Bozell Column: Ingraham vs. Cultural Blight

By Brent Bozell | July 23, 2011 | 08:33

Laura Ingraham calls her newest book "Of Thee I Zing" a “comedic intervention” on the sorry state of our popular culture. It begins with a declaration of independence from the moral soup in which we swim: “When in a coarse state of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the bonds between themselves and the cultural blight degrading the Republic...they should declare the causes that impel their separation.”

Ingraham's willingness to mix it up on the culture is refreshing and was apparent during her book interview on NBC's “Today,” where she underlined to Matt Lauer that Today's "own" Summer Concert Series included vile artists like woman-battering singer Chris Brown and F-bomb-dropping “artists” Enrique Iglesias and Cee-Lo. How big are these cultural icons? Ingraham and her collaborator on the book, Catholic TV journalist Raymond Arroyo, were amazed at what they thought must be the new homelessness on the streets of New York, but then realized people were camping out two nights early to acquire a choice spot to witness Chris Brown perform on NBC.

Brown is vile. His "music" includes usage of all the mandatory filthy language along with the N word, which vile "musicians" like Brown can use with impunity. There is also the perfunctory misogyny in some of his top songs like “Look at Me Now.” Here’s a little sampler, which requires a lot of bleeping: “Lil n---a bigger than gorilla / ‘Cause I’m killing every n---a that try to be on my s--- / Better cuff your chick if you with her, I can get her / And she accidentally slip and fall on my d--k.”

“Better cuff your chick?” Does he mean put your woman in handcuffs, or “cuff” her as in beat her? The website Urban Dictionary suggests it means “For females: that man in your life that knows how to hold you down.” Brown should know. He confessed in 2009 to physically beating his girlfriend, the pop star Rihanna. And yet, Ingraham lamented, pop stars like this are adored by crowds and honored like royalty by the TV networks.

Ingraham also singled out Enrique Iglesias, the son of Spanish singer Julio Iglesias. She notes the father registered a monster hit with “To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before,” which wasn’t exactly an ode to monogamy. The son has now updated the message in today's culture with a song called “Tonight I’m F---ing You.” The lyrics are completely oxymoronic: “Please excuse me, I don’t mean to be rude, but tonight I’m f---ing you.” If a man said that to a new female acquaintance, she might have to call the police, or at least a couple of older brothers.

Pop stars are more revered in our culture than God. There’s a chapter in the book on religion titled “Eat, Pray...Just Keep God Out of It.” Ingraham reports a 2009 survey from LifeWay Christian Resources found 72 percent of the “millennial” generation described themselves in a poll as “more spiritual than religious.” Ingraham mourns, “Either Oprah Winfrey has a lot of fans or these people have a commitment problem. It’s like telling a spouse ‘I love you, but I’m not passionate.’ Odds are, they really don’t love you that much.”

“Spiritual but not religious” even defines a website called SBNR.org, which claims as its catchphrase “All religions contain some wisdom, but no religion contains all wisdom.” God is what you say He is. In fact, who cares who God is? The focus isn’t so much on God as the face in the mirror. Another motto on their home page: “Love is the answer. You are the question.” Ingraham thinks SBNR should stand for “spiritual, but not really.”

It's not just anti-religion, it's full-fledged anti-religious bigotry. Ingraham recalls how the secular crowd saves its anti-Christian outrages for Holy Week, just to give Easter some added heartburn. On this past Good Friday, Oprah invited author James Frey to discuss his new book “The Final Testament of Holy Bible,” a novel in which Jesus is a recovering alcoholic in a dirty Bronx apartment “who impregnates prostitutes for kicks.”

All this “zinging” has a deeper meaning: to bring some sobriety and focus to the point of raising children in a world that doesn’t want to grow up. The culture-curdlers won’t give up without a fight. Chris Brown and his fans have piled on the insults on Ingraham’s Twitter account, including Brown sticking to his usual vocabulary: “the haters look just as old as F**k!” Twitter was just another forum for his vandalism, another wall for ignorant graffiti.

For this “artist,” it was just another day, another barrage of verbal assault and battery – which hurts a lot less than the beating Brown gave Rihanna.

