Rutgers University is known as the birthplace of college football, but in the last few weeks it’s seemed more like the deathplace of sportsmanship. On September 7, Rutgers hosted Navy’s football team. What respect was shown in the wake of the Midshipmen’s forthcoming service to the country and the approaching September 11 anniversary? The rowdy student fans of Rutgers hurled obscenities at Navy, thoroughly embarrassing their college and their town.
Rutgers won the game, but lost any sense of honor and decency. Navy was booed and peppered with "You suck!" chants when they stepped on the field to start both halves. When Navy kick returner Reggie Campbell came up limping after a tackle, students chanted, "You got f--ed up! You got f--ed up! You got f-ed-up!" Toward the end of the second half, Rutgers students in began to serenade an adjacent section of Navy fans and uniformed Midshipmen: "‘F-- you, Navy! F--you, Navy! F-- you, Navy!’"
Bill Squires, a New Jersey recruiter for Annapolis and a 1975 graduate of the Naval Academy, was appalled by the students, but proud of the Navy midshipmen because they had no reaction. "They took it. They stood tall. They did what they were taught to do. I am not sure, if I was 30 years younger in my white uniform, I wouldn’t have reacted differently."
On September 11, Rutgers President Richard McCormick apologized to Naval Academy officials in a letter. "No student-athlete should ever be subject to profane language directed at them from the crowd," he wrote, "and certainly not the young men of the Naval Academy who have made a commitment to serve our nation in a time of war." That should be obvious to anyone, even college students with a surplus of alcohol in their systems.
It’s ironic that the national media would grow outraged when the girls’ basketball team at Rutgers was the target of a fleeting, unfunny "nappy-headed hos" line from Don Imus earlier this year, but when Rutgers students demonstrated a more prolonged and more profane disrespect of one of our nation’s service academies, there was virtually no media outrage. It was largely swept under the rug.
The only defense of Rutgers – and this really is no defense at all – is that their vile behavior was certainly not unprecedented. A few years ago, the University of Maryland’s basketball fans caused trouble for ESPN by chanting "F-you" at Duke guard J.J. Redick. As Mark DiIonno, who broke the story of the Rutgers student misbehavior in the New Jersey Star-Ledger, lamented, "Booing, cursing, chanting obscenities, unfortunately, are now part of the game day experience. It's easily been three decades since fans across the country in all sports began spending more time and creative energy jeering the visitors and officials than cheering the home team."
DiIonno said that the Rutgers fans weren’t even the worst in New Jersey, saving that place of dishonor for pro football fans of the New York Jets. In the first game of the season, starting Jets quarterback Chad Pennington injured his ankle in the third quarter and limped over to the sideline. The Jets fans cheered his injury. Former New York Giants quarterback (and NFL broadcaster) Phil Simms said this kind of negativity "would probably happen in 30 of the 32 stadiums across the NFL. There are a lot of factors as to why it's that way, including the way the fans have changed when they go to games, and just the position of the quarterback." He added: "If the head coach got injured and relieved during the game, almost every fan base would cheer that action, too."
The sports arena is no longer a place where you can comfortably take young sons and daughters for entertainment, unless you have grade schoolers who are used to profane taunting.
The climate’s gotten so poisonous it’s almost comical. The University of Oregon has to suspend its mascot for brutalizing the mascot of the University of Houston at a recent contest. He couldn’t tolerate the Houston side doing push-ups for each point it scored, feeling that it was a sign of disrespect. So YouTube watchers are going wild over footage of this large white duck mascot kicking the other mascot on the sideline.
Some find it funny. It would be funny, if it was an act, like old-fashioned San Diego Chicken high jinks. But it wasn’t. The brawling mascots had to be separated by security personnel.

Sportsmanship still exists.
September 23, 2007 - 15:52 ET by balboaSportsmanship still exists. Just don't expect to see it at a college football game at Rutgers, for one. And don't expect the media to get in a tizzy over heckling at sports events because it's not exactly news.
Heckling can be funny, and it can be obscene. It's unfortunate that some simpletons can't enjoy a game without hearing "You suck!" but that's life.
And this isn't exactly news Bozell's giving us. Drinking at NFL and MLB games has been a problem for YEARS. Some stadiums, if not most, have their own jails. Philly is particularly problematic, along with Cleveland.
I'm anxiously awaiting Bozell's next column titled "I remember when all this used to be farmland," followed by "Have you heard this Rock and Roll music?"
Great stuff, Brent. All
September 23, 2007 - 15:58 ET by wiwfGreat stuff, Brent. All completely true. CSU (yes, the one you've been reading about) is horrible with sportsmanship. With common chants of "F--- 'em up, F--- 'em up, CSU!" "F-- Wyoming" (or opponent name). Middle finger salutes are all too common for bad calls and opposing scores. "Bullshit" is a favorite chant as well, as well as "Dirty Hippies" (CU) and "Dirty Mormons" (BYU), the latter two I approve of. ;)
It's disappointing, but sometimes you join in anyway.

