MRC's Bozell: Media Attack on Santorum Illustrates Campaign to Delegitimize Conservative Thought

By Brent Bozell | January 20, 2011 | 18:41

Editor's Note: In the wake of the CNSNews.com interview with potential presidential hopeful Rick Santorum and his criticism of President Obama’s support for abortion rights, numerous major news outlets including Politico, National Journal, the Wall Street Journal, and the Daily Beast have accused Santorum of playing the “race card” while discussing human life and personhood protected by the Constitution.

Santorum said this: "The question is, and this is what Barack Obama didn’t want to answer: Is that human life a person under the Constitution? And Barack Obama says no. Well, if that human life is not a person, then I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say ‘now we are going to decide who are people and who are not people.’”

What follows is NewsBusters publisher/Media Research Center founder Brent Bozell's reaction to the media attacks on the former Pennsylvania senator.

This has nothing to do with a supposed "race card." This isn’t even just about Rick Santorum. The media whirlwind whipped up on these accusations are nothing more than the continuation of an ugly and dishonest attempt to distort, delegitimize and damn conservative principles and conservative leaders.

Anyone who actually watched this interview can see that Santorum paralleled what many pro-life leaders have compared in the past. Just ask Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Day Gardner, Rev. Childress or any number of other black leaders who have also called abortion the civil rights issue of our day.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

It’s sad that many of these same outlets also failed to report news yesterday of the Philadelphia abortionist charged with the murder of 1 woman and 7 babies born alive and then killed with scissors. It doesn't get more gruesome than that. But that story doesn’t threaten liberal ideology, so I guess it’s just not news.

Santorum does threaten liberal ideology, so they create a false controversy -- and call it news.

If you haven't listened to Rush's reading of Professor William Jacobson's essay or read it at his blog, Legal Insurrection, be sure to do so!

They've gone after Haley Barbour.  They've gone after Sarah Palin.  Now, it's Rick Santorum's turn.

Remember the news, back a few months ago, that the Democrats were sending out their flying monkeys to dig up dirt on a dozen or so possible Republican candidates?  Well, here we go!  Don't you wonder if Media Matters, Daily Kos and Huffington Post contacted Sheriff Dupnik BEFORE he spoke to the media?  His emails/phone call logs would be fascinating.  I have no doubts about it.

TexasMom -- on Sheriff Dupnik.. he's an "D" op all the way

Dupnik asserted: "If you're in law enforcement and you're not a right-winger you get all kinds of heat from the right-wing nuts."

Sheriff Clarence Dupnik calls SB 1070 'racist,' 'disgusting,' and 'unnecessary.'"

Well gee, that's a bit inflamatory, ya think?  He might consider that 70% of the population supports the measure.

Anyway - we already know that Dubnik is an activist Democrat. He's recently been a guest on the radical left's "Democracy Now," NPR, and on bigot Tavis Smiley's PBS show.

The murders were simply an opportunity to vent for the sheriff.

Black people were originally brought to our country as property. The constitution originally counted each black person as 1/2 a person. They were counted as 1/2 a person for the census but not treated, recognized or given the rights of a person. This is what the civil rights movement is and was about.

And slaves were counted as 3/5 for purposes of the census to prevent the south from being overly represented in Congress off the back of slavery.

By restricting the representation of the south, slavery was eventually aboshed. This would have been even more difficult had slaves not been counted as 3/5 and the south had that extra representation.

Submitted by celator on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 7:05pm.

The media racketeers and co-conspiraters are in overdrive now that Obama's re-election campaign is offically in "go" mode. All has been carefully co-ordinated. Connections with radical lefties are in place, secret journo-list passwords memorized, secret handshakes at the ready.

It will be interesting to watch them spin, sprint, and bob and weave as one, while the months as we approach Nov 2012. They've all read their marching orders from the White House, sworn their oaths to Obama, shared their enemies lists and memorized their talking points. Templates for stories about conservatives, Palin, Republicans, ObamaCare critics, pro-lifers, Tea Party participants, are all approved.

Trained seals, every one. They are a complete disgrace to the profession, and to the Republic.

If you take the Legal Insurrection article quoted by Rush today and the past two Glenn Beck shows (1-19 & 1-20) as well as the whole series Beck's been doing on Edward Bernays, it becomes crystal clear what the professional Left is up to.

The bad news for the Democrats is that the people of this nation (especially those who are a little older and who are products of another era of education) are a lot like cats- fiercely independent, don't give a flip about what the elites think of them, and are agile.  Trying to HERD cats is never a good idea- it might work for a brief time, but ultimately, the cats go their own way.

They've been hating on Santorum...

...for a loo-oong time now.  As valid as his point is (and it most certainly IS a valid point, even with the racial overtone included) I can't help but be a little annoyed that any discussion involving any conservative is dealing with social issues and not the economy.

Especially as we have been seeing with Tuscon and Palin et. al. the media is just salivating at the chance to distract the public with Republican stances on abortion, gay marriage, etc.  If these issues don't have an economic element in them, I don't think it serves us very well to even be discussing our views on it.  You need to be extra careful around a hurt, scared animal (post-November libs.)

