CBS’s Schieffer Derides Boehner for Tying Debt Ceiling Hike to Spending Cuts: ‘Was He Kidding?’

By Brent Baker | May 20, 2012 | 17:23

The Sunday interview show hosts all reacted with disbelief toward House Speaker John Boehner’s pledge to demand spending cuts equal to the debt ceiling increase, with CBS’s Bob Schieffer the most derisive as he declared “it was a week when you couldn’t believe your ears” because, when Boehner said the same thing last year, “Congress tied itself in such a knot that America’s credit rating was downgraded, not to mention Congress’ approval rating which hit a new low. And now he wants to fight the same battle? Was he kidding?”

Schieffer rued: “Does this mean we’re headed towards another of those nasty ‘stop everything’ political standoffs in an election year?”

Over on NBC’s Meet the Press, David Gregory teased: “The debt crisis back here at home. Will we see a re-play of last summer’s debt ceiling debacle?” Boehner “laid down the gauntlet,” ABC’s George Stephanopoulos warned before scolding the Republican Speaker: “A lot of people say that what makes us like Greece is putting the question of whether or not we’re going to pay our bills, making that a political question. That’s what The Economist said.”

George Will, during the This Week roundtable, disabused the media narrative of a “debacle” last year:

GEORGE WILL: In discussing this, the word “debacle” is mandatory because everyone says we don’t want to go through ‘the debacle’ we had last August with the increase of the debt ceiling. To which I say: What debacle? Of course, it was untidy. That’s what democracy looks like.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: America’s credit rating was downgraded.

WILL: And what happened? Liquidity from all over the world flooded in to our downgraded treasuries. It made no difference whatever. And we sailed right on. What the President wanted at that time was what he called a clean extension of the debt ceiling increase, which meant no restraint on spending, no super-committee. Nothing.

Schieffer’s loaded and derogatory show opening about Boehner was part of a larger opening package which ridiculed Mitt Ronmey and showcased a slap at Romney from Vice President Joe Biden:

Audio: MP3 clip

From the top of the Sunday, May 20 Face the Nation on CBS:

BOB SCHIEFFER: Today on Face the Nation, it was a week when you couldn’t believe your ears. First it was House Speaker John Boehner.

SPEAKER BOEHNER: I will again insist on my simple principle of cuts and reforms greater than the debt limit increase.

SCHIEFFER: When he said that last year, Congress tied itself in such a knot that America’s credit rating was downgraded, not to mention Congress’ approval rating which hit a new low. And now he wants to fight the same battle? Was he kidding?

PRESIDENT OBAMA (Holding a hoagie): This is no joke right here.

SCHIEFFER: The President and congressional leaders huddled over hoagies but had no answers, so we’ll ask three key Senators: Republican leader Mitch McConnell, Virginia’s Mark Warner, and South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham. Does this mean we’re headed towards another of those nasty “stop everything” political standoffs in an election year?

And did you hear what Mitt Romney said about the comeback of the auto industry? Vice President Biden sure did.

VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: I’m going to quote him, he said, quote, “I’ll take a lot of credit for the fact that the industry’s come back.” Oh? And by the way, I’ll take a lot of credit for a man having landed on the moon (laughter ) because although I was in school, I rooted for it.

SCHIEFFER: On another subject, Romney admitted he doesn’t always remember his exact words, but he said, you can still take them to the bank.

MITT ROMNEY: I’m not familiar precisely exactly what I said but I stand by what I said, whatever it was.

.....

Schieffer’s first question of the program, to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell:

Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate is with us this morning from Louisville. Welcome, Senator. I want to start out with this statement by Speaker Boehner because last summer, when Congress got itself all tangled up over extending the debt ceiling and the country was headed toward default, financial securities got their ratings downgraded, you were one of the key players, as it were, who helped structure a compromise that kept all that from happening. Were you surprised when Speaker Boehner said now he’s ready to repeat that same fight and go through this whole thing again?

Election year standoff?

Submitted by Model850 on Sun, 05/20/2012 - 6:17pm.

Schieffer rued: “Does this mean we’re headed towards another of those nasty ‘stop everything’ political standoffs in an election year?”

