Clueless Bob Schieffer Befuddled by Idea Team Obama Wants Higher Gas Prices: ‘What’s That About?’

By Brent Baker | March 18, 2012 | 16:33

Another example of how out of touch the Washington press corps is with what is common knowledge amongst conservatives. On Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer was flummoxed by Mitt Romney’s contention that Obama officials desire high gas prices:

Mitt Romney said...that the President actually wanted gas prices to go up when he was running for President. He also said the President should fire his three top energy people because they were trying to get the price up. What’s that about?

Guest David Axelrod of the Obama campaign assured Schieffer: “Well, I think it’s about nonsense is what it's about.” Minutes later, when RNC Chairman Reince Priebus pointed out “the President’s own energy czar said -- and this is undisputed -- that he wanted gas prices to go to European levels,” a clueless Schieffer talked over Priebus, demanding: “When did he say that?”

Of course, though CBS News didn’t bother to report it, during a House hearing on Tuesday, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu “walked back,” as Politico put it, his 2008 statement: “Somehow, we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.”

Back in 2007, Barack Obama predicted “a lot of us are going to have to pay more per unit for electricity” to cover the higher cost of “green” energy production.

Audio: MP3 clip which matches three-part video mash up above

Schieffer did at least ask Axelrod: “Was it a mistake now in retrospect to stop that Keystone pipeline project? They were going to bring a pipeline to bring the oil down to the Gulf coast from Canada. That would put a lot of people to work amongst other things. Do you have regrets about not moving along with that?”

That very decision is evidence of why conservatives consider Obama himself, Chu, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson all hostile to fossil fuels as all have enacted impediments to domestic drilling and production – all of which, over the long term, raises the price of energy.

When Schiefer pressed Priebus about “Axelrod’s assertion that it’s your fault that the Keystone thing got killed because you tried to force an early decision?” Priebus ridiculed the charge: “Well I think myself, and everyone in the studio, chuckled all about at the same time when he said that.”

From the Sunday, March 18 Face the Nation on CBS:

BOB SCHIEFFER: Mitt Romney said, I think as late as yesterday, that the President actually wanted gas prices to go up when he was running for President. He also said the President should fire his three top energy people because they were trying to get the price up. What's that about?

DAVID AXELROD: Well, I think it’s about nonsense is what it's about. Obviously you heard the President four years ago. He wasn't advocating higher gas prices. Again we have to have a national strategy for getting control of our energy future. That involves persistence, not just in increasing domestic oil and gas production. We've freed up tens of millions of new acres for exploration and for oil production in the future. But we have to explore these other avenues. If we don't do all of those things we're going to be right back here again every election season and politicians like Mr. Romney will pander and the poor American consumer will be left in the same position. So we need to keep going forward with an "all of the above" strategy on energy.

SCHIEFFER: Was it a mistake now in retrospect to stop that Keystone pipeline project? They were going to bring a pipeline to bring the oil down to the Gulf coast from Canada. That would put a lot of people to work amongst other things. Do you have regrets about not moving along with that?

AXELROD: You should direct that question to Mr. Priebus and to the Republican leadership in the Congress because what they did was force a premature decision on this. The State Department said they needed more time to evaluate the project and all of its implications including what it would mean for the water aquefers in Nebraska. And the Congress wanted to force a decision for political reasons. And they did. So not having the time to make a proper decision, they had to decline this proposal....

...

REICE PIEIBUS: He’s defending a President that when gas prices were a dollar eighty-five a gallon when he took over and he defends the President’s position when the President’s own energy czar said -- and this is undisputed -- that he wanted gas prices to go to European levels-

SCHIEFFER: When did he say that?

PRIEBUS: It was years ago. So that we could be forced to drive, you know, battery-operated cars and scooters around. So, he's back-pedaled on that statement. But very quickly, the Obama administration’s finding itself in a whole lot of trouble because once again we've got a President who says one thing and then he does another. So in any event, I think that when it comes to gas prices this President has taken the country completely backwards and this idea that David Axelrod is spinning that now we’ve got record production, we’ve got record production because of the actions of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton years ago because it takes time. Well, this President shut down on-shore drilling, he shut down off-shore drilling, he shut down Keystone. And so now we’re sitting in a place where better off today than we were three years ago and we’ve got a President who is now back on the campaign trail again talking about an all of the above energy policy. It’s ridiculous.

SCHIEFFER: What about Mr. Axelrod’s assertion that it’s your fault that the Keystone thing got killed because you tried to force an early decision?

