Obama a 'Figure of Hope' to World in Winning 'One of the Last Towering Honors on Earth'

ABC, CBS and NBC all led Friday night with the “surprise” pick of President Barack Obama for the Nobel Peace Prize after less than a year in office and acknowledged the choice was meant as a slap at former President George W. Bush, but that didn't prevent the network journalists from touting the honor of the selection and, in one case, worrying about how critics will use the award against him.

“He has been in office nine months,” ABC anchor Charles Gibson observed as ABC plastered glowing praise on screen: “The Nobel committee citation seemed to take note of that, saying, 'only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope.'” Katie Couric exclaimed: “Talk about an October surprise!”

Despite the obvious politicization of the award, NBC's Brian Williams championed how it's “one of the last remaining towering honors on Earth.” Williams also fretted over how Obama's advisers will deal with “knowing that critics of the White House will use this, oddly, as a tool against him.” On CBS, Jeff Greenfield saw vindication for Obama after losing the Olympic bid:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Think back all the way to last week when the Olympic bid failed and the President's critics said “you see, for all the talk he doesn't have that kind of international clout.” So if this is a prize for good intentions -- which sounds right -- it does suggest that at least some folks abroad think that Obama is a figure of hope. You couple that with a poll a couple months ago that showed that in almost every country there's a much more favorable impression of the United States than there was two years ago...it is a reaction to the last President -- and that's some kind of capital. Let me put it this way, you know, like chicken soup, couldn't hurt.

Only the CBS Evening News, however, pointed out the past liberal tilt of the Nobel committee as Chip Reid noted: “Former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson says it's all about politics, how else to explain that Republican Ronald Reagan helped end the Cold War but never won the peace prize, while three leading Democrats have won in just the past seven years.” Those three: Jimmy Carter, Al Gore and now Obama.

A flavor of the Friday night, October 9 coverage:

> ABC's World News:

Charles Gibson's tease:

Tonight, prize surprise. President Obama receives the Nobel Peace Prize. He accepts it as a call to action on a range of world issues.

Gibson led:

Good evening. It is hard to overstate the near universal surprise at today's award of the Nobel peace prize to President Obama. Even the audience gathered in Oslo for the announcement was stunned. He has been in office nine months. The Nobel committee citation seemed to take note of that, saying, “only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope.” The President himself was surprised, he didn't know he'd even been nominated.

> CBS Evening News:

Katie Couric's tease:

The President wakes up to the surprising news that he's won the Nobel Peace Prize....But the choice is controversial. Some asking what has the President done to deserve it?

Couric began:

Good evening, everyone. When an aide feels he needs to wake a President with breaking news it's usually bad, but not today. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs phones President Obama at 6 AM with the good but very unexpected news that he was chosen to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. No one saw it coming. The announcement in Oslo in Norwegian drew gasps from the audience.

Named for Alfred Nobel, the prize is awarded to the person who “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations.” The President was cited for quote, “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” The Nobel committee suggested it appreciated the change in tone in U.S. policy, but even the White House was hard pressed to explain the choice which comes as the President is managing two wars. Chip Reid is at the White House tonight and, Chip, talk about an October surprise!

....

Jeff Greenfield:

Think back all the way to last week when the Olympic bid failed and the President's critics said “you see, for all the talk he doesn't have that kind of international clout.” So if this is a prize for good intentions -- which sounds right -- it does suggest that at least some folks abroad think that Obama is a figure of hope. You couple that with a poll a couple months ago that showed that in almost every country there's a much more favorable impression of the United States than there was two years ago -- and I agree with Bob [Schieffer], it is a reaction to the last President-- and that's some kind of capital. Let me put it this way, you know, like chicken soup, couldn't hurt.

> NBC Nightly News:

Tease from Brian Williams:

On the broadcast tonight: A surprise prize for the President. The Nobel Peace Prize. Out of nowhere and now the reaction.

Williams opened:

Good evening. The President was awakened at 6 AM and told he had just won the Nobel Peace Prize. It was a stunner. It came out of nowhere. It is not the kind of thing he had applied for, nor did he know he was nominated. One White House staffer said he had to make sure this wasn't April 1st. A writer for Time magazine calls it the last thing the President needs. It happened so fast and was so unexpected the White House had to figure out what to say. It's also one of the last remaining towering honors on Earth.
....

WILLIAMS: And David, what now about treading lightly for the Obama administration? Again, we can't say this enough. They woke up this morning and were handed this and now have to handle it, except he's going to give the money to charity. And knowing that critics of the White House will use this, oddly, as a tool against him.

DAVID GREGORY: Can he live up to the expectations? That's the question. And let's point out the irony. He gets the Nobel Peace Prize just as he's trying to decide how to win the war in Afghanistan. He is the commander in chief of two wars. Wars have a way of gobbling up presidencies, even if you're seen as a peace crusader.

The Nobel Peace Prize has been reduced to the same level as a grammy.

