Bozell Column: Liberal Smears Unchallenged

The general election season is under way, and the leftists are already displaying their hypocrisy. They’ve launched pre-emptive warnings against a Republican "swiftboating" of Barack Obama at the same time they’re making up wild allegations about the villainous ultraconservative plots against goodness planned by John McCain. The supposed civility police in the media are emphasizing the Obama warnings of a right-wing onslaught, but not the nasty leftist attacks on McCain. Once again, Republicans are painted as the agents of character assassination, while Democrats are angels whose style is sweet civility and whose substance is the refreshing truth.

Obama’s campaign is putting up its dukes with a new website called "Fight the Smears." It’s topped by an inspirational quote from Obama’s June 3 victory speech. "What you won’t hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge or patriotism as a bludgeon." In the words of the Almighty Barack, Team Obama pledges to steer clear of negative personal attacks, and avoid seeing their opponents "not as competitors to challenge, but enemies to demonize. Because we may call ourselves Democrats and Republicans, but we are Americans first. We are always Americans first."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The Democrats and the media are going to take a holiday from demonizing conservatives and Republicans? Ridiculous.

Try this exercise. Sign up for Fight the Smears electronic "Action Wire" alerts, and you receive this message from Obama’s fundraisers: "Now take the next step and make a donation to help push back on the petty and divisive methods of our opponents."

So much for not demonizing the opponents.

Already, Obama’s army of left-wing slime merchants is up on the television airwaves running ridiculous commercials. Did you see the one from MoveOn.org? It features a quavering blond mommy talking about how her baby makes her heart pitter-patter fiercely, but she’s gravely concerned the baby might be going to war. "John McCain, when you say would stay in Iraq for a hundred years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can’t have him."

What a pile of ridiculously inaccurate assumptions. First, we have an all-volunteer military. Second, even if President McCain were elected, he wouldn’t serve in office for eighteen years so he could make sure all the liberal babies of 2008 are sent to Iraq. USA Today was one of the few media outlets to suggest this ad was a foul ball. The Washington Post declared it "dramatically and personally" illustrated McCain’s open-ended approach to Iraq better than Obama had done.

Just as Obama’s media allies are silent about the left’s hypocritical approach to negative campaigns, so too are they silent about nasty left-wing videos on YouTube. Robert Greenwald’s "Brave New Films" collective has a commercial suggesting that under John McCain, contraceptives would be banned in America. They call their campaign "The Real McCain."

The ad is set in "President McCain’s Women’s Health Clinic." When a woman asks the perky blond nurse their about her contraceptive options, she’s handed a list. When the woman protests it’s a blank piece of paper and repeats that she asked about birth-control options, the nurse cheerily replies: "And at the McCain Clinic, you don’t have any."

Then a graphic reads: "John McCain voted against requiring insurance companies to cover prescription birth control." The fallacious argument within is that if the government doesn’t pay for contraceptives, or force insurers to pay for contraceptives, then no contraceptives are available. There’s no "option" to purchase your own condoms or birth-control prescriptions? Where are the media smear-fighters on this obvious howler?

Or take a virulent campaign called "I’m Voting Republican" from a firm accurately called Synthetic Human Pictures. Their Republicans are synthetic caricatures. A male doctor proclaims "I’m voting Republican because I don’t really want a cure for AIDS and breast cancer. They’re just gays and women." This video clearly isn’t meant to be factual, just vicious. This video has 2.3 million views at YouTube.

Cynical liberals think that the only way Obama can lose is for conservatives to take their well-traveled "low road" with negative ads. They’ve utterly forgotten – if they ever acknowledged – the low road they’ve traveled with millions of dollars in harsh ads against George W. Bush in the last two election cycles. Negative campaigning doesn’t always work. But the media always see negative campaigning as a game only Republicans and conservatives play.

And don't forget

And don't forget the candidate himself:

“We know what kind of campaign they’re going to run. They’re going to try to make you afraid. They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. ‘He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black?’" -Barack Obama, Jacksonville, FL, 6/21/08

Well, that's OK.....as long as you're not looking at your opponents "as enemies to demonize"..... (emphasis added throughout)

Well done, Brent...

They expect no opposition whatsoever. But should a single molecule of rebuttal arise, or when a conservative manages to move into a position to dispute their views, the left unleashes their Viet Cong guerilla-style attacks on that person or group.

Conservatives need to unite and fight this abuse of free speech. What the left is spewing recklessly is anything but free speech. They use their near-monopoly on information (like Yahoo!'s Obama Ads) to indoctrinate the less-than-aware audience to hate everything conservative and republican. Simple as that.

I hope that Obama is crushed...yes CRUSHED this November.

Drill ANWAR

Mega-Dittos that Agent,

A dog always

A dog always sniffs his own dung first. So true of the Leftists and their MSM cheerleaders.

