NBC Most Excited by Palin’s E-Mail, Yet Fails to Dig Up Any ‘Bombshells’

Much of the media made fools of themselves with their excited obsession over the release of Sarah Palin’s gubernatorial e-mails, but NBC News went the furthest, sending, as did CNN, reporters to Juneau as the network uniquely led its Friday night newscast by hyping the non-news as a major event. “On the broadcast tonight,” anchor Lester Holt heralded, “mail call. Thousands of pages of e-mail from Sarah Palin's time as Governor. What we're learning about her tonight.”

Following a story from “national investigative correspondent” Michael Isikoff in which “MSNBC.com investigative reporter” Bill Dedman had the gall to complain “we waited longer for these records than Sarah Palin was Governor, almost a thousand days,” NBC’s David Gregory recognized, in an understatement: “As Mike and his team are finding, not a lot of bombshells here.”

ABC also got into the act, but didn’t send any on-air personnel to Juneau. On Saturday’s World News, however, John Berman trumpeted his big discovery proving Palin’s hypocrisy: “While these days Palin is criticizing parts of Michelle Obama’s national battle against obesity...she once e-mailed an aide asking for ‘low carb foods...just don’t want the kids to have too much sugar/white carb stuff.’” That should pretty much discredit her.

CBS showed the best news judgment, not mentioning the Palin e-mails on Friday or Saturday’s CBS Evening News.

Isikoff’s find – Palin once praised something candidate Barack Obama said: “Among the e-mails, this exchange from Palin to an aide written a few weeks before she was picked by McCain, praising then-candidate Obama’s energy policy speech. ‘He gave a great speech this morning in Michigan – mentioned Alaska,’ adding, ‘we need to take advantage of this and write a statement saying he's right on.’ Then in a later e-mail telling an aide, ‘he did say ‘yay’ to our gas line. Pretty cool. Wrong candidate.’ Palin later became one of Obama's fiercest critics on energy policy.”

From the top of the Friday, June 10 NBC Nightly News:

LESTER HOLT: Good evening, I'm Lester Holt, in tonight for Brian. Sarah Palin's short rise from obscurity to a source of endless political fascination reached a new level today as reporters lined up to scour thousands of pages of e-mails from her time as Alaska Governor. Looking for deeper insight and clues into her political ambitions. Responding to media requests, the state of Alaska released 24,000 pages of e-mails covering the period from December 2006, when she was sworn in as governor, to September 2008 when she was named John McCain's running mate. With Palin a potential presidential challenger, the question tonight is: Could her foes try to use them to try and define her candidacy? NBC’s national investigative correspondent Michael Isikoff has been examining some of those e-mails. He joins me now from Juneau, Alaska, with more. Michael, good evening.

MICHAEL ISIKOFF: Good evening, Lester. News organizations have waited nearly three years to get access to these documents. Stacks of e-mails from Palin's time as Governor. Palin and the state of Alaska fought having to make them public. But now that they are, a Palin spokesman said today that they show she was a very engaged Governor and that everybody should read them.

A media frenzy Alaska hasn't seen since 2008. Journalists jockeying to get their hands on thousands of pages of e-mails sent by Sarah Palin to more that 50 top aides and officials in Alaska. The 250 pounds of documents contain e-mails from Palin's first two years as Governor and continue through September 2008, including the chaotic first weeks after John McCain thrust her into the national spotlight as his running mate.

As Governor, Palin was a frenetic BlackBerry user, firing off e-mails but using her personal Yahoo e-mail account rather than government accounts to conduct state business -- all in an effort to keep her communications private. News organizations like MSNBC.com first requested the e-mails in 2008, but prying them loose from state archives hasn't been easy.

BILL DEDMAN, MSNBC.COM INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER: The state public records law calls for a ten day release of public records. We waited longer for these records than Sarah Palin was Governor, almost a thousand days.

