joke that people often use to make fun of those with lighter shades of hair.
If Ricky is correct and there is no God, and we are all just products of an undirected natural cause known as macro-evolution, then what possible reason would one have for being nice or good as Ricky recommends? Niceness and goodness do not aid in the survival of the fittest, they only make people weak and susceptible to being overcome by the strong. If there are no eternal rewards or punishments then why not act like Ricky Gerivais and poke the pompous and deride the goofy. Hate is just as useful as love in Ricky's philosophical world.

I wrote this about an hour ago but was delayed in posting due to a phone call. I see Blonde has already responded but I will still post this as I think you've been unjust in your critique of Blonde.
---------
You've been a member for over 3 years and should by now understand Blonde is not stereotypical anything, especially concerning ignorance or shallowness. Your point is a good one about the Godless being good for goodness sake. Blonde's comment was from a different perspective, IMO one of just desserts.
I don't know your motivation for the cut taken at Blonde, and this being your first and only thread you've commented on in your tracking history complicates the matter, but you were way off base about Blonde. Had you not gone after Blonde in such a manner then you would not have appeared to suffer a weakness you claim of Gervais, and your point about goodness would have been more effective.

I like reading the smaller science journals because that's where the best minds are, not at the big institutions who are mainly group thinkers. Remember Einstein worked on his own and was never accepted by the science community at large until later in his life. The notion of one physical universe created randomly by a big bang is on the way out. Many physicists now are coming to the idea of parallel universes and multi-dimensions and the math supports it. Evolution will probably discarded in the future as well since there is no record of in-between life forms in the fossil record and the math says there should be so many we would almost trip over them. True science requires evidence but lefties and Hollywood don't, they simply echo talking points of the time. Ricky is not a good source for science or spirituality, he's just an example of limited thinking.
Ricky Gervais seems to be
Submitted by Liberallies on Sat, 11/26/2011 - 12:16pm.
Ricky Gervais seems to be quite confused. I read his article and I "like" how he defines the 10 Commandments so they fit into his personal beliefs. I also find his last line to be such a lie, that he treats all religions equally, really? No doubt he will soon write an article attacking Islam and the Koran, right? Can anyone point me to his public attacks against Islam? Judaism? Anyone...Buller? The guy is the typical, run of the mill Christianphobe. Not surprised since he comes from Hollywood. If there is an article out there that he wrote attacking Islam, by all means link it here. Maybe so jokes at the expense of Islam and Muslims? He did say he treats all religions equally, so I know he must have gone after Islam with the same ignorance that he went after Christianity.
One thing that I have discovered about the anti-Christians is that they are 1) Ignorant and I mean this not as an insult, but as truly lacking an education in any type of theology. 2) Cowards. Quick to attack Christianity, but when called on their anti-Christianity hate, they quickly hide behind the, "I treat all religions equally!", but they can't show any public attack they have made against Islam.

Lately, Mr Bozell, you seem to have trended over into being a self-righteous scold--everyone must toe the Christian mark, be "straight," etc. But let someone like Whoopi call someone a bonehead--oh, no, that is OUT! Why don't we look at what the press DOES, which is skewed enough, instead of fretting over your desires for what they SHOULD do and be. Just an idea.
Another Idea
Submitted by Kleenex on Sat, 11/26/2011 - 1:49pm.
Here's another idea, by definition Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ. He wasn't really born on that day but the catholic church chose it because the Yule festival could be merged with it to absorb non believers. The whole purpose is to simply remember that an unblemished, sinless savior was brought into our world to pay the price instead of us, the rest is all window dressing. As far as defending Whoopi goes, she can say as many stupid things as she wants (and does on a daily basis). He's simply pointing out what she said but I guess you don't want to hear it.

Hollywood is often 2-faced thanks to political correctness that they feel they must adhere to, despite their dark hearts desire to smear anything vulnerable. But add the likes of Ricky Gervais who is so Britishly blunt, you probably get some ppl thinking that he's saying what must be said---and when it comes to exposing the 2-facedness of Hollywood, I agree w/them. It's just when he too, amps it up to offend the vulnerable, that he becomes as bad as anyone, if not worse.

Hollywood Will Have to Pretend to Like Gervais For 1 more night.
Submitted by WhatTheHuh on Sat, 11/26/2011 - 7:57pm.
This story just cracks me up. The Hollywood elite, skewered by Gervais, certainly didn't want him back and the general consensus was that he went overboard in his attacks. So why is he coming back? Because the Globes wants ratings, and this will get them! Celebrities need the exposure as well because the GG nominations sometimes translate to Oscar nods. So instead of protesting RG's return, maybe even boycotting the event, celebrities will attend and hope they are not the butt of his jokes (that's integrity for you). And the attacks will flow. If people think Gervais is going to hold back and look like a tool of the Globes, they are sadly mistaken. And what a predicament for the Golden Globes: wanting Gervais to attack while at the same time hoping he doesn't say anything that will offend the celebrities that, with a simple boycott, can make this fake organization irrelevant.