As long as McCain and

As long as McCain and Republicans remain passive, this is what they can expect. They act as though they think they deserve the attacks and smear jobs. I don't know towards who I am more angry - the Dems and media for doing it - or the Republicans who let them get away with it by assuming the fetal position.

Not so sure it is us

or the Republicans who let them get away with it by assuming the fetal position.

I am not so sure the GOP is silent, I am starting to think their responses are being muffled. When do you ever see anyone from the GOP on any MSM station other then Fox? When are they given real time to rebuff accusations. If they are on, it is to ask them moronic question to keep them on the defensive. If we win this election, the folks in the MSM will/should be fired in droves. Unfortunately, I am less and less confident that we will.

Thanks Brent, hope others will see this hypocrisy for what it is?

gc, Chris is right. The republicans are spineless.

If Ronald Reagan could make an end-run around the liberal MSM and get his message out, so could the repubs, if they really wanted to.

However, given their sorry congressional performance, particularly over the last eight years or so, their message of lower taxes and, particularly smaller government (yeah, right) pretty much rings hollow at this point.

Even after their losses in the last mid-terms, they still apparently don't get it.

Given the level of stupidity that exists among the dumbMasses, which is as high as it has ever been in the history of this nation, IMHO, and unless Barry-O screws up so badly that even the MSM cannot save his Marxist a$$, I'd say the repubs are headed for disaster in November.

What's really infuriating

What's really infuriating is that they actually think that conservatism is what has been hurting them since 1994, when in truth, it's their abandonment of conservatism that has hurt them.

McCain is the embodiment of this abandonment.  When he opposed Bush and when he sides with the Senate Dems, they love him, but now that he's the enemy, their claws come out.

I doubt McCain will learn the right lesson from this.  If he loses, he'll blame conservatives; if he wins he'll believe it's because people want unprincipled deal-makers running the country instead of the truth that they held there noses and elected him because they're afraid of handing the presidency to a unqualified neophyte.

Republican leaders are wussy men!

They have had the dogcrap kicked out of them the last 8 years and have not stood up to the Dims.  I kept waiting for Bush to get hot and let the left have it.  Even after Harry Reid called Bush a liar, Bush did nothing to defend himself.  I finally gave up.  I also gave up being a Republican.  They are inept and that is why they find themselves in the straits they are in today.

Hmm, you may have a point,,

Come to think of it, your right

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

Your both right!

Come to think of it, have you all noticed as gc mentioned that the minority point is rarely featured on the MSM. When the Republicans were in charge, you couldn't turn the tv on without seeing some minority puke with thier rebuttles and democrat talking points about whatever was the big subject of the day. When was the last time you saw the minority viewpoint featured in this congress? The MSM are playing us for fools. Thank Heavens... for little g.....err....this site!

Careful there cro.  I thought maybe you were going to break into an R. Kelley medley.

...have you all noticed as

...have you all noticed as gc mentioned that the minority point is rarely featured on the MSM.

..and to illustrate this problem, go ask 10 people on the street who John Boehner is and I'd bet not half could answer..  maybe less.  His face or comments are rarely seen on msm soundbites.  Instead, we get a very steady diet of Schumer, Reid, Pelosi, Durbin, Murtha, and others..  to say biased doesn't seem to be a strong enough description.

  So this is real life

So this is real life right, not some weird sci-fi movie.

My daughter got a homework project over the summer from her new english teacher ( he sent a letter to all his new studends)

She has to read "Animal Farm"  and i got very excited. She not only has to read it but has to write a report about it.    She of course saw the movie (Napoleon The Pig voiced by Patrick Stewart) and said "why do i have to read it?"

Then I reminded her about a talk we had about AGW and I explained to her that this was NOT a kids book, it is showing how out of control "leaders" care not about the "people" they lead, and how the "uneducated" blindly follow.

Then I had another great "dad ISN'T as dumb as TV tells me he is" moment and my little girl said to me " like the sheep just repeating whatever the pig said, even though he changed the laws, isn't that what you say the people who like Barack Obama do?"

now that she is older I can't WAIT for her to read the book, so she and I can have a good talk about it.

My olny fear is that her teacher is some left wing aging hippie  liberal douchebag that panits the republicans out to be the pigs.

All that aside I thought "what a prefect book to read in today's world"

Homework over the Summer?

Homework over the Summer? Geez, that sucks.

  yea she's gointo to be

yea she's gointo to be a freshman in high school, and this is for  honors English.   She is in all honors classes so that means she may be able to graduate a year early.

A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.

....And after Animal Farm

....And after Animal Farm you should suggest Atlas Shrugged to really drive home the points on have and have nots... the "free" healthcare and the windfall taxes on success.......

A McCain Retort

What if McCain's campaign (or allies) parodied that video by posing a young woman without an infant, saying . . .

