ABC, CBS and NBC all led Wednesday night with President Barack Obama's address at the United Nations, but Katie Couric was the most effusive in trumpeting how Obama marked the end of the Bush era as she teased the CBS Evening News: “Tonight, the President tells the world America's 'go it alone' policy is over.” Her glowing lead:
Good evening, everyone. President Obama says we have reached a “pivotal moment.” In his UN debut today, he challenged the world to work together to solve the problems facing all of us. And in a break with the “go it alone policies” of his predecessor, he said the United States is ready to begin a new chapter of international cooperation.
On NBC, Andrea Mitchell followed a similar script: “It was the President's first speech to the United Nations and it marked a very stark departure from the policies of George W. Bush, as the President called for a new era of engagement with the rest of the world, reaching out to new friends and old foes.”
While Mitchell highlighted how “the President was cheered for his decision to close Guantanamo and stop abusive interrogations,” Jake Tapper, on ABC's World News, characterized that as apologizing for his own country:
The President also sounded apologetic at times about past U.S. behavior, and he rattled off a list of his own reversals of Bush administration policies: Ending torture, ordering the closure of the prison at Guantanamo Bay, working to end the war in Iraq.

September 23, 2009 - 20:10 ET by KC MulvilleIt wasn't that the United States never asked for help. They turned us down.
However, what Obama is saying is different. For Obama, unilateralism means that he's willing to allow the international community to veto initiatives that the US deems important. He won't invade or take action against a country unless the rest of the world approves.
It's one thing to respect international law, which we ought to do. But if you surrender your ability to exercise your rightful actions under international law so you can curry favor with other nations, that's a surrender of your sovereignty. Obama is willing to allow other countries to help decide what America should do ... so they will like him. Our sovereignty is another item thrown under the bus for the sake of Obama's narcissism.

September 23, 2009 - 23:12 ET by shawn228Many nations like Canada went in with us to Afghanistan, but did not go in with us to Iraq. Many places in the world were not convinced the weapons inspectors had enought time to do their job. Despite many excellent threads here by respectable posters, the official statement from the Bush administration are that no WMD's were found. "Yes I know Mr. Shy, who cares if we found them right?" "and Yes JWF, I know that they had the potential to make wmd's and they what was found was dangerous"
However, Since that was the official statement, many places in the world said it was wrong to go into Iraq because of WMD and the only argument the Bush adminstration had was that it was good to take out a brutal dictator. If the Bush administration statement argued that we found wmd I would love to see it.
The fact that we did not find WMD is the reason why we are where we are with Iran right now. Since the rest of the world feels the US lost credibility on WMD, the Iranians knew they could not find support to invade them and decided to build up their nucleaur plants, strenthen their army and fight a cheap war by arming Iraqis with IED's

Wow! History revision alert!
September 23, 2009 - 23:26 ET by jondelwicheHow quickly we forget the fact that Saddam allowed a major haven for terrrorists. Or maybe mislead is the proper term......
There is no doubt people like Yasin, Abbas, and Nidal were residing in Iraq--a virtual who's who of terrorism.
While Al queda struck a blow on 911, there is no doubt that Terror Central was located in Iraq from the 1980's to 2003.
The 2003 SOTU speech left no doubt, with or without WMD's, that Saddam--AND all his terrorist friends-- needed to go:
"And this Congress and the American people must recognize another threat. Evidence from intelligence sources, secret communications and statements by people now in custody reveal that Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists, including members of Al Qaida. Secretly, and without fingerprints, he could provide one of his hidden weapons to terrorists, or help them develop their own.
Before September the 11th, many in the world believed that Saddam Hussein could be contained. But chemical agents, lethal viruses and shadowy terrorist networks are not easily contained.
Imagine those 19 hijackers with other weapons and other plans, this time armed by Saddam Hussein. It would take one vial, one canister, one crate slipped into this country to bring a day of horror like none we have ever known.
We will do everything in our power to make sure that that day never comes.
Some have said we must not act until the threat is imminent. Since when have terrorists and tyrants announced their intentions, politely putting us on notice before they strike?
If this threat is permitted to fully and suddenly emerge, all actions, all words and all recriminations would come too late. Trusting in the sanity and restraint of Saddam Hussein is not a strategy, and it is not an option."
I also thought that that Sadamm had wmd
September 23, 2009 - 23:34 ET by shawn228.....and from reading many informative threads from NB authors, I am non convinced he did not have them.
The bottom line is that the official US government statement is we did not find them. So to the rest of the world, we were wrong and we invaded a country on a wrong assumption and that unfortunately affects our credibility in getting support to invade Iran who really might be making WMD'S. We would have blown their facilities to Kingdom come by now if we were not tied up in Iraq. They never would have dared pull this crap, but the Bush administration could not do anything except draw a line in the said, which the Iranians kept crossing. North Korea not only crossed it, but completely broke it and now they have nukes.

