Bozell: NPR Firing of Juan Williams Is Outrageous, Congress Should Investigate

By Brent Bozell | October 21, 2010 | 11:57

Managing Editor's note: National Public Radio (NPR) has fired longtime analyst Juan Williams for admitting he gets nervous on a plane when he sees a person dressed in Muslim garb. What follows is a statement from NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center President Brent Bozell.

Juan Williams has done nothing wrong. What he said echoes what the vast majority of Americans believe. It’s their tax dollars that fund NPR. But NPR is ignoring them. Instead, they are kowtowing to the agenda of radical anti-Americans like CAIR, and doing the bidding of George Soros, who hates Fox News with a passion.

And since when did NPR have standards? Here are just three examples of left-wing statements 100 times more outrageous than what Juan Williams said, with no reaction from NPR:

• "I think he ought to be worried about what's going on in the Good Lord's mind, because if there is retributive justice, he'll get AIDS from a transfusion, or one of his grandchildren will get it." -- National Public Radio and ABC News reporter Nina Totenberg reacting to Senator Jesse Helms' claim that the government spends too much on AIDS research, July 8, 1995 Inside Washington.

• "The Rapture, and I quote, `is the immediate departure from this Earth of over four million people in less than a fifth of a second,' unquote. This happily-volatilized mass of the saved were born again in Jesus Christ....The evaporation of four million people who believe this crap would leave the world an instantly better place." -- New Orleans-based National Public Radio commentator Andrei Codrescu, December 19, 1995 All Things Considered.

• MARGARET CARLSON: And wouldn’t it be a great thing if they moved it a few blocks? And Muslims and Americans who still worry would be talking to each other. Let’s compromise.

MICHEL MARTIN (NPR): Why should they move it?

CARLSON: Well, why don’t we compromise?

MARTIN (NPR): Did anybody move a Catholic church? Did anybody move a Christian church after Timothy McVeigh – who adhered to a cultic, white supremacist cultic version of Christianity – bombed the Murrah building in Oklahoma? – CNN's Reliable Sources, August 22, 2010. Martin is host of NPR’s “Tell Me More.”

We are preparing letters to the appropriate House and Senate oversight committees to request an investigation. More to come...

Well done, Brent

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 12:09pm.

Classic example of the hypocrisy.

We hear the McVeigh/Church canard all the time, even though it makes no sense since (a) McVeigh was reportedly no longer active in the white supremicist church, and (b) he did not attack the Murrah Building in the name of God, Christ, or Christianity.

On the other hand, the 9/11 attackers were on a specific 'jihadic" mission for Allah when they struck.  To separate the terrorists from their religiously-inspired motive is more than disengenuous; it's intellectually and morally dishonest.

I really think that if a White Supremicist group bought a large buiding near the Murrah Bldg and started to erect a multi-million dollar "cultural center" that the mainstream media would not have tolerated it.

I'm not sure exactly what the previous poster may have been getting at but having been around skin heads and knowing how they dress I would agree if that is what they mean. I was with a friend of mine who is hispanic at a music festival in SoCal many years ago. We walked past a group of about 10 or so young men. All had shaved heads, black boots with red laces, red suspenders and white t-shirts. Obvious skin heads. I felt uncomfortable and so did my friend. I'm sure if Juan told that story, he'd still have a job.

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 12:48pm.

I was kidding when I posted that, as I'd hope was apparent.

Obviously, different people are uncomfortable in different situations.  It's absurd to get fired for saying so, IMO.

I saw a bunch of skin heads when I was in Munich one time....THAT scared me.  I was scared when the teamsters where I work threatened to strike, as was everyone in management.  We went so far as to hire security, and transportation for non-union employees, in preparation for the strike.

To be fired for fairly stating a fair concern, as Juan Williams was, is pc run amok.  I sincerely hope NPR has to pay the butcher bill on this one.  Losing all of their funding would be a good start.  Maybe yank their FCC license, too.

