Hollywood can still mount a soapbox and recall the dark days when people lost their jobs in show business for daring to take an unpopular political position that was outside the mainstream. Whenever they’re criticized, they proclaim "McCarthyism," accuse their critics of "blacklisting," and condemn the deplorable "intolerance."
Hollywood has yet to accept, perhaps even to understand, that it is the entertainment industry that excels at this slanderous behavior. After California voters narrowly approved Proposition 8, which amended the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman, it was revealed that Scott Eckern, the artistic director of the California Musical Theater in Sacramento, the state's largest nonprofit musical theater company, had donated $1,000 to the Yes on 8 campaign.
Eckern’s freedom of speech be damned: the man needed to be punished. Producer Marc Shaiman's musical "Hairspray" had played at the theater and he announced he would never allow anything he wrote to play there because of Eckern's donation. Shaiman’s declaration triggered a blistering e-mail pressure campaign, forcing Eckern to resign.
Shaiman claimed to the Associated Press that he regretted that it came to Eckern losing his job and said: "It's a tragedy for everyone involved. You'll certainly see that no one called for him to resign."
Shaiman said he would never allow anything he wrote to play there, but he doesn’t think that was creating pressure to dismiss Eckern? That confounds common sense. So great was the pressure that Eckern, a Mormon, also felt he had to donate a repentant $1,000 to a gay-rights group. Meanwhile, the theater bizarrely claimed it would not "impinge on the rights of its employees to engage in political activities."
This wasn’t the only blacklisting. Los Angeles Film Festival Director Richard Raddon, also a Mormon, was pressed into a resignation after his $1,500 donation to the Yes on 8 campaign was disclosed. Film Independent, the festival’s organizer, put out its own Orwellian statement that "Our organization does not police the personal, religious or political choices of any employee, member or filmmaker." But one Film Independent board member told the Los Angeles Times that the "progressives" also berated Raddon personally with phone calls and e-mails.
Gay activists are correct that they have every right to boycott theaters or businesses that offend them. But that’s exactly the right that anti-communists claimed in the middle of the last century, and Hollywood has spent more than 50 years condemning this as an attack on hallowed free speech. The hypocrisy speaks for itself.
It wasn’t enough for Marc Shaiman to get Eckern fired. Next, he made a star-studded satirical video (appearing on the comedy website Funny Or Die) mocking opponents of Prop 8, casting the comedian Jack Black as Jesus Christ, who trashed the Bible as hopelessly out of date. It is more of the anti-religious bigotry for which this industry, supposedly so devoted to "tolerance," has become famous.
The cartoonish Christians in Shaiman’s video sing it’s "time to drop some hate" with Prop 8. They proclaim that they lied about gays, "but it worked, so we don’t care." So "Jesus" shows up to "correct" – and to ridicule -- the idea that the Bible calls homosexuality an abomination: "but it says the same thing about this shrimp cocktail....Leviticus says shellfish is an abomination!"
This phony-baloney Jesus seems to be quoting directly from an Obama speech in 2006 that suggested Christian conservatives weren’t reading their Leviticus. But neither Obama nor Shaiman will admit in the Bible there is also St. Peter’s vision in the Acts of the Apostles, where he’s told to abandon the idea of clean and unclean foods.
Shaiman also has his Bible-trashing Jesus sing that the Bible says "you can stone your wife, or sell your daughter into slavery." This is also a common pro-gay argument, as if Christians today are all recognized to be active in wife-stoning and daughter-enslaving. When the Christians say they ignore those verses, Jesus scolds, "it seems to me you pick and choose...Well, then, choose love instead of hate. Besides your nation was built on separation of church and state."
Only someone utterly ignorant would make a video where Jesus descends in a vision to humanity only to sound like a lawyer for the ACLU.
Hollywood loves to pose as the trendy defender of civil liberties, but clearly no one who wants to remain employed would ever dare to make a musical mockery of Shaiman and his blacklisting coalitions. No one has forgotten the ruined career of former "Grey’s Anatomy" star Isaiah Washington for ingloriously using the gay six-letter F-word on a private set. From now on, no one in entertainment is going to feel safe making a donation as measly as $100 to a conservative defense-of-marriage campaign.

