One of the Man from Hope’s consistently amazing lines is that the press doesn’t offer the Clintons enough credit for all their good works. The latest example came on the trail in Keene, New Hampshire, where the Associated Press found him whining about how the press hasn’t underlined the vast chasm in experience between his wife and Barack Obama. "Bill Clinton said Tuesday that if reporters covered the candidates' public records better, his wife's presidential bid would be far ahead of her rivals,” reported AP.
Clinton obviously believes his presidency was a Golden Era, a time when peace and prosperity graced America. The Clintons want the press to replay a sort of glowing Harry and Linda Thomason propaganda movie about The Way They Were, with a soundtrack by Barbra Streisand.
Oh, baloney. The last thing Bill or his wife want is for the press to scrutinize their public records. The media have been absolutely AWOL on this front for fifteen years. He knows it, just as he knows that his belly-aching about the press will also succeed in keeping them at bay.
How easy it would be to make a list of all the things the press could do to clear the cobwebs with thorough investigations (as opposed to the infrequent and incomplete spurt of a few negative stories). Reporters could draw up a quick list of “old news” about Hillary Clinton’s record of public malfeasance that Bill knows full well have never been resolved.
1. Hillary ordering around the White House staff to fire seven workers in the White House Travel Office for financial mismanagement, with Billy Dale accused of embezzlement. Hillary then lied to a grand jury about how she was not really involved in the firing scheme, even though staffers were writing there would be “hell to pay” if they didn’t do Hillary’s bidding. Billy Dale’s life was ruined. Two years later, it took a jury two hours to acquit him of all charges. Why did she do that? What would voters think, Mr. President?
2. Hillary making a mysterious $100,000 profit off a $1,000 investment in cattle futures with Tyson Foods lawyer Jim Blair making her trades. Was this a bribe for the governor’s wife? It certainly didn’t fit Hillary’s first fairy-tale explanation: that she made the trades just reading the Wall Street Journal. Would more focus on this still-unresolved scandal help Hillary’s campaign, Mr. President?
3. Hillary’s staffers rifling through Vince Foster’s office for documents in the hours after Foster’s death in Fort Marcy Park. One man seen leaving the scene with documents was White House aide and Hillary protege Craig Livingstone. What was he taking away? Why won’t anyone in your administration give an honest answer, Mr. President?
4. Hillary’s Rose Law Firm records “disappeared,” only to reappear in the White House residence after years of requests for documents from the independent counsel investigating her lawyering for her corrupt business partner Jim McDougal. What were they doing right outside Hillary’s private office, Mr. President?
5. Hillary demanding the need for a White House database of friends and enemies. The Clinton White House was found to be in possession of over 1,000 FBI files of Republican White House employees. At the center of the controversy again: Craig Livingstone, who told friends he was Hillary’s hire. Why were they there? How were they used?
In each of these cases – and so many more! -- the Clinton-adoring media pulled a collective hamstring and retired before the scandal was ever resolved.
According to the AP, Clinton also said “his wife's bipartisan work in the Senate proves she can accomplish her campaign's message of change, and that records matter more than rhetoric.” But Hillary couldn’t even get her massive health care plan through a Democratic House and Senate. In Carl Bernstein’s biography, he reported Hillary made enemies among Senate Democrats like Daniel Patrick Moynihan by threatening to “demonize” them if they didn’t swallow her health plan whole. Does that sound like a formula for bipartisan rule in 2009?
Looking at Hillary’s public record would also mean taking a serious look at her very liberal Senate voting record. She has a perfect 100 pro-abortion score with NARAL Pro-Choice America. Except for “gay marriage,” she’s pretty much perfect with the gay Human Rights Campaign lobby. She gets an F from the National Rifle Association. On fiscal issues, she gets an F from the National Taxpayers Union, a 14-percent score from Citizens Against Government Waste, and only a 6.7 percent score from Americans for Tax Reform. Her lifetime American Conservative Union rating is nine percent.
At every turn, whether it is scandalous behavior or a scandalously liberal voting record, Bill Clinton knows full well that if the press were really focusing “like a laser beam” on Hillary’s past, her poll ratings would be dropping, not skyrocketing.

Talk about a barfer...BJ said the other day that he thought his wife was the "most gifted person of our generation."
Oh, puhleeze.
I commented in another thread about Pat Moynihan suggesting her Senate run. Now i learn that he did this after she threatened to destroy him if he didn't sign on to her health care scheme. You gotta wonder...what was the guy thinking?? How could he possible think her being a Senator was a good idea? OK, I won't speak ill of the dead but you gotta wonder....
Edit: As for considering their record...Mr. Clinton should "be careful what you wish for...you just might get it!" By all means, Mr. former President, let's examine your wife's public record!! But you guys don't get to choose which parts of it, OK? It's all up for grabs, or you and she say nothing about anything she did before she was a Senator.

