Bozell Column: The Zero-Blame Game

The media pandering on behalf of the Obama Re-election camp already is astonishing. During the George W. Bush years, everything bad that happened in America somehow was connected to the malignant reign of “The Decider.” Last year, CBS even sought out journalist Sally Quinn to  claim that Bush’s victory in 2000 could be blamed for unraveling Al Gore’s marriage ten years later.

God knows, and so too do most Americans, that the state of the union is a mess. But in the Obama era, nothing that goes wrong can be traced back to the Democrats in power.

A savvy viewer would have been shocked watching the June 30 CBS Evening News with a story on “cuts” to the Medicaid program in California, and one puts “cuts” in quotes because overall Medicaid spending never goes down, even if limitations in service or fee increases happen. CBS reporter Bill Whitaker reported from California on some poor people who might eventually be hurt by Medicaid changes. But two names never came up in this CBS piece: Barack Obama, or the new/old Democrat governor of California, Jerry Brown.

“We met Sharon Brown and her ten-year-old daughter Rosa at the Arroyo Vista family health center,” proclaimed Whitaker, “where Rosa came for strep throat. With a family income below the federal poverty line of $18,310 a year, Rosa’s treatment and Sharon’s checkup cost just a dollar each.”

But since the “temporary infusion of federal funds to Medicaid” is running out, “California is taking a $4.8 billion hit. So, like most states, California is scrambling to reduce costs, cutting services, cutting doctors’ payments, raising patients’ co-payments. $5 for office visits, $50 for emergency rooms, $100 to $200 a day for hospital stays. You might think that’s not much.”

Sharon Brown helpfully batted that down: “But you know what? You're wrong. You’re so wrong. Because people do need it. People count on it.” Sharon Brown proceeded to complain that they’ve had to rent out more than half their house and they still struggle to pay their bills since she was laid off.

Whitaker concluded: “California already is struggling with a budget crisis of its own and doesn't have the funds to make up for the federal cuts to Medicaid. With unemployment here near 12 percent -- among the highest in the country -- the Arroyo Vista clinic and others like it don`t expect to see any reduction in need.”

That’s a standard liberal media sob story, requiring federal funding, with one very weird exception: blame. CBS made no attempt to notice it is Jerry Brown and not just the faceless entity “California” that’s overseeing this effort to cut subsidies and raise payments on the poor. What of Obama’s $900 billion “stimulus” jobs program? Neither was cited.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that California received about $12.4 billion of the $90 billion of the “stimulus” the Obama administration injected into Medicaid programs – as if increased government welfare spending stimulates the economy. The extra subsidies meant the federal government matched California at 62 cents on the dollar instead of 50 cents. The “stimulus” hasn’t petered out, yet CBS is already banging a can for more taxpayer “investment.”

The state government of California has become infamous for overspending under governors of both parties, but somehow CBS can never manage to get beyond the ever-demanding needs of its  televised victims to consider the fate of the entire state, or the fate of the entire American economy, if no one ever cuts (or just limits) spending on anything.

That same CBS newscast began with anchorman Scott Pelley in high dudgeon: “Tonight, what we’ve learned about a stunning lapse in security. A man flies across country with no ticket, no valid boarding pass, and no matching ID. Bob Orr on the multiple failures of U.S. airport screening.” Orr was shocked that Transportation Security Agency screeners had failed to prevent a Nigerian national named Olajide Noibi from boarding a Virgin America flight from New York to Los Angeles. Noibi was taken into custody later in Los Angeles after he showed up at the airport and tried to fly to Atlanta carrying more than ten outdated boarding passes.

Guess who was never seriously challenged by CBS for this security lapse, despite the near-tragedy of the Nigerian Christmas Day bomber of 2009: the entire Obama administration, from Obama to Homeland Security boss Janet Napolitano to TSA chief John Pistole. Do you think Team Bush would have escaped this kind of scrutiny? The bias by omission among these national media outlets is astounding, and it’s much worse than their relentless pounding of Bush. The media are screening Obama with less caution than the TSA mustered for Mr. Noibi.

And the campaign hasn’t even started.

Are You Stimulated Yet?

Submitted by rogue operator on Tue, 07/05/2011 - 10:41pm.

The media's feigned gullibility about the 'unexpected' news that the economy sucks is bordering on culpability in the massive scam that is the Obama administration. Instead of nightly perp walks for lying about the stimulus program, for yelling 'racism!' in a crowded Washington mall on the day of the Obamacare vote, for mishandling the BP oil spill, and for so much more, we get fawning photo-ops of Michelle balancing a styrofoam plate of lobster mac n' cheese on her rear end to rounds of applause, while Obama tries yet again to avoid another double bogey on a par five. I mean, enough already!

