Humiliated Ed Schultz: ‘Laura Ingraham, I Am Sorry, Very Sorry’ for ‘Vile Language;’ Concedes He’s ‘Embarrassed’ MSNBC

In full retreat, a humiliated and somber Ed Schultz opened his MSNBC show on Wednesday night by apologizing to Laura Ingraham for using, on his radio show, “vile and inappropriate language” to describe her, language he did not repeat. On Tuesday, the left-wing host had slimed the conservative talk radio host as a “right-wing slut” and a “radio slut.” (After Schultz’s statement, Thomas Roberts hosted the rest of the hour.)

Schultz pleaded: “I am deeply sorry, and I apologize. It was wrong, uncalled for and I recognize the severity of what I said. I apologize to you, Laura, and ask for your forgiveness.” He added that “I also met with management here at MSNBC, and understanding the severity of the situation and what I said on the radio and how it reflected terribly on this company, I have offered to take myself off the air for an indefinite period of time with no pay.” The official NBC management statement, however, said he had agreed to “one week of unpaid leave.”

Schultz concluded:

To the staff here at MSNBC, I apologize for embarrassing the company and the only way that I can really make restitution for you is to give you a guarantee, and the only way that I can prove my sincerity in all of this is if I never use those words again. Tonight, you have my word that I won't. Laura Ingraham, I am sorry. Very sorry. I'll be back with you in the coming days.

Earlier, with NBC’s statement and the text of what Schultz said about Ingraham: “MSNBC Suspends Ed Schultz After He Calls Laura Ingraham a ‘Right-Wing Slut.’” [Audio: Downloadable MP3 clip from Schultz’s May 24 radio show]

Schultz’s remarks at the top of the May 25 The Ed Show on MSNBC:

Good evening, Americans and welcome to The Ed Show from New York tonight. Thomas Roberts will be here tonight anchoring the program, but first I want to take some time to offer an apology. On my radio show yesterday I used vile and inappropriate language when talking about talk show host Laura Ingraham. I am deeply sorry, and I apologize. It was wrong, uncalled for and I recognize the severity of what I said. I apologize to you, Laura, and ask for your forgiveness.

It doesn't matter what the circumstances were. It doesn't matter that it was on radio and I was ad-libbing. None of that matters. None of that matters. What matters is what I said was terribly vile and not of the standards that I or any other person should adhere to. I want all of you to know tonight that I did call Laura Ingraham today and did not make contact with her and I will apologize to her as I did in the message that I left her today.

I also met with management here at MSNBC, and understanding the severity of the situation and what I said on the radio and how it reflected terribly on this company, I have offered to take myself off the air for an indefinite period of time with no pay. I want to apologize to Laura Ingraham. I want to apologize to my family, my wife. I have embarrassed my family. I have embarrassed this company.

And I have been in this business since 1978, and I have made a lot of mistakes. This is the lowest of low for me. I stand before you tonight in front of this camera in this studio in an environment that I absolutely love. I love working here. I love communicating with all of you on the radio and the communication that I have with you when I go out and do town hall meetings and meet the people that actually watch. I stand before you tonight to take full responsibility for what I said and how I said it, and I am deeply sorry.

My wife is a wonderful woman. We have a wonderful family. And with six kids and eight grandkids, I try to set an example. In this moment, I have failed. And I want you to know that I talked to my sons especially about character and about dignity and about the truth. And I tell you the truth tonight that I am deeply sorry and I tell them every day that they have to live up to standards if they want to be a successful human being in life. And I have let them down. I have never been in this position before to the point where it has affected so many people. And I know that I have let a lot of people down.

MSNBC.com has video of the entire four-minute statement.

Earlier this month, Schultz “earned” the “Quote of the Year” at the MRC’s 2011 “DisHonors Awards” for screaming on his MSNBC program: “The Republicans lie! They want to see you dead! They’d rather make money off your dead corpse! They kind of like it when that woman has cancer and they don’t have anything for her.”  Video, scroll down to "winner."

I am stunned

Submitted by Boil It Down on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 2:25am.

This seemingly sincere and heartfelt apology is exactly what I would expect from someone of character and integrity. Has Ed really had and epiphany and achieved a self awareness that I've not seen in him before? Has he had a come to Jesus moment? If so, I wholeheartedly applaud him.

I've been keeping track of Ed ever since he came on MSNBC and the vile, dishonest buffoon I've known him to be isn't the type of character that we see here in this video. I’m afraid his history will not allow me to totally accept that he has changed without earning my respect in the future. I will pray for him to turn his life around.