I was just about to post the same type of sentiment.

Stationed in Germany 2+ years I saw my share of true hard core skinheads.  Nurnburg, Furth, Erlangen and Munich and all sorts of places in England while training with the Brits.

Not a time went by while sitting in a train station did they not come through and try to push me and my fellow soldiers into a confrontation all the while being in civilian clothes.

SS markings and all, but you don't hear the media talk about them, only if they are in the states and they belong to a "right-wing" group or christian group.

Just like gangs of whatever ethnicity/beliefs everywhere.  Typical punks, all.  Taking advantage of the fact that they've got the upper hand (I'd imagine your command had given stern warnings about the pr aspect of handling these situations, yes?).

Oddly, I was visiting some friends, active duty there, (in Nurnburg...I hiked the castle tower in my cowboy boots!)...and the guys had the same kind of reaction...avoid avoid avoid.  Not that they'd have minded, as I'm sure you wouldn't have, either, putting those punks in their places.  But it just wasn't done.

Remember the "flying imam" incident a few years back...and IIRC, CAIR sued the airline.  More loveliness.

Political Correctness may yet kill thousands.  And then these liberals will be wailing at the top of their lungs "why didn't someone protect us"?

Sheesh!!!!

I wrote my congressman this morning around 10AM and requested that Congress defund NPR.  I frequently grind my teeth when I listen to Juan, particularly when he turns himself into a pretzel defending Obama, BUT he is a journalist and I respect his right to voice his opinion.  At least he TRIES to understand where conservatives are coming from.

NPR's censorship of Juan Williams is a travesty and I, for one,  do not want my tax dollars funding what is no longer (if ever) National "Public" Radio.  Let Soros, et al fund them- they'll go the way of Air America.

I watched a bit of Fox after this came out....and he is being roundly supported by his conservative cohorts on Fox, as well as by Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, Brent Bozell, most conservatives here and on the NPR website.

It will be fascinating to see if this changes Juan's outlook on the world.  As a liberal, he has to be doubly stung by being fired by a liberal bastion for fairly stating his opinion, while the leftists are shouting "yay, he's a traitor, kill him, he is on Fox with the Repugs".....and conservatives think his firing was stupid and wrong.

I'd love to welcome Juan to the Dark Side of the Force, where Darth (Cheney) rules.  Conservatism is fun!

Every one knows full well NPR is a liberal, biased institution and the government should not be in the business of propagating liberal bias.

Let's see if NPR can make it as a private enterpise.

give $3 to "The Presidential Election Campaign Fund Act".  Why can't I have a "conscience" box that allows me to opt out of supporting organizations like NPR, government sponsored infanticide or embryonic stem cell research?

No, instead, the only option I get is helping finance presidential elections. As if there isn't ENOUGH money going to them as it is.

NPR is a bastion of liberal propaganda. It is included with the "home shopping" channels as one that gets blocked from my in-tv channel programming.

Submitted by soosan on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 1:31pm.

I liked his perspective - he seemed like a reasonable media guy.

As to the firing, he's not the only one who will lose a job over truth telling - many of us are in positions where honestly speaking our minds would cause great professional jeapordy.

I predict great success for Juan as he moves on with his career.

As to investigations etc.  Brent is letting his heart get in the way of his head.  The focus should be on the election.

Submitted by JustAl on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 1:59pm.

NPR has a right to fire Juan, I don't agree with why they did it, but as his employer I can see them having the right to protect what they consider to be their "brand."

The congressional investigation that should take place should have the goal of de-funding NPR and removing this parasite from the taxpayers' back.

NPR fears CAIR more than

Submitted by deerjerkydave on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 2:09pm.

NPR fears CAIR more than average Americans.  This move proves that NPR is also afraid of Muslims and what they might do if opposed.  It's time to fire NPR and cut their funding.  There are plenty of radio and television options out there, it makes no sense for taxpayers to fund NPR and PBS.