I think that in the very

I think that in the very near future we will find out that the White
House and other adminstration officials were behind this peace prize
BS.  So don't be surprised when it comes out.  These people calculate
everything, all the way down to when and where Obama has a bowel
movement.

  Just out of curiousity I

Just out of curiousity I asked my neighbor lady, who is very non-political and has very few hard held opinions about any particular politician, what she thought of obama getting the Peace Prize.  She just rolled her eyes.  Even she knew its a sham award.

Yep.  Regular folks

Yep.  Regular folks understand perfectly well when you name a freshman as valedictorian. It's obviously stupid.

Sorry, Jeff -- while some abroad may see Obama as 'a figure of hope', far more of use back home understand that he's 'a figurehead dope'...

Yep, heard someone in my

Yep, heard someone in my office today, as I think she was just checking the news at lunch, say from her office, "Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize.....I'm not sure I understand that."  Didn't say it in any way anti-anything, just didn't understand how.  I think any logical minded person, who isn't political and, like your neighbor, doesn't have any hard opinions, would say the same thing, because let's face it, it really doesn't make any sense.  It was given to him for what he says he'll do.  I didn't think that award's purpose was to be given to someone who says they'll do something, but instead only to those who have done something, whether they said would or not.

Marc Lamont Hill was on O'Reilly tonight, and gave a very sensible opinion on why it was ridiculous that Obama got the prize.  I was surprised.

Greg.... I saw that

Greg....

I saw that segment as well...I, like you, was very surprised with his response.

I saw it as well and was as surprised as you both!!

Facts are like kryptonite to the liberal.

I rarely agree with Hill (I

I rarely agree with Hill (I did on this one), but aside from that, I'll say that I normally like the back and forth he and O'Reilly do, or he and another guest.  As much as I can remember, he doesn't present himself as one of the liberals that just act like idiots.  Disagree, yes of course, but there's a difference in how some of them act.

First time ever

that I have agreed with Lamont Hill, and I agreed with both his points tonight - just goes to show how screwed up all of this has become.

Whoever

are the folks that determine who gets the prize. The "committee" or whatever apparently drank Obama's kool-ade and is just kissing his A$$ combined with a swipe at whatever is left of the Bush era policies. In other words it is a wishful welcome and invitation to the socialist Euro-weenie world.

Yeah, some of Uhbama's peace buddies took care of a couple of those in the New York skyline a few years back.

All I can say is, the bigger they are, the harder they fall.  At the rate the Uhbama myth is growing, he's gonna be in for one whale of a fall. We can only hope the American public learns a long-lasting lesson when it happens.

Honor????   WTH???

The Nobel Peace Prize has become a positive JOKE!

The Nobel committee citation:  “only

So now the prize is given for charisma.

So it's basically "Best Actor" with a cash prize.

I heard on one newscast or another that the Nobel committee gave the award to carter as a kick in the shins to Bush because Bush was in office at the time.

When you think about it, you have 5 Norwegian Socialists giving a prize to the one Socialist in this country that swears up and down that he isn't a Socialist.  Well this pretty much proves us right.  Wasn't one of the reason stated by the IOC why Chicago didn't get the Olympics was because they didn't think they could give the games to a country that was currently at war when the games stand for peace?  Yeah, right.  Someone should have informed the Nobel morons.

Accomplish something at least

I thought you actually had to DO something to get the Nobel.  It is really laughable when you think that the nomination had to be received in FEBRUARY - only 2 weeks after he took office.  Now he didn't even talk about nuclear disarmament back then, and hadn't even doen the apology tours, but that is why they say he gets the award?  This shames the award worse the Al Gore's "consolation prize".  What a joke...

Empty-headed liberals

As Rush always says: It's symbolism over substance.

They are frauds.

pink breast cancer ribbons replacing ACORN red

Yeah, we can hope but the Marxists are deeply imbedded in our government and have been since at least the '20s, and then FDR and Stalin really did a lot of damage in that regard in the '30s and '40s. Democrats have long, deep connections with the monsters of the 1930s, including people like  Henry Ford (a real anti-Semite) who did more business with Joseph Stalin than anyone in the world at the time. That's why Ford is being handed the automotive industry today by the Obama administration.

As to ACORN, it seems that the pink "breast cancer" ribbons are replacing ACORN red. That's just another scam but one harder to criticize.

ACORN or not...it's the

ACORN or not...it's the gerry-meandering I'm worried about with the new Census. ...whole reason they wanted ACORN to be involved in the first place (plus over 360 sister groups with ACORN)..but there are ways around this anyway...the dems know all the ropes...the tricks of the trade come easy to them....plus, we can't forget the trial lawyer threat...which they very well mean...as the msm spews for them 24/7.

We should've known better. When the democRATS started hollering that 'Bush stole the election' in 2000, that was an indication of what was in store for the future.

The statutes of the Nobel Foundation restrict disclosure of information about the nominations, whether publicly or privately, for 50 years. The restriction concerns the nominees and nominators, as well as investigations and opinions related to the award of a prize.