December 4, 2008 - 16:55 ET by bigtimerI just do not have any words left anymore for my anger with La-La-Land, the msm, the direction this country is taking, the filth and leftism are children/grand-children are being taught, the give me give, give me, you owe me, you me owe, victim-hood, cradle to grave mentality, law-suit happy mentality this country is taking...and of course the bashing of religion and religious groups, unless you are Muslim of course...(I mean no offense to those who are here, but you get my drift I am quite sure, I'm talking about those like the CAIR group)
Btw...anybody see or hear about this...here is another example.

Once again the Seattle airport gives in, I have had plenty lay-overs there in my life-time so far when I lived in Ak., a couple of our kids are living in the area now...
I saw/read the Christmas ornament thing too, which is sickening, for me what is is even worse as far as I am concerned they let that gal come the the Christmas party or whatever it was at the WH anyway.
I never would have...glad they decided not to include the ornament on the tree though...(I know they didn't know what all it had said in the tiny inscriptions ect, but after they found out, her visit should have/would have been cancelled by me.)

You know, people with the "wrong" views that don't deserve to be heard.
I read on David Horowitz's website that he was protested at a college (what else is new?) and one of the protesters interviewed said that being a liberal meant listening to other points of view. She then turned around and said that he shouldn't be allowed to preach his hateful views.
Irony? What's that?
It's not even irony anymore.
December 4, 2008 - 18:12 ET by HockeyKidLiberals are, by definition, mentally retarded.
How can I say such an insensitive thing? Mental retardation is the failure of the brain to develop beyond a specific normal age. The ability to recognize self-contradictory statements typically develops at about 6-8 years of age. Adult liberals make self-contradictory assertions (like the one you described) all the time. Therefore, liberals are mentally retarded.

On Values and Victims
December 4, 2008 - 17:55 ET by CGattonWhile I agree with the sentiment expressed by Brent, and deplore the actions of the loony tune Hollywood crowd, there is more than enough blame to be passed around and shared with respect to the sliding values, ethics, and morals of contemporary American society. Let's start with Scott Eckern and Richard Raddon, the 'victims' of the above piece. They resigned, and at least in the case of Eckern, paid a ransom to the inmates attempting to run the asylum. What message does that send about committment, and belief in principles?
They should have merely pointed to the vote, declared it the will of the people, and continued on with their daily lives. Neither had to resign, nor should they have done so, for by resigning they have given both approval and a certain amount of legitimacy to the intolerant ones who decried their involvement in the political process. They are victims only because they let themselves become ones.
Assume they had not resigned. What could have happened to them? Could they have been fired? No, not without a hue and cry that would have driven the gays back into the depths of the closets from which they periodically spring. I suppose the businesses they worked for might have suffered some small financial burden, but both businesses expressed the view that the employee's private lives were ...umm... 'private.' But both saw fit to avoid the good fight, to show less backbone than that of a little old lady who had to have her cross physically removed from her hands.
No, I consider neither of them victims, except of their own desire to 'not make waves.'
Before I hear the rush of those saying, "walk a mile in their shoes," I will tell you up that one of my sons lives the gay life style. He has refused to speak to his mother and I, refused to attend the family Thanksgiving dinner, and is refusing to attend Christmas dinner. After all, his mother and I, while congratulating him on his candidates winning the presidency, had the termenity to follow with the comment that we hoped he enjoyed the changes promised, with which he was so enamored. Oh, and we refused to commiserate with him about the success of Prop 8 in California.
Of course, when he needs a paper checked before handing it in to a college instructor I still get an e-mail and a phone call to please spell and grammar check it. :o) ...and yes, I do it, because he is still my son, regardless of his wrong-headedness.