NPR = Nightmare Public Relations

Submitted by samhermanmd on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 3:08pm.

I wonder if the management bothered considering the negative publicity that this would generate?  Probably not,  because they probably consider any person who does not regularly listen to their diatribe of no concern.  They have painted themselves as hypocrites, and any public relations person would tell you that is a huge problem to overcome.

At Juan's level, one would think it would be a customary practice to include a clause in the contract prohibiting denigrating comments or the like.  Don't know if that applies in this case, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out.  The timing on NPR's part was awkward to say the least.

I'm sure NPR is covered by boilerplate "detrimental conduct" or "actions inimical to the interests of the employer" contractual clauses, although Juan may have a discrimination action.

But unless there are extenuating factors, this is just sheer idiocy on the part of NPR--and a public image calamity.

Juan is an honest, earnest,

Submitted by Edhenry on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 8:40pm.

Juan is an honest, earnest, true journalist that carries the remnant burden of being black in America with dignity, brains and courage. He is the best example of bridging the race division that seems to be widening in this country though dialogue, instead of ersatz victim status or seperation.

In 30 years, NPR has gone from a fresh news outlet to a cowardly mega-media outlet, shackled with biased PC limits and a pedantic political agenda.

(I don't agree with many of Juan's perspectives, but I aspire to his professionalism)

A Little Too Premature To Overreact, I Think...

Submitted by The7Sticks on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 10:42pm.

First of all, it is generally a waste of taxpayer dollars to be investigating any Mickey Mouse controversy regardless of who's instigating it. This proposed investigation into NPR's firing of Williams would be as trivial as Stephen Colbert testifying on the House floor on behalf of Democrats. I thought we were broke in the first place, so why should this have as high a priority as trying to balance the budget? Sometimes, I think you are not quite the conservative you claim to be.

In any event, though, it's NPR's loss in the end because Juan Williams is one of the few fair AND balanced reporters in the MSM. Whether you disagree with him or not is beside the point. He takes to task both the left AND the right. That's what any objective reporter should do. And yes, it is perfectly acceptable to question the wisdom of ardent Islamic followers who choose to wear such bizarre clothing when, here in America, they have the freedom not to be so restrained. Heck, I'd feel better if they dressed like the characters in Glee, if you know what I mean.

And finally, you can save pulling out the Soros card, it's been as overused as pulling out the Koch brothers cards. In America, we have the freedom to support whatever cause we want, and that includes fiduciary support. If the Koch brothers want to support Republican initiatives, good for them, it's their money and their right. Same goes for Soros, which I can now safely say he does directly support Media Matters as of yesterday. More power to them all.

I have to disagree

Submitted by Jito463 on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 11:32pm.

Sorry, Brent, but I have to disagree with you.  NPR, like any employer, has the right to fire whomever they want for any reason (assuming it doesn't violate federal laws regarding race, religion, etc).  If Juan Williams wanted to sue for compensation, I'd be supportive; but to call for a congressional investigation on this matter is way overboard.  Congress has no reason to be involved in this.  Just like the whole "steroids" issue with the baseball players (I think it was baseball, anyway).  I never understood just why Congress felt the need to get involved in what is ultimately a private sector issue.

We need to get government OUT of our lives, not invite them in further.  Let Mr. Williams take them to court, and support him in that action.  However, calling for Congress to get involved is the wrong action to take.

Ok, fine

Submitted by Jito463 on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 9:12am.

If you want to investigate them for wasteful spending (which I would concur with), then that is an appropriate use of Congress.  However, to sanction a Congressional investigation over a firing is not appropriate.

Let's be clear on what we're saying.  I have no issue with defunding NPR/PBS, but that's the extent of an investigation that I would support.

While I may find their firing of Mr. Williams to be distasteful, I have to acknowledge that they have the right to fire him at their discretion.
