Bozell Column: Rush Limbaugh, Vindicated

The ruckus over the Rush Limbaugh "phony soldiers" statement is dying down. It ought not to. There is a huge story here.

What did Rush say? In a September 26 conversation with a caller to his program who claimed the media never interview "real soldiers," but just people out of the blue, Rush added for emphasis, "the phony soldiers."

The left saw its opportunity and pounced with a vengeance. Led by the George Soros-funded and Hillary Clinton-inspired Media Matters outfit, it unleashed a scorched-earth attack on Limbaugh for insulting the military, stating that any servicemen or women who might oppose the war in Iraq had been defamed by the talk show host as "phony soldiers."

The television networks, newspapers, and leftist blog sites were ablaze with stories about Democratic outrage. There were calls for his show to be yanked from the Armed Forces Radio Network. There were demands that Clear Channel make Rush apologize, and that advertisers pull their sponsorship.

Presidential candidates denounced him. Congressional leaders -- the usual crowd of Reid, Pelosi, Harkin, Kerry, etc. -- denounced him. A formal congressional resolution condemning Limbaugh was drawn up by Rep. Mark Udall (D- CO) and reportedly had over one hundred Democrat (and one Republican) signers. The message was clear: Limbaugh's anti-military insult could not, and would not be tolerated.

How disingenuous was this leftist attack on Limbaugh? Let us count the ways.

1. Before reviewing the facts of the case, one has to shake his head in disbelief that anyone would accuse Limbaugh of an anti-military bias. A day doesn't go by when he isn't praising our military on his radio program. He's visited the troops on the battlefield in Afghanistan, and brought comfort to our wounded at the Walter Reed Army hospital. He's raised and donated millions to military charities. It is no wonder that he is the single most popular personality on the Armed Forces Radio Network.

2. Less than two minutes after uttering the words "phony soldiers," Limbaugh elaborated on the subject, explaining exactly what he meant by the term. He named one Jesse Macbeth as an example of a phony soldier. Macbeth had become an overnight darling of the far left, a self-described Iraq war veteran and Purple Heart recipient man who posted a YouTube video denouncing American military atrocities he'd witnessed. Except he was never awarded a Purple Heart. He was never in Iraq. In fact, he was never in the military, period. He was tossed out of boot camp after four months. Macbeth is now in prison serving a five-month term for falsifying Army records and applying falsely for veterans' benefits. Limbaugh was right.

Limbaugh also pointed that that he wasn't the first to discuss the Macbeth phony soldier story. Brian Ross had filed a report on this man several nights before, on ABC’s World News. Mr. Ross even used the term "phony soldier" -- and not a soul on the left found fault with that.

3. So the left returned with another charge: Limbaugh had used the plural, "phony soldiers," therefore Limbaugh's sole example -- Macbeth -- was inadequate. So are there any other "phony soldiers" out there? Jeffrey Sullivan, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington, thinks so. Besides prosecuting Macbeth, he's prosecuted another five "phony soldiers." Jim O'Neill, the assistant inspector general for investigations at the Veterans Administration, confirms that the federal government is presently conducting another 60 such "stolen valor" cases. Rush was right, in spades.

And when Rush fought back, that military hawk Sen. Tom Harkin took to the floor of the Senate to denounce him for engaging in a publicity stunt, for ratings. In other words, Rush had no right to defend himself.

4. The left knows Rush was correct, yet, just as with the spurious racist accusations against Bill O'Reilly the week before, the attacks continued for days, unabated. This is no accident, and no coincidence. Yesterday it was MoveOn. Today it's Media Matters. This is the far left at its repugnant worst, perfectly content to destroy a man's reputation through dishonest attacks if it will further its agenda. Josef Stalin would be proud of this movement.

Rush has beaten them all back now. In fact, as with the Petraeus/"Betray Us" attacks by MoveOn, this newest round of attempted character assassination backfired, and did nothing but re-energize conservatives. But this won't stop the left. Tomorrow it will be Sean Hannity, or Mark Levin, or maybe Laura Ingraham. This group plays for keeps.

