Amanpour Does Obama’s Bidding in Pushing McConnell to Realize Need for ‘Revenue Raising’
On Sunday’s This Week, ABC’s Christiane Amanpour repeatedly hit Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell with the White House’s plea for “revenue raising” measures, often the new euphemism for tax hikes, but when she talked to Democratic Congressman Jim Clyburn, the Assistant Minority Leader in the House, she failed to press him about agreeing to GOP spending cut proposals and instead only asked him about prospects for a deal.
Amanpour began with how reasonable President Obama and Democrats, who “need revenue,” are acting: “Democrats are saying they’re not putting, for the moment, tax hikes on the table, but they need revenue, they’re talking about closing loopholes, subsidies for wealthy corporations. Is that out of the question for you, or are you willing to entertain that?”
When McConnell wouldn’t agree, with “NEW TAXES OFF THE TABLE?” as her on-screen heading, she followed up by pleading:
Are you willing, I mean this is a negotiation after all, to talk about any kind of revenue raising, for instance, ethanol subsidies, for instance, tax breaks for oil and gas corporations or corporate jets. Is there anywhere where revenue raising can happen without you saying it's a tax hike?
She wouldn’t let it go, despairing: “Are you now basically saying, all revenue increases off the table?”
After some questions on the implications of not raising the debt ceiling, Amanpour returned to taxes, I mean “revenue raising,” seeing “hope” some options can be found:
On this issue of raising revenue, you talked about not wanting any sort of tax hikes but you did agree to cut ethanol subsidies, the Senate did agree. Isn't that sort of -- doesn't that give some kind of hope that there is some sort of flexibility on this issue?
Instead, however, of showing some balance with Clyburn by pushing him on why he’s so insistent upon “raising revenue” or quizzing him about cutting spending a little more, Amanpour stuck to process questions:
> You just heard Senator McConnell talking about what is not on the table and what will not pass, as he says, any kind of revenue or tax hikes. So where is there room for any negotiation?
> Congressman Clyburn, you have seen, though, what you heard was Senator McConnell just been saying, and obviously they want to see more tax -- more rather spending cuts. So what do you think is going to be the result of the meetings between President Obama and the leadership when they start tomorrow?
> So what then gets one to a result because this has to come to some kind of a result?
Later, during the roundtable, Chrystia Freeland of Thomson Reuters touted Jon Huntsman as a “Republican version of Obama” – she meant it as a compliment -- and described Huntsman as the “darling” of the “media elite.” She opined:
I think there’s a chance that Huntsman is going to be a sort of Republican version of Obama with all the positives and negatives that entails. So I think he's looking very much like the darling of the elites, media elites, also Wall Street, business, they love that he’s shown up. He talks in complete sentences. He can give you an analysis of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party that will knock your socks off.
Ananpour’s push-questions to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on the Sunday, June 26 This Week on ABC:
> Let me ask you this. It seems to have boiled down to a battle over taxes. Now the White House, the administration, the Democrats are saying they’re not putting, for the moment, tax hikes on the table, but they need revenue, they’re talking about closing loopholes, subsidies for wealthy corporations. Is that out of the question for you, or are you willing to entertain that?
> You’re saying there should be progress and everybody’s saying there has been fairly good progress in the talks that were led by Vice President Biden, that they were somewhere between $1.4 trillion to $2 trillion of cuts agreed to, but that the $4 trillion or so that’s required is not going to happen, say the administration, without some kind of revenue raising. So, putting aside the tax hikes, basic raw tax hikes, are you willing, I mean this is a negotiation after all, to talk about any kind of revenue raising, for instance, ethanol subsidies, for instance, tax breaks for oil and gas corporations or corporate jets. Is there anywhere where revenue raising can happen without you saying it's a tax hike?
> Are you now basically saying, all revenue increases off the table? Are you closing the door to closing any of these loopholes that we've been discussing?
....
> And one final question. On this issue of raising revenue, you talked about not wanting any sort of tax hikes but you did agree to cut ethanol subsidies, the Senate did agree. Isn't that sort of -- doesn't that give some kind of hope that there is some sort of flexibility on this issue?

Loopholes DO need to be

Loopholes DO need to be closed (GE needs to pay taxes, too.) And no private company should get a subsidy. Tax cuts aren't subsidies, though.

I agree and also they need to take a good look at Farm Subsidies.I don't think Letterman and Scottie Pippen should be getting them. Also some of these land developers who are going to turn plots into housing developments. At least where I live it happens.

**cough** GE **cough**
The biggest and most glaring example of 'throwing revenue away' is GE, which gets guv-mint money thrown their way and then aren't taxed--AT ALL--on it.. That was 'revenue' right there, yet no one seems to want to cement the connection between Imelt and Obamo. How hypocritical to shed a blind eye toward GE and then 'whine' about needing more revenue. That would be revenue that GE could have provided if not for those so-called 'loopholes.'