PRIEBUS: Well I think myself, and everyone in the studio, chuckled all about at the same time when he said that...

He adds a sense of wisdom and integrity to the role of news reader. Why would anyone want to replace him. If networks were really interested in informing rather than forming public opinion, Schieffer would never be able to get away with giving the impression Obama and his administration never made such comments. From the perspective of CBS, this is a victory.

Bob Schieffer, if he had one lonely onion,

Submitted by TheHistorian on Sun, 03/18/2012 - 4:50pm.

would have asked Axelrod why Obama had blocked the Keystone XL AFTER HIS STATE DEPARTMENT HAD APPROVED IT. But Schieffer is a mouthpiece of the Dhimmocratic establishment that wants a needy America to vote it into perpetual office, and will do that by killing free-enterprise and then blaming it on the Republicans. Exhibit A is this economy. Exhibit B is their taking money from Social Security in the form of a "payroll tax" rebate so that they can convert it into a needs-only program from the insurance program it used to be. Exhibit C is taking $500MM from Medicare funds to fund ObamaCare and using it to buy pharmaceuticals for oldsters who didn't get their Part D supplemental insurance purchased.

I hope those that make over $40,000/year want their taxes to go up. That is what will happen in 2013 when the Bush Tax Cuts (only for the rich is the BS message) go up by 50%. Or the tax increase on the $75K plus when the Alternative MInimum Tax takes hold. Obama is for taxing all while telling you the "rich must pay more". He is not a class warrior. He is a big government stooge.

Can someone tell me what Reince Prius actually DOES?

Submitted by gopcongress on Sun, 03/18/2012 - 5:21pm.

Yes, the pun on his last name (Priebus) is intended. This GOP leader has been as ineffective as party head throughout the primary process as the Prius is in becoming an effective means of transportation. In addition, what is the National GOP doing to promote races in Congress? While the candidates themselves make the strongest cases, it doesn't help that the national leadership kowtows to the socialist media every which way but loose.

This is why I wish that Sarah Palin, as soon as she knew she was not going to run for President, would have taken over the RNC instead. Imagine her influence in the entire process:

1. Herman Caine would not have been knocked around fecklessly without support from the official committee on such vacuous charges.
2. Most of the debates would involve GOP-selected moderators. It's OUR political party, dammit!! We don't go around messing with the Democrats and their moderators when they have THEIR debates. We can handle the press after the fact, but we can't have the press DICTATE our debates. We don't need moderators who get their marching orders from 1600 Penn.
3. You are a tea party candidate. Who would you like to introduce you: Sarah or Reince?

You get the picture...

You're dead on right about the moderators, the networks, and the debates, the TEA party agenda, and basically the whole spectrum of 'Republican/conservative' thinking. Who's more uninformed?

Submitted by pbthinker on Sun, 03/18/2012 - 5:55pm.

I don't know who's more uninformed, the MSM, or the people who depend on them for their news. I would think there have to be a few people who watched CBS this morning that know Chu had to walk back his statement this week and are wondering how come Scheiffer didn't know that.

If I'm the Republican Party, I refuse to go on these shows because they have hosts who are uninformed, don't want to discuss the issues, and are obviously in the tank for the Democrats. If you're forced to go on with them, you need to be more forceful when they start asking you about the war on women and all that petty stuff.

It appears to me Schieffer is the least informed of the bunch and it's a toss-up who's more in the tank between Gregory and Stephanopolos. CNN is just hopeless, Candy Crowley, today, kept on trying to get Santorum to say he'd quit the race if Romney was close to getting the nomination. Her line of questioning, aside from being a waste of time, also took up over half the interview. Last week, she interviewed Harry Reid for 15 minutes and not once did she press him on the Senate not passing a budget.

Not only is the MSM, inept, they're morally bankrupt for not doing their job. One thing they aren't is stupid, they know exactly what they're doing.

Vote Republican - Then you'll only be called a racist one more time.

The simple fact is that the Dollar is so weak about $0.30 the last I saw figures on it that everything is going to cost more what with Obama printing out dollars like he has and spending them over seas for the "Arab spring" or the millions of dollars he is spending to rebuild Mosques world wide has driven the value of the dollar to new lows that is driving the cost of oil up and at the pump for gasoline first we must reestablish our currency with precious metals backing it and second stop spending so much over seas for his pet projects and in support of The Muslim as he has been doing that old adage charity starts at home should be how he is spending all this money
