Bozell Column: 2007's Winners and Losers

Photo of Brent Bozell.

For America’s celebrity-watching media, 2007 was the Year of Spears, about which we should breathe a sigh of relief that Western civilization survived. The year began with increasingly erratic Britney Spears popping in and out of rehab stints. Then she shaved her head in the spring, a move that screamed that the pop star’s moves were more crazy than calculated by publicists. The year ended with the news that Britney’s 16-year-old sister Jamie Lynn Spears, a star of the children’s channel Nickelodeon, was pregnant.

Had the youngest Spears sister been cast as a tawdry teenage tramp on “Desperate Housewives,” her real-world behavior would be seen as less scandalous. But Jamie Lynn Spears has been a fairly wholesome star on Nickelodeon since she joined the kiddie sketch-comedy show “All That” at the tender age of 11. She’s currently the cool title character of the show “Zoey 101,” set at a boarding school, a show watched by millions of grade-schoolers. So much for role models.

At the center of this vortex is the mother, Lynne Spears, who had her publishing contract “delayed indefinitely” for a book on parenting celebrity children, now that it’s painfully apparent she doesn’t know diddly about parenting celebrity children. The Spears family and their long trail of tabloid embarrassments make them some of 2007's biggest losers. Let’s review some other cultural winners and losers from the year just elapsed.

Losers: Barry Bonds and every other professional baseball player caught cheating with steroids, human growth hormone, and other doping methods. Most baseball fans will forever put a huge asterisk on Bonds breaking the career home run record of Henry Aaron, and this is correct. Bonds “broke” the record in a new way. He took Aaron’s record and smashed its integrity like it was a priceless stolen vase.

Winners: The wider world of Major League Baseball, for finally publicly acknowledging the doping scandal that is ruining the national pastime. Add to this “winners” slot those modern superstars of baseball who never succumbed to the temptation of using artificial enhancements.

Losers: Jim Belushi and the makers of the ABC sitcom “According to Jim,” for a story plot taking us literally into the toilet, with Belushi defecating out his wedding ring (complete with a clank) while his wife and other relatives hid in the bathtub behind the shower curtain. But not before his sister-in-law unloaded an "earthy" story about how “last week, I was up on the roof throwing water balloons I filled with my own urine.”

Winners: Congressman Bobby Rush, for organizing a congressional hearing on the socially harmful impact of gangsta rap. Add to this slot the rapper Master P, who apologized for making gangsta rap, and now says he doesn’t want even his own children to listen to his work in that genre.

Losers: The shock jocks Opie and Anthony, for hosting a character named “Homeless Charlie” making jokes on their satellite radio show about the violent rape of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. They continued to laugh as “Charlie” sickly imagined punching Rice in the face and raping Laura Bush “to death.” Opie and Anthony then suggested he add Queen Elizabeth to his list of victims. The regrettable “ho” comment Don Imus threw at the Rutgers women’s basketball team paled in comparison to this disgusting set of gags. These two are still on the air.

Winners: Walden Media, which placed more well-made family-friendly movies in the cineplexes in 2007, from “Bridge to Terabithia” to the brand-new, critically acclaimed “The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep.”

Losers: The filmmakers of “Hounddog,” for casting 12-year-old actress Dakota Fanning (“The Cat in the Hat”) in a five-minute rape scene. The movie was screened at Robert Redford’s Sundance film festival. While child-actor advocates vehemently protested, Miss Fanning insisted people see this spectacle and be “touched” when they “see the truth” of the movie’s theme of loneliness on screen. The New York Times attacked critics who protested the exploitation of Fanning: “She’s growing up. Get used to it.”

Losers: Tasteless anti-religious entertainers. Kathy Griffin who grasped an Emmy Award for Best Reality TV Show and proclaimed “Suck it, Jesus!” New Line Pictures spent a mint on “The Golden Compass,” part of an anti-Christian trilogy of children’s books by atheist author Philip Pullman, but the box-office take was far lower than expectations.

Winners: Christmas cartoons that still score highly in the ratings on the major networks. Even new Christmas cartoons, like the more modern, ironic take of “Shrek the Halls,” were ratings victories for ABC. But it’s especially heartening that millions of Americans never get tired of scenes from “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” with Linus reading the nativity story and the kids singing “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” despite the gnashing teeth of people who hate the outpouring of any Christmas spirit.

On to 2008.

The NYT's comment on Ms.

The NYT's comment on Ms. Fanning's on-screen rape, “She’s growing up. Get used to it.” Is aphalling. Rape at any age is a horrific crime.

Oh, yeah, 12 years old is

Oh, yeah, 12 years old is plenty old enough to act out a rape scene.

