Bozell Column: Fear and Loathing of Bachmann
In the last election cycle, we heard a lot of complaining about the sexist treatment accorded to Hillary Clinton as she campaigned for president. One magazine wrote, “It’s her resilience and capacity to survive and thrive against all comers that partly fuels the haters’ fury.” They even wrote “The anti-Hillary industry has never managed to bring down Hillary herself — in fact, the more they have attacked, the higher she has risen.”
That would be Newsweek magazine, in the June 18, 2007 issue. Four years later, Newsweek was mocking Republican candidate Michele Bachmann on its cover, making her look pale and confused and, well, nutty – with the headline “The Queen of Rage.” Physician, heal thyself. Now the term “hater’s fury” aptly describes the very same “news” magazine that so pompously lectures us about civility every time one of their favorites is in the political crosshairs.
It’s impossible to imagine the “objective” news rags picturing Hillary with crazy eyes and a headline like “Queen of Rage.” Newsweek titled their 2007 article “The New War on Hillary.” There is a War on Michele developing, and it’s being waged by the left-wing press. They won’t stop until they achieve their goal of grinding her presidential hopes – if not her entire political career – into a fine powder. They despise this woman.
On MSNBC, Joe Scarborough was typical: “Michele Bachmann is a joke...Her candidacy is a joke.” Joe has favored the sleep-walking Jon Huntsman because “He can speak in complete sentences. One sentence actually relates to the previous sentence.” Huntsman only got beat in the straw poll by Bachmann by, ahem...4,823 to 69, or a ratio of about 70 to 1. So who is the joke?
On NBC, former CNBC host Donny Deutsch defended Newsweek’s right to mock Bachmann as a cartoon without care for accuracy and honesty: “Why can't they make a statement? Obviously that was a real picture, and they didn't air touch her. It's not a flattering article. By the way, why can't you write an unflattering, biased article?”
Deutsch wasn’t kidding about the nastiness of the article. Newsweek’s Lois Romano threw acid at Bachmann about her dangerous “shtick” of “intransigence.” Here’s a typical, sneering sentence: “For now, Bachmann revels in the Iowa crowds, which don't fuss about the missing fine print behind her ideas, the perceived contradictions among them, or their radicalism.”
Newsweek claims to loathe contradictions – as they write long, nasty editorials and then claim like complete hypocrites that they’re publishing a “news” product.
There are at least three reasons for the media’s everlasting enmity. The first is Bachmann’s staunch and vocal conservatism on TV. She has become the most identifiable member of Congress aligned with the Tea Party, which to the liberal media is a cancer on our politics
that must be removed like a tumor. Bachmann’s opposition to Obama and his radical agenda was red-hot before the Tea Party “rage” was born.
The second is Bachmann’s deeply-held religious faith. She’s an evangelical conservative who doesn’t hesitate from a fight on cultural issues like abortion and “gay marriage.” Our secular press corps seriously despises people who dare to assert that America is great in part because America has been and is inspired by Judeo-Christian values. Their ideal of a “devout Christian” is Barack Obama, who devoutly spends most Sundays golfing.
Third is Bachmann’s gender – but that’s closely associated with the first two. If you’re a liberal woman, the media will celebrate your presidential run as shattering a glass ceiling. But as we just learned with Sarah Palin, a conservative woman on a national ticket is going to get nothing but a carpet-bombing from the powers that be in “compassionate” journalism.
(The same narrative applies to conservative blacks. Just ask Clarence Thomas.)
There are many Republicans infatuated with the idea of countering Obama in 2012 with female or minority conservatives, be it on the presidential and/or vice presidential ticket. But it’s quite obvious that the media – especially liberal females and minorities in the media – loathe the very thought, regardless of the person. They don’t want to give up their “making history” template for two seconds.
Five months ago, new Newsweek boss Tina Brown’s first cover championed Hillary Clinton and “How she’s shattering glass ceilings everywhere.” Brown doesn’t really want conservative women to shatter that metaphorical ceiling first. After a run of victories by conservative female candidates in the 2010 GOP primaries, Brown went on ABC and with a straight face called the wins "a blow to feminism."
And she calls Michele Bachmann the Queen of Rage.