It's amazing to me

Submitted by Deskpilot on Sat, 07/23/2011 - 8:56am.

how the bad "celebrities," keep me from spending what little money I have. Not watching the networks that promote this carp of culture, I don't know who's advertising, so I don't know where to spend that extra $20 burning a hole in my pocket.
I sure hope that my DVR is reporting back to the ratings agencies what my viewing habits are so that they can see that they're not getting to me!.

Sometimes I just shake my head at how so many no talent losers seems to become big stars in TV, the music industry or the media. My number one example would be Rosie O'Donnell. She did one or two mildly entertaining movies and all of a sudden she was a big high paid star on The View spewing her clueless uninformed GED wisdom to delighted audiences. I have never heard so many stupid things come from just one person.

What a pile of psychobabble! I would challenge the creator of that phrase to explain what it means.

These SNBR people are just so full of themselves.  And full of something else, too!

The truly sad part

Submitted by misterbee241 on Sat, 07/23/2011 - 9:25am.

is this stuff sells. That's why it keeps going. If there were no market for it, it would die. But we have become so coarse, so immoral, so disgusting, that anything is acceptable now. And when we disagree and call this garbage what it is we are called haters and various and sundry nasty names. We are headed for a fall. It is coming. Those of us who believe in what is good and right had better hang on tight because it's going to be a rough ride.

If you're not getting flak, you're not over the target.

I think he is a scumbag for what he did. However I believe America is a great place where we have our choice of things we can watch and listen to

If you want to listen to a Christian Network you can, if you enjoy Enrique Iglesias, you can listen to him too. I believe folks on both sides, liberals and conservatives care way too much about what other folks are watching.

I am a very strong supporter of allowing people to hold prayers and share the gospel whenever they have an opportunity. I totally agree that libs and some atheist are way too angry

Now Mr Bozell does not take it to the levels of angry liberals demanding Rush Limbaugh is taken off the airwaves because they consider it hate speech, but it is very clear Mr Bozell does not like the fact that he does not like other people watching what he opposes and if there was a legal means to control what people watch. He would do it

I do not believe that having more choices on entertainment choices means our society is going downhill. There are bigger things to worry about like our country going downhill because we are broke.

It is also about who is giving filth a stage. Maybe we should all have bumper stickers that say "NBC - anti- U.S."

Not all of Chris Browns albums are bought with welfare dollars. I would hope Chris Brown has the same fate as MC Hammer and I will let the market decide

Same with NBC. I will let the market decide. Comcast does not have deep pockets like GE. They are bleeding subscriptions and The NBC entertainment division has not had a hit for years. They cant continue rating duds for Matthews and Lawrence Odonnell for much longer.

Hi Shawn

Submitted by Lord-come-soon-... on Sat, 07/23/2011 - 2:39pm.

I think the more important point has nothing to do with the first amendment, which we all agree allows these "artists" to say the things they say. The point Mr. Bozell is trying to convey is that just because it's legal to say these vile things, are they serving any good? The horrible crapola that passes for music, and much of television is having a terrible effect on the young people of this nation. And believe me, I speak from experience as a Christian father of two teenagers. It's a constant battle to keep this filth from invading our home because it's EVERYWHERE. NBC can't have it both ways. They preach about things they think are good for the country, and then sponsor something that is obviously detrimental to the country.

Hi Lord come soon

Submitted by shawn. on Sat, 07/23/2011 - 4:18pm.

I totally understand your point about being a Christian man and trying to raise kids with all the garbage music and tv these days. It is all geared toward sex and violence.

I am a huge advocate of protecting anyone even a minute from their 18th birthday from watching this stuff and it starts with good role model parents like yourself

However I am also a huge advocate of choices for adults. I am glad we have different things we listen to and watch. I just honestly don't see the concept in worrying about what other people watch. Take care of your own family and let others decide how to raise theirs is my take

Lord Come Soon has a point*

Submitted by cajun2 on Sat, 07/23/2011 - 4:33pm.

It is not a matter of censorship, policing morality nor is it simply a matter of parenting. There are over 4 million new births in the US every year.  If only 25% of those parents  believe as Lord Come Soon, that leaves 3 million children growing up exposed to vile media designed and distorted to erase any boundaries or morals.

What is of concern is not just my children or Lord Come Soon's children but the next generation, and the generations following when we have an entire society corrupted by lack of morality and boundaries.  It may begin with, "as long as it doesnt affect me", people have a right to choose"...all of which is "equitable" to most. My concern is the there will one day be a slow progression to  NO boundaries or limits. That will lead to chaos and a total breakdown of civilized society.