balboa got it wrong again, and whined his usual whine
September 23, 2007 - 18:36 ET by SportPoliticsI'm not surprised to see balboa declare that the massive liberal bias exposed by the two very different ways the heckling was treated in the two cases pointed out "isn't news". Of course, the problem is as stated, the latter wasn't news. Don't expect a liberal simpleton like balboa to understand that. To him, "this isn't news and doesn't belong here", as usual, his moronic take is nearly unbelievable in its depth of ignorance, and he's more than dumbfounded and proud when sharing it.
Furthermore, the problem is the "simpletons" screaming the foul insults, not the people who "can't enjoy the game" supposedly because of it. balboa(sic) can't comprehend that, since he supports the public chant cursing.
I quite understand balboa fully supported the public cursing, and said anyone not liking it is a simpleton. He may deny it, but his words are there anyway. That's what you get with the MTV crowd, a celebration of how low they can go, with a rude remark as a follow up to anyone who doesn't like it, as long as it meets their politcal agenda.
I'm sure he would feel the same about his own comments here or anyone else's, as in let the cursing fly, if his stance had any validity whatsoever. Of course it does not, but for the type like balboa, none of that matters. Their minds don't work like a normal persons, and they support the rebel foul yapper on their side of the political spectrum, in this case, with the excuse of alcohol, and "it's funny" sometimes, yet as pointed out never allowed Imus the same two excuses.
It is quite amazing, the disconnect in their brains, and their vocal defense of their own twisted stupidity. I'm sure they are self-satisfied, still think they are correct, and always will. There is no breaching the treachery of their idiocy. "It's not the same thing" they will shriek, as their mind twirls about in their own denial and blind self defense.
I'd really like to be a "liberal" and claim like they do I love everyone and am always for helping others and support the downtrodden and the trampled races and the unluckily disadvantaged by birth or skin color or genetics, but when they have almost everyone in their camp displaying the massive stupidty that balboa just displayed, there isn't a chance I'll side with them. It's far too embarrassing seeing how their lies are so easily tossed out as "excuses" - and how they smugly pretend someone should believe it.
We know why the lowest cursings were allowed to be hurled at the Navy players, and why the gumpy local lying fool liberal endorsed it 100%. Same reason the news ignored it in this case, and went after Imus with full vigor - in a massively liberal biased and twisted mindset.
In the end, it is clear the left will abuse their free speech wildly, then demand noone else but they are allowed to in the fashion and form they prescribe, then claim, after crucifying someone they didn't want to hear, that they did nothing wrong with their own outrageous behavior. That's funny to them. That is them winning, to them. That's their lying game, and they're sticking to it.
I wonder how much they will enjoy the eventual consequences, and what those will be.

September 23, 2007 - 16:16 ET by ncstevemI think what Mr. Bozell is trying to illustrate is that the knuckleheads at Rutgers are engaging in obscene behavior against those who may very well be putting their life in harms way in the near future. Rather than be appreciative toward the midshipmen and acting accordingly, they act like the hedonistic dopes that they are.
On a further note, I wasn't able to respond to your reply to me when I corrected Noel Sheppard about the proper use of English (i.e. calling a 'swamp' a 'wetland').
You replied to the effect that it's not 'anal' but 'annoying'. I completely agree with you that it's annoying. As a matter of fact it's beyond annoying when the feminists (amongst others) change the language and girly men go right along with it so they don't offend anyone. Real men aren't concerned with offending anyone by using proper English.

What balboa really can't stand is someone trying to point out it's bad, like Mr. Bozell who doesn't like cussingly foul rock music either, when what Imus did was unforgiveable, since it opresses team players at Rutgers when they eventually hear about it, from people like balboa calling them and telling them someone said like Imus said it, instead of a large crowd of crazed fans chanting it in their faces in person.
It's all good, since the crowd cursing in their faces was really scared of the tough Navy players, but Imus was about to take the girls basketball players on in person, if they had only had the radio on and heard the 3 words he said, once.
If you're our modern stupid liberals, we're certain you'll open your mouth endlessly and prove it.

