Bozell Column: MTV's Exotic Marathon (and Junior-High Education?)

The programming gurus at MTV are basing their profit-making strategy on the viewer demographic of 12 to 34 – as if there’s no difference in maturity level between 12 and 34. MTV’s brand of sensationalistic "reality TV" was easily demonstrated on the night of October 5, when they aired a prime-time marathon (from 7 pm Eastern to 1 am) of their hour-long documentary series called "True Life." Just the episode titles were jaw-dropping.

1. "I’m Out."

2. "I’m Polyamorous."

3. "I’m Bisexual."

4. "I’m Changing My Sex." (This ran twice in a row.)

5. "I Work In The Sex Industry."

Some of these (Polyamororous, Bisexual, Sex Change) debuted in the last few months. Others weren’t (the Sex Industry show debuted last year, "I’m Out" in 2006). Recent "True Life" programs without the Behind the Zipper focus, such as "I’m a Sports Fanatic," were somehow not sexual or outrageous enough to be selected for this marathon targeted at 12-year-olds and up. MTV isn’t kidding when they tout the series as "remarkable real-life stories of young people and the unusual subcultures they inhabit."

Just for the record, the MTV website advertises these "True Life" programs are not given content ratings, so there was no chance a parent relying on the empty promise of V-chip technology would keep these programs out of their home.

MTV programming chief Tony DiSanto says the new teens and twentysomethings are "the transparent generation," too wise to the ways of "reality" television. "They don't want to see a reality show that feels produced or is film-like," he said. "It's got to be real, authentic."

But MTV is also encouraging these demanding teenage viewers to feel empathy. The Cleveland Plain Dealer recently located Marlena Roman, a local 16-year-old high school student and a big fan of teen reality shows, especially MTV’s "The Hills." She finds these shows "addicting. It's exciting to know what happens next. You can think about it, if you were in that person's shoes."

The fair question then becomes: Is MTV encouraging teens to think about being "in the shoes" of homosexuals, bisexuals, transsexuals, the "polyamorous," and porn stars? It certainly pushes an ideology of sexual "liberation" to promote empathy. But it’s also obvious that it can promote sexual experimentation and new sexual identities, not just personal sympathies.

When MTV Vice President of Entertainment and gay activist Brian Graden announced he wouldn’t renew his contract in June, he and MTV chief Van Toffler wrote a syrupy memo together that said in part: "If you look at the shows we have all created together -- especially lately -- you can feel a tangible fascination with people on the brink of their next great adventure in life. We have called it aspirational television -- capturing people at the moment of transformation into a bold new iteration of themselves."

It would not be daring to guess that shows like "I’m Changing My Sex" fit snugly into that "transformation into a bold new iteration" category.

It’s more difficult for MTV to fit into the "aspirational television" category a heterosexual man who is "gay for pay, all the way" in pornographic films. "Aaron" was one of the stars of "I Work in the Sex Industry," alongside "Rachel," whose job was recruiting "hot" women to try out for starring roles in porn films. She says "porn is my destiny." His motto is "Everyone has a price." There was also a third protagonist, "Shawntelle," a college radio host who talked non-stop about her adventurous "sexcapades," on trampolines and elsewhere. Twelve-year-olds could see pixilated nudity and gay kissing and foreplay scenes.

After watching "I Work in the Sex Industry" last year, Ed Baker wrote a column denouncing it for the Arizona-based website College Times, even as he confessed he has not lived a highly moral life. To him, MTV is the Sex Education Channel.

"What makes this so unfortunate is that they target this message to an audience who is still, by and large, afraid to talk about sex. Kids don't want to talk to parents about this stuff. Schools and school districts are fighting over how to educate kids about it. And so, they're left to get most of their education from their friends, who largely learn it from other kids, and the stuff they read, hear and see. And that stuff includes MTV," he wrote. "I know all this because my sex education was basically formulated the same way. And my ideas about sex were incredibly skewed for years because of this."

Baker denounced the MTV documentary as a "BS-filled piece of porn industry propaganda meant to drive ratings." Then he lowered the boom on behalf of America’s teenagers: "It's a lie. And that's unfortunate. Because it's aimed squarely at a group of people who could really use the truth."

MTV is a pay channel

If you do want it in your house, perhaps it is best not to pay for he channel. I love my tv and have over 500 channels at home including MTV and VH1, I choose not to watch those channels because I have no interest and it should also be my responsibility for to tell my child not to watch it.

Excuses..

If you do want it in your house, perhaps it is best not to pay for he channel.

As I as I know, you can't 'pick and choose' which individual channels you want and don't want. MTV, I think, is included in most packages. I don't watch the vacuous channel myself.

Now, you make sure that you point out that it's your choice what you watch or listen to when your side tries to shut down talk radio. I see no such efforts on the part of the 'right'.

My Side?

Sorry Sergeant Rock, you should not just assume things. I believe in freedom of speech whether it be advocates for gays, Keith Olbermann, Rush Limbaugh or Glen Beck.

"I have a Bush man-crush, you need to understand."-Mr. Shy

Funny first example there..

.. but then, I do believe there was a previous conversation about equating 'freedom' with the amount of sodomy you can engage in.

So, you believe, for example, that it's okay for Rush to campaign against sodomy freedoms without having to provide equal time on his show that favor it?

Absolutely SR, I am not a big Limbaugh fan and I can't stand Bill O'Reilly, but I will crawl on broken glass for their right to be on the air.