Post-decisional regret is a luxury lending itself more to revisionist history than a path forward, hence, all the whiners who acted like they weren't really all for it anyway.
Even though it was a yes-or-no vote.
Biggest puke in the whole gaggle of them was John Kerry. Here's a weasel who went to Vietnam and came back with "They Lied To Me!!" All over his road to the Senate.

With great respect, I disagree
September 24, 2009 - 01:47 ET by KC Mulville(This point leads to my larger argument. Here goes.) At the time of the UN vote, those countries didn't know either way.
There is no "international community" of altruists seeking justice as a common ideal. They're just individual countries seeking their own interests. And frankly, that's the way it should be. The task isn't to get "international approval" as if it was an imprimatur from the pope, as a central and respectable moral authority. Other countries, even when they sit together in the UN, do not have a moral authority. These countries will seek their own self-interest. Well, fine, treat them that way. Don't ask for their moral permission.
When Obama flatters the UN with speeches like this, he claims that they have an authority that we must obey. No. They don't. I deny and resist that idea: they have no authority.

I didn't see what Ahmadinnerjacket said, no need to, it'll be the same BS that we've heard from him. Sorry SOB should have been arrested and tried upon arrival to this country for his involvment with the hostage crisis during the Carter years.
I've been trying not to be angry, hoping against hope that people will get the idea that Soetoro is the sorriest president ever, but unless a revolution is started against this guy especially after he SURRENDERED to the world at large, we are going to be completely screwed and anything resembling our country's spirit will be all but dissolved.
Dammit to Teller's deepest hell, I'm PISSED at this crap, and not enough is happening to stop these despots that are in the oft-not-occupied White House and controlling Congress. What's it going to take?
Sorry, this crap is getting old.

Then we can expect the lame duck LOTUS to sulk in the White House as the tide of socialism is turned back and the era of Carter II ends on 01/20/2013.

Dont suggest Iraq you hypocrite, we documented 9 years of violations by Iraq, we got a Resolution pass condeming them from the UN, the UN for cripes sake. Both houses voted in favor in true bipartisain fashion. And something around 30-40 countries particapated. So what the heck are you talking about Kate?

Obama's rhetoric versus his record.........
September 23, 2009 - 22:07 ET by big.league.sliderObama says as long as he is President, the U.S. won't "go it alone". Unfortunately, not one single leader of a free, democratic country seems interested in helping him with the hard work currently going on in Afghanistan or Iraq. G.W. Bush was constantly maligned by the left as a unilateralist, hated by the rest of the world. But Bush was able to put together and maintain a meaningful coalition of 39 countries (each contributing at various times) to go after the extremists in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Obama, who the left ostensibly claims is a transformational world diplomat and universally beloved and respected , has not managed to convince a single democratic government to contribute to the ongoing war on terror. In fact, in his nine months as President, his only foreign policy action of consequence has been to give our loyal and faithful allies in Poland and the Czech Republic the old Neville

Does anyone remember Neville Chamberlain?
September 23, 2009 - 22:45 ET by JimcinscHe was the British Prime Minister who attempted to appease Adolph Hitler. History has shown that PM Chamberlain failed miserably.
It's been said that those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it.
President Obama's track record as a student of Marxism and socialism shows that he's a devotee to social systems that have been proven to be failures over and over again. If a system of thought proves to be a failure, why follow it?
Is Mr. Obama the USA's Neville Chamberlain?
History, once again, will prove the truth of this debacle of "leadership."