"Defiant House rejects..." Dallas Morning News 6/25/11

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Wed, 07/06/2011 - 10:27am.

Twisting media... I thought this "defiant" wording was interesting in relation to ruler Obama: (large print top of pg.1) "Defiant House rejects U.S. mission in Libya," then smaller print: "Lawmakers deny the president the authority to wage war but don't cut off funds fro the operation." They are upset that the did not bow to the Chosen One.

They better start acting "defiant." It is about time! And just in time to save our nation! Speak the truth! Do not allow lies to go politely unanswered!

What was it Hillary said about airport screening?

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 07/05/2011 - 11:05pm.

You can't professionalize unless you federalize?

Yeah, those federal screeners sure are "professional," aren't they?

What a useless bunch of losers! They were probably too busy harassing an 80-year-old woman with a walker.

Had this been a few years ago, it would have somehow been laid directly at the feet of George W. Bush and Halliburton.

But everything now is the fault of vaceless and nameless "government."

Give up on the intellectual honesty in the MSM

Submitted by rogue operator on Wed, 07/06/2011 - 9:42am.

Rob man, we have to stop acting like we can talk reason to these people, and support alternative media. We need to check the MSM, but not expect that they will change their ways. Cheers, RO

totally agree with column, plus now media blackout on Will column

Submitted by merly1 on Wed, 07/06/2011 - 8:27am.

George Will and some East Coast media highlighted this week-end the name of a man cited in a new book that claims this person is "most responsible for the greatest destruction of public wealth in world history." That is quite a charge, and it seems unfair to me to a degree (full disclosure = I was also raised in the rural MN town where he hailed from)-->but still that IS an amazing charge. This guy was a Mondale protege, Dem operative of longstanding, etc. Does anybody doubt if this book was blaming a GOP'er--> it wouldnt be leading the nightly news for a couple of evenings? 60 minutes expose to follow? ;o) Media bias is simply stunning.

Blame game

Submitted by jessieH on Wed, 07/06/2011 - 9:49am.

I don't get my news from tv, any more. I go online. TV is dead. I think reality shows killed it. As for the "blame game", It's easy to see who's to blame, when you look from all sides. All of them! Every last polititian in office! Career polititians! Cowardly Representatives! Corrupt Senators! The White House and everyone who works there! Then, we have "the media". What can I say about the job they have been doing? The ugliness they spew out, every day, every hour, is sickening! I don't think the country would be so bad off, if not for the media. Thanks to the media, we have obama in office, destroying everything we have built this Nation on. Thanks to the media, we have to go online to find the truth behind their lies. I have absolutely no respect for anyone in the media, any more. Even Fox News is getting redundant. If you really want to know who to blame, just look to the media. That's who's to blame for all of this.

blame

Submitted by varmit on Wed, 07/06/2011 - 1:48pm.

Obama and the democrats can't be blamed if they didn't do anything. Where is their budget? Obama's didn't get one vote, no democrat voted for it. They had the house, senate and White House and never had a budget. They don't like the Republician budget because it stops spending without tax increases. They have to raise taxes as it is a campaign year.

Creating dependency ....

Submitted by JLin on Wed, 07/06/2011 - 2:34pm.

This is a classic illustration of how corrupt and incompetent bureaucrats and politicians have wrecked the proper administration of government. Government generally cannot provide anything effectively without squandering tax dollars and creating permanent social dependency. The chaos, waste and inefficiency multiply exponentially with any increase in government involvement in the economy. That is precisely why the Founders prescribed a limited government. We have ourselves to blame because we "assumed" politicians and bureaucrats would always act honorably. We were all wrong, two generations worth, now we have a huge mess to fix.

Mr. Bozell

Submitted by gwalt on Wed, 07/06/2011 - 4:55pm.

Mr. Bozell,

Please fire up another campaign targeting media bias---scratch that-----media anchor and reporter bias. Call them out in public, on billboards, in newspapers in TV ads-----then we will take viral. We will also donate. At least ask your readers if they want something like this.
Do you not believe that having Matt Lauers face on a billboard with "Stop The Bias and Lies Matt" will have an effect on his reporting? I believe it will. Call him,. and Diane and Brian and Scott and Georgie Stepphie out!.

They will do damage and take every rumor and innuendo, making stuff up whole cloth from MMFA and air it. UNLESSS we go on offense and put them on notice!

Come on---we want this! Look at how Trump fired people up by bluntness. Let's blunt them. They are already covering and covering for Oclueless One. WE come here by voluntary means------lets go to the people going thru a MickeyD's drive thru or a Dunkin Donuts and get in their faces.

What are they going to do? Call you names? They already do.

"A lot of briefing for a 2 hr. special with Dan Rather. Saw the show & wonder why we bothered".             Ronald Reagan
