Bozell Column: Exposing the Hollywood 'Clique'

By Brent Bozell | June 04, 2011 | 08:02

Brent Bozell's picture

Born blocks from the NBC soundstage in 1984 to parents in the entertainment industry, Ben Shapiro is a natural choice to write a book about Hollywood. For his new book "Primetime Propaganda," Shapiro has studied decades of television content and interviewed a bevy of powerful Hollywood producers to document the degree to which they have created a political and cultural revolution of permissive leftism.

The project gets off to a harsh start. In his introduction, Shapiro attacks "traditional" TV critics on the cultural right for being "worse than useless," suggesting some unnamed conservatives are insisting TV should not be watched. “When conservatives treat television as the Golden Calf, they leave no choice but to lay low the unbelievers -- and most of us continue to continue occasionally glancing at the offending cow."

Let's stipulate that perhaps Shapiro is trying to sell the usefulness of his own book by insisting it will succeed where other conservative critiques have failed. Because once you get past the straw-man introduction, there's a lot of eye-opening detail that begs to be discussed.

Hollywood's made endless movies about cruel, life-destroying blacklisters of communist sympathizers, which is rich irony given their ongoing efforts to blacklist conservatives from their own industry. Shapiro calls this chapter “The Clique.”

Actor Dwight Schultz ("The A-Team") was overheard by producer Bruce Paltrow praising President Reagan in the 1980s at a theatre festival, and Paltrow called him a "Reagan [A-word]." Months later, when Schultz came to audition for the role of Dr. Fiscus on the NBC show "St. Elsewhere," Paltrow asked why he had shown up: "There's not going to be a Reagan [A-word] on this show!"

Schultz, an accomplished voice-over actor in cartoons, found this viewpoint even in the animation genre. He received a casting call for the cartoon movie "Astro Boy" that described the character of "President Stone" as a "cross between a refined, somewhat more controlled version of General Buck Turgison (George C. Scott) from Dr. Strangelove and Dick Cheney."

"You get this in the mail," Schultz insisted about his cartoon work. "This is very typical, very mild...'He's an [A-word], like George Bush.’" Schultz doesn't describe his experience as a blacklist, but as a mindset. "It's a social network...But the social aspect of the business is, to a large degree, everything these is."

Leonard Goldberg, executive producer of  "Blue Bloods" for CBS -- says liberalism in the TV industry is "100 percent dominant, and anyone who denies it is kidding, or not telling the truth." Shapiro asked if conservative politics are a barrier to entry. "Absolutely," Goldberg replied, adding that the late actor Ron Silver felt his opportunities became very limited when he vocally shifted to the right after 9/11.

It starts to sound like discrimination. There’s the story of Fred Thompson and “Law and Order” Rene Balcer, who insisted “I said I’m not coming back as long as that guy is on the show. I didn’t think much of his acting or the character.” If you’re conservative, you somehow can’t act. The book cites Entertainment Weekly editor Mark Harris saying he “expected to hate” ABC’s comedy “The Middle” due largely to the political views of right-leaning actress Patricia Heaton (but then was pleased the show was “left-populist”).

Shapiro says the Hollywood Left cannot understand why anyone would attack their programming. "After all, they argue, Americans don't attack the Associated Press's reporting. Why should they attack Hollywood when it merely reports what's happening in the world?"

That's how Anne Sweeney, president of the Disney-ABC Television Group justified taking "ABC Family" into racier territory: "The best way to resonate with your audience is to be authentic. And you're only authentic if you are holding up a mirror to your audience and saying `I see you.'"

Many TV producers complained to Shapiro that Hollywood's product was merely "reflective" of society, and not "transformative." But liberal produer David Shore, the creator of "House," called that a "knee-jerk reaction" and a "cop-out," because "we're also thrilled by the fact that we're touching people's lives."

Hollywood is completely inauthentic. It doesn’t reflect society. It distorts society. Why? They don’t reflect reality. It’s their own 90210 reality. They know nothing about the real world.

This is where Shapiro's book really hits home. Television acts as a magnifier of the life experiences of Hollywood "visionaries." They write what they know and how they live, with all of the libertine, "progressive" idealism and the anti-religious, anti-traditional cynicism combined.