And what of all those media outlets giving aid and comfort to the leftists who attacked Rush? Now that we know there are several dozen cases of "phony soldier" scandals, just as Rush suggested, how many stories have they devoted to them, thus vindicating Rush? Check for a Jesse Macbeth story in a Nexis database search on CBS, NBC, and NPR. Search Time, Newsweek and USA Today. Look up the Washington Post, the New York Times and USA Today.

You won’t find a one.

There really is a huge

There really is a huge story here. Thanks for clearly illustrating it.

Reid says Rush losing listeners

This is what Reid said on the Senate floor: "During his show last Wednesday, Rush Limbaugh was engaged in one of his typical rants. This rant was unremarkable and indistinguishable from his usual drivel, which has been steadily losing listeners for years – until he crossed that line by calling our men and women in uniform who oppose the war in Iraq ‘phony soldiers.’"

Rush is losing listeners -- steadily for years?

Really? I don't think so. And certainly not as fast as Congress has been losing popularity, thanks to Reid and company.

TnT....I laughed at that too

TnT....I laughed at that too when I saw it last week. I said "In your dreams, Harry." LOL

The left won.

The left got what it wanted: a few words thrown about in the media here and there that made Rush look bad. Doesn't matter if the words were true or false. Now the left can refer to them as if they were true.

A mind-numbed public, unable to think critically, accepts it.

Rush Was Right

The sad thing about all of this, no one will ever know, except us that pay attention.  This country is too fickle and comatose to comprehend what is going on here.  Worse yet, they don't care.  You have senators that can stand in the well of the Senate and brazenly annunciate character assassinations and outright lie; you have the MSM that will turn it's back on any story that doesn't fit their flavor of the month; you have cable TV that is filled with pundits that are beyond constructive conversation, who focus more on ratings; you have utterly assinine polls that are biased and misleading, yet are herald as the 'pulse of the voters'; and lastly, you have a mind numbing public whose attentiveness is limited to reading misleading and biased headlines and sound bytes.  This attack on Rush, et. al. is only the beginning, and it's going to get nastier.  Conservatives had better get their head out of the sand and begin to solidify their support for the GOP nominee.  If not, we're in for a torturous eight years.

The MSM has become the phony

The MSM has become the phony media.

The problem is, how many

The problem is, how many out there who tune in daily to the scum in the MSM actually take the time to listen, do some research, and verify (as we do here and elsewhere) that most of what the MSM doles out is manufactured, agenda-driven, rot gut, leftist propaganda?

At my office I hear the misinformed all the time, and I try to set it right.  I get weird looks and asked from where I get my information.

Too many of the masses believe what someone like this Jesse MacBeth says over people like Rush Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Ingraham, or even people who have been in the Middle East and saw things first hand.

The MSM has always been

The MSM has always been phony.  It's all about the cash.

The sad part is how long it took you to notice.

hey leon were the

hey leon were the soldiers phony or not?

thought so...

so why the lying? really - what is it with you people?

"The MSM has always been

"The MSM has always been phony. ... The sad part is how long it took you to notice." Leon, there are those of us who have noticed and complained about the MSM since at least the late 1960s. For years there have been articles and polls showing either the majority or a sizable minority of those polled believed the newsmedia were left biased. What took us so long? How long have you been noticing how the media lie? It's not that it took us so long to notice, but that only recently (the last 20 years or so) that there has been a conduit of information where we could get this information out to more people to demonstrate the phoniness of the "news" media.

Take It Away, Leon, Take It Away!

Actually, Leon does have a point, as the phony media got Bill Clinton elected President in 1992 and is about to do the same thing to his wife.

I think some homework

I think some homework wasn't done looking into Udall's proposed bill (HR Con Res 221). The bill was sent to the House Armed Services Committee on 10/1, where I am sure it will be buried and never heard from again.

There are currently 26 co-sponsors to the bill, all Democrat(ic)s, including the non-voting chick from the Virgin Islands.

Come on, Newsbusters, don't let a simple shrubber like me do better detective work than the experts!

P.S. Thank Allah that our politicians are tackling these kid of tough issues! It's those high-priority issues like comdemning Limbaugh and celebrating Ramadan that makes Congress such an efficient machine.

It's all part of the plan.