<sarc off>

I wonder how they "prepped" her to act that scene. You know, the director usually gives the actor some instruction, some visualization technique to encourage them to display the emotions they want to see. Wouldn't you have loved to hear the director's instruction to Miss Fanning before filming the scene?

I brought up the age thing the other day in the thread about the 17 year old's semi-nude photo on the cover of a NYT insert. The mother's rationale: "she's an old soul in a young body."

How parents will rationalize for their children when it involves fame is just amazing.

motherbelt

It is not like they are glamourizing her rape scene. I still disagree with you about the NYT pic. You make it sound the mother forced her to the pic, would you still be as angry if it was her daughters decision?

 Shawn in the interest and

Shawn in the interest and celebration of tasteless free speech I am sure a lot of lib's applaude an actual 12 yr. old's acted out rape scene in a movie. I mean that's about as high art to the borgeois as you can get, unless you go a lower age, or show an actual abortion or something. I know you are mostly in the middle on most issues so I'm not taking a shot at you. But aren't there enough 18 yr. old's, you know consenting adult's in Hollywood that look like 12 yr. old's?

I mean hell when I was growing up Ralph Macchio was the "Karate Kid" at 23 and I'll bet that most of the cast of "Welcome Back Kotter" were pushing 30.

Not to mention all of those gratuitous sex, drinking and drug use movies (which were some of my favorite by the way) of the eighties all featured actor's and actresses well into adulthood.

When does pushing the envelope, for pushing the envelopes sake go to far and become bad taste?

Where I come from a seventeen yr. old doesn't make her own decision's especially when it comes to exposing her self.

Hi Blazer, long time no see, Merry Belated Christmas.

"Not to mention all of those gratuitous sex, drinking and drug use
movies (which were some of my favorite by the way) of the eighties all
featured actor's and actresses well into adulthood."

I feel it is different if the mother forced the girl the girl to do the shoot and was in it for herself, much like Michael Jackson, Todd Bridges and Gary Colemans parents were, but I believe it was her own decision. First of all there was no nudity, only cleavage and second she is old enough to drive.

Hey I feel lots of movies are in bad taste, but as long as they don't force me watch it, who am I to tell them not to?

Hey bud, Merry belated

Hey bud, Merry belated Christmas to you too, hope it was great. I agree that a parent should not exploit a child for their own financial gain or ego, but like I said there are plenty of young consenting adult's that look the part.

I dont' watch, or am forced to watch kiddie porn or snuff either, but when do we get to the point where what's deemed acceptable start's to cross the threshold, and we should start worrying about densification, morally and spritually ?

Where's the line?

Please dont' give me the b.s. about free will, it's not I who am concerned for myself, it's my children. As you know you cant' be there at all hour's of the day to supervise.

Sorry I did not respond sooner, history making game on tv and all :-)

"Where's the line?"

I'm not sure how to answer that question. On tv there are already obsenity rules in place. On Cable? I like to be able to watch what I want and I hate limitations of freedom of speech. It is something I am very passionate about.

So back to your question..hmmm. Beastiality, murder, incest, hate messages' ie white supremist spreading their message, underage children nudity/sex. That is what I can see being over the line over the top of my head.

You can't be there for your children 24/7, but there is thing called the v-chip and If you do want your children watching certain programs just block them out.

 I'm just talking about

I'm just talking about people regulating themselves and holding their peer's to the fire Shawn, getting our sense of good taste and shame back.

It's one thing if you have to go looking for it on your own accord, but it's another thing to have it beamed in unexpectedly, or pounded into your psyche day in and day out without free will or choice through the public airwaves.

I am passionate about our first and second amendment's and would defend them with my life if necessary, even if a liberal was impugned , in fact some of the literature I enjoy or have enjoyed at one time or another has been controversial and called for censure through the ages.

Anyhoo this is probably a non-topic everyone has their own opinion and threshold concerning this topic, this is just my 2 cent's.

}}---> Where's the line Shawn

Shawn,

If your reasoning hinges on whether it was the parent or the child who gave consent, obviously your "line" is drawn at an age somewhat younger than 12.

Sick, Shawn.  Really sick.

There, you see?  No namecalling.

the magic is 18. You can make whatever decisions you want with the exception of drink alchohol. I believe there should be no nudity let alone porn before that.

That picture I was talking about was a 17 old topless with her breast blurred out. There was no nudity and it was a sexy pose, no worse than anything Britney did befor 18 and I am not a huge Britney fan, I am just doing a comparision.