Drinking at NFL and MLB Games
September 23, 2007 - 17:17 ET by Del Dolemontebalboa's right, drinking problems have existed for many years at pro football and baseball games. But aren't the majority of college students too young to legally drink?
Here in New England, the Patriots changed things a few years back after the Krafts bought the team. Any stadium patron who's caught intoxicated gets thrown out immediately, and if they are season-ticket holders they lose their season tickets.
In addition, the Krafts installed a new high tech stadium security system with cameras that can focus in on ANY seat in the stadium. This was originally intended for security for World Cup Soccer, as several World Cup matches were held at the stadium, but has been kept in place for the Patriots games.
Del Dolemonte
September 23, 2007 - 21:48 ET by SportPoliticsThe actions of fans and players has been getting increasingly out of hand over the course of a number of years, and the news has been reporting it. We have stories now of parents brawling on the field, and even attacking their children's opposition players. We have plenty of news of the parents planning a large monetary sports career for their child, as well as the get out of the ghetto ticket crowd, and the high stakes and dollars involved have racheted up the tensions and actions. When players have dirty backrounds, and play those in front of the fans, the crowd responds accordingly.
Pointing out that vulgarities and their use is being pushed from the left more and more is a no brainer. Now we see it here excused as "going on for a long time", nothing new. We are also aware of the riots in the streets celebrating a winning team.
In the rest of the world it is taken even more seriously, or the reactions of the fans are much more expected, we are told, by the news. Perhaps some here feel we need to catch up with that, in the USA, and it appears we are.
From steriods to dog fighting, to doping, to prostitution, to women in locker rooms to shamed sportscasters, to the fans and their "acceptable" reactions or planned misbehaviors, to mascots fighting, it must be "excused" we are told. From Janet's rip away bra cup, to the coarse commentary from 2 or 3 "announcers" schooled in pop culture and paid to share it during the game...
I guess that would be fine, except that we all know, and the news reports, it is getting worse. What I call the 60's generation has infected the entire scene, and their answer is always "we have the right to", it's for ratings, if you don't like it - change the channel, you can't control what the crowd wants, loosen up you old fuddy duddy.
Fine if "that's the way it is", but then don't tell me Imus is a criminal and needs to go, then the very same school can do much worse to a team that is their guest, and - well, it's just the way fans act... including plenty of the same students crying, wailing, and making demands concerning Imus, or not making any effort to stop the abuse.
They can get away with it, and they obviously have. Their smug self satisfaction is no doubt enormous, and any excuse in the book will be given, as you saw balboa make the attempt. Not that it's any different than excuses given for Imus. He had been doing it for decades as well.
The funny thing is, Imus was at the Rutgers ladies basketball game, in person, and probably heard far, far worse than what he said over the air. How are we possibly to believe that he didn't after all the "know it alls" here telling us it's a rampant problem and has been "the same" for a long drunken time.
So, it's ok if you teach Imus exactly how to behave at a game, in person, which is essentially in plenty of cases, "not at all" - and if he repeats it on air or makes up his own 3 word slam the next day - he's toast.... but the same people that cried out against him, can endorse their own misbehavior, over and over again, at their political opposition team in fact, and that's ok, at the same school, no need for the fair news media to even comment, nor any leftist to understand any similarity.
I don't get it, what's so hard to see about it, or understand. The left obviously rules with severe predjudice. I for one am happy that Mr. Bozell has the common sense and the guts to stand up against it, and point out the massive double-standard.
Even our resident braindead alien liberal cracked up and "admitted" he doesn't like it (in between liking it and saying it can be funny -etc - heck he even gibbed up telling us it can be obscene - letting us know he wasn't going to lie about that part), and then much later claimed he is personally involved in talking to the vulgar fans who do such things, in an attempt to stop them. Not that I believe him for an instant in the latter case, because I certainly don't, nor that it matters anyway, since "this isn't news", and "there is nothing here".
balboa [ I'm not excusing it, just saying it's a fact. I don't like it, either. All I can do is make sure if I have kids, they don't do it.]
That was, of course, before he told us he is personally involved in confronting vulgar fans for his collegiate position and his college event team goes after 'em. " It's all he can do ", the new balboa, that is. Just remember though, he can hardly wait for the next non-issue from Mr. Bozell.

