On Thursday's Late Show, David Letterman recounted how he testified before a Manhattan grand jury earlier in the day about how a man, whom he did not identify, left a package in his car three weeks ago and subsequently demanded $2 million or he would write a screenplay and book detailing, in Letterman's words, “all the terrible things that I do” – specifically, “that I have had sex with women who work for me on this show. Now, my response to that is: Yes I have.” (In March, Letterman married the mother of his five-year-old son.)

Just before midnight EDT, TMZ.com posted:

TMZ has learned the identity of the alleged extortionist who was arrested today for attempted grand larceny in the first degree. His name is Robert Halderman. He's 51 years old and lives in Norwalk, CT. Halderman has a business in Manhattan, where he was arrested today. CBS just issued a statement saying the suspect is an employee of "48 Hours." Halderman has been suspended pending results of the investigation.

Radar Online, in “EXCLUSIVE: Man Arrested For Extortion Lived With Woman Who Slept With Letterman,” reported: “An NYPD source has told RadarOnline.com that the suspect under arrest in the David Letterman extortion case was a producer for CBS’s 48 Hours, Robert Halderman. Halderman often went by his middle name Joe...”

Film.com lists a “Joe Halderman” as a “producer” since 2005 for 48 Hours.

Deadline Hollywood posted this statement from CBS:

CBS was made aware of an ongoing police investigation involving David Letterman and an employee at 48 Hours, who was subsequently arrested earlier today on charges of attempted grand larceny in the first degree. CBS is cooperating fully with the authorities and the employee has been suspended pending the results of the investigation. Mr. Letterman addressed the issue during the show’s broadcast this evening, and we believe his comments speak for themselves.

David Letterman .... Sexual Predator

I think this is perfect. David Letterman, makes sexual jokes about others and here he is boinking his staff.

In all other businesses, this is sexual harassment and most executives would be canned. But, this is the entertaiment industry and the women he has had sex with are probably either wearing the sex as a badge of honour (like groupies to rock bands) or are afraid to file sexual harassment charges because they would be blackballed in the industry.

Letterman is a sexual predator who sexually harasses his female staff. Simple.

Just like Roman Polanski is a child rapist, Letterman is a sexual predator.

However, his "star" status will cleanse him.

Isn't is just wonderful.

just more evidence

This is just more evidence of the fall of Western Civilization as we know it. Liberals have no morals. They have no sense of right and wrong. They have no self control. They hate authority, except when they can use it to pummel those who don't agree with their sick view of the world. Dave's schtick is old and tired. His skits are lame. I guess he's too busy getting it with the staffers to be funny anymore. Bye Dave. Leno is looking better all the time.

To think that...

...any woman would drop trau for this gap-toothed prune is astonishing. Will he be doing Viagra commercials now?

Money, power, prestige -

Money, power, prestige - that's what they want.

I wonder if Leno will make a joke about this.....

You make an excellent point, philipjames

Letterman fits the description of a sexual predator in the workplace.  As the 'boss,' he has leverage over his employees, and therefore any sexual behavior with them is misconduct and sexual harassment.

Now, can a sexual predator who has cheated on his own significant-other/wife/mother of his son, continue to get laughs when he mocks the family of Sarah Palin? (Let's not forget the crack about A-Rod 'doing' her 13 year-old daughter at Yankee Stadium).

We'll have to wait and see, but I think that while his fans may forgive and even empathize with him, his image has been tarnished.  He's lost his edge years ago, and now he just comes across as pathetic.

Leno could get a good week's worth of jokes out of Letterman's plight, but he probably won't hit him too heavily out of professional courtesy.

WORLD WIDE PANTS

Looks like World Wide Pants are around Dave's ankles.

Don't you just hate it when bad things happen to good people! - HA

I am feel quite the flush of

I feel quite the flush of schadenfruede wash over my body. And I am NOT going to feel sorry for him. He deserves everything that'll be coming his way.

Dave, you should know, being in the business you're in; "you mess with the bull, and you'll get the horns."

That was the weirdest

That was the weirdest announcement  I have ever seen on TV. I don't know why he told this on his show in between jokes. Karma is a b!tch.

Karma

Ain't it d1carter!!! Couldn't happen to a better/nicer guy!

This warrants a grand larceny charge?

So this CBS employee gets a grand larceny charge for threatening to tell the truth about how Letterman treats his female employees?  Halderman gets prosecuted for larceny, and Letterman gets off scott-free after admitting to probable sexual harassment.  This is a new low, even for CBS.

And compare Letterman to Rather.  Dan Rather apparently, and knowingly, used forged documents in an attempt to affect the outcome of a US presidential election, and in the process effectively depriving me of my civil rights.  And he was only asked to resign.