I am not going to ask if you agee with what I believe in my opinions or not but let me tell you my stances on politics and you tell me If I am a Liberal or a Conservative
Abortion, I am on the fence on this
I believe we must do whatever it takes to extract info from terrorist
I believe in separation of church and state
I believe in staying in Iraq until the job is done
I believe in a strong military
I believe in decriminalizing victimless crimes like marijuana and prostitution
I believe very much in free speech ie Howard Stern, Playboy, Porn, with the caveot that we keep in out of the hands of children
The most liberal thing I believe in is Universal health care
I believe in a strong border protection and deporting illegals
I do not believe in free medical for illegals
I do not believe in giving drivers licences to illegals
I believe in State Rights over Fed rights.
So would I be better off voting for the conservative or liberal?
Shawn
December 12, 2007 - 02:39 ET by candanceWith the exception of universal healthcare, you sound like a socially liberal Republican.

Here are a few more political stances I forgot to mention,
I believe in Euthanasia
I believe gays should be allowed in the armed foreces
I do not believe in affirmative action
I do not believe in partial birth abortion
I believe it is okay to abort a child that you know will have downs syndrome or a serious birth defect.
I said before I believe in doing what it takes to extract info from terrorist, but I do not believe in humiliating them for fun like some of those pics from abu graib or worst of all those US soldiers that raped that teenage girl while her parents watched
Again, I am not asking if you agree on my points or not, this is where I stand politically. Thx Candance
okay Shawn
December 12, 2007 - 13:24 ET by candanceeuthanasia - socially liberal, big with Democrats but not a major problem for the GOP.
gays in the Army - the GOP is split down the middle with that. I personally agree with you.
No affirmative action - then you are definitely not a Democrat. They're all about that stuff. GOP here we come.
No partial birth abortion - heresy, the Dems cry! We've got a constitutional right to it, dontcha know???? You're with the GOP again.
Aborting deformed babies - the religious right doesn't like this, but it's not a big GOP sticking point.
Raping/humiliating prisoners - where on earth did you get the idea anyone supported that? There is a difference between interrogating a suspect and just plain being mean...and even the biggest hardcore conservative would tell you it's wrong.
When you first told me you were liberal, I thought you meant you were out there like Leon. After reading your specific views, I gotta say you're more Republican than you realize. You and I agree/could find a good compromise on 90% of your ideas.
Well Shawn Sweetie
December 12, 2007 - 02:54 ET by candanceI don't know how to break it to you, but...
9 of your beliefs align right up with traditional Republicans.
3 align with liberal Republicans like Giuliani and Schwarzeneggar.

shawn228, I hope you
December 12, 2007 - 03:05 ET by fitzfongshawn228,
I hope you don't mind me butting in on this one, but as a lapsed Catholic, non-religious (but sympathetic towards Judeo-Christian ideals) fiscal conservative, I'll try to take a stab...
If you're on the fence regarding abortion, a good tie-breaker to determine your tendency toward liberalism vs. conservatism is this question: Do you support the notion of taxpayer funded abortions?
Terrorism: Conservative
Separation of Church and State: The expression isn't actually in the Constitution, though that's not necessarily relevant to your question as such. The platitudinal usage of the the phrase suggests liberal sympathies.
Iraq: Conservative
Decriminalizing victimless crimes: Typically liberals are thought to be aligned with this way of thinking. But it really isn't that clear cut. How many feminists are in favor of prostitution? Hell, even Bill Buckley has been known to favor legalization of drugs. This one's a wash.
Howard Stern, Playboy, et al: This one isn't clear cut, either. Liberals trumpet the free speech angle (which is odd since they want to bring back the "Fairness" Doctrine)...but most conservatives take the market approach (i.e. if you don't like it, change the channel). It gets a little more cloudy when you bring the religious conservatives and the militant feminists into the argument. As they say, politics make strange bedfellows. Another wash.
Universal Health Care: That's bordering on Marxist.
Border protection & deporting illegals: Overall, conservatives like this better than liberals do...but then you have the Labor Unions chiming in about lower wages. Conservative.
Free Medical Care to Illegals: Conservative
Drivers Licenses for Illegals: AKA Democrat back door to voter fraud...Conservative
States Rights: Conservative
Would you be better off voting for a conservative or a liberal? We'd all be better off voting for a conservative. ;-)

