Brent Bozell Reacts to Keith Olbermann's Suspension from MSNBC

By Brent Bozell | November 05, 2010 | 16:33

Brent Bozell's picture

Editor's Note: MRC President Brent Bozell issued the following statement in reaction to news that MSNBC had suspended Countdown host Keith Olbermann "indefinitely" for donating to three Democratic candidates in violation of NBC's policy. In October, Olbermann had blasted political donations from Fox News owner News Corp, slamming Fox as "a media outlet that has now put its money where everybody has known its mouth has always been."

Keith Olbermann is officially the Worst Hypocrite in the World. He rails about a ‘national cable news outlet’ that ‘starts to donate to partisan groups of one party,’ then does exactly that.

But it begs a bigger questions: why did it take NBC so long? This man has been using his perch as a newsman at MSNBC to promote a radical left-wing and hate-filled agenda for years. And they fire him over three contributions? NBC needs to review its own policies.”

"But it begs a bigger questions: why did it take NBC so long?"

My sentiments exactly.  This is where NBC draws the line?  K.O. is a foul-mouthed lout who doesn't add anything to the public political debate.  If he were a conservative behaving in the same manner, he would have been canned years ago, regardless which network chose to pay him.  For all of the ragging on FOX News, there is nobody on that network that behaves as K.O. does--nobody.

The writing was on the wall when they stopped him from doing his 'Worst Person in the World' segment.  He made up a phoney excuse to cover his butt, but now the truth comes out.  His bosses were looking for an excuse to dump him and they used a weak pretext to do it.  Odorman's show amounted to a Democrat donation everytime it was on.  The fact that he was fired for also giving them money is a joke.

I don't like Olberdumb, but i really don't care about his donations, we all know that he's a biased, obnoxious uberprogressive lib.

If he violated the ethics clause of his contract, he should be punished.

The thing i see missing repeatedly is the apples-to-apples comparisons.

If you say News Corp donates to candidates, you don't compare that with MSNBC or some broadcaster, you compare it to GE.  So, does GE give money to political candidates?  Have corporate interests?  Push agendas?

There's the real comparison.  And Olberdumb was either too dumb to see it, or too dishonest to make it.

Olbermann donates...Hannity donates...Big deal

Submitted by Jer on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 6:23pm.

You're right.  Maddow, Hannity, Schultz, O'Reilly, Olbermann, etc. aren't "newsmen" [as Bozell called KO in his press release].  These people are political talking heads--opinion peddlers and biased as hell.  Hannity has been a human ATM for Republican candidates and O'Reilly in the past has urged his audience to vote for specifically named Republicans running for office.  [Other than it putting the lie to O'Reilly's neutrality claim...so what!]

It will, however, be interesting to see how MSNBC reacts, if at all, to the revelation that Scarborough has donated to a Republican candidate while in the employ of the network.

I haven't seen anything

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 10:29pm.

I haven't seen anything specifically from News Corp (Fox's owner) but I have seen in a couple of articles about this story that News Corp's policy DOES allow personal donations.

Rachel Maddow,  on her show tonight, was waxing indignant about Hannity, without metntioning News Corps' policy.  Not to mention the fact that Hannity and BOR are "talk show hosts" and MSNBC casts Olbermann as an "anchor" (Read: News reporter).

But liberals in high dudgeon never let little things like facts get in their way.

Submitted by Jer on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 8:47pm.

Here is another source:

Though O'Reilly has stated that he does not endorse politicians for office, on the September 24, 2005 edition of The O'Reilly Factor, he advised his viewers to vote for Republican Doug Forrester in the 2005 New Jersey gubernatorial election, suggesting that Jon Corzine, a Democrat, would not be as tough on child molesters.. O'Reilly also urged his listeners on The Radio Factor to vote against Democratic Senator Tom Daschle in the 2004 Senate election.  In 2003, O'Reilly also urged his viewers on television and his listeners on the radio in California to vote for Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 2003 California gubernatorial election. Two years later, on the day of the citizen initiatives elections in California, as well as the gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, he urged his listeners to vote for the Republican governor's proposals on the ballot.