Poor Halderman.  He is being prosecuted for doing the type of investigative expose' that the hacks on 60 minutes are normally given an Emmy award for.

"The problem with political jokes is they get elected." -Henry Cate VII (?)

Poor Halderman my aunt

Poor Halderman my aunt fanny, the man is charged with grand larceny for offering to bury the story in exchange for two million dollars. If he had simply gone public with what he knew it would be a different story. No heroes here.

I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs or insanity for everyone, but they've always worked for me. - Hunter S. Thompson

Beautiful!

 Typical
hypocritical liberal behavior here.  Nothing new.  Nothing to see.

Letterman can kis my...oh, why even bother anymore...

Delicious

This comes so closely on the heels of the show where Dave and Barack simpered at each other affectionately.  Maybem metrosexual Dave would like to boink the feminine president.  After Polanski, who would be surprised?

Generalizing

A confession: I caught myself being a jerk. Forgive me as I explain. My first reaction to the Letterman thing was to lump it into another example of Liberal Celebrity Weirdness. In just the last few days ...

  • We discover that the Phillips family (Mackenzie, John) has gone through incest. Amazingly, they admit it started as rape, but soon enough they all just adjusted to it.
  • Roman Polanski was arrested for a depraved rape of a child, but Hollywood wants us to, well, adjust to it and let Polanski alone.
  • Now, Letterman confesses to an apparent lack of sexual control. He tries to spin the story potting himself in the role of victim - menaced by being blackmailed. But as for Letterman being a sexual predator? We're supposed to overlook that?

I was going to wonder publicly, what's wrong with these people? Don't these incidents show that something is out of whack with that whole crowd? However ...

I've also been following another annoying development in our public conversation. Lately, have you noticed that our liberal friends have been pointing to the very small fraction of kooks and whackos who show up at otherwise-conservative public events? We have a march of maybe hundreds of thousands of people in DC, but what does the media focus on? The five people who carry Hitler or racist signs. Why do they focus on the bad five when there are hundreds of thousands of good marchers to choose from?

It's because they're trying to use the small percentage to invalidate and delegitimize the whole.

Perfect example: I just read the Roger Ebert post. He openly admits that's what he's doing. He spends his whole op-ed complaining about a small fraction, but he only dwells on that small fraction to cast the rest as equally fascist or racist.

The sin is generalizing, and we do it all the time. It's sloppy thinking, and lazy thinking. It's following your emotions and prejudices and pretending it's really an argument. We all do it, frequently. Like I said: I found myself doing it.

So ... what does Letterman's personal depravity say about liberals and the political Left? After reflecting on it ... I revise my opinion. It says Nothing. Letterman's just an aberrant crank these days. Let the analysis stay with him as an individual, and not generalize it broadly. He's a jerk. That's all it means.

KC...

I hope I can take the time to follow up on this later, because it is such an important issue with me, and it deserves more amplification than I can possibly provide in the few moments before having to wrap things up for the night.

Generalizing is no sin, but it is a disturbing, dangerous and growing phenomenon encompassing the entire political spectrum, crippling debate and poisoning discourse.

I have read Ebert's piece twice, and despite some imprecise language, to no one's great surprise [I'm sure] fail to see the same degree of broad demonizing brush strokes that you, Mr. Weiss, and no doubt the vast majority of NBers detect.

But, I'll continue this later...if at all possible tomorrow.

G'night...Jer

I look forward to it

This is the peril of asynchronous conversation - responding at different times. Ah, the modern world ...

Sheeze KC...

Thanks a lot KC...

I was so enjoying reading of that miserable hypocrite Letterman's' troubles...but I hafta admit your analysis of the situation is spot on...<:~(

We gotta find a new planet...

Yeah, I know

If it makes you feel any better, all it means is that Letterman's troubles don't prove anything about the rest of the liberal crowd.  However, as a statement about Letterman, it still shows that he's really a titanic jerk.

Nazi signs....

I tend to wonder how many of those signs were carried by people who were hired by MediaMatters or some other Soros sponsered group to cast the image of people who are angry over out of control government as insane, racist, and Republican. Next time around, the people carrying those signs should be photographed and investigated. My money is on them being less than honest about who they are...

~The thing is..

While Letterman's behavior says nothing about liberals, the way liberals respond to his behavior..says everything about them.

That high-pitched scream you hear is the lying leftist under my heel.

I'll just add these episodes have a way of flushing out the licentious avante garde who incredulously act as though they've thought the whole thing through and see much ado about nothing.

Whoopi opines on Polanski and exposes herself.  A crowd applauds for Letterman and certain inferences can be drawn.