December 12, 2007 - 22:51 ET by shawn228Thx for your input fitz :) I believe you and I have had this discussion not too long ago. I believe it was around Thanksgiving.
Yes there are many issues, I believe I think much more like a conservative than a Liberal. The Free speech point that you bring up, i'm not sure I agree with you there. The extreme religious right scare the heck out of me, they want to take away anything that they deem indecent. For example, take the author the this thread Mr. Brent Bozell. He is obviously a very intelligent man but he is extremely set in his ways. His other site parentstv.org .
His intentions are good, he wants to keep smut away from kids, but imo he is trying to impose his will on everybody else. I am convinced if he had his way, he would take away all smut period. Obviously free speech is not the single most important issue on voting for a candidate but free speech to me is easily top 3. I'm just afraid that the GOP candidate will try to suppress freedom of expression to appease their base.
Shawn, anytime a law,
December 12, 2007 - 23:43 ET by MikeBShawn, anytime a law, especially a law with criminal penalties, is passed that is a group of people imposing their will on everybody else. Brent Bozell has an opinion about something being right or wrong, and is in favor of a law reflecting his views. He is no different than anyone else. The persons who disagree with him also want laws passed reflecting their views. Ideally, whatever our elected representatives decide is best for us as a group (as opposed to whatever is most likely to get themselves re-elected)is what the law becomes. The logical result of "you can't impose your views on everyone else through laws" is anarchy, which allows the strongest to impose their will on everyone.

December 12, 2007 - 23:55 ET by shawn228I never said you cannot impose your views through laws. I just said that the extremely Christian right scares me. Brent Bozell is an example of one of those people.
The FCC have ignored smut and indecency for yrs and tv got raunchier and raunchier, it took one aereola at half time to change all of that. All of a sudden everything was about indecency. I was just telling fitz that is why I am reluctant to vote for the GOP front runner because of the pandering to the religious right. That is why I am a Guiliani fan, he is kind of in the middle

December 13, 2007 - 00:53 ET by shawn228Most of the time the religious rights positions are more insync with the GOP nominee. It is very hard to win the Presidency without their votes.
Obviously overturning Roe V Wade and appointing conservative judges to the SCOTUS is most important thing to them but stuff like prayer in school, taking away gay rights and taking away smut is important to them as well
Right after the whole Janet Jackson fiasco, congress upped the fine from indecency on tv from 30,000 to I believe 300,000. The FCC decided to fine Clear Channel for Howard Stern, so he took his show to satelite. Now the FCC wants to regulate satelite....a service that we pay for. The extreme Christian right would love to take away pornography, bad language and basically anything to do with titalation because it is a sin. They scare me a lot and that is the main reason why I still prefer the Liberals. "for now"

Shawn, if you fear people
December 13, 2007 - 02:06 ET by BlazerShawn, if you fear people trying to legislate free speech then let us not forget that alot Dem's want to try and legislate (conservative) free speech and opinion through use of the un-fairness doctrine.
If a Dem is elected to POTUS and with a Democrat Congress this issue will no doubt be right back on the table, conservative talk radio and free enterprise being the boogie man to them that it is.
Say what you will, but I dont' think you'll find too many people on the right advocating shutting down the other sides ability to recieve information and formulate opinion.
A good amount of Politician's on the left feel their better off formulating your opinion's for you.

I do not like the fact they want to bring the fairness doctrine. That is ridiculus and hypicritcal. HRC is one of the reasons that the fine for indecency shot up to 300k and she tried to make a big deal about a video game called "Grand theft auto" No Liberals try to censor anything to do with religion or hurting ones feelings. That being said, I still feel they would be more fair for free speech than a conservative would.
pandering?

Vote for whomever you want, just don't act like your superior to those that have morals.

December 13, 2007 - 01:44 ET by candanceI think you're freaking out a little much about the whole freedom of speech thing. Guys like Bozell don't want porn or profanity done away with - they just want it more off the beaten path so it's not in everyone's faces and where their kids can see it.
Remember when we talked about this on the Tila Tequila thread...it's not an issue of suppressing speech. It's an issue of network TV and public radios pushing it while cable forces us to subsidize it. If you wanna see photos of nekked women, then okay, but when I go to the mall I don't want to see them plastered all over the walls, and I don't want to walk with my eyes on the floor to avoid it.
So lighten up a little on the religious right. It's a myth that we're out to censor people.

