Bozell Column: Exploiting the Teen Temptress

By Brent Bozell | December 18, 2010 | 09:17

Brent Bozell's picture

You may have never heard of the 17-year-old actress Taylor Momsen, but she represents everything that’s wrong with pop culture today. At seven, she starred as the adorable Cindy Lou Who in Jim Carrey’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” but there’s nothing adorable in what she’s done lately.

Momsen is a “multiple threat,” matching acting on CW’s smutty teen series “Gossip Girl” with a “music career” with a band accurately titled “The Pretty Reckless.” In July, still aged 16, Momsen's music video for the song “Miss Nothing” featured her in raccoonish eye makeup wearing a white silk bodysuit, fishnet stockings and garters – not exactly your standard high school junior outfit – a child, crawling, standing and lying on her back on a banquet table offering herself figuratively as a morsel for men twice her age.

In September came another video, for the song “Make Me Wanna Die,” where she walked down the street, systematically stripping until she stood in a fiery cemetery in her underwear and stockings. She promised in the lyrics she would steal and die for her beloved.

Then in October, Momsen – realize, still legally a child – appeared on the cover of the hard-rock magazine Revolver wearing a skimpy black camisole, black panties, and the requisite garters and stockings – but this time, she was carrying a Glock pistol and a sawed-off shotgun. The copy next to her promised verbiage on this “pretty reckless firestarter’s appetite for destruction!”

Also in October, Momsen performed with her band in New York and upped the ante for the crowd, opening her shirt and exposing her breasts ("covered" by pasties). The Hollywood Gossip website underlined that “This was no invasion of the Gossip Girl star's privacy by paparazzi. Taylor Momsen made sure concert-goers saw Taylor Momsen topless on stage. Insane.”

It’s either insane – or the act of giving the envelope-pushers exactly what they want. She also keeps celebrity gossips buzzing by joking she had sex with a priest; that “her best friend is her vibrator"; that she set her neutered dog’s testicles on fire as a protest against men; and that she started a feud with Miley Cyrus and her repressive “bubblegum (expletive),” saying she never wanted to be “Miley f—ing Cyrus.” Momsen blames her parents for ruining her life, that she never had a childhood and started working as a model and actress at age two.

Momsen may be extreme, but the trend is well-established – the marketing of teenaged temptresses for much older men. Oh, let’s stop the niceties. It’s not “teenaged” anything. These are young girls. Children. And it’s the glorification of statutory rape.

Earlier this year, we had the stars of the teen show “Glee” prancing around in underwear and sucking on lollipops for GQ magazine. A “Glee” scene featured two cheerleaders making out in bed in their cheerleader outfits. Why must Hollywood turn high-school girls into fantasies for men of all ages? More importantly, what do teenagers learn about sexuality from our brazen popular culture? The Parents Television Council recently started at the top of this sleazy mountain, studying sexuality in all scripted programs in Nielsen's top 25 for viewers aged 12 to 17 (during the 2009-2010 season) in two hot ratings periods, the first two weeks of the November 2009 “sweeps” period and the comparable first two weeks of the May 2010 “sweeps.”

That would include dramas like “Desperate Housewives” as well as comedies like “Two and a Half Men.” Fox's programming aimed straight at teenagers was heavily represented: not only “Glee,” but “The Simpsons” and the Seth MacFarlane cartoons “Family Guy,” “American Dad,” and “The Cleveland Show.”

What the PTC found matches the teen-temptress trend, and it’s a factoid that should rattle you: Underage female characters are shown participating in a higher percentage of sexual action than adult females. While almost 70 percent of sexy scenes with adult females involved verbal sexual references, 47 percent of the sexy scenes with teenagers implied nudity, implied intercourse, or erotic touching, kissing, or dancing. And then there’s this: 98 percent of the sexual incidents involving underage female characters occurred with partners with whom they did not have any form of committed relationship. In other words, just raw, physical sex.

The depictions of underaged sexual activity are more explicit than those featuring adults and yet, 75 percent of these hit shows with sexualized underage female characters did not have an S-descriptor on screen to warn parents of sexual content, thus nothing tripped the alleged parental “protection” of V-chip technology. This proves for the thousandth time what a joke it is.

