Video: Opening Segment from Hannity’s 'Behind the Bias: The History of Liberal Media'

On Friday night, the Fox News Channel debuted a Hannity special, ‘Behind the Bias: The History of Liberal Media.’ The promo declared: “Double standards? Groundless attacks? Blatant bias? Sean calls out the mainstream media! Don’t miss Behind the Bias: The History of Liberal Media.”

The Media Research Center made available to Fox News Channel producers video clips from our archive going back more than 20 years and they are scattered throughout the hour – as are soundbites from MRC President Brent Bozell.

The hour began with what Sean Hannity described as “how and why this bias began,” illustrated with several classic examples of left-wing journalistic advocacy and/or denigration of conservatives. Watch the segment, about seven minutes in length, after the jump:

The Hannity show page on FoxNews.com has video of all the segments from the April 22 program.

Even a liberal, like Juan

Juan Williams is no dummy

Submitted by richb313 on Sat, 04/23/2011 - 6:39am.

Brit Hume had chosen Juan Williams because he is no dummy. He wanted articulate, smart and forcefull advocates for thier positions on his panel. So Jaun became one of the regular contibuters on Fox news. At first, it was put up with because the establisment types thought it was cool to have a warrior from thier camp do battle at the evil network. A funny thing happened, Juan listened. He did not moderate his positions that much but he could see by actually debating that conservatives could be smart too. Fast forward a few years and Juan was substituting for occasional hosts and even Bill O'Rielly. Then Juan jumped the liberal shark tank, spoke what was on his mind and got thrown under the liberal bus by breaking orthodoxy.

Today Juan is having to re-think about everything he thought he knew. He still wants to accomplish most things liberals want such as Universal Health Care but is much more willing to consider other ideas. He also saw who came to his defense and who did not. It is hard not to be bitter, and Juan is bitter, after having been treated the way he was by his intellectual allies.

first off i thought it was a great show. for some reason the one thing that stuck out for me was when juan williams mentioned one word, integrity. and that's what has happened to the lame stream media, they have lost their integrity. i have also noticed that in the past the media tried to hide their leftist nature. now? they are blatent about it and don't give a rat's rear if you notice or not.

Submitted by GeneralAl on Sat, 04/23/2011 - 6:50am.

The real idiots are the voters who swallow hook, line and sinker the propaganda spewed out across the land on a daily basis by these lying, Liberal thugs! The sad part is, their voting causes those of us who know better, to pay a severe price for their stupidity!

It was a pretty good show, but nothing shockingly new......

Submitted by merly1 on Sat, 04/23/2011 - 9:20am.

It is amazing to again see liberal leader's bloopers just accepted as normal, whereas the typical rightie blooper attacked and rehashed to no end. Owebama's 57 states or Biden's Jesus-like "stand up" to the wheelchair guy is an amazing contrast to how people like Palin, Bachmann, or Lott blooper's are attacked and endlessly recycled. And again, not to beat a proverbial dead horse, but as a public speaker I am totally UNIMPRESSED with Owebama's extemporaneous efforts = an ode to" hemms, uhhhs, let me make this perfectly clear," etc. He is no better than W, and I think perhaps even a little worse............am I wrong? Yet, the media unendingly heralds his speaking skills???

I think most of us here found that there was nothing "shockingly new" because, thanks to NB, we have been keeping abreast of liberal bias for a long time.

The media, whether they realize it or not, are simply praising his reading skills and dramatic flair.

You can tell when he's speaking off the cuff: that's when his petulance shows.

Yes, exactly! He also gets quite mean-spirited at times when he is winging it.
I do agree that NB is a fabulous resource for media bias. I liked the older software better, but the threads are often excellent, and survey areas I could never stand to watch (ie MSNBC, Maher)

I first noticed the bias when I was 10...

Submitted by beauxdog on Sat, 04/23/2011 - 9:38am.

I am in my early 50s now.

1968 and the Vietnam War was in full swing. Every night, the nightly news displayed a scorecard of casualties... EVERY night. I came to full realization one night when the story was questioning the casualties. I am 10 years old and I understand that... IT IS A WAR. People die in wars. Why don't these people get that? This is also when I started talking to the TV and later the computer.

I also grew up thinking I was a liberal because I believed in odd things like... equal pay for equal work, discrimination was bad, racism was bad and that people should have equal opportunities... a level playing field. In college I realized I was a hard core conservative and that the MSM had spent years trying to convince me otherwise.

These people have been at it a long time. It would be great if the long awaited revolution was one of ideas that put them out to pasture.

Do you remember when the light bulb went off and you realized these people were lying through their teeth? I would love to hear your story.

Submitted by Riled on Sat, 04/23/2011 - 10:28am.

My story is much like yours.

Next year I will be fifty. In my uninformed youth I considered myself a liberal. I have come to realize that years in the public school system had resulted in my change in convictions that my parents tried to instill. I remember the shocked expression on my mother’s face when her children would make liberal declarations. Today, I fully understand what she must have felt.

The many years of unashamed twisting of facts fed by the public school system coupled with the immaturity of youth, and acceptance of those things taught by our great school system as prima fascia, caused me to go astray. Not until co-workers challenged my views, and I started my own studying, did I realize that things were quite different than I was lead to believe on many different subjects; and even more so in the last five years. I dig for the truth as best that any of us can. With job, family, and faith, there is still a limited amount of time to devote to sifting through the information.
Thank God for the internet (that’s God not Gore). Even though half or more out there is hardly fact or truth, with an open mind and a logical approach, tempered by reason, one can find the truth.