Okay, we are just really not on the same page. To cut to the chase, I thought you would be telling me how O'Reilly gave biased commentary during a news segment, but everything you have given me has been in an analyst/editorial capacity...and if it is not in an analyst position as you have noted here, there are no dates or references for me to look up to get any other context on this.

I get what your thoughts are on O'Reilly though. You don't like the guy. You think he's a big fake. If it makes you feel any better...I feel like he says some pro-liberal things many times as well, and it's not like I don't have some criticisms of him. Mainly, that he interrupts people all the time.

There. Common ground. And that's about the best we are gonna do, Jer. We are just coming at this from two entirely different vantage points -- and I don't mean liberal vs. conservative!

This is very simple.  The man has said he doesn't endorse candidates for office.  He also has said he is ideologically neutral.  I challenge the accuracy and veracity of both statements.  The basis of my challenge is that I have personally heard him endorse several candidates, all of whom have been Republicans, and the evidence I have produced so far tends to support my position.

However, I will concede the possibility that I may have missed telecasts where O'Reilly recommended voting for a Democrat over a Republican, and that I have failed to see subsequent reports of it.  So if you have evidence of his doing so, please link it.

Why do you allow a radical Left winger like Jer to hijack this thred and have him make moral equivalency between Olberman, Hannity and O'Reilly?

The FACT is that Olberman has gone after Foxnews and its OPINIO shows for giving donations to particular political campaigns. Olberman's huge problems here are two...

1) It looks like he did not follow his contract with MSNBC.

2) Pure and utter hypocrisy

Now Liberals like Jer all over the political blogosphere are attempting to do moral equivalency! Don't allow them, do not accept their premise and do not engange them in their foolishness.

Olberman always tells his watchers how middle of the road he is, how he doesn't vote so he doesn't seem to lean Left or Right.

This man has every right to do what he wants with his money, but if he breaks his contract guess what....he is out of a job or at least there are consequences to pay.

When radicals like Jer prove that Foxnews' contracts with Hannity, O'Reilly, etc have clauses that equate to MSNBC's then he'll have standing, otherwise he is just your typical radical Left wing cry baby who has been handed two incredibly huge losses in less than a week and guess what.....I AM LOVING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  BWAHAHAHA!!!!!

Furthermore by giving money to Liberal campaigns he also proved what a huge hypocrite he is and a liar.

Foxnews, O'REilly, Hannity and ALL of the opinion shows on Foxnews clearly claim that they are an opinion shows. They do not pretend to be middle of the road. That's is one the BIGGEST difference between Foxnews and MSNBC. Foxnews opinion shows admit they are opinion shows, editorial shows. MSNBC opinion/editorial shows claim to be hard news which supposedly give middle of the road interviews and commentaries. Olberman and MSNBC have always denied that his show is an Editorial/Opinion shows. Do you get the different radical Left wingers jer? No, I do not think so, your radical Left wing brain doesn't allow you to think clearly and objectively.

Please Jer, my "Moderate" radical Left winger stop playing your equivalency crap here on NB.

It might interest you to know that this "radical Left winger" [and lifetime news junkie] has watched more of Fox News in a single night than the offerings of Schultz, Maddow, and Olbermann--combined--since the latter three blowhards have been on the air.  And I seriously doubt that either motherbelt or Georgia Girl is persuaded or even slightly impressed by your drivel.

Thanks for your input and suggestion--and for saying "Please"--but you don't get to dictate what or how I post.

To be completely honest with you, after my original questions to Jer, there were just too many areas I wanted to debate him on (okay, argue would be more accurate)...so many areas, so little time -- too tired. I honestly just gave it up for the sake of my sanity. ^_^

And WHY do we let him go on and on? Simple. We report -- you decide.