Taylor Momsen shouldn’t just blame her parents for her horrid behavior. The supposedly “feminist” entertainment industry that can’t wait until adulthood to exploit females for money needs also to be condemned. There’s a whole lot of pimping going on.

Cable company lies too

Submitted by legacyrepublican on Sat, 12/18/2010 - 9:57am.

I have had to downgrade my account with the cable company several times even though they tell me that my 'parental control' will stop the content I want to stop.

I remember one night I couldn't sleep I was surfing the channels looking for something dull to help me go to sleep and saw a silly title with 'clever twist' that I didn't get right off the bat. So I clicked on it. It was not rated. It was not even properly labled.

It turned out that it was soft core, full nudity, lots of love making porn. And nothing on my unit's parental controls would have even prevented my children from seeing it if they wanted.

Over the years, I have had the cable company do free upgrades and upon checking, I ask them to downgrade it again, because I find other shows, movies, programs that have exactly the same problem.

It may not be your girls, but out there others who think because they have dress less slutty than they see these celebrities dress, they are o.k., when really they are dressing like sluts.

Some of us work hard to promote standards for our children, but as society as a whole is increasingly sexual and crude, it becomes harder and harder.

I hate to say it, but once

Submitted by Bruzilla on Sat, 12/18/2010 - 11:22am.

I hate to say it, but once again we see folks on our side of the fence trying to have things both ways.  Mr. Bozell, if Glee offends you... don't watch it (I've never seen it and I'm doing just fine).  I doubt you spend much time in the Death Rock magazine section at Borders, but if you do, and you don't like the cover of that music rag, don't buy it.

It amazes me how we've been fighting tooth and nail to protect guys like Rush and Sean from being shutdown by people like Sharpton who claim to be offended, and we tell them if they don't want to be offended... change the station!  Then we get folks like Mr. Bozell who, when they get offended, start whining just like the Sharptons of the World and want whatever offends them stopped.

It comes down to the "what I like is fine, but your stuff should be banned" debate.  Frankly Mr. Bozell, you're not helping things.

This is a battle that's been going on since Elvis Presley stepped on stage the first time, and to the best of my knowledge, except for being stuck with Progressives, the country hasn't slipped into Hell yet.

So if there's a billboard that offends you, don't watch it.  Ok.  *cars go off the road as people close their eyes*.

So if an "accidental" exposed breast offends you, don't watch it.  Ok.  *people end up turning off family-watched Super Bowls where people didn't expect it*.

Book covers offensive? Don't look at it.. Ok.  *Moving away from some vulgar best-seller that is placed right in front of you at Books-A-Million as you are walking in while you are trying to get to the children's section so you can read to your daughter*

Do you see my point? Core argument is moot now.  They bring the offenses up where people don't expect them now.  You expect them not to watch it, but the safe haven keeps shrinking everywhere.  Sure we can do what we can and NOT look at it. but they're giving us no escape route nowadays.

I'm definitely not a social conservative, then again I don't know if I'm really a social liberal either. Social Libertarian is probably more like it. I see quite a bit of raunchy garbage on TV and the Internet. When I see something I don't like, I just change the channel. As far as these teens doing what they do, you're not going to undo any of this. The proverbial Genie is out of the bottle and good luck trying to put it back. I do believe all this gratuitous sexual, homosexual, extramarital stuff is why Muslims consider us The Great Satan. Personally, I'd rather people watch what they want. If I don't like it, I don't have to participate. I don't need the Taliban regulating me. Ratings do that just fine.

Where is Mr. Bozell calling for censorship?

You and the rest of the posters who whine "just change the channel" and compare Mr. Bozell and the others to the Taliban will fight and die for the ability of broadcasters to air crap, but then get very angry when people react to it with criticism like Mr. Bozell's.  If the boradcaster has the freedom to air garbage as was shown, Mr. Bozell can criticize it with his pen.

As long as he isn't calling for censorship...what's the problem?

We are complaining about political censorship. That needs to be eliinated 100%, or close to it.

On the other hand, indecency is a different story, particularly when children are involved.

And at some point, changing the channel doesn't help, when you want entertainment. Prurient stuff will get you the ratings, and soon everything has it. Plus the writers seem to want it.

