Bozell Column: The Diseases of Pornography
Derrick Burts, 24, started working as a porn-film actor in June. By October, he'd contracted the HIV virus. The AP story on Burts contained this jaw-dropping sentence: “He said he began to have doubts about the business after contracting chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes in his first month of work, but was convinced to keep working.”
Burts claimed "I wasn't stupid or oblivious, I knew what was out there. But it's not something you think about when they fill your head" with lucrative offers and promises that the work is safe. Lured into the porn world with the promise that he looked like money, Burts concluded his greed was unwise: "Making $10,000 or $15,000 for porn isn't worth your life."
Michael Weinstein, head of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, took up the Burts case. While he insisted his group isn't anti-porn, “we are astounded that the multi-billion-dollar film industry and its fig leaf of a clinic could not even get it together six weeks after his first HIV-positive test to link [Burts] to appropriate follow-up medical care."
Lawyers for the porn industry's clinic, the Adult Industry Medical Health Foundation, which performed the HIV test on Burts, insisted any claim he was not properly treated is “not truthful and self-serving.” But the California Department of Public Health just denied its application to operate. Once again, the porn industry looks shady.
Burts says the clinic told him he contracted the HIV virus at a gay porn shoot in Florida, but the clinic told the press that he must have become infected in his personal life. Translation: Who are you going to trust, a porn star? Or the porn industry? This evolving story comes six years after up to 14 porn actors tested HIV-positive, forcing several porn companies to close.
Porn moguls obviously want the "talent" to feel safe, but they don't want to film scenes with condoms – for monetary reasons. The pornographers at Vivid Entertainment said when they became a mandatory-condom company for nearly seven years, they saw their sales drop nearly 20 percent.
Pornography isn't just unhealthy for our culture; it's unhealthy for the “talent” that stars in these films, with the endless carousel of sex partners. It should be only a matter of time before the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (or their California equivalent) starts investigating – unless, of course, government officials are too afraid of appearing like squelchers of a Howard Stern version of “freedom of speech.”
It's ironic that our news media are such evangelists for "safe sex" with condoms, and very critical of anyone who's anti-condom as a menace to society, but they haven't forced that Latex gospel on the porn industry, despite the obvious threat of fatal sexually-transmitted diseases between strangers on the set.
Then there's the gay-porn industry – which as a rule requires condoms in films, but doesn't even HIV-test their stars. Without much irony, Jay Barmann of the San Francisco blog SFist reported “The HIV status of gay porn performers is a particular taboo subject, with a kind of don't-ask-don't-tell attitude proliferating in the industry, which mostly tries to keep performers safe by requiring condom use and which fears bad publicity from performers revealing their statuses.”
In response to this environment, the porn company Treasure Island Media recently took the shocking step of promoting a gay couple with one HIV-negative and one HIV-positive partner having “unprotected” sex as "role models." Paul Morris, the company’s owner, spoke of demolishing "the HIV-positive closet" and pledged "We will not allow reactionary individuals and organizations to dictate our behavior.” HIV and AIDS are “more or less manageable,” he said. “The real battle is against prejudice, ignorance and unfounded and useless fear.”
Barmann, no anti-porn “prude,” was shocked for the public health and for the rights of actors. “Say what he will about battling prejudice and fear, Morris stands to benefit financially from the unprotected sex his performers agree to have, and he is nonetheless an employer who knowingly puts his workers in harm's way.”
Our media just found it wildly controversial that the Pope might hypothetically suggest a male prostitute using a condom may be trying to show a health concern for others. But somehow, there is no controversy or debate when secular sexual progressives fail to crusade against pornographers on something so contrary to their own condom-promoting “safe sex” philosophy. The old AIDS slogan was “Silence equals death.” Who will speak out before the next greedy Derrick Burts gets infected?
Just how stupid are the Derricks of this world to get involved in death-trap industries like this?

