Bozell Column: Pageants and 'Prosti-tots'

By Brent Bozell | September 17, 2011 | 08:08

Brent Bozell's picture

People who love reality television often have a special attraction to “train wreck” shows. For two years now, the tasteless titans of the cable channel TLC have been exploiting the spectacle of hyper-ambitious stage mothers parading around “beauty queens” just barely out of diapers in thousand-dollar gowns. The program is titled “Toddlers & Tiaras.” But now it’s even worse: they’re dressing up little girls as what radio hosts are calling “prosti-tots.”

TLC aired an episode with a three-year-old pageant contestant named Paisley ridiculously dressed as the Julia Roberts prostitute character in the 1990 film “Pretty Woman” – complete with skimpy tank top, tight skirt, thigh-high boots, and a blond wig. Did I mention this little girl is three years old? It makes you wonder if TLC’s new slogan shouldn’t be “TV for Pedophiles.”

On ABC’s daytime talk show “The View,” co-host Sherri Shepherd was outraged. “If you think pedophiles are not watching this show, I`ve got a bridge I want to sell you.” Even other reality TV stars like the Kardashians were proclaiming TLC has gone too far.

This scandal came just one week after TLC was forced to pull its Facebook page because of the deluge of negative comments over an episode that featured a little girl named Maddy dressed up to look like Dolly Parton, complete with wig and fake breasts and buttocks. The little girl stuck out her altered rear end and bounced around like a street walker. Maddy’s personal stylist did not like the “adult enhancements,” but he was overruled by the little girl’s mother, making you wonder why some social service worker somewhere wasn’t contacted.

One Facebook commenter complained, "People will do anything to be on reality TV. Perhaps it’s time for these producers to think about the impact of what they are encouraging." The only impact these cable programmers care about is the ka-ching.

It’s quite possible if these kinds of videos and photographs were found on the computer of a 40-year-old man, he might well be arrested or investigated for child pornography. But TLC is spreading these images far and wide, with no consequences – and no apparent shame.

Some might think the whole country would be sick of the whole notion of beauty pageants for little children after the relentless news coverage in the late 1990s of the never-resolved murder of six-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey. But that kind of notoriety only makes the TLCs of the world more confident they have something questionable enough to spotlight.

This notorious show may have pushed the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to suspend the day-care license of Jeanie Alcalar, with sudden accusations she was feeding tots spoons of hot sauce as punishment. It came shortly after she was shown on “Tiaras” yanking her five-year-old daughter off the floor as the girl cried that she did not want her hair done. The department claimed the suspension had nothing to do with the show, but Alcalar faced death threats after the show aired.

What did TLC have to say for itself after the latest “prosti-tot” incident? Did the network try to say “all in good fun” or bleat about “artistic license”? It simply said “No comment.” This has a strong odor of “The public be damned.”

Paisley’s mother, Wendy Dickey, claimed it was part of a hilarious “skit,”and later, Paisley was dressed as the “reformed” Julia Roberts character. “I was very surprised and I'm just blown away that it has gotten this far. But there were no problems at the pageant. Everyone who seen the full skit got it. What I was trying to do -- and it was not about sexualizing my little girl.”

In fact, Paisley won the pageant and was applauded by the crowd for the hooker getup. At the pageant, there was only affirmation and awards for tarting up the toddlers. The same result came for little “Dolly Parton” – she won a pile of awards from judges: 'Best Fashion', 'Best Hair', 'Photogenic' and 'Sweetest Face'.

There apparently wasn’t a “Hottest T&A” ribbon.

Mrs. Dickey also strangely claimed that the three-year-old hooker idea wasn’t as offensive as a ten-year-old hooker. “She’s three. If she was 10, I never would have considered this. But as young as she is, I thought it was very comical." She felt compelled to add “It was the cutest thing ever. It was very innocent.”

The toddler is innocent, but the getup was not. It’s because of that child’s innocence that this is so offensive. For the mother to deny that makes her delusional.

Submitted by motherbelt on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 8:36am.

Saw this column yesterday at Townhall.com and as usual, you nailed it, Mr. B!!

Only an idiot could dress her daughter up as a hooker and then claim with a straight face that it was very innocent and  it was not about sexualizing my little girl.”

This is shameful child abuse.  These little girls have ZERO choice about parading as their moron mothers tell them to.  They think it's all a game of "dress-up" until time comes when they don't want to play that particular day and the mothers pitch a fit and threaten.

BTW, where are the FATHERS of these little girls? Are there really MEN in this country who don't mind seeing their daughters tarted up????

