Media minds think alike. ABC: “It was the shout heard 'round the world.” CBS: “It was the shout heard 'round the world.” NBC, slightly creative: “The outburst heard 'round the world” and the “heckle heard 'round the world.” Congressman Joe Wilson's “you lie” shout during President Obama's Wednesday address to Congress on health care animated the Thursday evening newscasts, though it at least prompted ABC and NBC, but not CBS, to grudgingly take up, briefly, Wilson's contention illegal immigrants would receive health benefits.
“As the President spoke last night, there was a stunning moment. As the President tried to refute criticisms of his health care reform, a Republican Congressman from South Carolina yelled out 'you lie,'” ABC anchor Charles Gibson announced. On CBS, Katie Couric maintained “Presidents appearing there as respected guests have been interrupted before by boos and hisses, but this was different. A Congressman last night calling a President an outright liar to his face. Just the latest indication of how ugly the debate over reforming health care has gotten.”
Brian Williams teased the NBC Nightly News: “On our broadcast tonight, the speech on health care and the outburst heard 'round the world.” In the subsequent story Kelly O'Donnell portrayed “a stunning outburst. South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson accused the President of lying in a fit of anger that reverberated today.”
Following O'Donnell, Williams brought aboard former GOP Congressman Joe Scarborough of MSNBC's Morning Joe to decry Wilson's outburst as the “perfect ending to a long, ugly summer.” Scarborough asserted that “while the base may love it, while Rush Limbaugh may say, 'hey, this is great,' it's one more example of this Republican Party being seen as a party that lacks temperament.”
However “rude” Wilson was, O'Donnell acknowledged he “reflects a view Republican leaders stood by today. While the President insists health care reform will not cover illegal immigrants, Republicans argue there is a loophole because the House bill fails to require proof of citizenship.”
In a larger “fact check” piece, ABC's Jake Tapper also took up Wilson's claim: “Would the President's reforms apply to illegal immigrants? The answer is no. House and Senate bills say any new government subsidies to purchase health insurance would only apply to legal citizens.” Tapper noted, however, “the issue is more complicated than that. When illegal immigrants to go emergency rooms, the charges are often paid for my emergency Medicaid, which at least one Democratic bill may expand, though today the White House reiterated the President's point.”
From the Thursday night, September 10 newscasts:
ABC's World News:
CHARLES GIBSON: As the President spoke last night, there was a stunning moment. As the President tried to refute criticisms of his health care reform, a Republican Congressman from South Carolina yelled out “you lie.” Well, there's a rough and tumble to Washington politics, but so, too, is there a history of civility and respect, especially for the President of the United States. Or, until recent years, there was. Here's David Wright.
DAVID WRIGHT: It was the shout heard 'round the world-
CONGRESSMAN JOE WILSON: You lie!
WRIGHT: Or at least the nation's capital. Today the President was magnanimous....
CBS Evening News:
KATIE COURIC: Good evening, everyone. The fallout continues from that extraordinary moment in the United States Congress. Presidents appearing there as respected guests have been interrupted before by boos and hisses, but this was different. A Congressman last night calling a President an outright liar to his face. Just the latest indication of how ugly the debate over reforming health care has gotten. Today brought apologizing and forgiving, but so far, no one's forgetting. From Capitol Hill, here's Nancy Cordes.
PRESIDENT OBAMA: This, too, is false.
NANCY CORDES: It was the shout heard 'round the world.
OBAMA: The reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.
CONGRESSMAN JOE WILSON: You lie!
CORDES: Two words, “you lie,” bellowed by 62-year-old Republican Representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina as the President defended his health care plan. Watch Speaker Pelosi behind the President.
WILSON: You lie!
CORDES: Visibly startled by what both parties agree was an unprecedented breech of protocol....
NBC Nightly News:
BRIAN WILLIAMS TEASED: On our broadcast tonight, the speech on health care and the outburst heard 'round the world.....
Good evening. President Obama set out last night to deliver a sharp and direct speech on health care, one final big push for reform. However, it was a sharp and direct comment from a Republican Congressman in the audience that made a lot of news last night. He apologized to the President today....
Now, we go back to the heckle heard 'round the world. Congressman Joe Wilson was not widely known before last night. He is now. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell cover the Hill for us and joins us from there tonight. Kelly, good evening.
KELLY O'DONNELL: Good evening, Brian. I've talked to Members of Congress who have been here for decades and they say the kind of disruption we saw last night simply hasn't happened before. Now the issue that got a five-term Republican so upset actually touched off a wider conversation today about illegal immigrants and health care. It was a stunning outburst. South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson accused the President of lying in a fit of anger that reverberated today....