Personally, my solution is not to watch television at all. But not too many people are willing to do that.

Okay, so what is "indecent"?

Submitted by Bruzilla on Sat, 12/18/2010 - 1:22pm.

Okay, so what is "indecent"?  If we went by my great-grandparents' definition of indecent, men walking about outside without hats and women wearing dresses that showed anything above the ankles would be indecent.  How about my grandparents' view, women showing anything above the knee is indecent?  How about my parents', where showing couples sleeping the same bed was indecent? What is indecent or decent changes from generation to generation, so why should your, or Mr. Bozell's, interpretation of decency be the standard?

I find a lot of what the youth are listening and watching indecent, crude, vulgar, and crass, but I have to remember that my parents found most of what I listened to and watched  indecent, crude, vulgar, and crass.  I'm sure when the youth of today become my age, they'll find what their kids are listening to and watching indecent, crude, vulgar, and crass, and hopefully they'll do just what numerous generations of their family line have done... change the channel!!

Your argument is flawed

Submitted by Phryj1 on Sat, 12/18/2010 - 5:36pm.

You seem to be impying that there is no line that society's gradually relaxing standards shouldn't cross. Isn't there a certain point where it goes too far? While previous generations had draconian standards, that doesn't mean that future generations shouldn't have any stadards at all. And, really, there isn't much lower to go at this point. Teenagers are overly sexualized, sex is overly casualized, you will not find any characters on TV or film that actually desire to fall in love and get married, just folks looking to get laid. And yet, you apparently have no problem with the envelope being pushed even further as time goes on. Try to think about exactly what that would mean. Where else are they going to go? There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

Submitted by Unsane on Sat, 12/18/2010 - 8:53pm.

Bruzilla, you are not a conservative.  So shove it.

Second, I hate to break your heart, but if other people have the right to put forth crappy, trashy pop culture, Mr. Bozell has the right to comment on it.  If you are demanding he shut up, at least have the intellectual consistency to call for the censorship of whatever he is commenting on.

P.S. I can't recall a single time when Mr. Bozell called for censorship.  He is commenting on pop culture trends, which he has the freedom to do.

Honest political debate is

Submitted by ozarkian on Sun, 12/19/2010 - 4:34pm.

Honest political debate is not in the same category as the exploitation of young girls.

Also: Every society must has limits. We would not show the degradation of blacks or any other ethnic group for pleasure on TV because we have a national conscience. It cheapens the First Amendment to use it to protect commercialized sensationalism, and yes, it does move the bar of acceptability. It's the coarsening of culture and defining deviancy down. Who in the 50's, let alone the 1700's, would have thought some would take advantage of free speech by creating torture porn for monetary gain?

We need to protect free speech by using it responsibily. To those who say "whose version of responsibility," see example above. Some taboos are necessary to keep us civilized, and pushing the limit  for the sake of "entertainment" contributes to lack of respect for the boundaries of others and  perhaps ultimately to the breakdown of our civilization.

The only thing about this little ho that upsets the left is the fact that she was allowed to handle those firearms!  My God, what parent would allow their slutty little ho to touch a gun while wearing  her underwear on the cover of a magazine?

For the record, I've never even heard of this little tramp until now.  Give her a few more years and she will probably look great on the cover of Playboy, which I only buy for the articles, of course.

Why are you now LYING to us 24enak Idiot troll?

Submitted by The Vet on Sun, 12/19/2010 - 11:47am.

24enak LIE: Carbon dioxide is the by product of internal combustion engines. Duh.

CO2 is one of the 2 main products in the exhaust gas of a internal combustion engine. Water is the other. (source) CO2 is not a BYproduct. CO is a byproduct when the fuel does not burn correctly. (same source)http://www.ehow.com/list_7469032_types-exhaust-gas.html

byproduct 2: a secondary and sometimes unexpected or unintended result

CO is an unwanted byproduct as it comes from an engine not working efficiently. YOU LIE.

24enak STUPID: Carbon monoxide is produce when cars run in an enclosed space, but only after the carbon dioxide has bonded with the oxygen in that enclosed space.

Did everyone catch that? CO is produced in the garage itself, not the internal combustion engine.

...only after the carbon dioxide has bonded with the oxygen in that enclosed space.