That's fine Shawn, I've had

That's fine Shawn, I've had a few drink's tonight, and maybe even a little touchy, just keep in mind though that "well she was old enough to drive" is the slogan of statuatory rapist's, child molestor's, and pedophiles everywhere.

This hit's a little bit close to home with me, and albeit probably not fair to you. At any rate, good night.

Tomorrow's another day, and with it other subject's. Hopefully we'll not return to this one.

Ever.

Night Blazer, Wow grouch before your coffee and at night when you had a few drinks. Married? lol

I can't promise to not talk about it again because it is a subject i'm very into and a major issue for me in the election. I was telling cool arrow at least I don't trash Huckabee or endorse Ron Paul or Thompson in a thread where it does not belong.

Have a great night Blazer, think I might down a few myself. :-)

}}---> Shawn

Thanks for coming to your senses.  12 yrs old is too young with or without parental/child consent.

I ♣ My Seal

cool arrow

Your welcome cool arrow, but just to make sure we are on the same page, I find it was ok for her to film that scene.

}}---> Shawn, say what ???

I took this from her bio.

Hannah Dakota Fanning (born February 23 1994) is an American child actress.

Perhaps this explains your permissive attitude towards 12yr olds in such a scene.  Maybe 12yrs old (when the movie was shot) is close enough to 18 in your book, and maybe you'd give her a drivers license too, but you're way off base on this one.

No apology to you, Shawn.  I'm afraid your sense of morality is getting more and more twisted now that you've got that 46" screen to get you closer to the action.

It's just that I notice if it has anything to do with porn, Shawn is in the thread immediately.  And there's no doubt which side he'll be on.

I ♣ My Seal

cool

"It's just that I notice if it has anything to do with porn, Shawn is in
the thread immediately. And there's no doubt which side he'll be on."

Ok twisting my words again Cool Arrow, you are quite good at it. I believe in participating in any thread that has to do with free speech, not porn. At least I post in the appropriate thread. I do not go on a football thread and talk about how Mike Huckabee wants to put a hit on Tom Brady.

Also, I did not even remotely say Dakota Fanning should do porn, i said that she was doing a fake scene for a film. She did not really get raped, It was acting. whereas porn or nudity is very real.

}}---> Shawn, you're losing it

  1. This is not a football thread and I didn't make any claim concerning Brady and Huckabee
  2. This opening article to this thread introduced the Dakota Fanning scene.  There was no introduction of information about a 17yr. old.
  3. You, Shawn, introduced the concept that such a violent sex scene is ok if the child approved, but not OK if it was only parentally approved.
  4. There was no mention of a 17yr. old until you mentioned it.  Nice job of backpeddling.

No, I'll stand by my comments in this thread.

I ♣ My Seal

Cool Arrow

Ok Cool you are taking this the wrong way and perhaps its a little over your head, but let me explain this to you slowly k?

No you never said anything about Mike Huckabee in a football thread, I was just comparing people that have tried to mention how bad Huckabee is, in every thread they can find. For example on this Thread, Mike Huckabee will be endorsing gay porn on public airwaves. I guess you never use off humor huh?

The 17 yr old was in the thread a few days ago re? a 17 that posed with her breast blurred out. I am sorry I should have let you know sooner,

I have not seen the scene and I have no idea how graphic its looks like, but I am sure it is no worse than a 11 year old, putting a crucifix in her v****a and saying your M*ther S*cks C**ks in Hell.

}}---> Shawn's Huckabee moment?

So, without giving any clarification beforehand, you bring up something from another thread and apply it to Dakota Fanning.

You might want to read this thread from the start and realize that your comments look especially disgusting given the topic was Dakota Fanning (13yr old) and not some 17yr old from a couple of days ago.

Sorry, Shawn, but it looks like you're the one hijacking the thread with an unrelated story.

I ♣ My Seal

Cool Arrow

sigh, I was just hoping you would take me for my word instead of being petty and asking for details. Oky Doky whatever "rolls eyes"

Not the main topic but the thread that spawned all these post between me and blazer till you decided to jump in without looking. This is what motherbelt said.

"I brought up the age thing the other day in the thread about the 17
year old's semi-nude photo on the cover of a NYT insert. The mother's
rationale: "she's an old soul in a young body." "

I replied to her and said I disagreed with her. She in turn was talking aboutThis Thread. I hope I have explained this fully so you can comprehend that I did not hijack this thread and it was you jumping in when you did not know the whole story. Thx Cool Arrow.

Cool,

Give Shawnee a break, would you please?

This has been a topic for a day or two, I know what he meant.

Be nice....we're trying to draw him into the conservative camp, after all.

Thanks, & Happy New Year to you.