December 13, 2007 - 02:19 ET by shawn228Hi Candance,
Yes I remember the Tila Tequaila thread. I agree with your points about having a right to smut but not having it in your face.
The thing is I feel there are people that are more extreme than you are, and those are the ones that scare me.I first heard of Mr. Bozell yrs ago when I used to watch WWE known as WWF about a decade back and. WWF was on the USA network"cable" Mr. Bozell was getting tired of what he deemed as indecent so he tried to get advertisers to yank their support. It ended up Mr. Bozell had to issue a written apology to Vince Macmahon head of the WWE. " I don't remember the reason"
This is not just about porn, this is about choice on what we can watch on regular tv and cable.Again I appreciate Mr. Bozell supporting this site, I just do not agree with some of his politics.
well Shawn
December 13, 2007 - 02:21 ET by candanceThere are people more to the extreme everywhere. I know there are some crazy (Westboro Baptist) people out there (Keith) who use Christ as an excuse (Warren Jeffs) to be mean. But seriously, the mainstream church isn't like that - you saw in that thread everyone except that one dude agreed with us.
The GOP is not getting bought by Westboro Baptist any time soon, and like they said above, let the far left take over through the Dems and there will only be free speech for them.
I agree Shawn on at least
December 13, 2007 - 02:31 ET by BlazerI agree Shawn on at least the issue of anything one pay's to watch read, etc., that's free enterprise and freedom of choice.
In a prior post I brought up the issue of the un-fairness doctrine and how liberal Democrat's thought it should be legislated in the public's best interest, on the premise the public own's a certain allotment of the broadcast spectrum radio and television.
If liberal Democrat's believe they should be able to regulate talk radio in the public's best interest with what they percieve as conservative domination of the AM band, then do you believe it's fair that 'all' of the public broadcast spectrum should be regulated in the interest of both sides, with the liberal domination of the FM band, television and radio ?

As a limited government
December 13, 2007 - 02:32 ET by fitzfongAs a limited government type, I understand your fear of the religious right when it comes to free speech. But it cuts both ways. Liberals have issues with free speech, as well. While the religious right may rail against speech or content that they find indecent, liberals try to limit political speech via big government (thus, the "Fairness" Doctrine). In addition, you'll find plenty of non-religious liberals attempting to limit free speech for reasons of morality (racism/sexism)...Tom Leykis and Howard Stern come to mind. How long ago did Imus get sacked for the "nappy-headed hos" comment? You didn't hear too many on the religious right clammoring for his dismissal. They were intelligent enough not to listen to him in the first place and didn't care whether or not his low-rated program remained on the air. To me, certain extremists on the religious right and much of the left are as guilty as each other for attempting to limit free speech and to grow government. As a limited government type, I'm irritated by both.
thank you fitz

December 13, 2007 - 22:01 ET by shawn228Sorry it took me so long to respond, I just got back from work a few minutes ago. Yes the Fairness Doctrine is very silly. AM radio is just like TV it is survival at the fittest, you either do it right or you get elliminated. Hannity and Rush must be doing something right because the bring in many more viewers than Randi Rhodes or Sam Sedar.
As far as Imus goes, I would compare that to the whole Dixie Chicks fiasco. They used their freedom of speech and fans went bezerk. Same in the case with Imus, the radio stations canned him because they were afraid of public outcry. I was not that offended by either comment btw.
Shawn,Thanks for writing
December 13, 2007 - 22:42 ET by fitzfongShawn,
Thanks for writing back. Not to take too much issue with you, but I believe the Imus vs. the Dixie Chicks controversies make for an apples to oranges comparison. In the case of Imus, he made comments that offended people who didn't listen to his show to begin with. No doubt some Media Matters types were monitoring his show to try and create a scandal where none existed. They pulled out a quote from his show, sent it to various media outlets who played the soundbite ad nauseum. Then, the shakedown brigade, led by Al Sharpton threatened Imus' employers with "sanctions" if they didn't sack him immediately. He was subsequently threatening Imus' sponsors in an attempt to tie the hands of Imus' employers. Viacom and NBC subsequently made a business decision to get him off their books, because they realized he wasn't bringing in enough revenue to make standing up to Sharpton and Company worth the trouble. Sharpton participated in the silencing of free speech (not that I cared much, Imus is an arrogant blowhard whom I always found irritating, but I digress). In the case of the Dixie Chicks, despite what they'd have you believe in their dishonest and self-serving movie, they weren't victims. And they weren't institutionally silenced for "speaking their minds", either. Natalie Maines, a country musician, shot her mouth off overseas, claiming that she was embarrassed to be from the same State as the President. Now, this might appear to be a stereotype, but there's truth in it...a good percentage of Country Music fans are conservative, or at least supported the President at that time. The overwhelming response from Country Music fans (including one-time Dixie Chicks fans) was negative. The listeners rebelled...and Country Music Stations responded to the listener revolt by not playing Dixie Chick music...because the audience didn't want it. The Chicks then played victim, sucked up to the New York/Hollywood music industry and effectively told their Nashville fans to piss off. The NARAs crowd, typically dubious of Country Music yet always willing to exploit musicians who skew left, promptly obliged...giving them a bunch of Grammys for albums that no one bought. And career victims were born. In the Imus case, it wasn't the market that got him off the air, it was hysteria brought on by people who didn't listen to his show to begin with. In the Dixie Chicks case, they cursed the market, and the market sorted them out.
Cheers.