Shawn,
But I am sure that you are aware that HIV is not the only STDs. STDs are rampant in the porn industry. Are you going to tell me that the porn industry is clearner than the city of New York where 1 in 5 New Yorkers has an STD? c'mon Shawn, wishful thinking on your part.
Morally and physically, pornography is a sociatel disease which destroys your soul and body.
Why do you think there are countless of women AND men who come out of that industry and start focus groups, Christian groups, etc which attempt to stop others from joining this industry?
This industry plays on the most animalistic instincts of human beings. It makes us animals.
I can never undestand why and how anyone can defend such an evil, depraved industry which abuses children, women and men.

"Derrick Burts, 24, started working as a porn-film actor in June. By October, he'd contracted the HIV virus."
One could argue "Burts moved to California in June. By October he had HIV. Stay safe. Don't move there." I read this story on another site and he was a for-hire callboy off camera and they showed proof with his ad "for hire".
"Burts says the clinic told him he contracted the HIV virus at a gay porn shoot in Florida"
I've had to tell people they test positive for HIV since 1985, and this is a lie. The LA Times article said every straight scene he performed in was un-safe (no condom) and he alone knows what he did in private. And this "gay porn shoot" was strictly condom. And you expect me to believe a "clinic" would say "Ah-hah!" ?????

'Free Love' isn't free...

To: the porn industry:
It's producers, directors, actors, performers and even its patrons:
Are you finding (whatever public statements you may make to the contrary) producing, using or otherwise supporting pornography just isn't leading to the happy life of freedom and peace that you imagined it would be? Are you struggling with addiction to sleaze? Shackled into an addictive dependency on this stuff, as strong as for any chemical stimulant or drug? Are you contracting various diseases, because the porn industry tricked you into thinking you could engage in this kind of behavior without any consequence to yourselves or your families?
I've got a way to fix this. I can tell you how to fix it all and return to a life of actual happiness, rather than the false pleasures the porn industry used to hook you. There is a way. A way to free yourself, a way to escape.
But you're not gonna like it. I'm tellin' you right now, you're NOT gonna like it.
You have to abstain. No more excuses, no more rationalizing. You have to give it up - totally, completely and permanently. You'll have to give up looking at porn of any kind. This includes text, images, movies, songs, music, websites. You must not view them. You must not buy them. You must leave them completely and forever untouched.
And you have to live a chaste life. That doesn't mean that you have to give up sex. No, not nearly that drastic. But it does mean that from now on and for the rest of your life, you must have no sexual intercourse with anyone except your husband or wife to whom you are legally married.
This means no fooling around before marriage. No orgies, no raves, no 'swing' gatherings, or premarital sex of any kind. And after marriage, you must remain absolutely faithful to your spouse. This means no cheating, no adultery, no 'extramarital relationships' of any kind, either in reality or in cyber-space.
You must forever abandon anything that triggers sexual arousal in you beyond what you and your spouse may share with each other in the privacy of your homes. Anything else must be abandoned.
It will not be easy. You'll be mocked. You'll be sneered at. You'll be called a 'prude' or a 'god-boy' or a 'eunuch' or any one of things from a very long and cruel list. Everyone who knows you're abstaining will suddenly launch into all kinds of schemes to try and drag you back into the porn lifestyle. And it will be relentless. They will not 'respect your choice', they will feel threatened by it and do everything they can to make you ashamed or embarrassed. But you must endure it. You must continue to abstain, no matter how much you are attacked, no matter how much it seems to hurt, no matter how difficult it seems to be.
At first it will seem unimaginably hard. It may even seem impossible. But it will get better. It will get easier. And if you can endure it, you'll find yourself enjoying life in ways you thought you'd forgotten about long ago.
If everyone does this it will improve your lives and bring you true peace and happiness. It will have the added benefit of putting the porn industry out of business forever. Because without money, they won't exist.
I'm sure the above steps sound like the pipe-dreams of a dewy eyed idealist to many. 'People just can't help themselves!' some might say. 'We have needs!' 'That's not realistic!'
See? I told you that you wouldn't like it.
But that's what you have to do. Otherwise, things will only get worse for you. And it will keep getting worse, and worse until it finally reaches a point where it simply can't get any worse.
Then what?
What about people