So Carbon Dioxide which is one carbon atom and 2 oxygen atams bond with another oxygen atom thus creating CO which is one carbon atom and one oxygen atom. So the other 2 oxygen atoms must be consumed in the process huh Stupid? Normally it takes something like fusion or fission to completely obliterate an atom but whatever, now STUPID says it happens in your garage.

How did you do that Supid? Drag an olympic size swimming pool filled with Stupid in here?

24enak: Carbon dioxide turns into carbon monoxide when there is a lack of oxygen.

Oh is that how it happens Stupid? We all thought is was the internal combustion engine that has used up most of the oxygen in the garage and now does not have enough to create CO2 and creates CO instead.

  • Carbon monoxide is produced from the partial oxidation of carbon-containing compounds; it forms when there is not enough oxygen to produce carbon dioxide (CO2), such as when operating a stove or an internal combustion engine in an enclosed space. - wikipedia

But whatever Stupid, the Carbon Dioxide gets lonely in the garage and magically drops an atom just cuz. That's why. Cuz.

Here is the sad part. 24enak says all this AFTER he looked it up and even linked to something that was correct. Wow, the level of Stupid is this troll is truly EPIC.

His original ---

"CO2 is a dangerous gas, if you don't believe go sit in your running vehicle in the garage for a couple of hours."

Carbon Monixide is a byproduct of an inefficient combustion engine. The reason it is so deadly in a confined space - An engine normally takes in oxygen and creates Carbon Dioxide and Water vapor. An engine will quickly use up most of the oxygen in a confined space and create Carbon Monoxide in greater amounts until all the oxygen is completely used up. What does Stupid 24enak say?

Carbon dioxide is the by product of internal combustion engines.                                                                                                                                                           .

Carbon monoxide is produce when cars run in an enclosed space, but only after the carbon dioxide has bonded with the oxygen in that enclosed space.

Yeppers. Carbon Dioxide bonds with oxygen and is a BYproduct of the internal combustion engine and kills you in a running vehicle in you garage.

I'm a dad with two teenaged girls

Submitted by KC Mulville on Sat, 12/18/2010 - 2:12pm.

What bothers me is that there are no alternatives for girls.

I also have two sons, both older than the girls. At least the boys had sports. They both played different sports (baseball, basketball, soccer, etc.) and I encouraged it ... precisely because sports promote the kind of values I want to see in my boys. They promote competitiveness without hatred, striving for excellence, attention to detail, respect, teamwork, shared sacrifice for a common goal, etc.

What do girls have? My older daughter took up dance at an early age, and that promotes many of the same values as sports. But it also requires us to buy flimsy costumes, and on the days of her recitals, she's got more paint on her than a new barn. And she isn't dancing to Swan Lake; the lyrics in the songs, especially hip-hop, are aggressively sexual (and in my opinion sexist).

Now, go on TV to see role models for both girls and boys. Go to that bastion of family values, The Disney Channel. OK, let's skip over the shows that push aggressive sexuality and incessantly smart-ass conversation. Skip over it. Skip over that one. Skip over this one. Skip over ... skip over...

... what's left? Where are the shows that don't push aggressive sexuality and smart-ass conversation? There aren't any. Oh, wait, there are a couple "sensitive" shows that explore the anguished decision to have an abortion. Forgive me, I forgot about those. Or shows that lecture kids not to bully all the gay kids, and that we should celebrate all sexuality!

I'll be glad to change the channel. Where to?

No alternatives for girls?

Submitted by Chaitealover on Mon, 12/20/2010 - 12:29am.

There have been girls involved in competitive sports for years. I played field hockey back in the 50s, my daughter ran on both school and club track teams 40 years ago, her now 21 year old daughter played softball from the time she was 8 until jr high. Title IX assured funding for girls programs in schools in 1972.  Girls play tennis, volleyball, softball, basketball, soccer, and more sports than I have time to list here. Today the UCONN Women's basketball won their 88th straight game, they wouldn't have had the talent to do that if they hadn't started playing in High School, or maybe even jr. high.

There are all sorts of sports available for your daughters, but not everyone is interested in playing sports. If they're not interested, they're not interested. There's no one to blame not even the junk on TV.
