CNN’s Piers Morgan Rails Against Republicans for Not ‘Compromising,’ Slaps Anti-Tax Hike Stand as ‘Crazy’

By Brent Baker | July 26, 2011 | 03:14

Acting as if he were trying out for a MSNBC gig, Piers Morgan used his half hour of CNN’s prime time, following President Barack Obama’s 9 PM EDT speech on the debt ceiling and House Speaker John Boehner’s response, to hit his guests from the left, presuming Obama holds the reasoned moral high ground while Boehner represents an obstinate and selfish position.

“A lot of people blame the financial crisis on Bush tax cuts and expensive wars,” Morgan told GOP Senator Rob Portman of Ohio in repeating a liberal talking point, demanding: “Isn't it time you guys took one for the team, the team being America?”

Morgan soon condemned Grover Norquist for being “intransigent” on taxes, contending: “Most impartial observers outside of America say that is crazy, and you have got to change your attitude to this and allow some tax increases.”

The Brit began by cuing up White House adviser David Plouffe with how Obama admirably pursued “compromise” complemented by “a direct appeal to the people of America,” while Boehner, in contrast, remained stubborn:  “‘Forget it. As things stand, we are not budging, let's not compromise.’”

To Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, Morgan fretted: “Didn’t sound to me like the Republicans are prepared to compromise very much.”

Going into an ad break, Morgan touted one finding from CNN’s latest poll while ignoring how it also quantified overwhelming public support for the plan which passed in the House:

With the clock ticking down to next week’s debt deadline, Americans are running out of patience and when it come to the blame game, the GOP just might have the most to lose. In a CNN/ORC poll, 51 percent of Americans said they would blame the Republican if there’s no deal to raise the debt ceiling. Far fewer, just 3 in 10, said they would blame the President.

When CNN's pollsters summarized the House GOP's “Cut, Cap and Balance” proposal, 66 percent answered in favor of the plan:

In another proposal, Congress would raise the debt ceiling only if a balanced budget amendment were passed by both houses of Congress and substantial spending cuts and caps on future spending were approved. Would you favor or oppose this proposal?

Morgan, however, continued CNN’s on-air blackout of that finding.

Morgan’s first questions to his four guests during the 9:30 PM EDT half hour on Monday night, July 25:

To White House adviser David Plouffe:

David Plouffe, I mean, it seemed to me the President was saying, “Look, we need compromise, we can make this work,” a direct appeal to the people of America. But Speaker Boehner made it absolutely, crystal clear: “Forget it. As things stand, we are not budging, let's not compromise.”

To Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer:

Senator Schumer, what did you make of both speeches tonight and in particular the emphasis on the word compromise? Didn't sound to me like the Republicans are prepared to compromise very much.

To Republican Senator Rob Portman, OMB Director for former President Bush:

Senator Portman, they've got a point, the Democrats, haven't the they? You're being pretty intransigent. You won't countenance any tax increases. How is the President supposed to balance his books?

You ran budgets for President George W. Bush. A lot of people blame the financial crisis on Bush tax cuts and expensive wars. Isn't it time you guys took one for the team, the team being America?

To Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform:

Grover, you're the eye of the tiger in all this. People take their lead from you on the Republican side and you’ve been intransigent. “There will be no tax increases.” Most impartial observers outside of America say that is crazy, and you have got to change your attitude to this and allow some tax increases.

One of his brothers was a Skyraider pilot in that same war, and is currently dying from cancer, and his oldest son was a SEAL officer.

Most made it back.

Some didn't.

Just once I'd like to see anyone from a three-letter network ask Harry Reid if it isn't time for the Dems to "take one for the team".  Ask him why they put election calculus ahead of the welfare of the economy.   Ask him why he doesn't care about putting 4,000+ people out of work while they screw around pushing for bennies for Andy Stern.

And, BTW, I'm sitting home this week courtesy of Harry and Barry, waiting for them to let the FAA go back to work.  Jackasses indeed.

Hey Killa & Dave...

Submitted by packman on Tue, 07/26/2011 - 8:03am.

Actually you probably have a lot more company than you think.

My Dad served aboard a destroyer escort in WWII - he passed away from a heart attack some years ago. I served in the USMC, did a tour in 'Nam. My brother served in the Air Force, another brother in the Navy. Oldest son was in the Army, served in Operation Desert Storm. Youngest son was a nuclear power specialist aboard a U.S. Navy submarine....

Yeah....some of us understand what it takes to keep our country free and are not afraid of the personal sacrifice it sometimes requires.

I too am pretty sick and tired of all these loud-mouthed lame-asses who come here from foreign countries and criticize us and tell us how fu**cked up we are. Well, they can all just take an aeronautical intercourse on a revolving pastry. If you've ever been in the military, you will be able to decipher that pretty easily.