His bottom line, after all of his interviews and all of his content analysis, is simple. "Television reflects those who create it and transforms everybody else." That's a very frightening ten words about the future of our culture.

Shapiro's bottom line

Submitted by ripper58 on Sat, 06/04/2011 - 8:31am.

is absolutely right! But if the elite in TV think they are holding up a mirror to the general populous then they truly have their heads up their collective (A-word) . They think we don't know the crap they produce isn't real? They truly do not know the American public!

Ben Shapiro exemplifies the very best of a generation of young up-and-coming conservatives.

I have been reading him at townhall for years, and was amazed when I found out that he was as young as his photo looked.

I would have loved to see him cross intellectual swords with our "IQ off the charts" president when he was the same age.

You don't think Jersey Shore is meant to convey a message? Why is at least one the characters doing commercials? Because they are influencing people and a company wants to take advantage of it. Why aren't tobacco companies allowed to advertise on television? Because television affects the way people think.

By the way, I don't know if the name was changed to "Belles" but it was originally "Bi#@!"

Rad, you're not thinking like a liberal.

Don't you know that people are influenced by depictions of smoking?  That's why so few fictional characters (except the villains) are shown with cigarettes; because kids are dumb and malleable.

OTOH, people, especially kids, are NOT influenced by behavior such as promiscuity and drinking, because they're smart enough to know it's not real.

Got it now?

Well

Submitted by Rush to Judgement on Sat, 06/04/2011 - 10:15am.

I tend to watch a hell of a lot of TV and I can honestly only identify one person from Jersey Shore - Snookie. Is that her name, or am I confusing it with the cookie chain? Fortunately there is plenty of alternative programming. However, were you fooled into thinking the Real World was "real" back in 1992? Reality TV has never been real, it's been about exploitation of the clinically stupid and handsome paychecks.

My understanding is that a book was written with the title, and ABC used it as a working title while shooting a pilot.  Shows and movies see a number of title changes from script to screen.  Did you really think ABC was going to use that title for series?

Are you really denying that television has an affect on our culture? If so, why does NBC have "green week"?

Now what an assinine statement

Submitted by ahusser on Sat, 06/04/2011 - 9:53am.

In almost all media the Liberal Bias is so thick you can cut it with a knife. Even if fictional, and most media is fictional, liberal points of view and messages come through with a constancy that is mind boggling. But you are saying because it is fiction it doesn't count because it is fiction? You mean fiction never portrays or attempts to portray real life or use real characters in disguise (the names have been changed to protect the innocent). It doesn't count when a producer/writer of such "fiction" uses the medium not only to entertain but to send a socio/political message even if only to appear cool or hip, topical and with it?

So if it is fiction you are saying that the brainwashing propaganda, slant, bias and subliminal constantly leftward skewed messaging doesn't count. Even in the most fantastic of movies or novels or anything else fiction with impossible monsters and technology the characters and human interactions have to be recognizable as such. The writers can portray these human situations in almost anyway he/she wants put any words and points of views they want. The director can too. Here are some of the "constants" I continually see in movies and read in novels:

Large corporations and their CEO's are power hungry conspirators bent on world domination or a variant thereof..
Christians are evilly misguided.
Veterans are violent, and/or drug addled with PTSD or other mental problems.
The Military is evil.
The CIA is always evil.
Catholic Priests are (take your pick) corrupt pedophiles or masochistic murders. And the church hierarchy is: (see large corporations).
These "constant" themes in one variant or the other are in almost every movie made feel freeto add your own.
Homosexuality is wonderful and normal.

These themes (and this is just a partial list) pervade almost every fictional medium.

This is true.

Veterans are violent, and/or drug addled with PTSD or other mental problems.

Most of these fall in line with military movies as I've listed below.

The Military is evil.

The Pacific, Inglorious Basterds, Flags of our Fathers, Band of Brothers, Transformers, Pearl Harbor, Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Apocalypse Now, We Were Soldiers, GI-Frickin-Piece-O-Crap-Joe (the movie)...

The CIA is always evil.

Mission: Impossible series, The Good Shepherd, pretty much every Bond film, though more of that is focused on MI6, Meet the Parents, Alias, Covert Affairs...

