President Barack Obama's last-minute decision to fly Thursday to Copenhagen to pitch Chicago's bid for the 2016 summer Olympic games excited broadcast network journalists Monday night. “The Olympic motto is 'swifter, higher, stronger,'” fill-in CBS Evening News anchor Harry Smith reminded viewers before trumpeting: “Apparently, President Obama is taking that to heart. In a change of plans today, the President decided he will go to Denmark to try to win the 2016 summer games for his hometown.” On NBC, Savannah Guthrie championed Obama's credentials:
From his candidate days to earlier this month on the White House lawn, where he picked up some pointers on fencing, the President has established himself as a kind of Olympics super-fan. Now with Chicago locked in a tight battle with Tokyo, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro, and their heads of state making the trip to Copenhagen, the hometown pressure for Obama to go was intense.
ABC, which pointed out how “no President has ever made such an appeal,” even led with the development. “Olympic bid,” Charles Gibson teased, “the President decides to travel thousands of miles for a last-minute personal pitch, hoping to bring the 2016 Olympics to Chicago.”

The International Olympic Committee votes on Friday, deciding which city will host the 2016 summer games: Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro or Tokyo. All four cities have lobbied for years. Flying to Copenhagen Thursday night to make the final appeal for Chicago will be none other than President Obama. No President has ever made such an appeal. His trip to Denmark -- it will be a quick one -- was announced today by the White House.
(CBS led with Iran's missile firing and NBC started with efforts to stem the spread of the flu.)

Nothing is quite as awesome in sports as hearing the announcer at a medal ceremony say "Ladies and Gentlemen, the national anthem of the United States of America" after one of ours bags a gold. Even better when all three flags raised are the Stars and Stripes. Every time the Olympics comes around, I am begging for Team USA to make the local Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for medals ceremonies and for the Star-Spangled Banner to be played so often that the locals are humming it in their sleep.
But, correct me if I am wrong...did Carter visit the IOC in 1978 to encourage them to pick Los Angeles in 1984? (Yes, I know that it was the only city in the running...) Did Bush the Elder visit the IOC to curry their favor of picking Atlanta for the 1996 games when that decision was made late in September 1990? Did Nixon use his lobbying power to get the Winter Games for Denver (who was supposed to host the 1976 Games) and Lake Placid? Did Clinton beg the approval of the IOC for the Salt Lake City Games of 2002?
Juan Williams was whining that Rightists are just using this issue to further pick on His Majesty The Shahinshah. If nothing else was going on in the world of great importance, I might agree. BUT His Majesty The Shahinshah has a LOT more to worry about than seeing to it that Chicago gets the Games. (Would He be going through this trouble if the American city in question were, say, San Francisco, Seattle, or Houston? Somehow I doubt that.) Try worrying about what is going on in Afghanistan, for starters.
And this has the potential to get ugly for Him anyway. For the Winter Games, your picks are fairly limited: you need some mountains neaby, and a city where that phenomenon called "snow" occurs regularly. The Summer Games, by contrast, can be held all over the place. Rio, Madrid, and Tokyo are as good as Chicago is for picks. And Tokyo has hosted once before, in 1964.
As much as I would love to see yet another American city get it - what would the Olympics be without the United States? - a huge part of me would love to see Rio get it. Why? Brazil has never hosted a Games before, and they would be the first in a Latin American country in 48 years. (Let's just hope there are no massive student riots there right before the Games as happened in Mexico City!) It would be kinda cool to see them get the Games. Spain has hosted a Games in 1992, Japan in 1964. Additionally, since London is hosting the 2012 Games, for that reason alone I'd toss European cities out altogether until 2020 if I were king for a day.
And yes, the fact that it might get His Majesty The Shahinshah to wake the hell up and work on other more pertinent foreign policy issues to see Chicago get punked in favor of, say, Rio, would be a good thing.
(Before some of you start cussing: back in 1990 when Atlanta got the Games, my first respose was "Couldn't they wait until 2000?" I personally thought that Athens should have been a LOCK for the 1996 Games, they being the 100th anniversary Games. If, say, Athens had gotten the '96 Games and Atlanta had gotten 2004, that would have been PERFECT.)