But that doesn't mean I will refrain from pointing out the hypocrisy, sham, and injustice of the Nobel committee for their utter loss of backbone, objectivity and moral authority, in denying the good Pope human recognition as a true pillar of peace and untiring advocate for the poor.

So, The Nobel committee exclaims that Hussein has given the ''world's people Hope''?  What about the damage he has done to his own country's economy?  What is he trying to do to his own country's freedoms?  What has been planning for his own country's people?  How about the military that are dying in Afghanistan for the sake of his own selfish and personal political goals?

Here's what I ''Hope'' - I Hope he go bye-bye real soon.  It will take years to flush out all of his people and appointed bums.

I am just wondering

What it is we are being distracted from at the moment?

There must be something that while we are looking at this Nobel Prize issue. Something far more important and deserving of our attention is being pulled over our eyes.

I am wondering, this is a Media slight of hand move and we are being deceived on something we are not paying attention too.

Here's a fact that's worth the knowing, So treasure and mark it well.  When the mind is through with growing, the the head begins to swell.             Sir Nosmo King

Don't worry, a good many Europeans think it's a joke too.

In a highly surprising move yesterday, the Nobel organisation awarded the Peace Prize to United States President Barack Obama, who stated that he was humbled by the award and would gratefully accept it. Commenting in this decision, United States Talk Radio host Rush Limbaugh stated that the Nobel Organisation had just suicide bombed themselves over the award, as the Organisation has awarded prizes to Al Gore, and Jimmy Carter, but no prize was offered to Ronald Reagan, who liberated hundreds of millions of Europeans from the yoke of communism. Others have voiced the opinion that making this sort of award so early in the Obama presidency is a considerable mistake, and others have greeted the announcement of the award to the United States President with shock and incredulity, whilst an online poll in one Spanish newspaper found that 63% disagreed with the award going to a politician, suggesting that the best of the 205 candidates for the award was Ingrid Betancourt.

One political commentator - Pablo Molina of the Juan de Mariana Institute - suggested that since Mr Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Nobel Committee ought to give the Economics Prize to Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero (Spanish prime minister) for spending the entire assets of a once-prosperous country on absurd measures aimed at ignoring the financial downturn. In China, dissidents are voicing unease about the Prize being handed to Mr Obama, and expressing the view that the award could have been effective in promoting human rights in the country, such as the plight of Hu Jia - another candidate - who has been locked up since 2007 after he exposed government abuses and the plight of AIDS sufferers in China.

How did they make their decision?

I was trying to figure out how Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. With Obama’s considerable accomplishments, I was interested in comparing them to the accomplishments of the other nominees. Well in short there is not a full nominee list for the prize that will be made public until 2050’s. But once a nominee is accepted they often will add that to their accomplishments which it should be. This is a partial list of nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Piedad Esneda Córdoba Ruiz – Committed treason far way leftist from Columbia now she is helping Chavez.

Sima Samar – Dr. in Afghanistan fighting for women’s rights in the Middle East. Her life is in constant danger as she tries to get women basic civil rights.

Hu Jia – Jailed Chinese dissident, for pushing Democracy, Environmental Action and AIDs awareness.

Ingrid Betancourt – Columbian anti corruption activist, spent 6 years as a prisoner of FARC. She was taken while campaigning for the Columbian Presidency. Huge anti drug voice in Columbia.

Cluster Munitions Coalition – Successfully got over 90 countries to agree to a ban on cluster weapons.

Zivko Popovski-Cvetin – Artist & Humanitarian, he creates and donates paintings with a floral motive for over 30 years.

SOS Kinderdorf International – aka SOS Children’s Villages. Built safe orphanages and schools in 132 countries.

Greg Mortenson – A mountaineer turned philanthropist. He builds schools in the Himalayan mountain range from Pakistan to Nepal. He educates men and women in these schools and has survived many attacks on his person. He has built over 130 schools.

Thick Quang Do – A Vietnamese Buddhist Monk who is the leader of the now banned Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam. He has been held under house arrest for over 19 years.

Pete Seeger – Singer Activist. This guys has been singing against war since the Spanish Civil War in 1943. He is now in his 90’s and continues singing against war.

I look at this list and there are a couple people who I’m not sure should even be on the list. The singer, the painter, the treasonist Columbian lady but the rest of the list are of people that are trying to help others and most of all not seeking personal glory. They are just trying to make the world better for others.

I do not know what goes into the decision for the Peace Prize winner but I had thought it was more than a good line of BS. So far from Obama he has spent us further in debt than any other President, continued Rendition where we do not water board our terrorist friends we just send them to Egypt where they pull out their fingernails or hook their genitals up to a battery, said he would close GITMO though still has not figured out how, renewed the Patriot Act, taken over GM & Chrysler after allowing them to go into to bankruptcy, spent $3 billion so citizens can buy new cars, allowed unemployment to reach 9.7%.

Great work Nobel Prize givers. By your choice you did very well supporting George Bush’s decisions and policies!!

If you think medical care is expensive now wait until it is free!

Great post, Jeff

The reason Obama got the award is alluded to in your last sentence.  Obama got the prize because he's not George Bush.