Okay, I've caused enough trouble for one thread. Waving bye-bye.

Submitted by humanzee on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 8:38pm.

It's unlikely the other pundits donated to GOP candidates.  They probably donated to PACs and political organizations with agendas but not to candidates themselves.  This is VERY different.

Anyhow, don't blame Fox. Why does it always come back to Fox?  MSNBC hired him and MSNBC suspended him.  MSNBC probably thinks their investment isn't working out.  The liberals running that network decided to slap him around.

They hired Olbermann, a former sportscaster, in order to sell the liberal agenda to straight white men.   They thought he had "white guy" appeal.  They thought he would catch on like Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck amongst heterosexual white men... specially the blue collar types.

A lot of liberals are obsessed with presenting white male liberals who don't appear gay, indecisive, shy, metrosexual, juvenile, or foppish.

For MSNBC Olbermann was .... ESPN+Liberalism = manly liberalism = all men would flock to it.  OMG, a liberal man that worked for ESPN!!!

Democrats have lost a lot of male voters.  It's not working and they may want to get out of his contract.

This is one of those areas

Submitted by fitzfong on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 8:37pm.

This is one of those areas where Brent Bozell really gets on my nerves.  So, Keith Olbermann donated a total of $7200 to 3 Democrats running for office.  It's his money, he should be able to spend it on whatever he wants.  I don't like KO, so I don't watch him.  Remote controls are useful tools, Mr. Bozell might want to invest in one rather than peeing his pants and demanding disciplinary action every time some hack like Keith Olbermann bloviates.  As far as I can tell, this site is supposed to shed light on liberal media bias, so that people can put the information they receive into some sort of context...not so that people are driven to demand the termination of those whose views they don't like.  Freedom of speech cuts both ways.

Are you freaking serious?  Bozell had nothing to do with this...  He just called out Olbermann's hypocrisy and noted how it caught up with him.

MSNBC and the rest of the liberal media take big fat poops on Newsbusters.  They've been ignoring this website for YEARS!!!  Bozell can't get the time of day from these bastards.

And now he's responsible for his suspension?  What?

Olbermann pissed off the boss... plain and simple.

Humanzee, I didn't say that

Submitted by fitzfong on Sat, 11/06/2010 - 10:36am.

Humanzee, I didn't say that Bozell had anything to do with Olbermann's suspension.  Nor did I suggest that he was responsible for Olbermann's suspension.  My point was that Bozell was effectively cheerleading MSNBC's decision to suspend him on really WEAK grounds as some sort of comeuppance for his previous bad acts.  Problem is, Olbermann didn't get suspended for his previous bad acts, he got punished for donating his own money to Democrats...he's unlikely to have been the only one at MSNBC (or at any of the other media outlets, for that matter) to have donated to favored candidates.  But this is the excuse given for his suspension, and Bozell is happy with that?  I have to tell you, this is one slippery slope being created here.

Frankly, I don't believe Olbermann was suspended for donating to Democrats.  He may have been suspended for some other activity that will now get swept under the rug...or for declining ratings...or perhaps he colluded with MSNBC to set himself up as a straw man "example" to put MSNBC's "high journaistic standards" on show (especially in comparison to FNC).  Whatever the reason for the suspension, it shows a real lack of intellectual curiosity (and implies a willingness to have the same "standard" applied to Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly...or invites a spurious charge of "hypocrisy" for failing to apply it) to simply accept the explanation for the suspension, and to support as enthusiastically as Bozell has.  Lame.

I should address my assertion

Submitted by fitzfong on Sat, 11/06/2010 - 11:20am.

I should address my assertion that Bozell is cheerleading this suspension.  His statement does point out the relative weakness of the grounds for MSNBC's suspension of Olbermann.  However, while he suggests that the offense in question hardly merited the punishment, he frames the suggestion in such a way that even if the punishment was excessive for this particular crime, it'll do under the circumstances as retribution for prior unpunished (but more punishable) acts.  To me, that is an incredibly disingenuous position.

whoa... hold on there.

