NewsBusters Publisher Bozell to CNN: Zakaria Must Recuse Himself Immediately
The President’s secret meetings with Fareed Zakaria – the same reporter who openly used a CNN network broadcast to promote Obama in 2008 – show a clear and disturbing double standard at CNN.
For decades, the liberal media have repeatedly condemned conservatives in the media who communicated privately with Republican presidents. They furiously attacked George Will in 1980 when he advised candidate Ronald Reagan, and trounced on Roger Ailes when he sent President Bush a note about the new war on terror in the wake of September 11th. Neither of them was a reporter.
Zakaria is a reporter – or says so. To now claim that Zakaria’s covert meetings do not conflict with his journalistic integrity is not only inaccurate, it’s hypocritical by CNN’s standards. As such, Zakaria must recuse himself immediately from covering foreign policy that affects the United States. A refusal to extricate himself is in clear violation of CNN’s journalistic principles.

Like the Wizard of Oz, now that he's exposed, his game is up. But, Fareed must have missed the concept. With his commentary, it was as if he was trying to hide behind a clear shower curtain.
Besides, every time I hear demands that some lefty be removed from their position (for other than legal reasons) it makes me think we're acting like "them".

OT: Debt Ceiling, the Republican Stance, and What You Can Do
Submitted by jdhawk on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 12:47pm.
Here is what is at stake: Republican leaders are insisting that Congress cut spending by as much as the Obama administration wants to raise the debt limit, without any new taxes. Obama is proposing spending cuts and tax increases to rein in the debt.
What you can do: Go to you representatives web site and determine when your representative is holding Town Hall mettings or simliar events during this recess which runs from 16-23 May. Download the following file from the Heritage Foundation how to communicate with members of Congress. It is here: http://my.heritageaction.com/action/heritage-action-recess-briefing-for-...
Insist that your representative maintain the Republcian's stance on the debt limit/budget battle , per the above.
This is the least we can do until we can take back the senate and the presidency in 2012.
Yes, we can!!!!

Zakaria said he is a "reporter"? Where? When?
He is a journalist and a commentator with a very impressive resume` in matters of foreign policy in general and the Mid East in particular. He also publicly stated his support for Obama in the 2008 election. Bozell's demand that he "recuse" himself is laughable.
Zakaria is both brilliant and knowledgeable. I wish the President would consult with him more, not less.

Maybe I've missed something but I wouldn't characterize his explanation as "backpedaling". However, I wouldn't be shocked if either CNN or Zakaria made a grand pronouncement plegding a "No Private Presidential Contact" rule in the future.
FTR, even though you didn't ask, I wasn't particularly startled or outraged by either Will's or Ailes' conduct.

1. CNN's biographical sketch of Zakaria--under the broad category of "Anchors and Reporters"--describes him as "anchoring" a program but not as a reporter. Why?
2. There is a drop down menu at your link which lists CNN "Reporters" A-L and "Reporters" M-Z. Is Zakaria on the list?
3. Is [or was] Larry King a reporter? He's not listed as one. But King's biographical sketch still appears in the "CNN" menu--with the same "Anchors and Reporters" title that headed Zakaria's. Can you clarify, please?
4. How about Limbaugh? Journalist, reporter, or otherwise?

Reporters are journalists, and vice versa
Submitted by falcon on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 4:00pm.
Just as lawyers are attorneys (and don't tell me the two terms aren't interchangeable), reporters are journalists and journalists are reporters. There is no way to separate the two, and I know, because I used to be one.
This conflict of interest is so blatant and obvious it boggles the mind. For CNN and Zakaria to backpedal only indicates that they see it, too, and they're trying to minimize the damage.

Reporter is a listed synonym for journalist so I guess that means they are one and the same.
Synonym: 1: one of two or more words or expressions of the same language that have the same or nearly the same meaning in some or all senses
You can argue the point with Merriam-Webster if you want.

Perhaps the difference is, Roger Ailes isn't/wasn't "on the air."
Likely you deem that a difference without a distinction. C'est la vie.
Yeah, yeah, I know: Ailes pulls the strings behind the scenes but he isn't out front for viewers to relate to and/or place their trust in what he is saying. I doubt there are many -- if any -- viewers of news programs who think much about the "man behind the curtain." I'd wager they're more focused on the talking head and the opinion that person is putting forth.
I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on Zakaria. I'm just looking forward (hoping?) to January 19, 2013 being the last day anybody can visit Obama in the White House. (Or maybe the 20th depending on how Washington chooses to handle Inaguration Day falling on Sunday.)

Again, I wasn't particularly bothered by Ailes offering advice to GWB following 9/11. His extensive history of GOP activism is well documented. Nor do I have any objection to his or Fox News' conservative slant. [Wish he would eighty-six the "fair and balanced" BS, however.]
Maybe you'll get your wish re 1/19/13 (and Rush can resume his WH sleepovers.)