ISIKOFF: Among the e-mails, this exchange from Palin to an aide written a few weeks before she was picked by McCain, praising then-candidate Obama’s energy policy speech. “He gave a great speech this morning in Michigan – mentioned Alaska,” adding, “we need to take advantage of this and write a statement saying he's right on.” Then in a later e-mail telling an aide, “he did say ‘yay’ to our gas line. Pretty cool. Wrong candidate.” Palin later became one of Obama's fiercest critics on energy policy. Palin says the e-mails won't be a distraction.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

SARAH PALIN, ON FOX NEWS SUNDAY, JUNE 5: I'm sure people are going to capitalize on this opportunity to go through 25,000 e-mails and perhaps take things out of context. They'll never truly know what the context of each one of the e-mails was or each one of the issues were that I was working on that day.

ISIKOFF: The e-mails have lots of redactions, and so far, there are no bombshells, but they do show Palin's irritation with what she calls the “lamestream media.” Writing from the McCain campaign trail, she writes in one e-mail: “It drives me crazy to catch all the corrections.” And in an earlier e-mail, “I feel like I'm at a breaking point with hurtful gossip.” Lester?

Press release by NBC

Submitted by ThisnThat on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 8:56am.

This non-news event is being brought to you by the bias-inducing sensational department of NBC news so that we can make innuendos and false statements about Palin; spread additional rumors about her intentions; and suggest devious motivations about her behavior in the months leading to her nomination of McCain's VP. We'll be repeating past rumors about her and her family; and we'll be inventing new findings and "deep meanings" found in the e-mails. We'll even do your thinking for you -- as usual -- by coming to conclusions that are repeated nightly by our newscasters. And any rumors we create will be repeated over and over again until we are successful at converting them into "truth" as we have done before. Believe us when we tell you -- there will be many, many Tina Fey moments before we are done.

Excellent. You nailed what they are doing!

Submitted by Red Jeep on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 8:57am.

Since the MSM seems to scared/ terrified of a Palin run they must be convinced she would win. Maybe we ought to nominate her right now and be done with it and let the wailing begin.

Yeah, and in another press

Submitted by ThisnThat on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 9:08am.

Yeah, and in another press release, NBC News announced that they are not -- and will not -- ask for any e-mails, birth certificates, or college transcripts from obama. Nor will they question obama's truthful statements regarding his association with rev Wright's hate-filled rants against America or association with radical Bill Ayers. That's because this would be judged as racist attempts to smear obama's great accomplishments, and because NBC News is dedicated to maintaining its professional, non-judgmental approach to world-class, honest reporting.

If this was Fox going over Mrs. Obama's emails, the feminist would be all over Fox,

This is going against Palin, so it is OK with the liberals.

I guess being liberal is only for liberals, us conservatives can do no right and we have no rights like the liberals.

I sometimes have had enough of this, that the MSM can do this but I as an average conservative cannot on national TV have a chance to answer these Pr--, excuse me, I almost wrote some word that cannot get printed, so I will use one I can, idiots

The lamestream media will do

Submitted by jdhawk on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 9:17am.

The lamestream media will do anything to keep from talking about this adminstrations dismal record on any area that you care to name.

Hey, let's talk "summer of recovery." No, there isn't one - for the third summer in a row

Hey, let's talk foreign policy. No, we learned that we are now in a fourth war.

Hey, let's talk energy policy. No, the EPA is about to make policy that would raise our energy costs to heat and cool our homes by 2 to 3 times what it costs now.

Hey, let's talk about tax policy. Between duhbama care and the lifting of the Bush tax cuts in a year and half, tax rates will go as high as 68 percent of a wage earner! This is an outrageous over the top amount. But, this administration wants small businesses to hire?

Hey, let's talk about . . . .

Well, you get the idea.

Submitted by Chris Norman on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 9:19am.

The Sacramento Bee had the best (or worst) liberal spin on "the story about nothing" of all: their headline on, I believe, Friday read: "Palin's E-Mails Show Her Obsessed with Image"*. Perfect example of carefully choosing words to imply a negativeness. This is the most insidious kind of bias of all.

*They've altered the headline in the archived story to read: "Palin emails show her efforts to monitor state business along with her image"

What annoyed me the most...

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 1:38pm.