September 23, 2007 - 17:18 ET by Jerry"It's unfortunate that some simpletons can't enjoy a game without hearing "You suck!" but that's life..."
Foul language and bad behavior have become a "That's life" situation partly because of attitudes like the one you are demonstrating. Excusing bad behavior simply leads to more bad behavior, without fail.
Hollywood puts foul language in every movie because they claim "they are only reflecting society". I say hogwash. They have reflected a minute segment of society and magnified it until it has become mainstream. You can't go anywhere anymore without hearing people say "f--- you!' or "motherf---ing" this or other such garbage, and I for one am sick of it. It is NOT life, it is NOT acceptable behavior, it is NOT what I want my kids to be saying, it is NOT what I want my kids to be hearing.

September 23, 2007 - 18:27 ET by JerryI'm not harping on you Bal. I know you have good values. Bad judgement.. but good values :)

Let's take it back people.

September 23, 2007 - 17:43 ET by rx4musicHeckling is one thing... Obscenities are another. Ever had a drunken fan get in the face of your 10 year-old and tell him, "Your team is a bunch of f#cking losers"? Ever seen a mob of opposing fans nearly stomp a guy to death? I have... Ever had multiple beers thrown on you because the hat you wore was from a different team? I saw that done to a 13 year-old kid in NY at a Yankees game. September 23, 2007 - 17:46 ET by balboaSorry, that should have read "some simpletons can't enjoy a game without SAYING", not "hearing."
balboa the ignorant and blind opposer
September 23, 2007 - 18:52 ET by SportPoliticsAnother lesson for a deadhead dingbell:
Good radio still exists. Just don't expect to hear it about a college basketball game at Rutgers, for one. And don't expect the media to get in a tizzy over radio heckling at girls basketball sports events because it's not exactly news.
Heckling can be funny, and it can be obscene. It's unfortunate that some simpletons can't enjoy a game without hearing "You suck!" but that's life.
And this isn't exactly news Bozell's giving us. After effects of drug use by NBC and MSNBC jocks has been a problem for YEARS. Some stations, if not most, have their own 5 second delays. Imus was particularly problematic, along with Rush.
I'm anxiously awaiting ThoughtPolice's next column titled "I remember when all this used to be Kent State," followed by "Have you heard this Church and Choir music?"
never mind... it isn't worth
September 23, 2007 - 19:54 ET by rx4musicnever mind... it isn't worth repeating what I was gonna say...

September 23, 2007 - 16:00 ET by general companyNo wonder why they were irrelevant for so many years,,,I am betting they have many more years of irrelevancy ahead as well. If I start seeing this nonsense when I go to games, I will quite going, do you HEAR me Owners, AD's and Deans???
Even though this didn't
September 23, 2007 - 16:34 ET by bretzysdudeEven though this didn't happen at a sporting event, I'm ashamed as a Sooner alum that this happened.
This country's elite have
September 23, 2007 - 16:35 ET by RackieThis country's elite have always put their best foot forward to place it squarely up someone else's ass, regardless. Their sense of entitlement dictates this behavior. They cannot escape their upbringing. Boorishness is bred into them. Their parents would be proud and surprised if they behaved otherwise.
Is it me, or has this school
September 23, 2007 - 16:45 ET by fitzfongIs it me, or has this school gotten a lot of undeserved positive mileage out of the phony "nappy-headed hos" controversy? If this is what passes for school spirit at Rutgers, "ho" is the least offensive adjective to describe this riff-raff. Bunch of self-righteous frauds.
<sarc> Well, you know,
September 23, 2007 - 16:50 ET by motherbelt<sarc>
Well, you know, fitz, some groups are OK to taunt and call names, not to mention ridicule when injured.
Black women are not in that group; members of the military are.
And I have very little doubt that the animus was dircted at them because they were Navy, not because they were the opposing team.
I agree. It is New Jersey,
September 23, 2007 - 23:13 ET by fitzfongI agree. It is New Jersey, after all. Home of Menendez, Lautenberg, Corzine, the sleazy 11 and Jim McGreevey.

George Washington's letter against profanity
September 23, 2007 - 16:51 ET by Daniel Baker“The General is sorry to be informed that the foolish and wicked
practice of profane cursing and swearing, a vice heretofore little
known in our American army, is growing into fashion. He hopes the
officers will, by example as well as influence, endeavor to check it
and that both they and the men will reflect that we can have little
hope of the blessing of heaven on our arms if we insult it by our
impropriety and folly. Added to this, it is a vice so mean and low,
without any temptation, that every man of sense and character detests
and despises it.”
The current abudance of profanity exposes the decay in our society.
Washington's eloquent persuasion
September 23, 2007 - 17:27 ET by sarcasmoProbably worked a lot better back-then than bigger & ever-bigger government has against society's coarsening today.

