Bozell Column: McCain vs. Limbaugh

Photo of Brent Bozell.

You can tell a lot about how the news media feel about conservatives by watching how they talk about Rush Limbaugh. They want his influence curbed. They pine for the day his career hits the skids. They’re constantly looking for a moment where they can declare that conservatives no longer have – that Rush Limbaugh no longer has -- the Grand Old Party in a menacing trance. They don’t want Republican candidates seeking a Limbaugh endorsement.

They think they found that moment on January 19.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

When McCain won the South Carolina primary, The Washington Post sharply declared the next day that he had “defused conservative attacks, from Rush Limbaugh to Tom DeLay.” CNN’s Carol Costello sounded boastful a few days later: “Conservative radio talkers bragged their influence helped put George W. Bush in office. How times have changed. Now leading many Republican polls -- John McCain. And those same talkers aren't bragging anymore. Voters have betrayed them, despite what's playing on Rush Limbaugh's show.”

No one chortled more loudly than that expert on conservatism, former NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw. He proclaimed on “Meet the Press” that the voters of America are now rejecting “dogma,” and they are a “nomadic herd” hungering for “solutions” rather than ideology.

Translation? The Reagan ideology is finished (thank God); the conservative movement is gone (good riddance); and happy days are here again, with Republicans embracing Democratic policy prescriptions instead (as they should).

Brokaw doesn’t want Republicans to have any troublesome litmus tests to decide which candidate is most conservative, not only because moderates like McCain will fail the test, but because it leads Republicans to pitch campaign promises at that conservative base that the media would like to believe is irrelevant.

"I was listening to Rush Limbaugh for an hour yesterday, who is determined to not have this campaign, as he put it, ‘redefine’ conservatism," proclaimed Brokaw. "And one of the dittoheads, one of his followers, called and said, ‘Well, help me out here. What do I think now about Pat Buchanan and Newt Gingrich?’ And it's one of the few times I've ever heard Rush Limbaugh kind of temporarily at a loss for words. And he ended up saying that they're not true conservatives. And that debate is not going to help the Republican Party, if they if they get bogged down in that."

It’s funny that Brokaw doesn’t think Rush should ever pause before offering a thought. I’m skeptical that Brokaw regularly tunes in to the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies. I’d take his "I’ve never heard Rush pause" talk with a cave full of salt. I doubt Brokaw has the intestinal fortitude to listen to Rush for a full hour.

But Rush explained the exchange in different words. He paused before listing where Buchanan and Gingrich have not been consistently conservative because it’s not easy to call out people who’ve "been profoundly instrumental in shaping the views of a lot of people in conservatism, and they both, from issue here to issue there, have, in my terms, wandered off the reservation. So I get somebody calling saying, ‘Well, what do you think about these guys?’ It's tough to have to say these things. I know both these guys and I like them both."

He wasn’t, as Brokaw claimed, saying they weren’t true conservatives. He was stating that not every idea they support is conservative. He said Buchanan wasn’t really a free-market candidate for president in 1992, and that Gingrich is too willing to get government involved in regulating away "climate change."

Given the intellectual vacuum of the GOP leadership, somebody needs to lead conservatives to analyze the candidate who is truest to their creed. Many talk-radio hosts are taking up that task. So why the hostility toward Rush in particular? Yes, he’s the biggest and most influential. But Rush is also uniquely powerful in keeping conservatives from demoralization – a key objective of the liberal media. Conservatives are understandably glum about their erstwhile champions in Washington, so ingloriously surrendering to liberal pressures. The left would like nothing more than to keep conservatives glum. A McCain nomination would go a long way to making conservatives want to stay home and stew on Election Day.

Tom Brokaw offering advice to Republicans about how to win elections is like Rush Limbaugh offering advice to the network anchors about how to stop the bleeding of their ever-declining ratings. It’s no doubt heard by the recipient of the unsolicited advice as just so much noise from someone who doesn’t really wish you smashing success.