"John McCain, you said we might fight in Iraq for a hundred years, so I aborted my unborn child."

Response Video

Or...18 years later...

A grown up Alex asks, "Mommie dearest, can I join the military?"

"No you can't, sweetie. You're my boy and you're not going to Iraq."

"Yes, Mommie."

Oh geez, are we really this

Oh geez, are we really this far gone as a people of the USA ? How much uglier can we get.

Also, The Dems are a perpetual smear machine, perpetual! has it ever stopped?

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

I agree

I agree, the child is in much more danger from abortion than any war!

Regarding the MoveOn.org ad

I wish someone would put out an ad showing just how Ridiculous this Baby Alex ad is.

Perhaps a nice young couple holding a baby telling about what the world would look like for their baby under a Hitler type Obama regime.

While they are speaking you see a van pull up with the big Obama seal on the side with the word CHANGE.

Two men get out and go into the house dressed in their official environmentally friendly green suits.

As the two men grab the baby the couple screams

Obama You can't have him

The last thing you see as they drive off with the baby

is a close up of one of the badges on the men's lapel that says

YES WE CAN

MSNBC and MoveOn.org

Speaking of the MoveOn.org ad, have you guys seen how many times MSNBC has aired it? In the last few days, MSNBC must have aired the ad at least 100 times. I think that has more to do with MSNBC's support of MoveOn.org than anything.

MSNBC IS MoveOn.org

MSNBC IS MoveOn.org.

But you already knew that.

.

No wonder I havent seen it

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

I am voting Republican.

If you need to see the YouTube video for yourself...

http://www.youtube.c...

I will agree it is vicious to the right wing authoritarian mentality not that anyone would ever think it to be factual.

I figured most everyone has seen the MoveOn.org Ad on MSNBC since they seem to love watching MSNBC over Fox News nowadays. It's best to show all the videos the leftys have decided to be real life perceptions. They seem so delusional to believe the garbage that's spoon fed to them on a daily basis. It's as if they have taken over the airwaves. Good thing the conservatives still control the radio to get the message out!

Godspeed, John McCain, Godspeed!

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Wilson

The military is all volunteer

The military is all volunteer and it is working well and the troops want to be there.

Voters need to be reminded the Democrats like Rangel want to reinstitute the draft to help their anti war buddies. I remember the Vietnam War days when anti war zealots would yell "H no I won't go and some went to Canada!"

Dems want the draft returned not the Republicans.

The Liberals recognize no moral authority so they have no morals

It's all about what is expedient for them and what will get them what they want. They lie, they exaggerate, they distort, etc. All the while claiming that they are "taking the high road" and not engaging in "attack adds".

It's pathetic and I hope more and more people are seeing them for what they are.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

When is Obama going to put a stop to Moveon.org ads???

When is Obama going to put a stop to Moveon.org ads?..since he's always claiming McCain has the power to stop any conservative ad (e.g., Repub party of NC) and is so dissappointed that McCain hasn't quashed the "attacks" on his poor wife (i.e., completly fair and legitimate criticisms of his campaigner-in-chief)

Hey Barack: Why haven't you had the glut of videos out on youtube mocking and attacking McCain pulled?

While Obama is playing professional victim of the evil, racist, dirty Repbublicans, he might also want to retract and apologize for all they garbage he's been spewing for months now about McCain wanting 100 years of war in Iraq.

Obama is nothing if not a liar and a hypocrite.

Barrackades to Criticism

This whole general election cycle is going to be about the construction of premptive "Barrackades" to criticism of the Democratic candidate for president and the MSM is stringing right along.  The bottom line is that as a country, we can't afford this guy on multiple levels, but any attacks are because he's black.  Forget that he's left of Hillary and not a bipartisan legislator.  Forget that his past judgement has allowed him to draw an obvious bigot and racist into the bosom of his family and view the man as a mentor and sounding board.  Forget that the policies he's advocating will grow government and shrink the economy.  You can't attack any position or person related to this man because it is stated in advance that if you don't love and support him, it's the klansman in the closet coming out in you.

Time to take the gloves off, boys!

Good news! David Freddoso, the conservative author of “Unfit for Command” is writing a new book titled “The Case Against Barak Obama.”

http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20080623/pl_politico/11263?uh-oh

It is being published by Regency, the same house that published “Unfit” and it will be promoted by Creative Response Concepts, the conservative PR firm that orchestrated the swift boat media events and promoted “Unfit” to the top of the NYT best seller list. This is the exact same team that swiftboated Kerry and brought his campaign to a grinding halt. The tome is due to hit the shelves August 4.

Now I know what I am going to be reading on the beach this summer, don’t you?

Being that the book is

Being that the book is actually authored by John E. O'Neill and Jerome R. Corsi , why are you attributing it to a guy named Fredoso?