It totally is a subject of good parenting

Submitted by shawn. on Sat, 07/23/2011 - 6:28pm.

Everyone should try to bring their kids up right

There was Elvis and there was the Beattles, then came Jimmy Hendrix, then KISS and Disco, then Madonna and Two live crew and rap, then Sheryl Crow and Tupac.

I believe the world will go on after Lady Gaga and Chris Brown. It's the irresponsible spending of our citizens and our government that we can't survive.

I can't interpret Mr. Bozell's intent, but I *THINK*

Submitted by WhoIsJohnGalt on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 10:47am.

he and Laura are more pointing out the cheerleading that the mainstream media do for these garbage peddlers. Not a single bit of critical thinking applied to any of the work that these "artists" spew, and not a whit of a concern of what this kind of crap teaches those who adore them.

What do you think these idiots in the media would do if Toby Keith came out with a song where he recounts how he dreamed about strolling down a street in Harlem, blasting n*gg*s away with his shotgun, and smackin' their ho's around before he forced them to fall on his d**k? Really, do you think he would be lauded as these dirtbags are?

And yes, Captain Obvious, everyone has the right to listen to what they want...that silly statement doesn't even rise to the level of being a point. Toby Keith would have that right, but for damn sure, he wouldn't have a forum for it. Not that he would stoop so low, nor would his fans support him for it.

That's my point exactly

Submitted by Lord-come-soon-... on Sat, 07/23/2011 - 7:59pm.

Thanks for stating it better than I could. There are those who reject any "slippery slope" argument, but this business with the direction music and television is going is a perfect example. And I'll say one more time, if there are those who want to hear it, I guess that's their right, but they are harming themselves and the future of our nation and our world.

You must also consider that

Submitted by ant on Sat, 07/23/2011 - 7:14pm.

You must also consider that this "degradation" of respect, standards and manners in the entertainment industry and elsewhere is also compounded by the negative portrayal and mischaracterization that those who choose to avoid 'filth' in their lives receive on many fronts. The insults of 'intolerant', 'puritan', etc., come to mind, as well as, assaults on Christianity everytime a Christian holiday rolls around, and the mere fact that those who behave themselves rarely get their name on screen or print. (The quarter-back(?) that made the 'controversial' pro-life commercial is another, I forget his name, Tebow? Whatever you're position on abortion, the controversy surrounding that should not have been a controversy at all in the Land of the Free. Sodomh and Gomorah, yes, America, no.)

You will get no argument out of me ant

I totally agree with what you say. It bothers liberals so much that a person believes in God and want to wait until marriage to do the deed to make it more special

Liberals are the most intolerant of all. That is why I say folks from both sides should stop worrying about what other people do with their lives.

Hi, shawn.

Submitted by ant on Sat, 07/23/2011 - 7:41pm.

Just stating some observations, not trying to argue. As a rock-n-roll fan and a guitar player, I know music has always been an outlet for a vast array of emotions from spirituality, to love and from anger to sex. I think the difference sometimes in our culture now is the saturation on one end of the spectrum. I notice almost every local band I ever see has learned, "F-U", "You're a Crazy B--tch", "Tonight I'm ___ You",etc. Gets kinda tiresome hearing the same songs, and does create a 'mood' sometimes. There are hard-rocking songs that are uplifting. Heck, even when people like Robert Plant or Mick Jagger wrote from the crotch, they tried to dress it up lyrically. I have to wonder would "Whole Lotta Love" be "Whole Lotta F___" today?

Good stuff, too. In fact, if you are from the PA/NJ area, a local channnel (17) is running a marathon of the old 80's show Dancin' On Air. A popular local 80's version of American Bandstand. Kelly Rippa was apparently one of the dancers, as were some friends of mine. I'm watching so I can see them in their upturned collars, and bright colored clothes. The hair was a trip too.

Anyone who dares to question the raw sewage coming out of the "entertainment" industry is called a "hater", a "censor" and worse; the so-called "singer" Chris Brown's vile tweets attest to this. Pornography, blasphemy and profanity are considered "free speech", while prayer, for example, is considered "dangerous" and should be "banned". What's wrong with this picture, ladies and gentlemen? By the way, Chris Brown should be in jail, not performing on the "Today" show!