We may not know the shape of the curve, but I wouldn't say we're very far off the mark when we attempt to describe it.

Avant Garde

I like your "avant garde" comment. I'd agree that Hollywood imagines themselves the avant garde. They dismiss "bourgeois" values, not because they've acquired superior philosophical and moral perspectives themselves, but merely because they want to portray themselves as superior.

Polanski's arrest threatens them, because it means we're holding them to values they consider beneath them. It threatens their sense of being special and superior.

It annoys me to hear these post-pubescents lecture us about morality, as if they knew a moral philosophy from a salami. At least Jean Paul Sartre studied and philosophized that the world is absurd before he shacked up with Simone de Beauvoir(sp?). To hear "artists" condescend to the rest of us is hilarious. Read a book on morality before you lecture us on it. (And performing a play written by yet-another-tortured-artist doesn't count as moral reflection.)

→ Trained monkeys

The ability to act includes such skills as remembering where to stand, when to sit, what to say, and when to say it.

Do-overs are the rule, rather than the exception, so any imputed wisdom toward thespians is ill-placed.

LOL!

I know. Can you imagine a soldier in Afghanistan, under heavy fire, stop the process and say, "Can someone tell me my line?"

Most of us don't get "takes."

Generalization is no sin.

Generalization is no sin. Incorrect generalization is the sin.

What is liberalism? Liberalism is first, relativism. It holds that there is no fixed meaning to written documents (the Constitution, the law, the Bible); this leads straightaway to moral relativism. You only need to look at liberal clergy and their response to abortion to intuit the process.

So what does Lettermen's lack of morality, lack of judgement, and lack of honesty say about the Left? That he is a shining example of everything that they believe and that they practice.

He is representative.

And when those same

And when those same failures are displayed by individuals on the Right, I suppose it's simply random aberrant behavior.  I get it.  It's entirely appropriate to generalize about liberals, but not about conservatives.  Interesting set of rules there, Tenebrous.

I think charging men in positions of power with sexual harassment had the rug pulled out from under it when no one complained about sexual harassment in the President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky affair.

If President Clinton's actions didn't constitute sexual harassment of a subordinate, nothing does.

The Law?

Is it now legal in Leftist circles to sexually harass your subordinates?

In most modern work environments, it is against work rules to tell off-color jokes much less boink the help.

The allowed and honored exceptions always seem to be Democratic presidents like Bill Clinton and creeps like "Do as I pontificate not as I do" Letterman.

This is one of those moments when supporters of Letterman need to look in their morality mirrors and try once again to see what is right.

You old Leftist "if it feels good do it" hippies continue to support on-the-job sexual harrassment, incest with John Phillips and pedophilia with Polanski.

That said, I do sometimes have to sit back and marvel at karma. Stuff like this is why they say it's a bitch!

Liberals from Hollywood and New York says that a 48 yr old giving pills and booze to a 13 yr is okay.  Now Super Dave is going to be looked upon as a victim due to this extortion plot.

Oh boy.  I'm disappointed

Oh boy.

I'm disappointed that Letterman has had affairs. Yeah, he wasn't married, but for all intents and purposes, he might as well have been. But he's human. People make mistakes.

But I think it's hilarious the assumptions and judgements made by people. "Sexual predator"? Really? As if he should have to register with the local authorities. Another case of liberals thinking sleeping around is OK? As if Republicans have never had affairs.

People always love to compare Letterman to Carson, and say how much classier Carson was. Guess what. Carson had three marriages and lots of infidelity.

Balboa makes the distinction that none of these episodes occurred since he's been married to his current wife.

I can't disprove his claim, so until such time as I can, there is a difference between Letterman and Sanford.

~Yes, there is a difference

Sanford "fell in love" with one woman, who did not work for him.

Letterman used his position to score with his underlings.

They're both immature jerks.

That high-pitched scream you hear is the lying leftist under my heel.

http://newsbusters.o...

Right, chose, just not quite the difference you have in mind...

Let's also note Sanford is not the Duke of Windsor nor the tortured protagonist in a story of unrequited love.  He made a mockery of his marital vows, cheated on his wife, abandoned his constituents, and went AWOL from his job of governing his state.  Other than that, he seems like a pretty swell fellow.

Jer

The difference to me is that

The difference to me is that Republicans claim the moral high ground, then they get caught cheating. Letterman makes no such claims. He makes fun of others for cheating, yup. I don't think he'd say no one should make fun of him for his affairs.

Like I said, I'm disappointed that he had sex with employees, while in a relationship with someone else. That shows bad judgement and decision-making. Sanford made bad decisions, too. Sanford is human, too.