Forward or backward, you

Forward or backward, you have a talent for missing the point.  (I'm giving you credit, because if you're not missing the point, you're purposely deflecting the point, in which case you're the worse problem.)

It doesn't cause you any concern at all that MTV's stated target for this trash is 12-34 year-olds?  Or that they lump those age brackets into a single demo?

As for your argument about pay channels, MTV is not treated like HBO and other premium channles in most markets.  It is bundled.  So if you want channels like Discovery Science, Space, or other upper-tier offerings, you get MTV in the bargain--no choice.  If I don't want it in my house, I have to go to further length (and expense) to block it.  So I have to DEFEND my house against this cultural attack.  You're right--it's just oh so benign.  (Yes, that was sarcasm, in case you missed that, too.)

Well Hockey Kid

To MTV its all about ratings and they don't have to abide by the FCC rules like regular network tv. It does not bother me what they put on that channel, because the service I use can easily block that channel if i wish..

I don't want my child watching it and it  is my responsibility to make sure.

Yes, but unfortunately for you we have the right to bitch about thinks we don't like, too.  If you don't want to hear people complaining about MTV, the solution is very simple.  Ask MTV to go away.  Once it does, the griping (and praise, if any) goes away.

To me this is beyond depressing.  MTV, when I was young, was a very cool, very fresh thing.  Personally, I trace the death of MTV to December 1987, when a game show called Remote Control premiered on the network.  It seemed innocuous at the time.  But what it would turn out to be in the end was the network's turning away from playing music and instead being another channel with shows.

I haven't watched MTV since March 1995, when they killed off Headbanger's Ball.  Even then, that show was withering on the vine well before that.

I'm much less offended by MTV than saddened at the rotting away of the corpse.

Disgraceful

I'm not understanding why the Left continues to push the "sex" agenda. I don't think it helps foster "understanding" of homosexual culture, nor "acceptance" of homosexual issues. I think that eventually people are going to be angered by the forcible [something] of their values. It's clear now that even derogatory remarks aimed at this group is tantamount to racism, so why anger people by shoving this stuff down their throats (pardon the pun.)

The group FIRE has another interesting video here that deals with this in a Social Work program at Missouri State. At least in this case, they got some comeuppance.

Here's what it's all about

115 out of 800 girls are pregnant at a Chicago High School.

Interesting picture, given Paul Robeson High School is predominantly . . . well, that's got nothing to do with it anyway, does it.

Obama profits with dependant voters waiting to turn 18.  The abortion mills profit.

And the boys get all they can handle.

That's MTV!

Aww, isn't that cute

6 future democrats on the doll.

→ Just lovely

Of these 118 girls, how many do you think will find gainful employment within the next 15 years.

outlook not good

I have some experience helping girls who got pregnant in HS.  I can offer two examples to be brief.

One of the girls I know is on her third pregnancy, her other two children are in the care of the state, her husband is in jail for drugs and we know he's hit her more than once.  She is filing for divorce so she can get welfare support but we don't believe she intends to leave him.  We've tried to help financially but the money goes straight to drugs.  She's is addicted to meth (thanks to her husband) and will likely have her third child taken after its born.

Another girl, who got pregnant to keep her boyfriend.  After she got pg he took off.  She was unable to finish HS so she works the night shifts at the local bowling alley while her mother babysits.  She doesnt see herself finishing school.  She's simply "too far behind".  She's 'comfortable' with her food stamp life.  Her son, now four, is already very obviously out of control.  We also tried to help financially but found out she was purchasing expensive luxury items instead of what we'd hoped - to get her back to school.

I wish I could offer better stories.  I know they are out there.  But statiscally the outlook for a teen mother ... not good.

Was the title "I'm Stupid" already taken?

Progressives are regressing at a rate that would make Caligula faint. Oddly enough they never admit that they are both foolish and stupid.

I've got a male teen in my house. I can tell you that I grew up on MTV and this kid NEVER EVER watches it. I don't believe his friends do either. MTV is a relatively dead show.
That being said, if you really don't like what's out there, either don't ever watch it (what I do - I never watch TV) or cancel your cable. Save yourself a lot of grief and money over the long term - and it really hits the enemy where it hurts - in the pocketbook!

MTV

I don't watch MTV, though I'm paying for it evidently. I would add though that it is liberals who are trying dictate what can be 'said', not conservatives.

Re Grew Up

Me too. I'm too old to have grown up on it, but when MTV first launched it was great. Non-stop music videos (as the name MTV might suggest) with advertising now and then. Sounds like a cheap and profitable model to me. Now it's crap.

If you don't like MTV, then block it

It's just that simple.

-Dave

Not to some Dave

People love to trash things things they don't have to watch. MTV is just filthy I tell you, I can't believe they allow this on the air, oh by the way, lets boycott the advertisers that refuse to air during Glen Beck because I hate people trying to take away something I like.

"To him, MTV is the Sex

"To him, MTV is the Sex Education Channel."

Honestly, Viacom should just now call it that. The M in MTV is so misleading that ESPN plays more music with their jingle on their own station than MTV ever will.

Surprise

I have to deal with some of these problems as a summer educator. Half my kids I teach "think" their gay or bisexual because it's "Hip" to do. I don't understand. I assume there are some teens that actually believe it themselves but I can tell half of these 16 year olds are doing it for attention.

It aggravates me because they are making light of someone's else problems for a tool of social status.