Submitted by humanzee on Sat, 11/06/2010 - 11:48am.

Nothing I've read on this site points to anyone cheerleading MSNBC's decision.  Bozell or others may be relishing Olbermann's humbling but all they've done is pointed out the irony of this whole event.  Olbermann sermonized on his show about the evil Fox guys and their public support for conservatives.  He's the one caught doing it while probably under contract not to endorse politicians.

Olbermann has masqueraded as a journalist whereas guys like Beck, Hannity, and O'Reilly have not.  I don't think they ever serve as anchors on the network like Sheperd Smith or Neil Cavuto. Olbermann on the other hand does anchor on occasion.

All of the Fox News commentators have side gigs and don't anchor news since they seem to be on tight schedules.  Beck, Hannity, and O'Reilly all do radio and/or web shows.  They also do public speaking and have to write and market their books.  These dudes hardly ever anchor news, too much going on for them.

Olbermann got fired by his liberal bosses at MSNBC.  It seems they wanted to get out of his contract and used his political donations as a reason to ditch him.  MSNBC is as bad as Keith.  They eat their own.  Olbermann is still a citizen and he has the right to do whatever he wants with his money.  That's not debatable.  It's just funny MSNBC would pull this and its ironic he'd get suspended for donating to political campaigns when her sermonized about how wrong it is for people like him to do so.  Anyhow, MSNBC is trying to cover the sun with a finger.  You can be as liberal as you want but you just can't have the paper trail.

I'm pretty sure Katie Couric and other news personalities have been caught going to Democrat fundraisers.

NBC liberals suspended him.  RECOGNIZE THAT.  Can you say.. CANNIBALISM?

As Fox viewers rejoice, little do they know such an act pushes them even further to the right.  With fewer liberals on the air to counter Fox's "opinions" it makes FoxNews look ever the more biased.

Not that it'll make a difference...Well, perhaps to those who want to fight about it.

if the only on air liberals were at MSNBC.  Fox News is THE only network that gives voice to the right.  They have enough lefties on to make me use the mute button more than I want.

Does it really make logical sense that in a business as competetive as news gathering, that EVERY outlet but one has the exact viewpoint on every story?  Would it not seem that to create a name for themselves, that an assignment editor would say, "Give me something different than CBS or ABC."

The people that watch Fox News, me being one, not only don't care that they give more voice to the right, it's what we watch it for.  We can go to ANY other channel and just about any newspaper in the country to get the left's point of view.

That being said, the viewership ratings of FNC are a drop in the bucket compared to the population of the country.  Talk radio is more, but still in a minority.  Maybe the reason so many people don't like what this President and Congress are doing is that they aren't as stupid as all those news channels portray them.

The poster said: "gives voice to the Right" and "gives more voice to the Right" (and the intent in the wording of the poster -- if you read the context of the sentence -- was that the Right side gets scant coverage elsewhere). You re-worded it to say that FOX is a voice FOR the Right, which has an entirely different meaning. There's a big difference. In other words, Fox actually gives the Right side of the equation, as well as the Left -- unlike most of the media out there, who just spin Left, Left, Left, Left, Left, Left, Left on everything -- with a vengence.

If you ever check out the percentages of Right vs. Left views -- Right vs. Left analysis -- the actual tally that is documented, FOX is the one that is balanced by showing both views.

When ALL other media outlets

Submitted by Guttermouth's Return on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 9:32pm.

When ALL other media outlets swing left, and while I have the humility to agree there is much bias in them, I find it dishonest that anyone can argue the Fox News is anything but a voice for the right hand fed from the right.  You know how much I like you GG, so I think it's best we agree to disagree on this one.