The only difference is this: Brokaw’s advice for the Republican Party is terrible. Limbaugh’s advice for the networks – try to make a balanced newscast instead of "drive-by" partisan target practice -- would actually be helpful advice. But they’ll never accept it.

Rush kept saying yesterday

Rush kept saying yesterday and today (paraphrasing): Somebody needs to tell these guys I'm not on the ballot!

The MSM hates the competition

There's another angle to this hatred of Rush.  It probably goes without saying in this forum, but I'll say the obvious anyway.  Rush is by far the man most responsible for driving a wedge in the liberal monopoly of the MSM.  Certainly others have come along, and some have had a major impact, but it was Rush that got it started way back in 1988.  Unlike the '60's and '70's, not everyone believes it when Cronkite's professional heirs try to tell us "That's the way it is."  A lot of Americans know enough to be suspicious  of the MSM's pronouncements, and the more vocal ones will call them on it.

If the day ever came that the MSM could knock Rush from his lofty perch, the gleeful cackles from the lefties in the MSM would be deafening.  When Rush went through his drug rehab and legal troubles, the MSM had his career's grave dug, the tombstone carved, and the obit written, but the Rush phenomenon refused to die.  They're looking for the day when they can dance on his metaphorical grave.  (The sick ones probably want to do it for real.)

Rush's grandfather lived past the age of 100.  I hope the MSM ponders the possibility of another 40+ years of Rush.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

If Rush can survive 8 yrs. of Clinton

If Rush can Survive 8 yrs of Clinton, then McCain winning a Primary in NH isn't going to kill off Rush and Company from the Airways.

I have a new Litmus Test for a Presidential Candidate, Any Candidate (as Rush says) is "willing to get government involved in regulating away "climate change."" does NOT get my vote.

The Question is.....after Bush has gone over to the Gore idiots....what Candidate is left that hasn't bought the Global Warming Baloney ?

Stimulis: Congress and the president are now agreed on remedies that will not work, expending money they do not have, to fix a problem that may not exist.  Steve Chapman

JT

Not to mention a couple divorces, publicized drug addiction, pretty-much complete hearing loss ...

Limbaugh LIVES for this stuff.

Why should Limbaugh Pause?

It really does get to Brokaw in whoring his new book making like Franken and Olberman to gain publicity that Limbaugh is more intelligent and doesn't have to pause, because he knows what he is going to say.

Jack Benny.........hey why don't you pause before doing a joke?

Chuck Norris...........hey why don't you pause before kicking a criminal so he can shoot you?

George Bush.........hey why don't you pause before hitting bin Laden........be like Bill Clinton as that was so successful?

Rush is the best news analysis and best honing of minds the media has ever created. I benefitted greatly from his ability.........so well in fact that at times the past few years I have been 2 months to 2 weeks ahead of Limbaugh........perhaps though Rush can not reveal all he sees as the news cycles have to catch up.

Brokaw is used up and tossed to the side. Limbaugh will still be successfully on air for as long as he wants to be.

Limbaugh is where he is, because Pop taught him well.

Headline!

MSM Dinosaur claims New Warm-Blooded Mammals will Die Out Soon.

Claims "They don't pause enough, that's a sure sign they're done for".

Rush and the media's short memory

Obviously these wishful thinkers who hope Rush will just go away forget their own words.   Back during the days of the Clintons, "they" were saying that it was only challenging the Clintons that made him successful.  Next, "they" predicted that when George W. Bush was elected, the lack of opposition in the WH would destroy Rush's popularity.

Now, laughably, "they" are at it again.

RJ, "they" are insane...

Isn't the very definition of insanity to continue to do something that fails (call for the "end" of limbaugh), hoping for a different result?

"They" do not even try to understand Limbaugh, just trash him, and miscontrue all of his beliefs. "racist, sexist, bigot, homophobe"24-7 from "them".