December 4, 2008 - 18:20 ET by HockeyKidYes, but your personal situation notwithstanding, I don't get the feeling that you've ever been steamrolled by the gay lobby. Having changed career choices myself as a result of similar treatment (and that was 25 years ago), I can attest to the extremely uncomfortable situations these activists can create when they so choose. The news stories clearly can't provide all the details, but I would not be suprised to learn the resignees were placed under far more pressure than has been made apparent.

While you are right, I haven't, I like to think I know how I'd respond to similar pressure. I also disagree that the gay lobby could put on any more pressure than ones own child. Regardless, on this we'll just have to disagree.
"...news stories clearly can't provide all the details..."
I disagree on this also. The media could provide many more details, but won't. They will not show the gay lobby in any worse light than what they have. Notice the focus of the media wasn't what the gay lobby did, but on the reactions of the two men, implying, but never saying, that they (the men) felt they were in error in supporting Prop 8. This is a classic case of media bias.

December 4, 2008 - 18:31 ET by bigtimerClyde...
You are completely right regarding not bowing, bending and just removing yourself from your own job which you worked hard to get there in the first place, letting the minority take over the majority, let alone our own individual freedoms and personal choices, donation and votes...this is and has been the problem, and wil continue to be so until people stand up and fight back...with PRIDE.
We are going to have more activist leftist judges invading the court system from sea to shining sea now...and some people are bowing out to go along, get along.
By the way..don't feel alone regarding your son, while he isn't gay, I have same situation regarding Obama and his support for him...we didn't speak for a few weeks before and after the election, things got heated between us in a conversation earlier...we finally talked on Thanksgiving though after I called, I told him, I hope Obama does all you seem to think he is going to for you.
I asked him outright about a month and a half back now if he considered himself a socialist...he wouldn't answer, still hasn't...that is anwer enough for me.
His answer to me is...I don't want to talk about it for the most part.
He is 35 now...if only he would see the light ....maybe on down the road...college years had a lot to do with it, I did my best over the years to teach him different... land distance between us may have been a contributing factor, I don't know, but his father is opposite of me politically also.
Truly isn't going to matter now anyway in my opinion, we are now being completely engulfed in socialism, this bail-out take over is just the beginning of the giant sucking sound coming with the likes of which we have never seen...the complete control of our daily life is about to be taking over.

December 5, 2008 - 00:10 ET by BlondeSo very nice to see you back here, friend.
I must agree, one can only be made a victim, if one so chooses. As you so cogently pointed out, the "little old lady with the cross" chose not to be a victim...she stood up for her beliefs...and more power to her for that.
Each of us is responsible only for our own values, and while we attempt to influence our friends and families, ultimately, the only one for whom we are accountable, in the end, is me, myself, and I.
As for the rest, one loves one's family, regardless of their politics. I can understand the dissention, but each of us chooses our own causes....and if gay marriage isn't your thing, well, so be it. I understand how difficult it must be...but in the end....who does he call for a grammar check, eh?
Hope all is well w/you, Clyde.

Ignorance to truth
December 4, 2008 - 19:15 ET by Chattychitofirst of all the Mormon's don't use the Bible. they have it handy but claim it is totally in error. they promote and use the Book of Mormon a fantasy at best.
Youse the issue is not about allowing gays to marry and never was. thye have all the rights in common law unions. and if they need certificates for their unions let them have it.
the Bible you see, and the gays know it, is the only literature that says marriage is one man and one woman. it is not about civil law it is an issue they have with God. they want to change the meaning so they can spit in God's face that's all.
Prop eight wasn't about not letting them have unions it was about keeping the traditional meaning of marriage which is only found in the Bible.
Hey Gay's it was a 70% of black who voted yes on 8. go protest the blacks with you "Gays are teh new black" and let's see how far you get with that one.