I think it would be interesting to find out how many of these girls live with "single mothers."

Because I can't imagine a father allowing this.

Sadly, I think there are far

Submitted by Rasmus on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 4:43pm.

Sadly, I think there are far too many judges today who would disagree with you, and award custody to the mother. Maybe that's why some of these fathers tolerate this stuff... but it's not a valid excuse, and doesn't excuse them from their actions in allowing their daughters to be raised in such a horrible fashion. This is disgusting behavior by the parents as well as everyone else involved in these "pageants." I would be surprised to learn their biggest patrons aren't pedophiles. Who else would enjoy this?

I agree, motherbelt

Submitted by Galvanic on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 2:16pm.

This is a socially and personally destructive industry that exploits powerless little girls and their mentally-disturbed mothers. The entire enterprise is sick and dangerous.

1. THE PAGEANT OPERATORS & SPONSORS: I'm suspicious of any adult -- male or female -- who runs or judges a contest that ranks little children on their abiity to simulate the look and behavior of adult celebrities. Profit is not enough of a motivator to overcome the moral instinct in most human beings to say, "No, this is wrong." Most are probably active or passive pedophiles.

2. THE MOTHERS. Like you, I suspect that the majority are single moms with low self-esteem. They either see their daughters as potential cash cows, or they are living a fantasy through these children. The term "bad mother" is not negative enough to describe these monsters.

3. THE FATHERS. Where there are fathers present, I suspect that their characters are too weak to challenge the wil of the pageant mom. One I saw on TLC -- and Air Force member -- was serving like an assistant coach, helping with costumes. These bastards are just as guilty.

4. GRANDMOTHERS. Often, the mother is assisted by her mother. The grandmothers who go along with this are just as guilty.

5. TLC. They are exploiting these children, too. The show does highlight negative aspects of this industry -- heartbreak after losing; contestants rebelling against their demanding mothers, etc. -- but I think the point that the show caters to pedophiles can't be dismissed out of hand.

6. THE CHILDREN. What will become of these victims? Have there been any psychological studies of these girls when they reach adulthood? I can't imaging any but a handful being well-adjusted.

The sexualization of little children is a product of a society which for decades has been drifting away from morality, transiting through amorality (We're told that morality is relative), and now sinking in immorality.

Child Abuse for the sake of "Entertainment"

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 8:35am.

Just sickening… and a hell of a story to wake-up to on a Saturday morning. It’s about time all these “pageant organizers” get slapped with a “sex offender” label… they are the true perverts here. The parents are fully deserving of the “pervert enabler” label.

I am sick to my stomach just thinking about what these “parents” are doing to their own children.

You up at 6:30? If you were here it would be a good day to sleep in. Rainy and cool (60s) makes for a good day in bed.

I saw this the other week when they showed this little girl dress like Dolly Parton. Big kabungas, hair and hiney. I told my wife this stuff just turned on pedophiles. She didn't think so. I've told my wife that I better not see our 4 year old granddaughter dressed like.

We've already got a 12 year grandaughter who thinks she is 19 by the looks of her facebook page. I keep telling her and her stooopid mama she is asking for trouble. (Her stoopid mama is my son's soon to be ex.) I won't go into the reason I think she is stooopid.

Good morning Rick!

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 9:21am.

“When you down the first cold one of the day just remember me here in NC …”

Based on Mr. B’s article, that first “cold one” may be my breakfast. Just thinking about what those parents are doing to their children really makes me angry and causes me to lose any sense of an appetite… I’d honestly like to tie those “producers and executive” who promote this filth to an anthill.

We had a big Thunderstorm here earlier in the week and the temps dropped all the way from about 104 down to 98…brrr! Actually, one day it did get down to 78 or so and it did actually feel cold! The rest of the week has been just beautiful.

BTW, Arizona is not on “Mountain Time” as we refuse to acknowledge the existence of “Daylight Savings Time” and our clocks do not get reset simply for the aggrandizement of some petty bureaucrats in D.C. – So it was 5:30 here when I originally replied. On the other hand… I’ve been normally getting-up between 3:30 and 4:30 for the last 40 years so I’m kind of set in my ways now.

May not be around too much today… just found out last night my rental agent found a renter for my other unit who wants to move-in on Monday so I have to do the spackle and paint thing this weekend. Have a great relaxing day!

Don't work too hard. My son

Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 9:55am.