Catholic Priests are (take your pick) corrupt pedophiles or masochistic murders. And the church hierarchy is: (see large corporations).

Nothing Sacred, The Exorcist, Passion of the Christ, Signs, Dogma, Saved, Stigmata, 7th Heaven, Rocky...

Homosexuality is wonderful and normal.

Philadelphia, Boys Don't Cry, Chasing Amy, American Beauty, Beverly Hills 90210, LA Law, Law & Order...

They cherry pick single situation as if it is more the norm than a supposed agenda.

Even with volumes of fact filled and NUMEROUS situations, they still stubbornly run back to a single situation or simply call you a zealot, redneck who loves simpleton Reagan and is a "straight up" racist (with no thanks to JG who can't act a lick, but manages to find work)....

proof of what I have said for years

Submitted by ohio granny on Sat, 06/04/2011 - 9:23am.

For years I have said television and movies do influence the public. If that were not so, why do companies advertise? Who pays the enormous salaries these people receive? For television actors/actresses most, if not all, come from the advertisers on their shows.

We all know that the more you are exposed to something abnormal/wrong the more acceptable it becomes. Otherwise why do so many shows push the gay agenda and all things liberal? At the same time they bash anything remotely conservative.

One other question, why do so many of these people seem to hate America? They have no problem taking advantage of all that is offered while bashing those very things that have made them wealthy.

Prejudice

Submitted by iveseenitall on Sat, 06/04/2011 - 9:45am.

"Liberal" prejudice is palpable. It's blatantly obvious in education and government. Of course, the entertainment industry, including the "news" programs, has dropped all pretense of objectivity. Affirmative Action has also poisoned the private sector. The "liberal" menace has been creeping upon us for decades. If we don't consciously fight it , every day, America will be lost. Thank God (dare I use the "G" word) for young conservatives like Shapiro and others, such as Jason Mattera, author of "Obama Zombies". Talk to your kids---every chance you get. Educate yourself and then educate them. Show them Shapiro's and Mattera's books. Point out what's on the t.v., not only the soft porn, but also the dangerous use of lies, distortions, and propaganda. Go to the schools and confront lefty teachers and college professors. Check your kid's textbooks and homework assignments. Don't fear this P.C. world which has made you economic slaves to the few, while generation after generation has been condemned to a "new world order" which is mostly a horror show for the many. I'm afraid it is you who has built a bunker--in your own mind-- one from which nothing of the real world can be seen or heard. Time to open that mind, come out of your ignorant bunker and see the light of truth. It'll hurt at first, but you'll be the better for it in the long run. I call a mollycoddling mama's boy that has never left the comfort of mama's wing and interacted with other humans a mama's boy. What is the response?

Is that supposed to hurt my feelings?

No, mollycoddling mama's boy, insults are not supposed to hurt. First time ever in the history of mankind has an insult not been designed to hurt. Either you are too stupid to know insults are not supposed to hurt. Or once again, one landed too close to home and instead of shrugging it off like a normal person, you blindly point out that, indeed, your hurt butt is all butt hurtin' like the idiot you are.

Pathetic. But then most mama's boys are.

Because rules don't apply to crackheads like Zippers. Because crackheads are well, crackheads.

I've got to chime in

Submitted by FastEd on Sat, 06/04/2011 - 10:15am.

and though it's slightly off topic, the left and liberals/progressives are all talk and no walk. The hypocracy of their talk is beyond reason - My real life example - my grown daughter, a degree in Childhood Education, gotton over the objections of the lib/progressive Dean of the shcool - because she is in a wheelchair. Why? She wants to work with children, she's a kid magnet, kids just naturally gravitat towards her, they ask questions and she answers them - AND she's on their eye-to-eye level - she's not a threat nor a Big person.

When she submitts a resume, via snail or email, calls come immediately, "you're just what we're looking for, experience to date is super . . ." , BUT, when she rolls into the interview, these paragons of virture, of liberal and free or progressive thinking, shudder, and my daughter notices it, and already knows the routine - "Oh, I'm sorry, the jobs' been filled, we forgot to contact you, we ran out of money, filled it internally . . " Then the posting is put up again! No way to prove discrimination, but this has happened more times we can count, but she won't give in to the stupids of the progressive world - besides, they lose - and they prove the liberal mind set - big talk, but no action.