...wasn't that the supposedly "big dog" newsies did this dirt digging, but rather one statement that represents the entire issue:

"On Saturday’s World News, however, John Berman trumpeted his big discovery proving Palin’s hypocrisy: “While these days Palin is criticizing parts of Michelle Obama’s national battle against obesity...she once e-mailed an aide asking for ‘low carb foods...just don’t want the kids to have too much sugar/white carb stuff.’” That should pretty much discredit her."

Right there is clearly demonstrated the entire purpose of this exercise in futility, despite ANY disavowals these biased, moronic, elitist, scumbags may make.

P.S. To World News - Palin wasn't trying to inflict HER values and ideas on the ENTIRE NATION like Michelle is. Palin was doing what ALL parents should be doing - taking responsibility for her children (you know, like they USED to???)...

About the time BO's 3 yrs and the birth certificate -- on the latest "only one Hawaii gives out," his Dad's home country is listed as Kenya, which did not come into being as a country until 2 yrs. after the year BO was supposedly born. And it has the term "African-American" on it, which was not in use at that time. So even after 3 yrs, he can't get it right.

Has anyone yet demanded Barney Frank, Chuckie Rangle, or San Fran Nan's personal emails? I can't believe that the press was able to get this stuff, but if they were able to, then I think that everyones should be free game!

Of course, Palin's concern about her "image" is much, much worse than the misuse, graft, corruption, thievery, prostitution and destruction of opponent's reputations, which surely would be in the emails of those three criminals.

Palin's emails

Hey, I just went through hers...boring! When do I get Weiner's emails with pictures and maybe even
Obama's transcripts/admission papers so that I can frame them with those of Al Gore and John Kerry. You remember them...the media touted them as superior intellects, while Bush (who had a Harvard MBA and was a jet fighter pilot...no dumb ones there; dummies are dead) was a Texas cowboy and moron. Then , somehow, Kerry's and Gore's college transcripts were leaked and lo and behold...about a "genteman's C" for overall GPA for both and one of them did not seem to have a major.

Tell me, has the LSM ever

Submitted by Scuba Dude on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 10:18am.

Tell me, has the LSM ever done something like this before? "Investigate" a former Governors' email the way they are doing to Sarah Palin's?

Besides all the missing documents from The Absentee President has any of these jokers asked former Senator Chris Dodd where all the documents are from the sweetheart deal he got from Countrywide for his mortgages?  He was a Friend of Angelo after all and one of the people that had a hand in crashing the housing market.  You would think there would be a story in his correspondence.

Obama would be even more damaged goods than he is now. Honesty and truth are two words the MSM and their lefty pals can not abide; they are scared silly by them.

Five News Items of Less

Submitted by Scuba Dude on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 2:09pm.

Five News Items of Less Importance than Sarah Palin's E-mails courtesy of the National Review Online:

China is about to launch its first aircraft carrier.

A RAND nuclear expert calculates that within two months, Iran will have enough weapons-grade uranium to manufacture a nuclear weapon.

An analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that if the number of people looking for work today were the same as the number when President Obama took office, the reported unemployment rate for May would be 11 percent rather than 9.1 percent.

Hearings are beginning in the House on allegations that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms knowingly allowed criminal suspects to purchase weapons and and smuggle them into Mexico for Mexican drug cartels.

The president is creating yet another commission — this time to cut government waste.

Ohh there is a bomshell in here

Submitted by CSM on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 2:12pm.

There is a bombshell in these emails. It is just that the MSM would rather fold their tent and go home rather then admit it.
The bombshell, to them, is that Sarah Palin is a decent, honest, family loving person who also happened to be a very good governor to boot. Yes, I know she left office early.
Sarah Palin trying to get her kids to eat right is not in the same league as trying to make the entire nation eat as Mrs O would like to force you to do. Oh the hypocrisy!!
Find and read the email she wrote to her family written before Trig was born. If anyone thinks that this email was written by someone who does not care for her family needs their head examined. I happen to think everyone in the MSM does need this treatment.
I don't know if Sarah will run for President or not. I kinda wish she would but of course the decision is up to her and her family. And I am sure she will make the correct decision based on these factors.