Don't work too hard. My son and his wife bought a mobile home after their house was flooded. They can't put it on their current property without elevating it 6 feet. They told my son it would cost upwards of $10,000 dollars to elevate it. It has to be set on block piers with rebar put in the blocks and then filled with concrete. Since it was a second hand trailer they are busy making repairs. I know what you mean about spackling and painting. Me, I ain't no painter.

... don't have to because the last renters left the place in great condition. Just have to paint one small wall where they had one of those wall-mounted TV's and patch-up some very small nail holes for pictures.

Anyway, I've got about 90 minutes to go before I call the rental agent to get some advice about what I should do (and to get more details about the prospective renter).

I have a few patients who were or are involved in these.

Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 10:00am.

Those who are mothers and fathers of these kids talk about how bad their lives were and how they want to see their kids participate in these pageants for fame and fortune. In other words, the parents live vicariously through the children. The adults who were children in these pageants feel used and pressured with unrealistic expectations from their parents and they go through cycles of depression, resentment and hatred towards their parents. The result is a bizarre combination of deluded parents and depressed kids.

As to the pedophilia element that is present in these pageants, I have heard first-hand accounts from parents and grown contestants of male and female pedophiles using some very devious approaches to getting at these children. I find the whole thing not only disgusting but also distressing. It only takes experience treating one victim of child molestation coming from the child pageant industry to decide the whole rotten mess should be abolished.

Always enjoy your posts.

In my experience, it’s not just the “kids-contests” that are creepy… the “adult ones” are pretty sleazy as well. I was once assigned to the “honor guard” at one of these adult pageants. The girls were downright gorgeous but the contest owner was a very rich, shriveled-up elderly guy in a wheelchair and he just delighted in having these 18-20 year old girls fawn all over him at every opportunity. The girls did the fawning because they knew that the owner had the power to decide which of them would win the contest. It was actually repulsive to watch those girls having to prentend they really liked that creep. On the whole, the audience was pretty disgusting as well.

It was an experience that fortunately I never had to repeat – and one that shaped my view on how I look at all these types of contests.

As you know, you and I have discussed the "incremental steps" that the pleasure seeking narcissists in our society have done to destroy boundaries in our society. This is just one of those steps.

Having worked with victims of child sexual abuse and their parents for 3 decades, the one thing I observed is that people will always find a way to justify their self serving actions even at the cost of life long damage to those children.

The murder of innocent unborn children is a "right", a "choice" the normalization of "sexualized" toddlers is right out of NAMBLA's playbook for "grooming", the re-education of our elementary school children about their choices for sexual identity and sexual "activities", are all signs of an era designed to redefine "normal" in our society in order to create an emotionally detached society that will then close their eyes when the chaos begins. This is called, "the transformation of America".

When I see activities such as this, I take it very personal. It diminishes all my education, training, and decades long professional career of protecting our most vulnerable of our society, our children. People need to be aware of the harm being done to our society by these "incremental steps" and begin fighting back.

And Drsam, as always, your critiques on these subjects are greatly appreciated and keeps me from going on a pages long rant....;-)

Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 1:59pm.

To add some dimensions to my first post, I see a few other things about kiddie and adult pageants that are concerning.

I have too many examples, as does clinical literature, of young girls and women who develop eating disorders and substance addictions due to the demands of staying very thin. In many cases where boys and young men are involved, they similarly develop eating disorders and substance addictions. The problem is hardly limited just to females, though the epidemiology is slanted towards them greatly. Substance disorders are tough enough to treat, but add in multiple comorbidities like concomitant mood disorders (depression, eating/food disorders) and the constant pressure to be "on" even when the child is nowhere near a stage or studio, and you end up a psychiatric mess. Many times the child might want to go along with the parent's plans because the child likes competition, being dressed up, performing, etc., but many also face parents that will not allow them to stop.

Another issue I see coming especially from the kiddie pageants is the instillation of superficiality and shallow values on these kids. I hear many parents claim that these events strengthen their kids for real life. When I ask how much of real life exists in a moderately priced chain hotel near an interstate highway on a long weekend hearing your mother or father browbeat you into smiling when you don't want to smile, or sing what you don't want to sing and wearing age-inappropriate costumes and cosmetics, the "parents" suddenly have no explanation for how this would benefit the child.

There are several elements of exploitation beyond the probability of pediphilia at these kiddie pageants. Two areas of major concern to me as a psychiatrist are the feelings of entitlement that pageant children have and the resentment that not winning might generate. The other is the obsessions developed in the parents to spend money they may or may not have on all of the accoutrement required for these. These events have collectively become a large industry based on exploitation of children and young adults based on unrealistic expectations of "parents". I find it very troubling that adults would allow children to be exploited and then to live vicariously through them. Not only do some of these adults feel entitled to do this, but they also project these aspirations onto the kids. It is smarmy.

j/k ~ It's one of my favorite words (I love words!).