"We the People . . " Hey, congress - I'm one of the people - start listening!

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

"Liberal" hypocrisy --- right on. It's why I put "liberal" in quotes. These people are not liberal at all. Too often, they are just the opposite. Over the many years I've worked with so-called "liberals", I've experienced their disgusting, dishonest two-facedness. Many of them decry the "evils" of our society in public, yet in private are among the worst homophobes, sexists, racist I've ever met. They talk "open-mindedness", yet are among the most closed-minded, unimaginative dullards the world has ever seen. Do you think, for example, people like Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi , Barry Obama or so many other lefties have ever had an original thought in all their long lives? No. Your daughter is experiencing the world of the true "liberals"--intolerant ideologes whose creed is "do as I say, not as I do". They think, first and formost, about themselves and their ideology--but, in fact , they never practice what they preach. Sad. [Never,Never trust a "liberal" (progressive) ]

House and the political mirror

I remember the episode of House in late 2008 when someone opened a door to a stall in the bathroom and there on the wall was a "VOTE FOR CHANGE" bumper sticker. No one said a word about it, it was just there.I guess that was a mirror to society too. We stopped watching House about that time and haven't seen it since.

Right on. Being sneaky and cowardly are among the many characteristics of the left. They haven't the courage for an open debate on the issues, because they know they'll lose. Therefore, they use subliminal propaganda on those who are not even aware it is happening to them--particularly the young and impressionable. You turned it off--good for you. Keep up the good fight. I Wouldn't Feel Too Bad About The Astro Boy Snub...

Submitted by TheReal7Sticks on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 2:39am.

Truth be told, I think Dwight Schultz actually dodged a bullet to his conservative credibility with that one. I meant, the producers of that - how should I say it? - rape of a classic anime and manga series from the 1960s completely changed the whole theme of the Astro Boy canon to be about communist-style robot uprisings in order to take over the city they inhabit. The original stories by Osamu Tezuka were supposed to be about bridging the gap between humanity and robotics and how they could live with each other in peace equally. I tell you, Tezuka must be rolling over in his grave over that one.

Actually, there are better shows that Dwight Schultz appeared in, like Afro Samurai (the Samuel L. Jackson anime series about a black samurai on a quest to get back his title as the number one warrior in the world.) I highly recommend that one.

I don't know what all the hub bub is about...

Submitted by BosTarus on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 12:55pm.

Film and TV is an industry of artists-a profession which has always slanted towards the progressive. Hollywood has been that way since the days of silent film-the shows and movies you loved as a kid were mostly put together by liberals.

The business just attracts that mode of thinking-nothing too conspiratorial about it. Though the stories of denying conservative actors work is definitely dismaying and shameful; but on the whole, most shows aren't out to push an agenda. They're out to entertain and make money-which they do very well.

Also, all this tv trash talking coming from people who refuse to watch any "modern tv" is silly. We are in a second golden age of the medium-long form story telling has been at its best this past decade. If you can let your anger go for a moment, and maybe learn to tolerate the occasional concept that goes against your political beliefs-you might find alot that's worth watching. There are amazing shows on right now-its a great time to be a tv buff.

"One other question, why do

Submitted by mdgiles on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 4:48pm.

"One other question, why do so many of these people seem to hate America? They have no problem taking advantage of all that is offered while bashing those very things that have made them wealthy."

Perhaps it's insecurity and self hatred. If you don't believe you deserve the good fortune you've been given, you will come to hate those who have given it to you. If you're living on an estate, and can't really figure out why you're not still waiting tables, you try to compensate. You try to "do all the right things" and support "all the right causes", because that makes you feel worthy. If you're not secure in your craft, if you don't believe - deep down inside - that you're deserving of your success, you look for outward signs that you're "good enough". Besides as Churchill said: "If you're not a Socialist at twenty, you have no heart. If you're still a Socialist at forty, then you have no head". What could be more descriptive of Hollywood, than a bunch of spoiled children?