So rest assured, there are many more out there who feel the same way.

Hey Pack............I know that you and a LOT of other's have similiar stories and beliefs and backgrounds and visions that are in the same line. And I'm not any different here, and certainly nothing special..........I'm just trying to get through every day, like most other 'folks' - don't you HATE it when Boy Barry calls us 'folks'???? So I want to salute everyone and anyone here who's coming from the same place, and believes in it!!!

Mostly, I was just backing up my ol' buddy Dave last night - I could tell that he was fired up - and he's got every reason to be, as far as I'm concerned. And for some reason, we've been taking a lot of flak lately for our passion and our dedication to our principles......often to the point of being asked to 'settle down'.............

Well, if we 'settle down'..........stick a fork in us, cause we'll be DONE!!!!

I salute you and your families for their honor, bravery and service to this great land. I personally don't have a problem with your words - some may call them crude, I call them "passionately patriotic!" It's natural for anger and blood pressure to rise when our country is under attack by socialist zealots who want to conform us to the rest of the world. I agree with both of you - who is this Piers twit to tell us how our country should be run? Why did he leave England if not so that he wouldn't be taxed to death and be able to keep most of his money?

And the word of the day is "intransigent" - Sesame Street or Password episode?

Piers Morgan is a British

Submitted by Jack Bauer on Tue, 07/26/2011 - 6:38am.

Piers Morgan is a British citizen and UK passport holder who DOESN'T EVEN GET A VOTE in the US.

In the UK this is who he votes for and campaigns for:

the self-proclaimed SOCIALIST LABOUR PARTY.

Now what the ***k is he doing on American TV telling lecturing American citizens about ANYTHING.

Especially as for almost a decade he edited the RABIDLY ANTI-AMERICAN tabloid, The Mirror, which day after day was filled with the most vile attacks on America,

Why is that? Surely America has a surplus of Homegrown Leftist Loons that it doesn't need to IMPORT another?

Note to all the Leftist Limp-Wrist Media Hacks: You won't EVER get your beloved 'tax hikes' because your 'Boy' won't articulate a defined plan of CUTS.

Take one for the team, huh?

Submitted by WingletDriver on Tue, 07/26/2011 - 7:48am.

That's kind of a funny thing to ask of the folks whose income is being taxed at an already alarming rate and yet the dems still want more of our hard-earned money to redistribute to their base (public sector unions, ACORN, Planned Parenthood, ACLU, ecoterrorists, General Electric). I wonder how many times Custer asked his guys to take one more for the team?

Morgan and his I'll are willfully ignorant of the ridiculous deficits the dems have run up since 2007 and accelerated since 2009. And likewise, Morgan seems blissfully unconcerned that this little form of nanny state has been tried and found wanting by all of these so-called "impartial observers outside of America." Greece is the canary in the European socialist coal mine, but Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Ireland are tanking also. The Soviet Union and Cuba showed how well a controlled economy works, so, hey, let's do the same. Who are these impartial outsiders, Piers? Soros? George Clooney?

Because I'm basically stupid..but here goes.If taxes were increased on the top 5% of the wealthy, I would feel better. But since I am depressed cause the end of the world is coming on Aug2..I'll do none of the above.

"Can any of you explain how increasing taxes would be good for the current economy?"

Just look at the Clinton administration. He raised taxes, and the economy magically took off. If taxes had remained lower, the dot com boom never would have happened, and the internet would have been a flop, but since he raised taxes, everyone loved the internet instead, and happy days were here again. I think it's pretty clear at this point that rich people aren't creating jobs because their taxes aren't high enough. In fact, I think I overheard one just the other day saying "You know, I would create jobs and expand my business, but I'm just not being taxed enough. If only Obama would take more of my money, then I would feel comfortable working harder for less."

Piers, just a few questions

Submitted by ohio granny on Tue, 07/26/2011 - 10:01am.

What effective federal tax rate do you pay? How much do you earn on salary and investments and how much of it is tax exempt? I suspect you are like most democRATs who talk about everyone paying their "fair share" but feel you don't need to or are exempt.

And how about the 40 - 50 percent of the households that do not pay a dime in federal income taxes? Is it "fair" for them to demand some else pay more so they don't have to contribute?

And do you really think it is fair for unborn children to be saddled with such an enormous debt that they had no say about or any benefit from?

Just asking.

Submitted by Comrade Jim on Tue, 07/26/2011 - 11:41am.

Is a load of crap. When Dems have power they ram bills though over the objections of Republicans, public opinion, the markets and anybody else who gets in the way. When Reps hold the balance of power then Dems want to compromise.

The Dems eagerness to compromise shows that they hold a loosing hand. They can only win if the Reps fold as they usually do.