Can't blame Santorum, since it's not like he was on MSNBC.  When is the last time CNS was cited for a major news story?  How many other articles are on that site?  Did all these outlets also report on the truly alarming articles on the front page?  "Obamacare = pursuit of happiness..."  ?  John Lewis' remarks are far more offensive than Ricky's.

I just don't understand why Santorum had to use the phrase "black man" in discussing Obama's viewpoint.

Of course it will be portrayed as racist, it is racist.  Why is he mentioning the skin color of the President to make his point?  It makes no sense to me.  Anyone can argue his viewpoint without bringing up skin color

Santorum is a man who home schools his children.  Maybe he shouldn't.  These people like Santorum and Palin stick their foots in their mouths and then the media is blamed for it.  What a laugh.  My advice to them is stop sticking your foot in your mouth.

Axelrod, Plouffe, and Podesta must be paying pretty good money these days, for all the semi-stoned, out-of-work, thirty-somethings to spend their days on the blogs, Twitter and Facebook.  Look for more to come along.  They're all hoping to become Ezra Klein or, at least, Amanda Marcotte.  They're the yapping little dogs, trying to keep the cattle herded up.

Obama has NEVER done his own dirty work; he leaves it to others to do it for him and he stands back and pretends he is innocent.  I am reminded of Henry II, "Who will rid me of this turbulent priest."  We all know how that turned out.

You should read the Dred Scott decision.

Submitted by upstatejohn on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 10:43pm.

To answer your question as to why Santorum "had to mention" skin color, it has to do with how he framed his original question. In the interview he said, "The question is, and this is what Barack Obama didn't want to answer: Is that human life a person under the Constitution?" You see, Santorum isn't talking about race, per se, but about who is a person, and thus entitled to legal protections under the constitution. His reference to Obama's African ancestry, and his belief that Obama's views on abortion were accordingly remarkable, can be understood in light of the (I hope) well known Supreme Court case of Dred Scott v Sanford. As everyone probably knows, Chief Justice Taney, and the other Supremes, based their decision, in large part, on the assertion that the framers of the Constitution did not intend to include blacks as citizens and, therefore, that they were not entitled to the rights and privileges( like "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness") accorded citizens under the law. In part, Taney wrote that blacks had "...for more than a century before been regarded as beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race..." and "that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect..." Fast forward to Santorum's abortion comments and it is obvious, at least to me, that he finds it "remarkable" that a member of a race which was once regarded as a non-person under the constitution should not see that abortion is based on just such an indefensible proposition. Once the child in the womb is seen as a person, all bets will be off because that person, nascent as he/she may be, is entitled to constitutional protection, including the right to life. So, much as the MSM wants to squawk about race, Santorum's comment about Obama's skin color had, ironically, nothing to do with race and everything to do with personhood.

Abortion's Blackest Secret.

"We do not want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the (Black) minister is the man who can straighten that idea out if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members."
Margaret Sanger
Founder, Planned Parenthood

"Although black women constitute only 6% of the population, they comprise 36% of the abortion industry’s clientele. The leading abortion providers have chosen to exploit blacks by locating 94% of their abortuaries in urban neighborhoods with high black populations.

This high rate of abortion has decimated the black family and destroyed black neighborhoods to the detriment of society at large.

1,452 African-American children are killed each day by the heinous act of abortion.

3 out of 5 pregnant African-American women will abort their child.
"...For those of you that don't know, Barack Obama became a "minister" of Planned Parenthood a long time ago. He's so good at carrying out their racist, murderous, agenda against Afro-Americans and society at large, they gave him a 100% score on his voting record.

Planned Parenthood is following the strategy of their racist founder, Margaret Sanger, to the letter. Planed Parenthood is saying, “We have our poster boy!

Get him out in front as a lure for their women and men. Get them into our abortion clinics and dismember their children by the millions!”

You say absurd? No Way!

Planned Parenthood’s Valentine cards were sent out to hundreds of thousands of young people in the nation.

Whose face is plainly seen waving to them with a big smile?

Whose endorsement is given to this racist and calloused organization?

Who is used to lure children to give credibility to its hideous plot?

He failed right here:

"I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say ‘now we are going to decide who are people and who are not people.’"

First, he's white.  White people can't talk about anyone else of a different race.  And I would tell you the reason, but I'm going to assume you already know if you're white.  But more than that, race has nothing to do with life and death.  Homey can't relate to Obama.  He ain't Obama.  He wasn't a negro brought up in Kenya, and then schooled is muslim Indonesia, only to come to America seeking out fellow communists and white hating church's.

So why go there?  You can't relate to a sociopath.  To pretend that Obama is not one of the most screwed up people you've ever met is a lie.  He is screwed up.  Don't try to relate.  Just call him out for what he does that's evil.  Which is pretty much everything.

Not A Very Good Source To Begin With...

Submitted by TheReal7Sticks on Fri, 01/21/2011 - 12:33am.

