NBC’s Williams Prods Obama to Force Congress Into ‘Sudden Breakout of Sanity’

By Brent Baker | August 08, 2011 | 20:03

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, who the week before last cited “the debt ceiling, which rational people agree needs to be raised,” on Monday evening again seemed to take a shot at Tea Party members of Congress as he urged President Barack Obama to fulfill a “leadership moment” in order “to force Congress into a sudden breakout of sanity.”

Williams inquired of CNBC’s David Faber:

I'm not a historian, but I think this is a leadership moment, potentially, for the President of the United States. He's getting pressure to force Congress into a sudden breakout of sanity. If that happens, how long until we could get our top credit rating back?

In a story on the Monday, August 8 NBC Nightly News, CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo included this soundbite from Dan Arbess of Perella Weinberg Partners: “Some day we will thank S&P for the credit downgrade because it is a message to Washington that we must begin to address the long-term solvency of the United States of America.”

Picking up on that assertion, Williams then had this exchange:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: Let’s go over to CNBC’s global headquarters. David Faber is there for us tonight. David, let’s pick up on the point that last gentleman made. I'm not a historian, but I think this is a leadership moment, potentially, for the President of the United States. He's getting pressure to force Congress into a sudden breakout of sanity. If that happens, how long until we could get our top credit rating back?

DAVID FABER, CNBC: It could still be some time until at least S&P comes back. These are long-term problems. They aren't solved overnight. Yet that certainly would be a positive. I think you saw the President today trying to engender confidence, Brian, in the press conference because confidence, it would seem over the last couple of weeks, has come in short supply given the debate over the debt ceiling, the downgrade by S&P and, of course, days like this when the market, all which of can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You simply don't want to do much in terms of making an investment if you're a consumer or a CEO.

The breakout of sanity MUST start with the POTUS.

Submitted by merly1 on Mon, 08/08/2011 - 8:06pm.

He is Owebama. What else needs to be said?
Budget 101 should be his first course, rather than inviting Paul Ryan to
a speech and savaging Ryan's real budget proposal that would have kept us AAA.

Isn't it funny

Submitted by g00se99 on Mon, 08/08/2011 - 8:13pm.

Last week there was this big reaction from many on the right saying, "Vote yes, It's the best that can be done and its a win". Now congress wants to get back together and redo the deal. What a total farce this has turned into. GOP still had time and should have voted NO. They got scared and caved and now its plainly obvious that the US is screwed.

MIssed Opportunity

Submitted by Wildcatter1980 on Tue, 08/09/2011 - 10:52am.

Boehner and the Republicans missed their opportunity to place the onus for this mess squarely on the Obama, "Dingy Harry" Reid and the democrats.

After the House passed Cut, Cap and Balance, they should have engaged in an ad and speaking campaign saying that they had done what was necessary to avoid the crisis by submitting Cut, Cap and Balance (CCB) which clearly addressed the concerns being expressed by credit ratings services. If the Senate and the President failed to pass and sign CCB into law, respectively, the consequences of their failure to do so would be squarely on them. As we have seen, Reid and Obama figuratively voted "Present."

...we know the vast majority of the lamestream news media are nothing but scribes, "water carriers" and propagandists for Obama, the democrats and the rest of the liberal secular progressives.

If, however, they did the job the Constitution intended them to do, the news media would be placing such intense pressure on them that it would be highly likely that Obama, Biden, and Reid all would resign. If this were, say, Israel, there would be "no confidence" votes being taken against them.

Piss on you Brian! THE ONLY

Piss on you Brian!

THE ONLY adults in the room are Tea Party folks who want to bring fiscal sanity into D.C. It's your party that is printing more money in order to prop up a bigger gov't under Obama's orders. Wait until the other credit agencis follow suit, you might not be able to get enough votes for school board you ass-wipe! Your party has been warned about excess spending and you still want to spend an adiitional $12 trillion on top on the $14 .5 trillion???

Piss on the left for driving the economy into hell. This is YOUR party Brian, not the Tea Party.

Brian Williams still not familiar with the American people

Submitted by Gary Hall on Mon, 08/08/2011 - 8:22pm.

