Incoming CBS Anchor Pelley Mimics MSNBC’s Pledge: ‘We’re Going to Be Leaning Forward’

Scott Pelley, the incoming anchor for the CBS Evening News, dropped by Washington, DC’s CBS affiliate on Wednesday where he mimicked left-wing MSNBC’s “Lean Forward” slogan as he promised: “We’re going to be leaning forward.”

On DCRTV.com I saw a link to online video of a WUSA-TV story about Pelley’s May 4 visit to the Gannett-owned station where he pledged: “We're going to cover hard news. We're going to be aggressive about that. We're going to be leaning forward.”

Very unlike MSNBC, however, he pledged fairness: “Were going to be all about original reporting, unique insight and being fair to everybody involved in a story. It is just that simple.” (Audio: MP3 clip)

Check out the MRC’s Profile in Bias on Pelley collated by Geoffrey Dickens: “Pelley's Liberal Path to the Anchor Chair.”

Pelley’s description of what his post-Katie Couric newscast will provide starting on June 6, as aired in the WUSA-TV story:

We’re going to cover hard news. We’re going to be aggressive about that. We’re going to be leaning forward. We’re going to take the broadcast on the road when we can add some reporting to what’s going on in the world. And the broadcast is going to be about hard news from beginning to end. The folks at home are telling us that that’s what they want to see.

Were going to be all about original reporting, unique insight and being fair to everybody involved in a story. It is just that simple.

An amazing pledge

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Fri, 05/06/2011 - 7:27am.

1. Original reporting - As opposed to what, plagiarizing?

2. Unique insight - I would have preferred "Accurate Insight" Unique implies that they will have some sort of angle on the news that no one else has.  Is that reporting, or commentating?

3. Fair to everybody - We're not going to lie or slant about the news?

The fact that a "major" network has to pledge not to plagiarize and not to lie or slant the news is an amazing admission as to what Pelley believes is the current state of their news coverage, or at the very least, the perception of the news coverage provided by CBS.

I would actually enjoy a 30 minute "hard news" show that covered the important news of the nation and the world.  You'd think it would be easy to get some new viewers.

Find another catch phrase.
Lean forward and fall flat on your face.
Lean forward and you'll fall from the railing.
If you lean forward ,you may tumble down the cliff.
Lean forward and put your hands against the wall, you are about to be frisked by the lefties once again.

all over the leftie news front. Makes me wonder which media consultant came up with it. I'm sure somebody got paid big to realize that when people are actively engaged in a conversation, they lean forward in their seat, whereas if they don't care or are indifferent or condescending, they lean back. Therefore, the advice is to "lean forward" and make it SEEM like you're interested, engaged, and involved, even though you're just selling a bag of BS.

So, to me, any talking head who claims to be leaning forward is simply telling me that he's selling a bag of BS.  And he knows it.

Pelley is a flaming Marxist, more so than the robot he is replacing, and his network basically sucks.

Nothing is going to change other than the mindless Obamabot sitting at the anchor desk, puking out whatever pro-Marxist BS propaganda the equally mindless intern news writers give them.

Poor old ABC now that the Lean Forward slogan has been taken by CBS and MSNBC. What to do? What to do?

Ahah!! New ABC slogan: "Leaning sort of ahead, spinning on one foot, while propping up Jay what's his name the White House spokesnut, and never never having to say we are sorry because we don't do that. We're professionals."

Perhaps a bit wordy. We'll have the elves in the White House work on it for us.

Pelley biased

Submitted by Ben Blankenship on Fri, 05/06/2011 - 10:25am.

Pelley is one of the most distasteful newsmen I have ever seen on TV. I base that observation on a 60 Minute segment he did back in 2007. He grilled Frank Wuterich, a combat Marine in the Iraq war, unmercifully for his role in a firefight at a place called Haditha. It was an utterly disgusting antiwar rant by Pelley. Forget him. I had thought Glen Beck was bad. Pelley is worse.

60 Minutes

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Fri, 05/06/2011 - 5:43pm.

When 60 Minutes first came out, (back in my hippy/liberal college days), I thought it was a great show.  Grill the fat-cat corporate guys or do an undercover sting to right some wrong.  Years later I came to understand their editing tactics and how they could make just about anybody look bad.  I came to the conclusion that anybody who had any knowledge of this program would have to be an idiot to agree to appear on 60 minutes.  The premise of 60 minutes was as big a false-hood as any that they claimed to have unmasked.

Plus I never really liked their segments on the New York, upper-crust,  artsy-fartsy liberal crowd.  I stopped watching and never looked back.

Who?

Submitted by HardRightTurn on Fri, 05/06/2011 - 12:18pm.

I have no idea who this guy Scott Pelley is. The only reason I know who Catie Couric is is because she became the news. I guess I'll have to wait for Mr. Pelley to do something to make the news, because I have not watched CBS since Dan Rather's first lie about Afgan film from the Russian war there.

For over two centuries,

Submitted by stratman on Fri, 05/06/2011 - 2:08pm.

For over two centuries, Americans desired to stand straight and tall.  Leaning forward sounds like they're crooked and can't stand straight.

The Media  prefers to roll over for tummy rubs from Barry.  Good doggies.  Bark!

Pelley was hired because he will do what his masters tell him to do, and he will do it gladly.  He is what he is - one of the faithful Left.  There is no ideological or professional ethic change at CBS.  There has been no wholesale management or employee replacement that would lead one to conclude a change in policy or procedure.  Pelley reads a teleprompter, not write or run the newsroom.  Any flashes of actual journalistic neutrality will be fleeting and unrepresentative of the whole.

Observation - people lean forward when they go to the bathroom.  Same result with the Left's "Lean Forward" message.

Submitted by PrairieSky on Fri, 05/06/2011 - 2:17pm.

"Leaning forward" is MSNBC's idiotic tagline, not CBS'. Does this numbskull know who he works for?

CBS is really tilting at windmills if they believe that Pelley is going to improve their ratings...Most people have no idea who he is. As bad as Couric was, most folks were at least aware of who she was when she got the anchor job.

HEY! GREAT IDEA FOR A NEW SPORT.......

Submitted by Herbster on Fri, 05/06/2011 - 4:33pm.

Pelley and Brian Williams could go to the White House together and have a "Bow off." They could put a cutout of the Demander in Chief in front of them. They'd face the cutout and be given two minutes to bow. Judging would be on depth of bow, speed and number of bows and, oh yes, the cutout would be backwards and each contestant would have to bow deeply enough to stick his nose in a bowl of brown paint. Scoring would be, three points for the brownest nose, two points for deepest bows and one point for speed and number of bows. In case of a tie, there would be a one minute overtime period with Barney Frank judging from behind.

Lissen up!

Submitted by CO2Maker on Fri, 05/06/2011 - 6:06pm.

This is the third or fourth time I've explained what "lean forward" refers to.

When you have to pass gas, when you cannot avoid it, and you're sitting down in company—at church, at a restaurant, in a meeting, or on the air behind the Big Anchor desk—you lean forward and squeeze it out silently.

That's what MSNBC is doing when it "leans forward." Just watch Chris the Wide Mouth Frog, Rachel-Ron, and Keith the Sports Boy (back when he was on a channel that someone might watch). Leanin' forward ... aaahhhh.