I Guess It's Safe To Say
September 23, 2007 - 16:52 ET by BourbeauThat Jesse Jackson, Al Sharton, Governor Corzine, nor the elected Congressional representatives from NJ had any comments on the Rutger's students' egregious profanity against the midshipmen and women of the Naval Academy. There wasn't one of them that couldn't make time for comments regarding Don Imus; but when it comes to standing up for our service men and women, they're AWOL. I hope the people of NJ are proud of their State University; and I also want to thank the MSM for their excellent coverage of this despicable behavior.
AWOL
September 23, 2007 - 17:54 ET by jmad627bourbeau, the "gentlemen" you refered to sharpton/jackson are also awol, when a policeman/policewoman is killed in the line of duty regardless of their color
Maryland Lack of Sportmanship
September 23, 2007 - 17:02 ET by kdoliverMy wife is an UMD alumni and an avid supporter of their mens basketball program. I am typically disgusted by the antics at any basketball game and generally refuse not watch any basketball. However, I went to one game two years and I was absolutely disgusted at lack of sportmanship displayed there. She saw absolutely nothing wrong with it. This is the same woman who doesn't like competition with kids (no winners or losers) because it may hurt their fragile egos.
I learned a lot of life-lessons on the playing field. These lessons of digging deep, learning to win and lose positively, how competition makes you better have served me well through army training, two combat tours and into the corporate world.
The type actions in this article are (have?) destroying the benefits of competition and sportsmanship.

and what?
September 23, 2007 - 17:16 ET by Lame CherryMr. Bozell this is not the children as children always act like heathens no matter the Lord of the Flies generation. This is about liberal snot parents rich to the gills buying money grubbing colleges and money grubbing college sports events who think they have bought their Pacman Jones way to do anything in life they will.
It is very simple in how to handle this and that is to expell all the students at the games for a year without refund and WITHOUT ability to transfer to another college later or their credits.
These liberal institutions can raise unholy hell over North Dakota having an Indian name so they sure can hammer these students and their rich parents with no recourse. Let them sit out a year of their lives so Mummy and Daddy can babysit their butts and not be allowed to get them into another college. That will end it as even liberal moron non parents will have to start being parents of these thugs.
The answer is not the children. It is the Dean taking control and letting parents suffer the 35,000 to 60,000 fine of baby getting no education other than criminal education as the DOJ has every responsibilty to indict in these cases.

Being from NJ and living 2
September 23, 2007 - 17:33 ET by jmad627Being from NJ and living 2 miles from Rutgers Stadium, I am both ashamed and appalled by the behaviour of those "fans." My father, not an alum of the USNA, served proudly for 30 years in the U.S. naval submarine force, and to say I'm embarassed by these students' actions is an understatement.
So in answer to an earlier post, we, especially me, are NOT proud of what ensued at last weeks Rutgers/Navy game. My hope is that the exposure of this story will shame these students in to behaving more respectful in the future.
Oxymoron
September 23, 2007 - 17:38 ET by UnsaneSomeone needs to explain to Rutgers' president that "student-athlete" is perhaps the biggest oxymoron known to man. Call them students, call them athletes, but never both.
Unless you want to call them "athlete-students", which would be far more accurate.
(In fairness, he was talking about the midshipmen of the Naval Academy, but nonetheless, there are few terms that are as grating as "student-athlete".)

September 23, 2007 - 17:47 ET by balboaYou don't think student-athletes exist?
No
September 23, 2007 - 18:03 ET by UnsaneNo. This is ESPECIALLY true in the case of schools with big-name football/baseball/basketball programs.
Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.
Sorry, Un. Remove the big
September 23, 2007 - 18:58 ET by Roger the ShrubberSorry, Un. Remove the big revenue generators like football and basketball, you are left with true scholar athletes sports, like soccer, swimming, volleyball, wrestling, etc, etc, etc, etc... Those kids know damn well they have the unique opportunity to use their physical skills to help pay for a college education.
Please don't lump in those "minor sports" folks with the Dexter Manley's of the world!
Exactly. Sure, the big
September 23, 2007 - 19:03 ET by balboaExactly. Sure, the big money sports have a lot of idiots, jerks, criminals, but the majority, like the commercials say, will be "going pro" in something other than athletics.