Unfortunately, Ed's performance in the past makes me cynical, and here is that part. It occurs to me that this blow up with Schultz comes at the same time that they are trying to re-invent Al Sharpton as being statesman like. Is it coincidence? -bidn-

I think yours was the most generous and well thought out response, and I don't in spirit disagree with any of it. That said, he'll be on probation a long time.. seeing how his audience expects that kind of ignorance from him, I'd say, the test will come when his regulars leave for more hateful ground. When his numbers drop, will he remember to be generous of heart then?

We'll see...

But as others have said, his track record causes alot of doubt.

That's okay as far as it goes. Of course, he should have a lot of other apologies to issue to a lot of people and to his viewers on a host of other inappropriate rants, downright lies, and misstatements of facts. He could have a week of apologies and still not cover half of what he needs to apologize for. Perhaps, he should check into a monastery with a vow of silence for, say, a couple of years or so.

Well, as far as apologies go this one may reset the bar for its unremitting self-flagellation, groveling penitence and soul-baring pathos.

It still boggles the mind how someone who "has been in this business since 1978" lacks even the most rudimentary concepts of behavioral boundaries and personal decency--or at least the discipline to adhere to them.

This was public and prime time groveling of epic porportions. In the long run, it may not be enough to save him. I think his days are numbered at MSNBC now as it will not take much after this to justify giving him the boot.

I was stunned too jer - he sounded truly sincere!!!

I assume this is a first for him, correct? So while it doesn't erase his past behavior, this is a new beginning if he really did have an epiphany.

Knowing he was a conservative, he probably just lost his way, as did our gov't,, seduced by the intelligentsia to believe that up is down, etc.

Our Nation is at a tipping point, and the D's have loaded their side of the scales with taxpayer largess to the "poor" to the point where we are almost outstripped by takers. If Ed can realize hurtful words are unacceptable, it is possible others will return to what made our Nation great, and we can heal this rift before we have a 2nd Civil War!

I believe his apology is sincere, and perhaps he overdid it in order to emphasize his sincerity. I hope Ingraham accepts, both publicly and privately to Schultz.  I think getting a civil call from Laura may humble him a bit.

This latest Schultz episode just didn't come out of the blue. Being over the top is Special Ed's trademark, and I assume that is his appeal to his audience. He's crossed the line before, and he'll cross it again. It's his nature and his schtick.

That he has radio and TV shows says something about our public discourse.

just a deep rooted terror about po'ing the boss and losing his best paying ever gig?

No one can truly see into anothers heart, but we can see by his forth coming actions wether it's genuine or not.. I hope it is, even liberals have a right to speak, just not a right to destroy. I think we could all easily tolerate a humbled Schultz, but that is the question...

MSNBC hosts self-immolate

Submitted by ChrisNH on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 6:16am.

Ed Schultz is called 'The Human Torch' for several reasons, but his troubles echo the situation all across the Lilly-white spectrum of hosts at the troubled, far-left cable channel. In late 2008, these Lilly-white hosts--Schultz among them--were fattening themselves with caviar and butter-soaked lobster. The next four years, they knew, would be a Liberal's nirvana. Complete control of Congress and the White House had the Lilly-white hosts orgasmic with happiness.

But quickly it all went wrong. The lie that is Liberalism presented itself when things DIDN'T get better in this country. Unemployment did NOT go down as promised; consumer confidence did NOT go up as promised. More government spending made things worse, not better. Libs declared that HCR was a 'great thing' on one hand while excusing themselves from its reach on the other.

And as the lie of Liberalism came into focus, Leftist media hacks at MSNBC and elsewhere were called onto the carpet to explain themselves. And they couldn't. Or wouldn't.

And now we have these media hacks bursting into flames everywhere you look. Schultz. Paul Krugman. Larry O'Donnell. Everyone else you can name at the NYT. Everywhere you look, you see Livid Libs. The beautiful thing about Lib media hacks is that they cannot shy away from looking in mirrors. They want to see what is being written and said about them, which means they'll come here and read my words.

It does feel good to kick these Lib media hacks in the seeds. I LOVE it!

It's A Start!

Submitted by Bourbeau on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 6:57am.

I have no use for Ed Schulz in any shape, manner, or form. I will give him credit, however, for a sincere apology for the truly despicable comments he made of Laura Ingraham. I often wonder how someone like Ed would feel if those kinds of comments were directed at his wife or one his children.

One would hope that the corporate executives at all cable networks would take notice of what occurred here, and previously with the David Schusters and Don Imuses of the world, and understand they cannot permit unbridled stupidity and vulgarity to reign on the air - it's not right, it's not appropriate, and cannot be tolderated. It's one thing to have an opiinion, and opposing view, and to feel strongly about it. It's a whole other thing to take it down to a personal level and disparage anyone who disagrees with you. Perhaps the likes of Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddows will notice and revisit some of their loose tongue comments and think twise about it.