Shawn, like the porn stars who enter porn voluntarily, this does relate to the other examples I showed. The border smugglers are paid by people voluntarily who want to come across the border. This makes them trusting and vurnerable. The slave traders again seduce young women into buying an idea of safe haven and jobs but then abuse them. Porn stars voluntarily enter the profession and find there are consequences such as STD's. There are consequences for all of our decisions and actions. So often self absorbed individuals cannot see beyond immediate gratification like a big paycheck.
I am not attacking you just your naive and slanted view of this issue you have defended for some time. On this issue, we will never agree.

Sorry this is a total apples and oranges comparision. The border smugglers are bringing in people that are volunarility doing something ILLEGAL. After these women are smuggled in, they are beaten and have their passports taken from them and their lives threatened.
Porn Stars know the risk that associated with the legal profession they are entering and the risks and some enjoy doing what they do. Huge difference.

Your last post is an example of why I seldom reply to you. Your post is the issue I was referring to in my earlier post. You want strawman arguments for vs, legality, illegality, morality, immorality, voluntary, coerced. . As Bru tried to so politely remind you, I dealt with the victims and the consequences of those activities that you describe as choices, rights, blah blah blah. I have an entirely different perspective on this issue from you. I see it from the devasting effects to those individuals involved, be they voluntary or coerced.
On a more personal note, one of my high school friends was a gay porn star in Hollywood. I do not recall his screen name and I never saw any of his work but I did see the sadness, shame, and devastating affects to him he himself attributed to his "profession". He died of Aids at the age of 44.

Additionally, just because something is Legal it doesn't make it moral, Right, Truth. Legal doesn't not equate to moral, can you at least agree to this point? Be ready to debate some very heavy stuff if you disagree. Legal should be moral, but in a society where our moral compass has been turned upside down, Legal is equaling less and less morality.

Your logic, when it comes to pornography, is quite....hmmmm....scary, shall we say.
Drugs bring food to the table of families, so does slavery, so does snuff videos/pictures.
THE ENDS NEVER JUSTIFY THE MEANS!!!!
Our Souls are 100% more important than our bodily needs.
on another point....why the heck is a 2 years old signature line all of a sudden popping up at the bottom of my posts!!!!! I do not see it here where i type my post, why does it show up when I hit "save"?!!!! NB?! ANYONE?!

Shawn,
WOW that girl from GLEE is one ugly looking kid. YUCK! Thanks for the nightmares Shawn!
Anyway, this is a very serious subject and pornography is one of the things that is destroying our nation, our culture.
Women are objectified, sex is made the most important thing in a relationship. 10 to 17 year olds are the number one users of pornography. They grow up with a distorted and sick view of sexuality.
Western culture is being torn apart thanks to pornography.
Putting food on the table doesn't justify how we do it. If it can't be done morally, it should not be done at all. The ends never justify the means.
Have you seen Marvels

Avengers on Disney XD? Its pretty good. I also have not had the chance to check out Batman and the Red Hood that you recommended yet.
The girl from Glee is not very pretty, but her voice is like a young Streisand. There are a few other babes on that show though, but she has the best voice.

No, I have not seen Avengers on Disney XD. The Batman I recommend is pretty good, it is the story of the second Robin. I saw the other night on Disney a young Justice League. It was pretty good. They are sons, apprentices of Superman, Batman, Aquaman, etc, etc.
Have you been keeping up with Smallville? Last night's episode was pretty good. I think the show is going out with a bang. They have stopped the ridiculous love story and diviing into the DC Universe stories.