If I'm not mistaken the debt ceiling discussions won't even occur until after the election. If I'm right, what's all the handwringing about? This supports the notion that it likely won't be a pre-election issue:

New Debt Ceiling Debate Recalculated to January 30th

Happily, the newest calculations show, worst case, that we can last until January 30th, 2013 before the federal government actually defaults on its debt.

This time, I based the calculation on this year’s national debt growth rate ($3.66B/day). I also made a 2nd calculation based on last month’s national debt growth rate ($3.55B/day).

Based on those two calculations we will now reach the debt ceiling again between November 15th and November 21st… that’s AFTER the 2012 elections. The politicians can breath a collective sigh of relief!

With the 77 day cushion of “extraordinary measures” that the U.S. Treasury always resorts to (stealing from every protected cookie jar it has left) that will take us to around January 30th before the federal government will actually default.

Quick question

Submitted by octavioj on Sun, 05/20/2012 - 6:26pm.

Let us assume the credit downgrade was indeed a result of the debt ceiling "squabble". Will our credit rating still be intact when the deficit of this ONE country is equivalent to about 2% of the ENTIRE PLANET's GDP? How rational and responsible of the credit agencies would that be? Do these people ever think about it? The credit downgrade was less about the "squabble" and more about the resulting deal, that did NOT deal with the problems at all...

Exactly. Or what if he

Submitted by SSix2 on Sun, 05/20/2012 - 7:10pm.

Exactly. Or what if he President got what he wanted and a clean debt ceiling hike, would our credit rating be downgraded? What joke. The media would have us believe our in negoitations caused the downgrade not our uncontrollable urge to spend other peoples money.

Did you hear the one about Romney's dog?

Submitted by MidAmerica on Sun, 05/20/2012 - 6:36pm.

The last thing the dems and their supporters want is a national focus on the economy near the election.

Maybe media will do what they usually do when they really don't like a news story, just ignore it as if it didn't happen.

They all MISSED the point!

Submitted by Fredy on Sun, 05/20/2012 - 7:01pm.

What Boehner is trying to do is to tie two UNCONNECTED items together to force Republicans that want to cut spending into voting for MORE spending! Boehner is looking at a continuing resolution for 2013. The budget period starts in September. The debt ceiling increase is not needed until NEXT January.

Boehner wants the media to blend these votes together to scare Republicans into a 'we are causing a default' situation by not rubber stamping the insane spending yet again. Of course, this media is perfectly happy making this LIE into the truth.

The truth is that Boehner is about to find himself voting with Democrats, and a handfull of Republican spenders, on this next continuing resolution. Boehner has sold the Republican freshmen, who were elected to cut spending, down the road for the last 18 months! He cannot rely on them to vote for yet another ABSURD spending bill.

Now Boehner is looking at a situation where the Democrats are going to demand even MORE spending for their votes. This will END Boehner's term as speaker. Either the Democrats will win in Nov and Boehner is out, or the Republicans will win in 2012, running AGAINST Boehner's spending, and he will still be out!

John RINO Bonehead has been a flaming disaster as Speaker

Submitted by Dave. on Sun, 05/20/2012 - 11:47pm.

He might as well cross over the proverbial aisle and join the communist dems, as he has done nothing but help the Kenyan-born, illegitimate fraud of a Muslim communist  POTUS to further his goal of totally destroying our once-great republic.

The very survival of this nation as founded depends, in part, on his removal as Speaker of the House next January (if it isn't already too late by then - and it may be already) - along with a few other things.

Who's kidding who?

Submitted by CobraMan on Mon, 05/21/2012 - 1:45pm.

Bob, are you kidding? It wasn't the debt ceiling DEBATE that lead to the credit ratings downgrade, and the "panic," it was the very real raising of the debt limit WITHOUT ACCOMPANYING CUTS which lead to the downgrade and the "panic!" The S&P specifically mention that when they downgraded the rating.

Congress punted on the debate, by agreeing to an increase (decided by a select few, of course) while putting off any possible cuts until the next fiscal year. They did that specifically to cause those "automatic" cuts to become a campaign issue, in my humble opinion. And now it has become a campaign issue, and you're doing you best to make sure it is, so who's kidding who?