One more thing - all of whom we mentioned above have parked their tongues at MSNBC for way too many years while the corporate executives winked and nodded. Perhaps Comcast needs to step in here and establish a Corporate Decency Policy for their on-air talent - it seems to be long overdue.

Submitted by motherbelt on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 6:57am.

I'm glad to see my prediction didn't come true, and Schultz actually acted like a grownup.

But the truth is that only someone with a deep-seated disregard for women (or this one woman) allows that word to slide off his tongue so easily.  That's about the worst insult that can be hurled at a woman, and the fact that of all the insulting terms, that's the one  that just popped into his mind, seems to indicate a degree of viciousness that is troubling.

Then again, Ed's rage is such that all of his insults go right to #10 on the dial, so maybe he just lacks any discipline at all.

Just my opinion.

Only in the liberal word of media maniacs, would one such as Special Ed get to "offer" up his own punishment!  Doesn't punishment mean something imposed on you by those who you have hurt?  Where does it say you get to call your own fouls, except in pickup basketball involving the president?

Maybe when Eddie comes back from his self imposed "vacation without pay" he will "offer to take" a raise from MSNBC.  Wouldn't that be the way for a liberal!  Kind of like the IMF rapist getting a bonus and a golden parachute since he had to "resign" for going after the chamber maid.

Submitted by Slyrr on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 9:16am.

He might have been more convincing if he hadn't been smirking and winking at the producer who was standing off-stage while he made his fake 'apology'.

I don't accept his apology, because he didn't mean it. He had been aching to call conservative women 'sluts' (and worse) for years, and his restraint finally gave way. He gave us a glimpse into the rotten, fetid, putrid filth that lurks behind the mask of everyone in the Democrat media.

And when he gets back from his free 1-week vacation, he'll be right back at it.

MSNBC are nothing but a pack of chimpanzees, running around their desks, throwing leaves in the air and flinging their poo at the cameras.

Mark my words - it won't be long before they are making direct and blatent calls for violence against conservatives and republicans. They may not fire any guns themselves. But they'll definitely hold the coats of the people who start shooting at GOP members and say 'they had it coming'.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

He's not sorry he called her

Submitted by marpel on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 9:31am.

He's not sorry he called her a slut. He's sorry for getting suspended by MSNBC over something he said on his radio show. He's sorry he didn't get away with it. Don't worry, some other POS will come rolling out of this fat gas bag's mouth soon enough.

Shultz is ike many criminals who are nabbed by law enforcement...they're aren't really sorry for the crimes they committed, they are simply sorry they got caught. Given his miserable track record over the years, it is unlikely he has had a true change of heart. What is a more likely scenario is that PMSNBC gave him an ultimatum - either apologize or go stand in the bread line.

Ed's Apology Is Not Sincere:

Submitted by Comrade Jim on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 9:51am.

He apologized AFTER he was caught and called out for his comments. His apology was damage control pure and simple.

Schultz is another one of those lefties who work on the edge of damaging the left wing cause more than they help it. His apology is walking back a bit from the edge.

Well, I guess that he is very flustered at this point, himself and his vile minions on MSNBC are not gaining as much ground as they thought to promote Imam Obama because the people are seeing what he really has done to this country and after 2.5 yrs thing are worse than they were when he gained office in 2009. So, the breakdown has began who is next, Madcow Maddow? we can only hope.

Pardon me for being cynical

Submitted by Beukeboom on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 10:04am.

Pardon me for being cynical but based on Schultz' past behaviors I doubt the sincerity of his "apology" and I suspect the "apology" was written for him by MSNBC brass to read on-air and he did so just to save his job.

Once his vacation...er...suspension is done, he'll slowly creep back into his old ways.

I'm kind of ashamed to bring the name up but Dr. Phil McGraw has a saying that proved true more often than not, "The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior."

Remember, Ed "Short Bus" Schultz has a long, documented (thanks NB & Radio Equalizer) history of making abusive, vitriolic statements and he's just not going to go "cold turkey."

My question for everyone to ponder is this: just how many more of these incidents will have to occur before he is off-the-air permanently both on radio and television?

I have had more than my share of histrionic patients, all of whom go for the Oscar for everything from stubbing a toe to shoving a knife into a victim's appendage. Ed's performance ranks right up among the more unbelievable ones. As others have pointed out, he is sorry he got caught--not sorry he said what he said. He believes in what he said, but once called out on the carpet is dialing up the emotional quotient to the point of distraction from his own horrible behavior.

After 30 years of psychiatric practice, I certainly have seen more convincing apologies--from catatonic patients.