Shawn, I am not the one
Submitted by Liberallies on Sat, 12/11/2010 - 10:37pm.
Shawn,
I am not the one running from the debate. I guess you know what I will bring.
1) Underage women used in the porn industry.
2) The porn industry involved in the sex slave trade
3) The devastating effects that pornography has on marriages and how boys and men see and act towards women.
4) The devastating effects pornography has on women. Pornography has been linked to countless rapes.
5) The porn industry thrives on the heaviest users of porn, 10 to 17 year old boys!
6) Sons and daughters finding their father's and sometimes their mother's computers filled with pornography and losing ALL respect for his/her mother, father, parents. Destruction of family.
7) The porn industry using as a drug our most animalistic instinct against us and making us behave like animals and not like human beings.
Your come backs to all these....
"It is a choice...", "It brings money to our economy..."
1) It is rarely a choice when a woman is raped by a sex starved men who just spent countless of hours watching pornography
2) Money is FAR from the only thing to live for. Money, in fact, should not be something that we live for.

Shawn, Maybe you can
Submitted by Liberallies on Sat, 12/11/2010 - 11:48pm.
Shawn,
Maybe you can explain this.
ALL scientific data, all polling, all statistics prove that pornography is devastating to relationships, marriages. These also show that the heaviest users of pornography are children. These also show that the porn industry is heavily involved in the drug trade, in sex slave trade, in using underage girls and passing them as adults. It also shows that the porn industry benefits, money wise that is, neither the actors, actresses or those who watch it.
What scientifc evidence do you have that shows that pornography is good for society? Saying that it is a supposed choice, saying that it benefits the economy are neither scientific evidence nor moral arguments.
Why do you defend this industry so much? what is it about it that you deem of such good quality?
Why if it is ok to watch and use pornography do the vast majority of users hide it from friends, family, and more importantly from their children?
Shawn, if it is good and ok to watch pornography, why don't you let your children see you watching it? hmmm....
I know what you'll bring too

Submitted by DaMama on Sat, 12/11/2010 - 4:43pm.
Shawn is a troll. He obviously knows nothing of the devastation that porn brings to everyone involved, whether it is the "actors", those who view it or those who are victims of those who view it.
I have never seen a marriage that benefited from porn. I have never seen a child want to grow up to be a porn star. I've never seen a man put his porn mags on the coffee table for all to see. There is still a very small amount of shame in this society today, and people who are involved in this industry know it very well.
I have seen marriages, relationships between parent and child, careers and ministries devastated by porn. It serves no good purpose. It never has and it never will.
And, if you study the effectiveness of condoms, they are hardly reliable. The HIV virus is so small, it can pass through many brands of latex condoms. And I have 2 children that were the result of condom use, so I wouldn't trust my life with a small sheath of latex.

I like you. You get on my nerves terribly sometimes when it seems that you're being willfully obtuse, and especially when you needle, but I always come back to liking you. Dammit..
Whenever I've addressed you on this subject it's been to try to explain the destructiveness of porn and prostitution from a woman's/mother's perspective. You brush right on by it and talk about free will as if it's the be-all, end-all, excuse-all for everything. It's not.
Pornography is an attempt to take sex out of the context of reality and make it pure fantasy. Prostitution is an attempt to take sex out of the context of relationship and make it purely self-serving.
Both are psychologically unhealthy because it is an attempt to remove oneself from reality, and relationships with other people.
Prima facie evidence that pornography is harmful: It's addictive. No one ever gets addicted to carrots, spinach, giving to charity, or reading the Bible.
Ummm... actually...

Porn actresses have free will and if they get a disease, it is their own decision and sad as it may be, they have to take responsiblity or what they did and nobody forced them to do anything.