Wilson's complaint, however rude it was, reflects a view Republican leaders stood by today. While the President insists health care reform will not cover illegal immigrants, Republicans argue there is a loophole because the House bill fails to require proof of citizenship.
SENATOR JON KYL: So if there is verification of eligibility required, it is quite likely -- indeed I would say probable -- that a lot of people who are not eligible, including illegal immigrants, will end up receiving the benefits of the legislation.
O'DONNELL: Brian, this is complicated because the bill, as it's written now is explicit saying illegal immigrants will not get any health care benefits in reform. But Republicans say, they're concerned about cracks in the system. An example is times when illegal immigrants have managed to get benefits like Medicaid. Now, this has caused such a fuss that tonight Senate Democrats concede there is confusion and the last committee that's working on legislation says it will try to do more to be specific about requiring proof of citizenship.

September 10, 2009 - 21:17 ET by LindamaeNow it can be told! I was to blame. I listened to Obama's spinning and when he started on the illegal aliens, I said to my husband, "He's lying." Mere seconds later, my newest hero,, Joe Wilson voiced my comment from his seat in Washington. I never knew that I had such power. Actually, I think it was the combined power of all of us who watched the dog and pony show - muttering the same words at Obama's blatant lies to the American public. He changed a few words to protect himself but told one whopper after another. I know we all are to blame for sending our thoughts to Washington and Wilson's being the only one sensitive enough to voice them. Good for you, Joe.
Why haven't the Republicans replied that Joe was caught up in the innacuracies of Obama's comments and just expressed his love of the truth. Steele has to learn to work it. Make lemonade. The situation literally cut Obama at the knees and ruined his preaching. Whatever he said later was under the "you lie" umbrella. Joe should be applauded.
Anyone who complains should be made to watch the times Bush was booed for telling the truth at these sessions.

September 10, 2009 - 21:31 ET by alwaysconJoe Wilson is a coward who, while the entire world was watching, APPOLOGIZED today. If he had any integrity, he would've stood up last night and said more than "liar". He would have stepped before the cameras today and said "The president lied to us last night." Instead, he wilted like a flower "Oh, I'm so sorry..." We don't need more people like Joe Wilson, we need people who have the integrity to stand by their words and call out this president as the liar he is, not some high-school heckler who shouts out things from the security of a crowd.
Was in an 'apology'?
September 10, 2009 - 21:43 ET by SlyrrI agree, I wish Wilson hadn't apologized. At the least, I wish he had cunningly phrased it so it sounded exactly like one of Obama's 'non-apologies'.
It would have been SOOO rich to have him standing in front of a breathless liberal press corp, with their tongues hanging out, waiting with slobbering mouths to hear him grovel.
Only to have him say, 'I promised to apologize - and hear it is. I'm sorry I called Obama a liar during his speech. I should have waited till AFTER his speech to call him a liar.' and agian, 'I am indeed sorry. I'm so very, very sorry that Obama lied to the american people. My heart is filled with the deepest remorse that Obama is such a liar...'
But even so, what he did was brilliant. Even with his apology. He may have planned the outburst because he knew it would throw every lib in the room and across the media back on their heels.
Yesterday's speech was supposed to be Obama putting the protesters in the doghouse. It was supposed to be Obama godly voice from Mt. Olympus, squashing the protestors beneath his mighty heel while everyone grabbed their ankles and waited for the reaming with hushed voices.
And what happened instead? Wilson exposed Obama as a short tempered brat, on national TV, in front of the entire nation. Him, and Biden, Pelosi, et. al stood there flabbergasted and stunned as what was supposed to be a protest-free gathering was drowned out by the loudest protest of all - a simple two-word shout to our two-faced president.
Now they're scrambling around doing damage control for yet another of his disastrous speeches. Wilson may have apologized, but he accomplished his mission. All the world heard him called a liar - right in the middle of a speech where he was ordering his critics to shut up and go away...
Always~
September 10, 2009 - 21:59 ET by Georgia GirlA "high school heckler who shouts out things from the security of a crowd"??? Do you really think that was a COMFORTABLE place for him to do such a thing? Essentially, he was in front of the entire world...the President...and all those he has to continually see/work with on a variety of issues. After he did that, you could cut the tension with a knife in that room -- in case you didn't notice. Now there was a place he would catch it from all sides from doing what he did -- talk about guts! Then he apologized out of graciousness -- on what was the right thing to do for his party and the country, in the narrow scope of it being disruptive. It does not weaken what he said one bit. On the contrary, I think it only gives him more class, without taking away the very clarifying truth in his outburst.