This article sums it up pretty well, I think:

More Phonies?

"Macbeth is now in prison serving a five-month term for falsifying Army records and applying falsely for veterans' benefits. Limbaugh was right." -- the DEMOCRAT Mayor of Atlantic City is said to have claimed status as a former Green Beret in order to increase his benefits (like Britney/Lindsey et al he's now checked himself into some kind of rehab)...Al Hubbard who along with DEMOCRAT John Kerry went around the world as Vietnam Veterans against the War claiming American soldiers were killing, raping and pillaging at will in Vietnam -- Al Hubbard never served in Nam or in the armed forces of this country...then there is DEMOCRAT Tom Harkins of Iowa who phonied up his service records too -- why did you do that tommy-boy? Trying to be one of the guys or get more benefits? there are plenty of examples for the MSM to use -- it's too lazy to do any research that doesn't fit its agenda--SAD.

Media Matters evidently

Media Matters evidently dosent employ the sharpest knives in the drawer, more like Clintons. Cant have anyone smarter than the smartest woman in the world working for them. It was a fools errand, attacking Rush and Bill O. Either one of them has more listeners than MM has democrats, that know who they, (media matters), are. Rush reaches more people in an hour than Media Matter reaches in a week, or more. Most everyone that has ever listened to Rush knew it was a put up job, a lie, when they heard what the MSM was saying. If this is the best they can do, they should just fold up shop and head for the island where all their belivers live. They are simply not an effective unit. And after the Petraus ad and the Rush bit, everytime they open their mouths, it will be viewed as a case of "wolf! wolf!". IMHO that is.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Mr. Bozell made one,

Mr. Bozell made one, possibly two, errors in the body of his article. "He was never in the military, period. He was tossed out of boot camp after four months."

Actually, he was tossed out of boot camp after forty-four days, not four months.

Being in boot camp means he was in the military. However, he was so incompetent and inept that he was tossed out for the good of the service.

The rest of the article was spot on, though. Rush was talking, not about combat veterans who oppose the war. He was talking about people like McBeth who haven't served, or Beauchamp who are currently serving, but who have slandered their fellow soldiers to advance an agenda. In my own personal definition, while Beauchamp is serving in the military, he is no soldier. He lacks the discipline and honor that defines a soldier. So, Beauchamp can be safely classified as a "phony soldier".

"A communist is someone who reads Marx. An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx." Ronald Reagan

technically i don't think

technically i don't think boot camp qualifies as military service - you have not been sworn in yet?

service of the new NB respect police

You may be right, I don't

You may be right, I don't know. But, while in boot camp, you are under military control, subject to military discipline, and orders from military personnel. That might also describe an area under martial law, and that wouldn't mean being in the military. But, in addition, in boot camp you are required to wear military clothing, i.e. BDUs or other uniforms as required. To me, that means you are "in" the military. It is true that under the present set of rules in the volunteer military, that before you finish boot camp, you can easily quit with few consequences (discharge other than honorable or for the good of the service), whereas after you finish boot and you are sworn in it becomes more complicated.

Basic Training

He was in the military. When you sign on the dotted line that means your in.He washed out for whatever reason in Basic Training. You are sworn in after signing enlistment contract.Unless it has changed. It has been over 30 years since I signed up.So somethings have changed over the years most likely.

I'm thinking Brent means he

I'm thinking Brent means he was never sworn in - Brent obviously doesn't think BMT counts as being in the military - i don't think one can't say he's completely wrong about that

A service of the new NB respect police

Well

He would of been sworn in before heading to Basic.Still since he didnt complete Basic he isnt a soldier.Unless he was disabled in some way he wouldnt have any benefits.

Swearing in takes place at

Swearing in takes place at the MEPS station on the way to Basic.

All it means is that the soldier in question did not meet acceptable standards for whatever reason and was removed from further service.

In recent years the Army has taken to follow in the footsteps of the Marine corps in that the Army will not allow soldiers in Bootcamp to wear a unit crest on their berets much like the Marine Corps will not allow a member in bootcamp to wear the "Eagle Globe and Anchor" until graduation.  By doing this they try to make it a meaningful event that seperates those who graduate from those who do not.