This deserves a little closer look at:

  • NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, who the week before last cited “the debt ceiling, which rational people agree needs to be raised,”

"Rational?" Does Brian Williams (a little sarc here) actually believe that the majority of folks in the country are rational?

  • Jul 12, 2011 – 20-percentage-point edge in opposition to raising the debt ceiling in Gallup's polling.
  • July 20, 2011 - Fox News poll -- ost American voters oppose raising the national debt limit; 60% opposed to 35% supporting raising the debt.
  • May, 2011, 47% say they don't want their member of Congress to vote to raise the limit, compared to 19 percent who do.

And on the quote from Dan Arbess of Perella Weinberg Partners:

  • Some day we will thank S&P for the credit downgrade because it is a message to Washington that we must begin to address the long-term solvency of the United States of America.”

As Rick Santelli laid out today - we'll be thanking the Tea Party for that one.

More Tea Party opinion...

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 08/08/2011 - 8:57pm.

As recently as this past April, polling showed that 70% of Tea Partiers opposed ANY changes in Medicare or Medicaid.. A July survey revealed that the majority of Tea Partiers preferred a mix of revenues and spending cuts for deficit reduction. 44% of Tea Partiers [incorrectly] thought Obama had increased taxes. Only 2% were aware that taxes had actually been slightly reduced under Obama.

And these are the folks driving the debate over fiscal policy.

C'mon, Jer, you know better than to throw figures around without citations. Every lib on every blog and in every MSM outlet tosses around "facts" about the Tea Party that are so far from the truth they have to rent a rocket ship to get in the same orbit.

BTW, 90% of libs know nothing about what the Tea Party stands for, and the other 10% are mistaken. I cite John Kerry, moveon.org and The Daily Kos. So there.

Inspire confidence?

Submitted by UpNorth on Mon, 08/08/2011 - 8:26pm.

How can an alleged leader inspire confidence when he can't even be on time for something that HE scheduled?  If he can't read a clock or watch, he sure doesn't inspire any kind of confidence in anyone with a working brain.

And, he claims that the reason for the downgrade was the debate?  What.  A.  Maroon...  Hello, paging Barry Soetero, if you continue to do what you've always done, and expect different results, that's the definition of insanity.  And, you're doing what dems have always done.

Obama has zero leadership capability.

Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 08/08/2011 - 8:45pm.

He was so actively disengaged from the process of the budget negotiations that he was a hindrance and not a help. Having read some reports about how petulant and bratty his behavior was towards the congressional leaders, it is easy to understand why they shut him out of the process. It was clear he was out of his element, as his platitudes, self-importance and narcissism continually hampered the negotiations.

The Democrats have turned into such a party of hackneyed automatons incapable of spewing anything but whatever comes of Jay Carney's office that morning. Their co-conspirators in the mainstream media not only parrot those lines, but make no attempts whatsoever to be objective. The brazen prostitution of the media is nothing short of unnerving.

Dimwit Debbie and the Downgrade-o-crats clearly own this failing economy.

Obama is the archetype of King Ubu from Alfred Jarry's Dadaist work. He is tearing down our civilization right down to the ruins and then some. Pretty frightening to see this.

Dear Mr. Williams,

Submitted by ThisnThat on Mon, 08/08/2011 - 9:37pm.

For your information, it's not o'bama's job description to "force" Congress into anything. In fact, it's in my job description. And I worked hard last November to replace my Pelosi-robot with a functional, thinking, responsible representative in my district. We also replaced Judd Gregg with a more conservative Senator. So far, they are doing the job we elected them to do.

So please, Mr. Williams -- keep your advice to yourself. Don't try to replace my representatives with your unconstitutional ideology. Just because you're part of the dinosaur MSM doesn't give you the right to do my thinking or voting. I'm more than capable of doing those tasks myself.

Sincerely,

John Q. "Tea Party" Public.

QUOTE OF THE DECADE,

Submitted by gailannr on Tue, 08/09/2011 - 10:06am.

Some people have the vocabulary to sum up things in a way you can understand them. This quote came from the Czech Republic . Someone over there has it figured out. We have a lot of work to do.

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting an inexperienced man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president."