That anyone could attempt to justify this merely demonstrates how easily people these days can rationalize bad behavior.

When we were kids, my little sister did a bit of modelling when she was about 5. She did a couple of catalogs and one TV commercial. After her 3rd or 4th gig, my mom got fed up with it. Forty years later she will still rant and rave about the "stage mothers".

TLC apparently wasn't so

Submitted by FoolishCop on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 10:27am.

TLC apparently wasn't so chagrined about the Maddy/Dolly blowup that it would pull the clip from its online marketing of the "Toddlers & Tiaras" show.

http://tlc.discovery.com/videos/toddlers-tiaras-doing-dolly-parton.html

As the promo for the segment still states, "Pageant contestant Maddy has a secret weapon: an outrageous Dolly Parton costume complete with fake boobs and all!"

It was always a bizarre show from the get-go, but this seems to be a case of wanting to push the envelope of taste, ethics, and good sense to its limits.

I used to watch TLCs home remodeling shows, house hunting programs, etc. But suddenly, it seemed as if every decorator, every couple, every aspect of housing was gay. Being a part of the programming was fine, but when it became a preponderance of the shows being shown, when the gay aspect of the programming seemed to be what was driving it, then it became too much. It was more they had an agenda they were pushing than an entertainment medium for the masses. As a result, I simply don't watch TLC anymore.

that have occurred recently - how long ago was it that folks thought that Jerry Springer was a bad influence on everyone - especially the folks who watched his show? Now, "reality" shows are nothing then better repackaged and more slick versions of Jerry - look at the demographics of viewers and look at the erosion from the 'standard' shows of the networks - ooops, just created a governmental grant opportunity "Migration of TV viwers from network to cable 'programs'"

Where is michelle ? Why isn't

Submitted by LAM SON 719 on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 11:00am.

Where is michelle ? Why isn't she protesting this outrageous endangerment to children. Where is the " think of the children crowd". No doubt they are all watching this garbage and getting aroused.

Non, je ne regrette rien. "You aren't angry because I might be a racist, you're angry because you know I'm right".

And they wonder why so many women & children get kidnaped, raped & killed. This show should be in the catagory of child porn.

I don't even have children

Submitted by Scarlet on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 11:46am.

I don't even have children and the thought of dressing up a three year old or a six year old as a hooker makes my stomach turn. How can these mothers think this is ok? Is any amount of fame or money worth sacrificing your child's innocence? This is really sickening.

I have 4 kids

Submitted by Rukus on Sat, 09/17/2011 - 12:09pm.

I thank God every day they grew up ok. None of this nonsense. The oldest is a Navy man and will prolly stay that way. My 2nd was (still is) a Marine, he turned out great, smart as hell. My 3rd graduated from college with a degree in music (church music to be exact) and my youngest will graduate next year in buisness. I'm a proud dad and am glad my kids didn't have to deal with this shiiite. Thank you Lord!
K, sorry for the bragging, I'll move on now...

I've bragged on my kids many times. Raise your kids with Christian values and they will do good, believe me, been there, done that, and they turned out great.

Why isn't the NOW jumping all over this stuff? Seems like this should be right down their alley...

Maybe because there's no conservative they can attack over it?

"Even other reality TV stars like the Kardashians were proclaiming TLC has gone too far."
This sentence is a hoot considering Kim Kardashian gained fame through her graphic, filthy sex tape. This woman even puts sex to shame. Reality TV has gone too far in my opinion - Snooki, Kendra,Holly, Kardashians, housewives - all trashy shows featuring trashy people.

(Sur)Reality Television

Submitted by ljacone on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 11:12am.

I don't watch this show, but I do see commercials for it and see articles like this one. I am just baffled by the folks who clamor for this "train wreck" television which is advertised as "reality." How is this entertaining? What possible pleasure can be derived from seeing a toddler dressed up like a hooker or seeing her insane mother frothing at the mouth?

The truly inane thing to me personally is that the fans of this sort of trash -- namely, leftists -- are the first ones to decry boxing, MMA, and other combat sports, calling them "barbaric." This despite the very strict rules and regulations as well as the sanctioning bodies governing them. And yet this God forsaken trash is considered mainstream?

To the folks who watch shows like this, or the Housewife shows, or Jersey Shore, or whatnot -- Please, please, please get a life. (Thanks to "Animaniacs" for that bit.)