Well, that was quite diplomatic of you. I very much accept the "let's agree to disagree" motto. :)

I do believe you that you find FOX totally biased. I commend you for being vulnerable about agreeing the other media swing Left...but I still just really, really, really don't get how FOX is seen as so biased by the Left -- when they constantly show the Left views -- and have commentators droning on and on about their liberal views and are busy all day presenting both sides. I honestly just don't get it. I DO get that in the editorial aspects, they are pretty much Righties. For sure -- the tone is there, and there's quite a line-up of those advocating the conservative side. I don't think anyone can seriously argue that's not the case. But as a journalist, I know there is a big difference between the editoral page of a newspaper and the straight news articles -- and that is how it is with FOX too. Plus, they have so much representation of liberals. I get darned ticked off listening to them oftentimes, so how can they be benign in this regard??

But...I'm just gonna leave it at that. I don't get it. but I don't need to get everything, and I am not always going to get it. And sometimes -- not always -- but sometimes, it is best just to leave stuff alone!

Dead Kenney, My goodness

Submitted by Liberallies on Sat, 11/06/2010 - 12:35am.

Dead Kenney,

My goodness man, c'mon now.

Kucinich is always on O'Reilly and he even makes in once in a blue moon in Hannity's show.

Hannity's pannel always has one Liberal on and many times he speaks to Liberal pundits of some foundation or another.

Through out the day, during the hard news hours pundits from both sides of the eisle are always invited on and 99% of the time they are on.

As it has been documents, which you refuse to acknowledge when Georgia Girl said it to you, Foxnews day time hard news shows are actually quite balanced between Right wing punidts vs. Left wing pundits.

Can the same be said about CNN and MSNBC? How about Olberbye? The man never had a Right winger on! Hannity and O'Reilly always have at least two liberals on.

For goodness sake even Michael Moore has appeared on Foxnews shows, Hannity mainly. I think he was on O'Reilly also. Whoopi Golberg has been on O'Reilly quite a few times too.

and this is just facts from top of my head. If the research is linked to, you'll see how much of a lie it is that Foxnews Channel's hard news hours leand Right or that the Right wing Editorial shows stay away from putting on Left wingers.

The left hates Foxnews because it actually allows the Right to have a voice with out the Main Stream Media Liberal's bias filter.

Which of the FoxNews anchors is peddling the Conservative message without a Liberal on to stink up the studio? Keep in mind that most Libs refuse to deal with FNC -by their own choosing. Many times during the day you'll hear: "We reached out to [fill in idiot Democrat's name here]'s campaign but so far, they've not returned our call." So outside of those situations, just how often does this right-wing, straight-news messaging occur?

Gee, bk, you think CNN and MSNBC don't use that exact verbiage on a daily basis?  They're all playing a stupid game with you and you're not seeming to get it.  Fox is its own empire because there's no competition.  Why do you think that is?  Anyone can start a cable TV station.  It's best that it remains only Fox, because it's a gathering point for republicans who, coincidentally enough, believe Fox News is the only fair and balanced station.  When there is competition, Fox will suffer, and it's more important, it seems, that they remain an empire.  Conservatives stick together, right?

why it's ok for all other news outlets to be FOR the left, and hand fed (daily White House phone calls) FROM the left.

Most of us here have a problem with that, but also understand that it is what it is.  When I say that a news channel is leftward leaning, I mean by the sources they seek for any given topic.  If the story is guns, they go straight to the Brady camp.  If it's abortion, the people interviewed will be pro-abortion, black/white issues are naturally for the NAACP and so on.  FNC shows America that there IS another side to the story.

The fact that the established networks can't see this is what is stunningly sad.

Since the entire channel is devoted to espousing Democratic talking points and denigrating Republicans, is not the whole of MSNBC (and, heck, NBC) guilty of contributing to Democratic campaigns in the form of free advertising? This would be worth millions if the Democrats had to actually buy the air-time.
