CNN Reporters Call CPAC a ‘Conservative Petri Dish’

By Brent Baker | February 09, 2012 | 14:50

Shortly before noon Thursday, live from the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), CNN political reporter Peter Hamby described the gathering as a “conservative petri dish” to measure “how Mitt Romney is received and how his challengers are received too.” Anchor Suzanne Malveaux chimed in: “I love that, conservative petri dish. That’s a great way to describe it.”

A petri dish is defined as “a shallow circular dish with a loose-fitting cover, used to culture bacteria or other microorganisms.” As if conservatives are some kind of organism in a contained space to be studied from above by the “scientists” at CNN for our harmful effects. We’re not the Ebola virus, but that seems as if it’s how CNN sees conservatives. Video below.

Hat tip to Washington Examiner’s Paul Bedard and his “Washington Secrets” column.

From CNN Newsroom at 11:52 EST AM this morning, Thursday, February 9:

CNN REPORTER PETER HAMBY, AT CPAC:  Tomorrow is a big, big day here. Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum just a few days after Santorum had that February 7th sweep. Riding high on a lot of momentum. They're all speaking here. Now remember four years ago, Mitt Romney came here as sort of the conservative alternative to the establishment frontrunner John McCain and Romney got a very warm reception here, the crowd really loved him. He dropped out here at CPAC after giving a pretty good speech. Now, this time of course Mitt Romney is that establishment, sort of moderate centrist frontrunner with two conservative insurgents, three, rather, on the side. So it will be interesting to see in this kind of conservative petri dish how Mitt Romney is received and how his challengers are received too, Suzanne.

ANCHOR SUZANNE MALVEAUX: I love that, conservative petri dish. That’s a great way to describe it.

So I guess I wouldn't be out of line if I called some lib/Dem/progressive conference a 'septic tank'???

Classic! "cesspool"

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Thu, 02/09/2012 - 3:57pm.

"my septic system works" is a great LOL! Cesspool stinks & is not working out so great! They are trying their best to pull everyone in with them. It is the welfare way; put everyone out of business with high and rediculous regulations, high taxes, high liability, high incentive to give up!

to fill countless hours on a cable station such as CNN that hardly anyone watches? It's not fun and when a guest reporter from the same station comes up with a pithy analogy well, she just had to run with it although on second thought miasma would be a better description. Even so, aren't they both adorable?

'Tiss true, that

Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 02/09/2012 - 4:08pm.

"That’s a great way to describe it."

'Tiss true, that. After all, most of the cures for what ails mankind started in a petri dish. Even penicillin was cultured in a petri dish.

CPAC, culturing the cure for the liberal disease that inflicts mankind! Now that would be a great motto!

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States. The US Constitution

Unless you're a fetus. The US Supreme Court

Or Anwar al-Awlaki.

I had a similar but different thought, Cobra.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Thu, 02/09/2012 - 4:37pm.

"Conservative petri dish" is actually a great complement, if only CPAC would be that.

After all, besides cooking up cures for all kinds of ills that plague mankind, a petri dish can be used to cultivate devastating little critters that can cause the extinction of the liberal segment of mankind!

Now that is an analogy that I can live with.

I actually don't mind this one.

What is a petri dish? A bunch of cells in a confined area engaged in a battle of the fittest.

What is CPAC? A bunch of opinionated patriots in a confined area engaged in a battle of the fittest.

Compare and contrast to the Democrats, who are akin to a dormant brain trust.

If "petri dish" can be twisted into a pejorative term evidencing

liberal media bias--as Brent has done in this case--there is no word or phrase in the English language which is safe from such absurd inferences.

So Jer, if they would have

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 2:29am.

So Jer, if they would have said 'conservative forward thinkers'.............or 'conservative policy makers'................it would mean the same thing as a 'petri dish'??? You're a smart guy, Jer ol' buddy - I can't believe you'd try and back your claim up like that. I can guaran-damn-tee you that the 'petri dish' comment was meant to be a 'chop', as we used to say back in high school. Tell me otherwise...............

Sorry, killa...

Submitted by Jer on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 3:12am.

I read the transcript, listened to the audio and voice inflections...very straight forward and matter of fact. No way that was a "chop".

There's nothing inherently derogatory or insulting about a "petri dish" nor was it made so by the manner or context in which it was used.

So, I imagine you can come up

Submitted by Smartypants on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 8:25am.

So, I imagine you can come up with all sorts of examples of CNN reporters referring to liberal groups with this kind of language. Don't try too hard; it's not out there.

I gotta go with Immortal Fish on this one...

Submitted by Jer on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 7:34pm.

There's not even the slightest implication that CPAC is some sort of collection of harmful organisms or lethal microbes being studied by political scientists to identify an ideological disease.

The reporter is simply saying the CPAC meeting will be a useful metric for gauging the comparative reactions to the disparate philosophies and positions of three potential Republican nominees within a relatively homogenous environment--representing a significant sector of the conservative base of the party. Petri dish is a pretty good metaphor for such testing. There's nothing demeaning or offensive about it.

Jer

I don't know if it has ever been used in association with any liberal groups, but if it were used in the same context as it was in this case, it wouldn't bother me in the least.

Yeah

Submitted by stratman on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 3:10am.

The smirk on the guy's face and the chuckle he gave, combined with the fact that Obama supporting Leftists in the media display their contempt for Republicans with less filtering as time progresses, should in no way connote pejorative metaphors coming from them.

Occupy Wall Street tent village petri dish vs. CPAC petri dish. Are either a pejorative, and if so, how?

Blame your Leftist brethren who have been perverting words and concepts for years.

Well, Jer..........I know I'm

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 4:06am.

Well, Jer..........I know I'm an opinionated blue-collar country boy, but I just watched the video clip again, and I've got to say - that little twerp is a snot-nosed queebie who probably has NO redeeming social or intellectual value, and he probably thought that he was hitting some kind of home-run with his 'petri-dish' comment..............and the dumbell bimbo on the other end of the cable gave him the response he was looking for.

As for anyone else watching it.................just another 'gag me' StateRun Media dumb-ass comment. These clowns are like little farts.............you hear them, they stink a little bit, and then they're gone.

Now, lemme see here Jer...........if Sean Hannity was covering some lib/Dem/progo convention............and he called them a 'petri dish' - what do you think the media results would be - honestly???

And actually, I don't care..............I allready know what the hell is going on.

The term has a negative

Submitted by Smartypants on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 8:27am.

The term has a negative connotation to it; there is no question about it. We do not see msm using this kind of terminology to describe Democrats or liberal causes. To deny the negative implication of referring to conservatives as a "petri dish" is absurd.

Honestly, who spoke it and how often to they frame conservatives in a positive light? That may not be proof, but could reflect their frame of mind.