Where does that ultimately lead?
Conservatism.
Call me ultra conservative.

I agree with Ann Coulter’s assertion: Born Liberal; Grow up conservative.

I remember being told the

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Sat, 04/23/2011 - 6:01pm.

I remember being told the "Democrats are for regular people and Republicans are for the rich" line. I wonder how many are waking up to the idea that $4 gas is NOT helping the poor?

I remember reading a newspaper as a teenager and reading about a town that was coming down on a homeowner because they had a pet pot bellied pig. The town classified the pig as a farm animal because it was a pig, and since their property was not zoned for farming they were not allowed to keep it. This was obviously a pet, was well-cared for, and no more disruptive to the neighbors than a dog, but it had to go. This stood out in my mind as a complete abuse of government power and it still does.

I always had a strong respect for property rights, and whatever logic in my brain decided to support that also naturally flows to a Libertarian/Conservative view into other areas, but I would assume the default Leftwing position on an issue until logic and reason told me otherwise.

The inherent good I was told that filled leftwing positions really confused me. For example, when it came to the environment I found so many things that just didn't make sense and when I'd ask someone to clarify I found the answers lacking. I never questioned the integrity of the environmental movement because it was "good" so I knew these caring people couldn't possibly be lying. I figured the inconsistencies were simply the result of people caring too much and possibly blowing things a little out of proportion. Gradually (and I don't know when) I finally evolved to the point where I thought these people were nutty morons to the opinion that I have now which is that they are blatant propagandists who abuse the public's trust by scaring them into supporting draconian restrictions on their lifestyle that they never would have supported otherwise.

The problem I have with the

Submitted by redfish on Sat, 04/23/2011 - 11:58am.

The problem I have with the conservative take on media bias is that they blame it on the media's attempt to be objective, and so want to throw out the concept of an objective media as a fantasy.

But even though the liberal media put on a pose of objectivity, they never really believed in it. Journalists graduated from universities that promoted a postmodern idea about truth -- that everything is subjective -- that any claim to universal, objective truth is a tool of the establishment -- and journalism should be about advocacy and moving a liberal agenda forward. Appearing objective was just a matter of appearing authoritative.

Conservatives today, instead of arguing for a true objective media, agree with the postmodern liberal assessment and say all media is essentially biased and subjective. They defend biased, politically driven terms like "homicide bomber" that they argue reflect the truth more.

The media was definitely biased left, but this clip on Hannity makes a lot of things that are not biased, but objective, and refers to them as biased, and it looks ridiculous. A lot of Russians -- in fact -- were fretting about the instability that resulted from the fall of the Soviet Union. That's why eventually Putin was put into office and so many Russians support him, because under Putin Russia is a more stable country.

Hannity is completely blowing his case. There are much more clear, honest examples he could have used to show his point.

For you guys up above who outlined your history with liberal bias-been there, been thru that. Im about the same age, went thru the same Vietnam War/Watergate/Carter years crap, and it was amazing how the lib media tried to do to me what they, unfortunately, accomplished with millions of sheeple. Youd think the Reagan years would have awoken everyone from their somambulistic slumber, but nope,,there are some that will still follow like lemmings off the cliffs.

Hannity's show on bias - excellent

An excellent effort. The MRC's help here was obviously well done. One of the best bias pieces on the tube that I think we've seen.

One can only hope that this entire episode be made available thru EyeBlast, or on YouTube - as it is one that can, and should, be shared with the millions who did not see it.

Great job to all involved.

Submitted by krendler on Sat, 04/23/2011 - 1:32pm.

I hope at some point in this series they highlight and contrast the interviews done by Katie Couric with Sarah Palin and Joe Biden during the 08 campaign. Night and day between the questions asked and the tone. It was clear Couric despised Palin (grimacing, squinting and making strange faces with every answer given by Palin) while she was all smiles, giggling and practically playing footsie with Biden (nauseating to watch).

Not only are the Liberals biased, but their slavish devotion to Obama is unreal. Did you know that at an Obama fundraiser this week they had a children's chorus sing "I want to shine like Barack Obama shines"?

i just finished watching it. It was well produced. He was preaching to the choir. I bet very few libs watched it. Secondly I think most of us knew of all the things Hannity talked about. There were no new revelations. I can just see the fools over at MESSNBC already pulling snippets out of this and out of context to rail about next week.

I have to thank the staff at MRC and NB for keeping us abreast of the liberal bias. I like to think we are some of the best informed of the electorate.

May I recomend an hour long special which focuses on the violent rhetoric of leftist leaders and Democrat politicians and the uncivil, violent and unruly leftist mobs which have sprung up since Obama became President.

There's no lack of material out there. Obama can easily be tied in to the mob violence and intimidation by his associations and his own violent rhetoric, which Jim Hoft has chronicled.

Over the event horizon bias

Submitted by deadeyedan on Sat, 04/23/2011 - 9:02pm.

Another couple of hours (months?) could be spent on the MSM's contempt for America, and it was interesting that Mr. Hannity did not even spend any time covering the gross miscarriage of media slant in the climate debate despite ClimateGate and plenty of snowstorms. What a snowjob they've been doing there.

ClimateGate - the revelation that the pseudo-scientists of East Anglia University know as much about the atmosphere as Harvard law professors know about the Constitution - deadeyedan