If Ignorance to [the] Truth [Is No Excuse], What's Yours?
December 4, 2008 - 22:44 ET by CGattonI thought we had enough Mormon bashing during the primary season, before Mitt Romney dropped out, but I guess not. I kept my mouth shut then, because there seemed to be several members of this site ready to correct the obvious errors, and because at the time I had other fish to fry. Alas, those posters seem to have left, or have simply given up trying to educate those unwilling to learn. So I guess I get to give it a go this time.
"...the Mormon's don't use the Bible..."
That would be a good trick, from a church whose official name is 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,' don't you think? Which Jesus Christ, exactly are they referring to, if not the one in the Bible, and if they are referring to Him, then they must believe in the Bible - at least to the extent they acknowledge His existence and relevance to Christianity. By the way, I didn't know that the Mormons owned the word "don't."
"they...claim it is totally in error..."
No, they don't. What they say is that the Bible is correct, in so far as it is translated correctly, which is a far, far different kettle of fish. Who can reasonably disagree with that statement? Only non-Christians, I would venture. Are you going to stand up and say, "when the copy of the Bible that I am reading is translated incorrectly, then it is still correct!" Remember that what you are reading as the Bible today in no way resembles what was originally written. The Old Testament would have been totally incomprehensible to you, or me for that matter, since it was written in Aramaic or Hebrew, most assuredly not English, while the New Testament could have been written in Latin or Ancient Greek, but was mostly done in - drum roll please - Aramaic and Hebrew!
"...they promote and use the Book of Mormon..."
Well, that part is correct. It's what you don't say that makes your argument biased. Latter Day Saints consider the Book of Mormon to be additional scripture, that provides supplement to and support for the Bible, being the history of the American people equivalent to the history of the Hebrews presented in the Old Testament, and a separate witness of Jesus Christ, although in this hemisphere.
"...a fantasy at best."
Perhaps you are correct, perhaps you are not. The only thing we all know for certain about the Book of Mormon, the Deuterocanonical Books in the Catholic and Orthodox Bible, the entire New Testament (from the Jewish point of view), and the Bible itself (from a non-believer's point of view) is that none of us will know the truth until the day we die. For those of you who claim to know the truth, I'm sorry, but you don't. You have beliefs, which may or may not be justified, but you do not have knowledge. Faith, by its very definition, bypasses knowledge - to have certain knowledge is to lose faith.
"the Bible you see ... is the only literature that says marriage is one man and one woman."
"...the traditional meaning of marriage which is only found in the Bible."
If these statements were true, then the gay lobby and all who support them would be absolutely correct, denying them marriage would be 'respecting an establishment of religion,' and against the Constitution. Fortunately, you are incorrect. No society throughout history, from long before biblical times, and in areas of the world that had no biblical contact until much later than when the Bible existed only as oral tradition, have ever defined marriage as anything other than between men and women. Now the numbers of participants have varied, depending on whether the society in question was monogamous, polygamous, or polyandrous, but the sexual nature of the participants has never varied. Additionally, history is full of literature detailing the marriage of man and woman. Just one example is the Kama Sutra, which has 13 of its 36 chapters devoted to male/female marriage, and was compilied first between 200-300 BC from oral traditions dating much earlier.
I guess the bottom line is to please make certain of your facts before you speak. The old "better to be thought a fool..." rubric, attributed to everyone from Abraham Lincoln to Groucho Marx, would seem to apply.