Such a lame bunch of wonks

RJ and VT -

The Twain quote:

"The news of my demise has been greatly exaggerated."

Might fit well here.

I wouldn't bet against Limbaugh in a "Name That Tune" contest (insensitive, I realize, but making a strong point here)

The MSM has a dream, that

The MSM has a dream, that someday, Hillary or Obama will be in office, the Republicans will be down to twenty liberal senators and one hundred moderate congressmen, and Rush Limbaugh will not be on the air. Just like in the good ol' days...

The MSM, Insanity and Exaggeration...

They all fit nicely together don't you think?

Drill- The Twain quote is very fitting for Rush's "situation" indeed.

How empty must the MSM's be to go after a pundit? It is very telling that these people feel the need to continually trash el Rushbo. I guess they are trying to grab at the guy on the top of the heap...

God knows they are in a death spiral (the MSM), and jumping on Rush just makes them accelerate, downwards.

Hope springs

Hope springs eternal.........LOL

  If there had never been

If there had never been a Tom Brokaw we would never notice.

If there had never been a Rush the world would be different.

How true.

How true.

     If Rush hates

If Rush hates McCain, he must be the best alternative to a neoconservative since they took the party hostage.

Nice to be Back!

The real agenda!

Why else would the NY times and the rest of the MSM be in bed with Jorge McCain?

"The left would like nothing more than to keep conservatives glum. A McCain nomination would go a long way to making conservatives want to stay home and stew on Election Day."

That pretty much sums it up..... Make everyone lose hope... and it seems to be working.

"When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat"         R. Reagan

Last year, these clowns on

Last year, these clowns on the left were talking about reinstituting the "Fairness" Doctrine because Rush Limbaugh was too influential.  Now they're writing his obituary because he's not influential enough.  So, does this mean that they're going to back off the "Fairness" Doctrine push?  Doubtful.  He's as influential as ever, but his power has limitations.  Surely even he can't prevent Democrats and "Independents" from crossing party lines in open primaries (New Hampshire & South Carolina for starters) to poison the process by voting for McCain.

Copying a phrase of one of

Copying a phrase of one of my favorite people: They can get Rush’s microphone when they pry it from his cold dead hands!

Goodbye Republican Road

I am a
conservative that believes the Republican party no longer represents me. Even if I would set aside my conservative
beliefs I must ask why I would vote for a leader of the Republican majority
Congress that was not able to support great initiatives led by the Republican
President.

John
McCain was and is the worst offender in a long list of Congressional Republican
offenders. It makes me ill when people
claim that John McCain is such a strong hawk on the Islamo-Fascist war. This is the same man that wants to close
Gitmo, do away with water-boarding, and have open borders. He does not get it.

When you
add to this the blatant disregard for the Constitution as an originalist
understands it and his cavorting with Democrats to undermine the power of the
US President you only have one
option....not to vote for him. Chances
are high that I will not vote for President in this election. I simply can not vote for the front runners
of either party at this time. In fact, I would rather vote for the Democrat
than McCain because at the very least they are honest Socialists.

Many have
said that this is throwing away my vote and not doing my duty as a citizen. I
disagree. Voting for the lesser of two evils when neither of the two evils have
anything positive to offer is simply voting for evil. (No I don't think McCain is evil)

The
Republican party means nothing to me anymore.
There was a time that I would vote straight ticket because I wanted the
best opportunity to fill the czarist judgeships that became vacated when the
gang of 14 pulled a coup. We still have
judges sitting in committee awaiting to be passed to the floor for a vote. These are people that have been interviewed
in 2006!!! The man that is responsible
for this is the one that you say I should hold my nose and vote for? NEVER!

Will
America go to Hell because I don't vote...no...America is going to Hell whether
I vote or not.

dwill, Thank you...you

dwill,

Thank you...you spoke volumes for me...I could not agree more.
