CNN’s King Forwards Bush 41’s ‘Courage’ to Hike Taxes as Model for Current GOP

Interviewing former Vice President Dick Cheney at the Reagan library, CNN’s John King recalled how former President George H.W. Bush “made an incredibly tough personal and political choice” to raise taxes. King touted how Bush “had the courage knowing it might cost him re-election.”

As he and Cheney sat overlooking the Air Force One Pavilion, King pointed to Bush as a model for Republicans today: “There are some people now saying that we need a moment like that and that the Republicans should give President Obama some tax increases as long as they get from him significant spending cuts and a big deficit reduction package. Should Republicans learn from George H.W. Bush and sit down with the President and cut a deal?”

Cheney, no surprise, didn’t agree.

(Bush lost, so why wouldn’t Republicans have “learned” from Bush to not break pledges to not raise taxes? If the virtue is in going against your party, how about pressing liberal Democrats to agree to actual budget cuts which really occur?)

King proceeded to note that conservative anger at Bush fueled the “Grover Norquists of the world with the pledge, ‘I’ll never raise taxes.’” King worried: “Is that the right thing for the country?”

From the pre-recorded interview, conducted on Tuesday, as run on the Thursday, September 22 John King USA which is carried by CNN at 7 and 11 PM EDT:

JOHN KING: How would you rate George H.W. Bush in a sentence or two as President of the United States?

FORMER VICE PRESIDENT DICK CHENEY: I think he gets high marks as President.

KING: He also made an incredibly tough personal and political choice when the country faced a situation not unlike what we’re going through in our politics today when our deficit and concerns about the deficit and potential effect of dragging the economy were front and center. George H.W. Bush had the courage, knowing it might cost him re-election, knowing for sure it would cost him support with his conservative base, to violate the central domestic policy pledge of his campaign, “read my lips, no new taxes.” And he called everybody out to Camp David at Andrews Air Force Base and he agreed to a package that caused him to violate that promise.

There are some people now saying that we need a moment like that and that the Republicans should give President Obama some tax increases as long as they get from him significant spending cuts and a big deficit reduction package. Should the Republicans learn from George H.W. Bush and sit down with the President and cut a deal?

CHENEY: I wouldn’t put it that way, John. I think that the panel that’s been appointed, the special debt reduction panel, clearly has its work cut out for it. You’ve got some good people on that panel. They’re going to have to come up with some kind of a package that can
gain broad support in the Congress.

KING: Conservatives are still furious at George H.W. Bush. They say that’s proof, that’s proof, and that’s why you have the Grover Norquists of the world with their pledge, “I’ll never raise taxes.” Is that the right thing for the country?

CHENEY: I think the notion of a big tax increase now whatever the guise or the rationale is exactly the wrong thing to do in the midst of one of the worst recessions we've had in modern times.

Liberals are hell bent to increase taxes. It doesn't matter if it's insane or even how much - it's officially pathological now.

Everybody knows the reason Bush 41 lost the election...

Submitted by jawebster1 on Fri, 09/23/2011 - 4:22am.

to Clinton is because he thought he could trust the Democrats to keep their promise to cut spending as just long as he went back on his promise to not raise taxes.

Bush went back on his promise and guess what? The Democrats broke their promise. There was no cut in spending.

King wants to sabotage the GOP by having them agree to raise taxes, which they won't, because they have learned their lesson about trusting the Democrats to cut spending.

That is why they refused to agree to a $10 spending cut for every $1 of new taxes in one of their debates.

Cheney, as sick as he is, runs circles around these guys.

King asks Cheney to rate Bush

Submitted by Jack Bauer on Fri, 09/23/2011 - 5:35am.

King asks Cheney to rate Bush 41 in a sentence, or two.

The former VP does it in one.

Then King proceeds to make a convoluted 160 word, FIVE long sentences, really long sentences follow up. This is an interview with the former VP, and the "interviewer" speaks more then subject..

All of the above Mr Obama? --- How about ALL OF THE BELOW, instead.

I love Cheney.

King tries to set him up, and he responds, "I wouldn’t put it that way, John."  Everybody (except maybe King himself) knows exactly what Cheney was saying:

"John, you ignorant slut."

"Beauty is only skin deep, but liberal's to the bone." - me

In 1992 they bludgeoned George HW Bush for going back on his word and raising taxes. Why would any thinking, sane republican believe anything that the democrat liars say?

If you can remember only one thing about democrats it is they are first and foremost LIARS. All of them.

Bush I raised taxes, after

Submitted by felizagain on Fri, 09/23/2011 - 2:44pm.

Bush I raised taxes, after saying he would not.
Let me see, how did that work out for the Republican Democrats liked, for the Republican the liberal media could
stomach and wax poetically about once his loss was cemented.................he lost big time. He lost the White House -
the type of Republican Democrats like - one that loses.

If raising taxes would solve our debt problem, I'd get it.
But, raising taxes only puts more funds into the hands of lawmakers.
The lawmakers have a proven track record.
Give Washington D.C. more cash by way of taxs, & we know what happens: D.C. lawmakers find new
ways to spend it! On anything! More govt. programs, not less. More spending, not less.

I keep turning on the television, computer, open up a dinasour newspaper, listen to the radio, and hope, just one time, really, one small time, to actually read or hear 'news'. Facts, information, particulars about an event, person, historical timeline.

Not an opinion.
No commentary by a person w/a sprayed on tan, hair that doesn't move, treated eyelashes & eyebrows, most likely not a college graduate, and if so, not a specialist in international relations, politics, or economics. More often than not, in
communication or tv. Written by someone w/a long time bias one way or another.

News, just facts.

Let me decide what that guy said, what the president meant, what Boehner or Reid are doing, what Israel or France
are up to, let me figure it out.

When did we get so dumb, we need a talking head, or a paper reporter or blogger, to tell us what we just saw or read
all over again?

LOL

One of the over-used TLRs in the history of texting, but occasionally it's true and this comment caused roars of out loud laughter at my house.

"Courage", to liberal courage is always doing something that either gets them on the front page of a newspaper or the top story on a new cast. Rarely does courage to a liberal involve jail-time or severe persecution.
