Bozell to NPR Oversight Committees: Vivian Schiller Resignation 'Doesn't Change a Thing'
Managing Editor's Note: NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center president Brent Bozell sent a letter to the chairmen and ranking members of the House and Senate committees with oversight of NPR stating that PBS does not deserve a dime of taxpayer funding and that a government that is broke should not be in the business of funding a left-wing playground.
A portion of the letter sent by Mr. Bozell to Congress follows:
In today’s remarkably rich and varied communications environment – and today’s dire federal fiscal straits – there is simply no reason to continue government funding for a Corporation for Public Broadcasting, especially a CPB that defines its role as establishing a ‘firewall’ against taxpayer complaints about biased or inaccurate content.
It has been 44 years since Congress established the public broadcasting system, and the dramatic revolution in information technology makes the scarcity argument of the 1967 Act utterly obsolete. Congress’s requirement for fairness in public broadcasting has been disregarded since the system’s very first days.
The resignation of Vivian Schiller doesn’t change a thing about NPR. They are still a radical left-wing toy for the likes of George Soros and they still don’t deserve a dime of taxpayer funding. A government that is broke should not be in the business of funding a left-wing playground.”

I think Brent Bozell missed the mark on this one

While I agree that it's a mistake to focus on the left-wing aspect of the CPB/NPR.
The founders surely didn't intend to have state run media outlets, or they would have provided for it in the Constitution. Instead, Mr. Bozell should have focused on the incredible changes in information technology since the the 1967 Act, and furthermore that it is totally unneccesary in this day and age. Finally, not constitutional.
But I sincerely appreciate the fact that he's keeping the pedal to the metal.

Ditto...Is anyone else having issues when writing a post today? I keep having to hit the "Switch to rich text editor" button when I write a comment...It is not staying on rich text by itself, as it usually does...Weird. Just wondering why it is doing this and if anyone else is having the same problem.

We were having a lot of people w/problems getting the pages to "jump" to the bottom after loading up articles. This was caused by a bug in the rich text editor we use. I've temporarily disabled it for now while we investigate it. Most NBers do not use the rich text editor formatting options, incidentally, and as you said, the option to enable it is still there. The pages were jumping on me

There are a lot of things the founders didn't intend. Like a 2 party system or mass media all in the hands of a few parent corporations. I think funding of NPR and PBS wasn't an all bad idea, but like many it should have sunsetted early on and been done with a LONG time ago. There is a laundry list of GOOD reasons to defund it, don't ruin it with a shoddy argument of the "founders didn't intend public radio" because the founders didn't think about modern media radio, television or corporate structures. I would focus on: The high pay of their execs. The high cost of our deficit shortfall. Something has to be cut, liberals choose our soldiers... government funding is only a small portion of NPR/PBS and it will survive without it. Their ludicrous "balance" of liberalism doesn't deserve federal funding. etc.Thank you, NewsBusters!

The funding should be totally cut off. And to go one further, if an NPR or PBS station received their license for free or at a below market value, they should be given a chance to buy it from the government for full market value. If they can't raise enough money, then auction it off and use the money to pay down the national debt. You're not going to believe this...

Guess this is as good a post as ever to repost my earlier comment:
I do think that public broadcasting should have its budget reduced, if not completely eliminated, yet I still find something fishy about this story, almost as if this story is a big waste of my time and energy to be thinking about. First of all, the sting operation was conducted by James O'Keefe, whom I believe had some choice words applied to him on this site some time ago...

"Bozell Denounces O'Keefe's 'Ugly, Dishonest and Filthy' Stunt
By Brent Bozell | September 29, 2010 | 14:23
The following is NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center (MRC) founder Brent Bozell's statement regarding news of James O’Keefe’s sting operation attempt to embarrass CNN.
The MRC unequivocally denounces James O’Keefe for his attempted assault on CNN. It isn’t just childish and immature; it’s ugly, dishonest and filthy. There is no place in the conservative movement for this type of behavior and that’s exactly what I warned about in a commentary piece I submitted to CNN.com just two days ago.
"Could the Citizen Journalist abuse the public trust?" I wrote in this piece that should run in the next few days. "Hypothetically, of course. Conservatives must all guard against this. Let there be scrutiny, by all means." And I repeat: there must be scrutiny.
Bottom line: We want nothing to do with O’Keefe or his dirty antics.

I find it very odd that you want nothing to do with his "dirty" antics, yet when it somehow benefits you in some way, then let's just sweep that misunderstanding under the rug and fight together again against the socialists.
About the only thing that fella O'Keefe ever did that was worth something was exposing the corruption of ACORN. After that though, like M. Night Shyamalan's movies after The Sixth Sense, it's all gone downhill from there, including this non-story if I ever heard of a non-story. That idiot Schiller (well, both of the Schillers) made the one mistake in talking about this kind of business in the open public. Of course, I could really care less since he was retiring and whatever he said was basically nothing new that I ever heard. If you ask me, I think the Planned Parenthood sting is more newsworthy since it did reveal things to the public that we didn't really know about. But in this case, this is just another waste of my time.;
Just to add a footnote, are you going to keep milking this George Soros-boogeyman for all its worth? You saw what happened when a left-wing prank caller pretended to be David Koch to put egg on Gov. Walker. They have no credibility on the Kochs anymore, just as you have no more credibility over this George Soros fever dream of yours. Try telling the truth for a change.

Government funding of NPR in exchange for favorable presentation of the Democrat party's agenda seems a lot like a money laundering scheme to me. MSNBC and CNN seem to promote the cause without any government funding so why can't NPR? Surely Al Franken can advise them on some cash-rich charities to raid for cash if they get desperate.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