There are consequences for peoples actions, decisions, often brought on by the actions of others as well.
Some people sit in their lazy-boy in the comfort and privacy of their own home, sipping a scotch and enjoy the depravity depicted on film by "actors". A perspective distant and detatched.
As Liberalies and I have been trying to tell you, legal or not, voluntary or not, there is devasting harm done to the people involved. Some of us have been "behind the curtain" dealing with the bloody aftermath. Brutely raped children, prostitutes addicted to drugs as a way of anesthezing from the emotional damage done by their "profession". 75% of all prostitutes were sexually abused as children. Is it acceptable to take advantage of damaged individuals to promise them a way to "make a living" in the same manner they suffered "damage"? There are hundreds of studies done and statistics to show that the damage done to real people, not "actors". Too numerous to link here but I would ask that you take the time to review them yourself.
I have been involved with people who "make a living" from pornography and prostitution. That depraved life style takes its toll on those involved as well as others. Most of those "others" are children. The horror stories I could tell you about the brutal assaults of these women and young boys and girls involved would not be appropriate here in this type of forum.
All I have tried to do on this thread is to give you opportunity, from my perspective, professional experiences, to consider this profession from another view. Not just the one in front of the tv.To do that would require looking at a situation or people from outside of yourself, your needs, your wants. Emotional detatchment is a way of avoiding some unpleasant truths and consistent denial of reality and consequences. This denial and your strawman arguments are generally why you get such negative replies on this issue from the majority of posters at NB. You have mentioned in several posts that I seldom reply to your posts. That is accurate and due to your consistent support of pornography and prostitution. After this exchange, I will return to "no reply" mode.
I do not believe my disagreements with you have been insulting. I am simply respectfully, again, asking you to look at this profession from another point of view, another reality, not in front of the screen but "behind the curtain". My professional experiences being called silly or strawman arguments were offensive. When you minimize the story of a 10 yr old raped by her "aroused" uncle after watching porn, and know this child had such damage that required a hysterectomy, to call that consequence a "silly" argument does insult my profession and my entire career. That child is only one example but other cases, even more devastating, are not appropriate for this forum. I only ask that you respectfully consider that there are those of us at NB that have real experiences with the aftermath of these professions. To readily dismiss those experiences as "strawman" arguments is offensive and lacks intellectual discourse.
I am not offended with unintentional mispelling of cajun2 so, knowing many posters use these hand held devices, I take no offense at being referred to as c2.
Thank you Cajun

Respectful debate is all I ask for. You also accused me of using stawmans too so I guess that makes us even.
"I do not believe my disagreements with you have been insulting"I guess, calling me Nwahs and and adolescent is friendly? lol, thats okay I was kind of snarky as well ;-)
As I stated in another post, I have online friended a few actresses and few women that give friendship for a living and they don't paint a super rosy picture, but they enjoy what they do and not every case is like the ones that you have seen.
As far was LL goes. Him and I have debated this countless time, and I figure its not worth another go around.
I would like to debate this further with you and I promise to not be snarky if you do the same, but If this is the last reply from you, then thank you for your response. You have a good day.

1. People are free to make their own choices. As long as force or fraud is not involved, they are solely responsible. Some of those choices may be harmful to the individual, but we must recognize that the individual is free to make decisions for himself. I think this individual should sue if information that he was going to be exposed to an HIV-positive person was kept from him.
2. There is no such thing as greed. "Greed" is just a tool of the wealth-envy crowd.

Three women walk into a bar, a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead. They sit at a table and there is an amazed satchperv. Satch says" hey, ladies, can I buy you a drink? The ladies say, sure satch, we are out on the town for fun anyway, want to join us?
Satch says, "sure, what you ladies got in mind?'. The brunette says, oh you'll see but first, which of these do you like best?....the brunette pulls out Walther PPK .38 (wow nice grip),,, the blonde pulls out a Beretta 9mm, and the redhead has a brand new Glock SF .45. Come on satch...which do you like best? Can't start the fun til we know which you prefer. PICK ONE SATCH!
no force, no fraud.....your choice.