I was afk for a while there attending to work.  But let me offer this:

"But just to make sure we are on the same page, I find it was ok for her to film that scene." (Shawn referencing the Dakota Fanning scene.)

I find it very difficult to believe even the most secular wing of the Conservative movement would appreciate such an opinion.

I also find it difficult to be that inclusive.

2007 Year of the spears

we hope 2008 is the year of the plowshares

"how would i know? if i knew everything i'd run for God" ----crpl Klinger

Goodness a minority

Herbert W. Armstrong of the Worldwide Church of God often quoted a business axiom from his former days in mercantile that when the majority of Americans were honest, then the nation made money by God's blessing, but when the majority of Americans were dishonest then the nation lost money.

There are always the Kathy Griffin's slapping at the Lord. In Billy Dixon's memoirs he relates the story of men playing poker under a tree and it rained.........one asked if they should stop, but the rest apparently cursed. At that moment, lightning struck the tree and the only one who did not die was the one who thought they should stop.

People considered that a sign by God and in a lawless land behaved a bit better in a land of loud mouthed sinful psychopaths.

I only get sad when I see how much America has degraded. I wonder where in the mind of a sperm donor it does not SCREAM that sexing a 16 year old child is a horrid thing to do. I wonder where in the soul of a liberal that using Jesus Name in vain slapping at Him is not funny and Jesus in His humor will have the last laugh as he replays that on judgment day or sooner.

Finally none of this deviant behavior to tasteless Belushi comedy would ever occur if it were not for society accepting it. Whores did not plague Washington DC in the Civil War except society accepted it.
The day Roseanne Barr became a liability to ABC is the day she like Rosie O'Donnell were given the boot..........the trash liberal sinner sodomite at ABC are still there, but the day their jobs are in danger is the day liberals rid the media of their own.

I would submit Mr. Bozell the biggest looser is one you missed in Hollywood liberals and their worthless movies preaching American hatred lost tons of money.........and yet movie which entertained are the only ones now making money.

So Will Smith and Nicholas Cage are the winners to be included for understanding a movie is to entertain while geezer Redford, dirty old man Cruisekat and weatherworn Streep are the forever loosers.

Blessed New Year

your choice the watch lc

If you don't want to watch what is on tv LC, just change the channel. Very Simple.

Changing the channel has worked so well?

The nonsense that LC is referring to does not affect the likes of him. It is our kids that are being desensitized. Do you think they are better for it? Respecting others and their cultures is important, making gross misguided statements is never helpful. Being a parent is hard enough, now we are required to monitor every viable piece of information that can possibly reach them. This is all because of the "just change the channel" policy you advocate.

This goes far deeper as well. Hollywood has shocked us into oblivion, they themselves are the first victims of this practice, as proved by the high dysfunctional rate amongst them. We are called every name in the book because we would like to see high quality viewing, instead of 12yr olds getting raped. Yea I know, just change the channel,,,,,again.

Demonizing

I don't know a whole lot about the whole Jamie pregnancy thing, but it seems very wrong to me to demonize a teenage girl for making a really dumb decision. That kind of thing could happen to most people under the right circumstances and is entirely unsurprising given her "role models".

Shouldn't she instead be appluaded for her decision to keep the baby, despite the risk to her career?

 But maybe, just maybe Zap

But maybe, just maybe Zap we all need to get back to demonizing and villifying it so it is a stigma once again, and shameful.

It's better than the liberal alternative, which is to forcibly evict it from the womb.

Either way shameful or not, accepted or not, a life without choice should have it's chance to live until it can choose otherwise.

}}---> Jamie Spears

I have a problem getting too bent out of shape from the standpoint of This girl and her boyfriend.

They engaged in conduct not entirely uncommon to that of their previous generations.  I think a case can even be made that our generation and our baby boomer parents arbitrarily decided that 16 was way too young to couple, and thus, too young to marry.

Many of us had grandparents and certainly, great grandparents, who married this young.  The "right thing" has now become either abortion or raising the resultant child away from the father.

I'm hoping these two are just hopelessly in love of each other and can withstand the scrutiny and scowls of the public.

"I'm hoping these two are just hopelessly in love of each other and can withstand the scrutiny and scowls of the public."

I hope your right. That and hopefully they raise the child as real parents. They best not be takeing any advice from the older sister.

Blazer,

Demonizing people for getting pregnant won't stop people from getting pregnant, it will only cause more people to get abortions. Kids having sex at that age really don't give any thought the the consequences such as pregnancy. The only consideration most sexually active teens would give to it is slapping on a condom. This behavior, of course, can largely be attributed to our wonderful sex ed program.