If folks haven't yet said "buh-bye" to Huntsman they should. His family's contributions to Harry Reid should be a red flag. I know it only cemented my aversion to him.
Sure, he says he personally never gave money to Reid but the family ties are enough to turn me off.
Add the execrable Associated
Submitted by TE on Mon, 06/27/2011 - 8:46am.
Add the execrable Associated (with terrorists) Press to the list of leftist political advocacy/lobbying groups (like ABC) that use the "revenue raising" euphemism in place of "tax raising". Today's militantly leftist Dallas Morning News carries a press release from the Associated (with terrorists) Press that comically uses the "revenue raising" euphemism three times:
"The Senate's top Republican said Sunday that throwing more tax revenue into the mix isn't the answer ...." [I didn't see McConnell on TV, but I highly doubt that McConnell said what the Associated (with terrorists) Press alleges he said, especially the part where the Associated (with terrorists) Press alleges that McConnell used the "tax revenue" formulation.]
"Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on ABC's This Week that proposals to raise tax revenue won't pass Congress."
"Democrats want to raise some revenue [hahahahahahahahahahaha!!] by closing loopholes and trimming tax breaks for big companies and wealthy people."
Of course, nowhere in the press release issued by the Associated (with terrorists) Press/Democrat party syndicate are the words "tax increase" used.
More redefining
Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 06/27/2011 - 8:51am.
What will they stoop to next, now they are changing the terms, redefining other terms just like before. First it was a contribution, now it's revenue?
The stupid thing is, they will get more revenue from sales if the taxes are lowered and they HAVE to know this. It can't be that much of an OCD on the dems; part that they want to raise taxes(I'm sorry, increase revenue) but then leave GE out of it for an example. If they did want to raise taxes, GE should have paid as well.
This is just more proof that the dems aren't really interested in helping anyone, they just want to keep the big government going and keep the people subjugated.

Why are we allowing the treasonous news media to dictate how we live our lives? Do we let them pick our next President? Do we want them to tell the gov't to raise our taxes? If we don't allow it, then why listen to anything the fools say?
Bush Tax Cuts Created Deficit

No intelligent person can say that the Bush Tax Cuts did not contribute to the deficit.
When right wingers say Obama wants to raise your taxes. They are only speaking for the top earners, not people like Joe the Plumber who corporate Republicans prey upon and take advantage of.
Get a grip, would you?
Submitted by Blonde on Mon, 06/27/2011 - 12:27pm.
There were deficits decades before Bush took office.
What added to the deficit during the Bush years was the EXPANDED spending as the RINO's in Congress tried to outspend democrats in order to remain popular, rather than sticking to the Republican mantra of limited government.
As for your "corporate republicans prey" nonsense.....PLEASE.....go back to the mothership and get some new talking points. Every single one you've posted today is beyond old, smelly, and refuted ad nauseum.

Spending Money You Don't Have = Defiicit

What happened to our revenue? Oh yeah, Bush and the RINOs tossed it out to the top income earners.
The one thing worse then excessive spending is spending with less revenue. Spending money you don't have = Deficit
Even the Cato Institute's cuts won't do it. We need revenue!!!!

Yes it is just awful that Bush and those other members of the GOP think people should be able to keep the money they've earned. So what if they've worked longer hours, studied harder, poured their money into their business's, and risked their personal wealth in creating more. They shouldn't be allowed to keep it! They should give it to people who spend it recklessly and give it to people who don't work as hard, save as much, or just aren't successful! Yes, that's the way to motivate people to create wealth and jobs and stimulate the economy. /sarc

Yet another poster that is consumed with pure resentment at the fact that because there are people that work harder, are smarter, and are more shrewd with what they earn, there are those who simply earn more.
Why don't we just confiscate all of the income and wealth of every American who dares earn a single penny over per capita income? Bet that would fill someone as resentful and as full of hate as yourself with pure joy.
If we REALLY wanted revenue, we would just have every single American pay 17% of their income in taxes, with absolutely no breaks or loopholes, regardless of income.

I am retired on a pension of less than $30,000 per year. Effective 01-01-11, after the Bush tax cuts expired, I have been hit with an additional $50 monthly payroll deduction for taxes. I don't believe I am among "the top earners" category. According to my tax preparer, I won't be getting any of that money back either.

You, like most non-linear thinking, government-educated morons, take the static view of the effects that changing tax rates have on economic activity, which will ultimately affect government revenues.
What you cannot comprehend is the fact that a guy out their busting his ass working while being screwed by the government in the form of already confiscatory taxes, is going to continue to work at the same performance level when the government goes to a fatter and longer rod for the screwing.
That's why government revenues nearly always fall when taxes are increased, as it causes changes in people's behavior.
I know many people who started their own businesses, and none of them did so to fund government.
Many, if not most of them, will be laying off their employees and shutting down if Obama raises their taxes, as most of them are barely hanging on as it is - those who haven't already gone under, I mean.