The obvious truth is Democrats are afraid of losing the women vote and want to protect their male candidates from being pushed out by Conservative women. But there's something else to consider, Democrats want bragging rights over having the first African-American and woman as President.
It's Obama's recent photos that look crazy
Submitted by Slyrr on Tue, 08/16/2011 - 11:50pm.
I don't think Bachmann's picture is crazy looking. They tried to make it so, but didn't really pull it off. It just looks like they sprang out from a closet and took a snapshot when she blinked at them.
Who REALLY looks crazy in all his recent photos is Obama. When he was riding on top of a wave of media brown tongues, he looked gleeful, with a perpetual grin/smirk on his face. But every photo I see of him lately is very different. He almost always has a tight-lipped, sour expression, and if he'd been force-fed dill pickles and lemons. Or like he's trying to eat both of his own lips. And he's got a knitted brow, slitted eyes and clenched fists. It's like he's constantly fighting back an urge to leap on the media with a snarl and start waling on them. Either that, or it looks like he's always about to drop a big, steaming load in his pants (just before David Brooks expresses his lust for said pants, and Matthews gets thrills up his own pants).

Chris Wallace asking Congresswomen and Republican Presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann if she was a "flake"?
Although I watch and support Fox News, even Fox News employs Lefties like Wallace, who will disparage Conservative women. Another example of Democrat Chris Wallace's bias toward women on the right was the interview he had prior to the 2010 elections with Carly Fiorina, the Republican nominee for the United States Senate representing California. Fiorina's opponent was extreme left wacho Senator Barbara ("Don't Call Me Ma'am") Boxer.
Keep in mind before you watch the video, that Boxer had refused to appear on Wallace's Fox News Sunday. Fiorina knew, as well as those of us who supported her, that Boxer was looking for any ammunition to use against Fiorina. Now watch the VIDEO. I contend that Wallace did more than interview Carly Fiorina. He badgered and treated her no differently than Chris Matthews, David Gregory, or (insert Leftist media name) would have. Chris Wallace was a hero to the Left after that interview. I have no doubt that after Wallace spewed out the "flake' question to Michelle Bachmann, Wallace received loving praise from the Left.

In fact, when it comes to stupidity we are so far ahead of the rest of the Country we are the forerunners of the people depicted in the movie "Idiocracy" which explains how we ended up with Barbara Boxer as our U.S. Senator.

For a woman that nearly ran HP into the ground she's got a lot of nerve dispensing business advice. Her tenure as CEO was an unmitigated disaster, yet she picked up a sweet golden parachute. I used to be heavily involved with ABC at a previous job years ago. Great organization and they really fight the good fight. The artificial inflation of job bids by construction unions is nothing short of criminal. I can see why we started unions, but they've long over stayed their welcome.
I used to live in a large city and I would routinely see union thugs protesting in front of shops that used open shop labor instead of union. I used to always tell them the same thing..."You mean the owner didn't want to pay 300% more for the same work? Strange!"

And therein lies my point. Were labor costs reasonable in America, we wouldn't have shipped the entire electronics industry to Asia decades ago. How, otherwise, is it possible to invent, research and develop, and even perfect electronics in this country but be more profitable to build and ship them from Asia if not for the fact that union labor -which would surely be a staple in the electronics industry- makes it untenable?
Don't blame Carly Fiorino for shipping jobs overseas, blame those who require so much pay and benefits for an assembly line job that they've priced themselves out of the market. And blame those who place so much tax burden on companies who operate on our shores that it's less expensive to run full-scale operations in another country. What sense does it make for a business executive in charge of the successful operation and growth of the her business to make a conscious decision to stifle that business by paying excessive taxes and unprofitable labor costs? None, is the answer.

bkeyser, all great points and I don't disagree with you overall, however, labor costs alone do not even come close to excusing Fiorina's behavior. Just look at the facts surrounding her tenure. HP stock dropped 525% (rose 6.9% when her firing was announced). While she was "cutting back" on jobs, she collected over $106 million in compensation and had HP spend millions to buy 5 private jets to fly her around the world. She took $69 million in compensation in her first year! Also, it's important to keep in mind that the layoffs weren't just low-skill, assembly line jobs. She axed jobs from all sectors in HP.