December 4, 2008 - 19:40 ET by Redrowan2000The total hypocrisy of the not for free speech crowd on the left eg., Fairness Doctrine, the blacklisting of open conservatives or those who oppose the gay lobby on any issue , instead of McCarthyism there is Soroism. The virulent and violent tactics of the gay activists in San FranCisco, And groups like PETA. The total apathy of the now dead MSM in terms of how they report and who they report on, The mean spritedness and assinine social and poitical leaders of the left like Franken and Moore and yes Harry (you all stink ) Reid . It's scary that they really haven't stepped back and taken a look at what they have become. They have in terms of totalitarian obedience and tactics evolved into what they once abhorred. There is in life good and evil on both sides of issues, the left clearly stands out as obnoxious, arrogant, meanspirited and in lockstep with the media on every issue. I mourn the loss of our Great Generation
December 4, 2008 - 20:24 ET by MichiganVetMy wife and I were listening to Rush the other day and spent a few minutes on how we are spoiling our children. The more I thought about it, that really is the engine behind the rise of liberalism, anti-religion, gay-rights, left-anger and even the voting in of BO. It's all about THEM! Such as:
"I want a check, I want to tell people I voted for the 1st black POTUS, I want a cheap mortgage, I want low gas prices, I want my gay marriage to be treated exactly the same as a man-woman marriage, I dont want to have to go to chuch or follow any moral ethics, I dont want to fight in a war (and will riot in the streets to prove it) -- I hate President Bush, I hate the troops, I hate Conservative -- and I love Obama."
Our great generation, the people of this nation banded together (in a melting pot, not a tossed salad) and fought for their country to make it the best place on Earth, are to be honored and should serve as role models for our children.
Unfortunately, it's these old hippies, terrorists, hate-mongers, cheats, liars and political fungus -- God help us.

December 4, 2008 - 23:34 ET by The7SticksYeah, Marc Shaiman wrote the music and songs to South Park: Bigger, Longer, And Uncut (Maybe Trey and Matt wrote the songs, I forget which way it went.) So, I guess he's not going to allow "Blame Canada" to be played in Sacramento now?
I'm a little conflicted on this. I'm severely bummed out at the hostile reaction from gay activists, but I really am not surprised. After all, I usually hear that it's political groups like American Family Association that are the boycotters against corporations like Ford or McDonalds because they donated some money to some gay cause or something. I never hear any outrage over that because apparently they're doing the right thing. If this isn't a double-standard, I don't know what is.

Oh, And I Also Despise Anti-Secular Bigots...
December 5, 2008 - 00:03 ET by The7SticksMore to the point: Do any of you really believe that most of these people in that video hate Christians? If I did hate Christians and was a anti-Christian bigot, that would mean I would hate my cousin-in-law, who is a Christian pastor, or my late mother, who loved Jesus and prayed to him in times of need. But here's what I believe: They don't hate Christians. They do hate reprobates who claim they are Christian but actually have their own radical agenda, just as some Christians hate us so-called "eeee-vil secular progressives" for having our "eee-vil" agenda, as well as trying to scam us out of our hard earned money. Why do you think they keep claiming there is a so-called "War on Christmas"? Because it's the easiest way for them to "Grinch" you out of money you would have otherwise used to get your loved ones Christmas presents. Groups like Focus On The Family, the American Family Association and the Catholic League of Douchebags (I just couldn't resist) are the real enemies to our sovereignty, not these so-called secular progressives (which I am one and proud of it.) These are the anti-secular, anti-decent bigots you have to watch out for.

There is another great* religion that is completely unchanged from the day it was founded. They believe every word in their holy book is directly from the supreme being and must be followed without fail. It says to kill unbelievers, you must kill unbelievers. It says it is ok to marry prepubescent girls, then hey, it is allowed to this very day. Slavery - check, allowed. Beating your wife - check. Killing homosexuals - check. Honor killing - check. Now which religion might this be? Hmmmm.

add "are true"
Liberal fascists pointing out the errors in a 2000 year old document that no one actually believes are true.

Sincerely,

Orwell still said it best,
December 5, 2008 - 08:12 ET by nadadhimmiOrwell still said it best, with his bleating sheep (the media), 4 legs good, 2 legs bad!!. Later of course, after the commies took over the cry was: 4 legs good, 2 legs BETTER. That's why the teachers unions won't study Orwell anymore, it hits WAAAY to close to their liberal homes.