The "not competent" ruling in Loughner is tricky.

Submitted by drsamherman on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 7:10pm.

Any time this type of ruling is made, it is subject to continual actions back and forth to force re-evaluation of mental health periodically. That process can continue for months or years. This is a difficult balancing act. Depending on the mental health laws of whatever jurisdiction may charge him for his crimes, he may never be tried at all and would spend the remainder of his life in a mental institution. True sociopath schizophrenics are incredibly clever at manipulating the system to the extent that he could be ruled competent to stand trial and then suddenly "take a turn for the worse" causing a mistrial. I have seen it happen in more than a few cases, none of which had the notoriety of this one.

The incompetency ruling by the judge saves some face for the government in the short term to the extent that ultimately a more complete mental health profile can be completed. At the same time, it now sends the defense into overdrive with competing psychiatric evaluations from different expert witnesses.

I wish the psychiatric evaluations used by the judge to make this ruling were available. That would provide more insight into the differentials used for diagnosis.

He does grovel well though..... sorry I won't watch the tape, I hate to see people humilate themselves, even people I really dislike intensely. There's something, I don't know,... maybe,... tragically sad,..... to see a human so debased..

I trained as a soldier,.. but I never in my worst days, ever enjoyed anyone's suffering, no matter how well deserved. I would do what was to be done, and think ill of no one for enjoying his come uppence... he did deserve it,.. I just can't myself, find pleasure in it... seen too much I guess.. a little too much empathy,.. a weakness of mine.

I feel sorry for him now.

even though if anyone ever did deserve this, he did.

sorry for being so cynical but i really don't buy it. after hearing his "heartfelt" apology and seeing his broadcasted offense, you'd think he'd feel some remorse the instant that cussword left his mouth. instead he repeated it. he's only apologizing because he got chewed out and had his @$$ spanked. he even threw around the idea of running for office. this leftist isn't doing this because he feels "bad". he's doing it because he got in trouble, wants to keep his job and wants to "save face" for some future political plans.

Ed Schultz' Apology

Submitted by Penfire on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 2:23pm.

It seemed quite sincere so if I were Laura, I would certainly forgive him.

It is very hard, though, to forgive the way the debate from the Democrat side of the issue that was being discussed, Sen. Ryan's Congressional Bill on the Budget. It is not being honestly reported by MSNBC or any of the other major networkd news shows.

I would be so happy, thrilled, if our country's news media could go back to the way it used to be, at least I thought it was, real, thorough and honest news reporting. I hate it when the news is slanted either way and we the people have to dig out the truth. Honesty will always be the best policy whether the news media are or not...I pray they will make it their policy, too.

I sincerely think Mr. Schultz apology should be accepted by all. Speech should be free but I think it is up to all American citizens regardless of political affliation to control their own speech. Isn't there something we can all agree on to guard our tongues in public and on the air without making laws that abridge our Constitutional right to free speech? I think there is. Please, let us get back to civility without discouraging debate, even critical and zealous, BUT honest debate.

Redundant

Submitted by djm159 on Thu, 05/26/2011 - 2:34pm.

It is kind of redundant isn't it to say MSNBC is capable of being embarrassed. That is akin to embarrassing Bill Clinton - it can't be done. They have no morals, no justice and certainly no sense of right or wrong, not to mention fair play. How else do you explain Keith Olberman, Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow. These people are vile, vicious, foul mouthed liars who are proven wrong on nearly everything they say and lack the sense God gave a goose. They lambasted George Bush, Dick Cheney, Dick Cheney's daughter, Laura Bush, the Bush twins, Donald Rumsfeld and referred to the brilliant Condi Rice as "Aunt Jemima." It is kind of ironic that now they suspend Fat-boy Schultz for doing what he has always done, and what every other broadcaster on that low-ratings network has done. They hold Obama, the Marxist in Chief, up to be a paragon of everything good, when in reality he is evil incarnate. They praise Obamacare and herald the Obama lie that there will be no death panels made up of bureaucrats to determine who lives and who dies, while all the time the death panels are being put into place as we speak. Now people are concerned about name calling? Get real, this group of low-life vermin should be forever banned from broadcasting, not just Fat-Boy Schultz. Why doesn't MSNBC remove broadcasters for deliberate misinformation and lies - they cannot really do that, otherwise they would have to go off the air because they would have no one left to broadcast for them. This also applies to ABC. NBC, CBS and CNN.

I watched Ed's apology and while it appears sincere I have a nagging feeling the only reason he offered it was because the Comcast folks came down on MSNBC and said make it go away. I have to question like others, since when does the offender get to choose the punishment?

I smell a con job.