Rush, the facts are correct and, while I agree with you that Boxer is hands down the worst Senator currently serving (how did she even get into office?), I'm just can't believe that Fiorina was the best option. Considering the size of California, I have to believe there was somebody that was smarter and possessed a better resume. I would love to see Boxer pound the pavement, but I don't think I'd want to her replaced by a person like Fiorina who is just more of the same garbage we've had to deal with for the past 20 years.
We need to boot the politicians and get some real people in office with track records of success. you called Carly Fiorina an idiot. But after reading your replies to me and others on this thread, you seem to me to be quite reasonable. Welcome to NewsBusters.
I agree with you that we need to "get some real people in office with track records of success." However, that is easier said than done. Let's skip all the fundamental difficulties (money, recognition, your opposition and the media labeling you an idiot, etc.) a candidate has to face in order to be elected. The key issue, it seems to me, is that all candidates have their flaws. I have yet to find a 'perfect' political candidate, just as I have yet to find a perfect human being.
Take for example Gov. Chris Christie, who I like, and who many believe would be an excellent Republican Presidential candidate. Chris Christie is not only a strong believer in Global Warming and the dire effects of CO2, but he has gone so far as to ban new coal plants in New Jersey. Christie also intends to shut down current coal plants, and is committed to New Jersey's 2021 Renewables & Efficiency Standard, which will dramatically increase energy costs in that state for businesses and households. With that Green agenda, Christie would probably even get Al Gore's vote.
So unfortunately, every candidate comes with their own 'garbage' to use your word. Just as many of the choices we make in life are not as clear cut as black and white, many of the political candidates we eventually vote for are at times just the best of two defective choices. Just as I will vote for ANY Republican nominee in the 2012 presidential election against Barack Obama, I voted for Carly Fiorina, because with all her flaws, she was a better candidate than Barbara Boxer.
Rush, Thank you for your kind

Rush, Thank you for your kind words. Apparently, I got off on the wrong foot with some folks around here although I can't quite figure out why. I'm here for the same reasons as everybody else. I enjoy political discussion with passionate people. That's all.
As for politicians, it's surely easier said than done. All candidates do indeed have their flaws, but I think the largest issues preventing us from finding quality leadership stems from the two party system. We're constantly forced to choose the lesser evil. That's a sad way to vote. I can't stand Ron Paul, but I do like the fact that he's able to garner so much support outside of the conventional system. If he can break through, then he sets a strong precedent for future politicians. Again, I don't like his policies, but I do like the possibility that he creates.
Christie is great. I've enjoyed his brunt analysis and steel backbone. He talks the talk and walks the walk. Your examples are tremendous and help to explain why men like him should be the future of the Republican party and NOT people like Perry and Bachmann.
I can see why you voted for Fiorina and I won't hold that against you :) I just am just passionately against her because of being constantly subjected to her blather on CNBC. They quote her as an expert and all she ever does is spout talking points. Give us red meat or get off the air! Obama is a miserable failure and I've said as much in previous posts. He could have been a great president and he had some easy opportunities to do so. Instead, he wasted his capital on a half-a**ed healthcare plan and a hilarious stimulus. What a joke. He clearly got manhandled by his advisors and part of me actually feels sorry for him...until I check my wallet!
Would she be a determinant?
Submitted by CobraMan on Fri, 08/19/2011 - 5:15pm.
If Fiorina did win the election, she would have been a junior member of Congress and not in charge of anything. There's very little that she would have been able to accomplish, or ruin, depending on your point of view. She won't be the chairperson of any committee. She won't be ether the minority or the majority Leader. She won't have much influence at all in the Senate. She'd just be another Junior member. Therefor, her previous job performance as a CEO was meaningless when applied to Senate membership.
The contacts she made as a CEO, on the other hand, can be very useful to the Republicans. Now, as vice chair of the NRSC, her contacts will allow her to cultivate addition donors to the Republicans, something the Republicans need.
As for the 30,000 people who were laid off: look around you. MILLIONS have been laid off over the last three years.

forgot the most important point. If Fiorina had won the election, than one of the worst and destructive Senators in Congress, Barbara Boxer, would not now be in office.
Yes, that is a shame

Yes, it is a shame that too many people used her CEO performance as a justification as to why they should not support her. I don't even blame her for the lay-off. It was HP's competition, who produced models that were faster, cheaper, and, therefor, more desirable, than what HP was producing that lead to those lay-offs. HP was suffering long before she even became the CEO.

Newsweak, let alone subscribe to it. I admit I have glanced through it on a few occasions in my dentist's waiting room. In the future, I will not even do that!

She needs to succinctly explain why she voted for The [sic] Patriot Act or admit it was a mistake.

Define "succinctly," other than "in a way that satisfies me?"

An idea owned by one group cannot be shared by one diametrically opposed to it? Pass the popcorn and buckle up. This is going to be one helluva ride. I'm sick and tired of glass ceilings and celebrity politicians. We need leadership not fluff. Now, hold my drink and watch me sink this putt!

The Peggy Noonan/George Will wing of the Republican party don't like her, either, and will do their level best to discredit her during the primaries. Her leanings on reining in the size and scope of the Federal Government does not sit well with insiders who have presteige and position because of that very thing.

You're right, philmon. I merely used the term Christophobia on another so called "conservative" blog this morning and my comment was censored. The Noonan/Will types don't like to be reminded of their phobias.