See, this would be like Media Matters trying to run a news site. They would probably have a far-left editor asking Santorum (though I highly doubt he would ever consider being interviewed by a far-leftist) loaded questions like "Do you believe in a woman's abortion rights and that it is necessary to protect them at any length?" or "Do you believe the baby Jesus should have been aborted?" (I'm referencing, of course, to a meaningless line of questioning I read on that CNS rag about if certain congressmen believed the baby Jesus had a right to life at conception. Who do you think is going to say no to that? It's designed as a loaded question that shows the bias of the reporter more than the interviewee). So please spare me of all of those Margaret Sanger conspiracy theories I have read about on right-wing websites for so many years. All you would have to ask about President Obama is how you feel about his unusual support for partial-birth abortion. That alone is a good, solid question about what any average person would believe as unethical or morally wrong. And that's saying something because I'm a secular Jew saying it.

P.S. I thought the point of this website was to combat liberal media bias, not promoting conservative ideology. Wasn't the whole point trying to balance the reporting and get it back to a level of good unbiased journalism?

Wanna talk about rhetoric equals death?

Submitted by GrannyGrump42 on Fri, 01/21/2011 - 8:30am.

"It’s sad that many of these same outlets also failed to report news yesterday of the Philadelphia abortionist charged with the murder of 1 woman and 7 babies born alive and then killed with scissors. It doesn't get more gruesome than that. But that story doesn’t threaten liberal ideology, so I guess it’s just not news."

Oh, it's news. I've seen several MSM reports on the story. And all of them play the same stupid little game. The anchor asks the reporter, "How did this go on so many years?" and the reporter says something about the way the FBI raid brought it all out.

What they all ignore is that the Grand Jury Report devoted 81 of its roughly 300 pages to answering that question, and a recurring theme was "prochoice politics". When the Democrats took control in Pennsylvania, the oversight of abortion mills stopped -- even when complaints came in from women and hospitals. Even some PROCHOICE groups were helping women to complain, and the officials were ignoring them. Because, I guess, they were following the "civil discourse" philosophy of handling abortion matters, which was "If you can't say something nice about an abortionist, don't say anything."

What got the authorities moving was when the local press started covering what the FBI had found during the drug raid, and there was too much outcry to be able to maintain the pretense that all was well.

And we've known that prochoice politics risks women's lives for decades.

Oh -- and this guy moonlighted at a National Abortion Federation member clinic in Delaware. Baby Boy A's mother was handed over to him by that NAF clinic. Doesn't that make them on at least some level accomplices in the murder of Baby Boy A?

(Submitted for your consideration, the Grand Jury Report, which I've read through and have started going through for my blog: http://www.phila.gov/districtattorney/PDFs/GrandJuryWomensMedical.pdf

Gosnell refined and elevated his creepy crimes to an artform, but he was just elaborating on themes that are common in the abortion business.)

The price of a VPS is getting cheaper every day

Submitted by Mypeprome on Fri, 01/21/2011 - 6:43pm.

Hi what's up all, been lurking here for a while and decided to write. Something's just bugging me recently lol. Wow I saw a VPS for less than $5 essentially! So I was browsing the web today and my eyes strayed towards an ad for a VPS server going for $4.95 per month. Now take into account this wasn't shared hosting which I have seen as well for about $1 per month in many places but a full blown Virtual Private Server. It got me thinking whether or not it will be worth it to buy servers now for "serving" anything or if in just a couple of years everything will be running on mainfaimes again. FLashback to the 1950s? When you think about it, before the IBM XT nobody routinely thought they could afford a computer even for their office let alone their home and businesses always grabbed those big mainframes and had dumb terminals running to the big bad boy in a metal cupboard. Today these cheap VPSes are becoming more and more like the dumbterms of yesteryear; while you may be sitting at an intelligent PC you are still just remote connecting to the processing power of the VPS cloud and you might as well just be typing at a dumb console in many cases. Those of you who shell remotely know what I mean. Now consider a few other seemingly random trends such as "google desktop" and "microsoft remote drive" and fast forward into the future where it seems plausible that all your storage and processing might be done outside your office or dwelling with all that control in someone else's hands. In return for that control the user might just get their VPS for free, financed by advertising and the sale of marketing data. Right now $4.95 is as good as it gets and it's without advertising.

Submitted by Alexissss on Sun, 01/23/2011 - 8:17am.

Hi, I'm a newbie here, but I already want to bring all the benefits of me :) So, I want to share my experience with you.. 9 days ago, accidentally, i had found the Mobile Phone TV...and I was so delighted with this application that I decided to talk to you :) I consider myself a bit of a road warrior. I am on and off jets and through airports at least twice, usually 4 times a week. I can catch up on news, watch a Discovery program, check up on the stock market or just find something interesting. The live guide works like cable at home and the connection speed is very good. All in ALL - I RATE A 5 Star program! but I do not want to leave any links here, so you can email me fairyalexiss@gmail.com and i will give you the site of this unusual program :) (but please don't PM me, because it's so difficult to communicate in such kind of way) so, I hope I was helpful to you)) see you in next posts .. sincerely your Alexis.... p.s. English is not my native language, so sorry for any mistakes :)