Joe Wilson was on "Hannity" tonight. He stands by his convictions. He was articulate, convincing, humble and strong on why he feels the President is being untruthful -- and backed it up.
Again, he had apologized for his outburst because of the decorum aspect, and he did that as a team player who could see the overall picture of his actions. How much easier would it have been for him to stubbornly dig in on the outburst aspect, for the sake of his own interests?
He's no coward. On the contrary -- he's a strong-hearted, wise man who has the kind of guts and good sense I've not seen in any politician in an incredibly long time.
Joe Wilson apologized because his leadership asked...
September 11, 2009 - 01:10 ET by jawebster1him too, but he made it very clear, he was not backing down from his belief Obama was indeed lying. Did everyone notice Pelosi's look when she heard Wilson? You would have thought her last remaining supply of botox had just been confiscated. Jim Webster
I dunno
September 11, 2009 - 10:01 ET by jon_torlinAt least he's not backing down, but if it had been me, I would have risked getting censured (not to be confused with censored as it commonly happens) and just say "hell no I won't apologize!"
Give you a personal example here: Just recently, an employee that's worked here for years finally decided to retired. (I'm saying finally for me, not for her) Over the years, she's treated me and a few others like absolute crap, a very toxic person, but some people have chosen to look the other way. Granted, I wasn't beholden to that person, but had to interact every so often (under protest, mind you) for one reason or another. It'd take too long to give examples, but I'm sure some of you on here have seen people like that at one time or another, right?
So she decides to retire and the department decides to have a party for her, I got invited. I said "No thanks!" Of course, that was after I got turned down my request to hold the door for her as she walks out, ya know? And then a card was passed around for people to sign, and even those she's treated like crap signed it wishing her well. Do I sign it? HELL NO! I even told the secretary that, and if the boss wants to censure me for it, fine!(He understands and won't censure me)
There are times to back down in certain situations, but if it violates being true to yourself, you NEED to stick to your guns. Sure, some people might say "oh, that's not good decorum, that's not a good attitude to have." Guess what, it is what it is, but this is who I am and you will always know where I stand. I make a lousy politician, ya know? I don't kowtow to the BS and I like to think I'm a fair guy who sticks to his guns. That doesn't mean I can't change my mind about some things, but once I have a firm belief in something, it'll be real real tough.
The same should be what Joe Wilson did. Yeah, heat of the moment and all that, but you know, he played his hand, he should have ridden it all the way through instead of "Oh sorry, can I try that again?"
That's my take on it.

September 11, 2009 - 09:18 ET by dscottWho was being rude? The man who called out the untruths, mistatements, and material misreprentations OR the man who described the opponents of his proposals and salesmanship as WILD CLAIMS and LYING in a not so subtle swipe at REPUBLICANs.
We spend one-and-a-half times more per person on health care than any other country, but we aren't any healthier for it. This is one of the reasons that insurance premiums have gone up three
times faster than wages. It's why so many employers — especially small
businesses — are forcing their employees to pay more for insurance, or
are dropping their coverage entirely.
A falsehood combined with a fact, we as a whole are healthier by the fact based on the stats that under the dismal cancer survival rates in Canada and England under government health care over 300,000 women would be dead under their regime of medicine, from breast cancer alone over 10 years OR 30,000 a year! Can you imagine all the other people who would needlessly die from all cancers???? Being DEAD is NOT healthier!!!! Well duh, it costs money for cancer treatments which the Canadians and British saved through rationing by delaying or denying treatment. The second falsehood combined with fact is we are paying more in insurance because we spend more - A HALF TRUTH! we are paying more because Government programs like Medicare, Medicaid under pay their bills and illegals don't pay their bills, WE THE PEOPLE are forced to pay MORE due to cost shifting.
I have to say that there are arguments to be made for both approaches.
But either one would represent a radical shift that would disrupt the
health care most people currently have.
Another false moral equivalence argument - the solution of the right is too REFORM not CHANGE the system that works for 95% of the population. The solution of the left is to CHANGE the system for the 5% of which most are NOT CITIZENS, NOT REFORM it.
that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off
senior citizens. Such a charge would be laughable if it weren't so
cynical and irresponsible. It is a lie, plain and simple.
So who lied here? Why that was Barack Obama. Whether by design or incompetence, the end result of the panels legislated under HR3200 IS to make the same decisions as in England, delay and denial of treatment based on life expectancy.
The only thing this plan would eliminate is the hundreds of billions of
dollars in waste and fraud, as well as unwarranted subsidies in
Medicare that go to insurance companies — subsidies that do everything
to pad their profits and nothing to improve your care.
An outright falsehood. Since plans like AARP United Health Care give more coverage to seniors than Medicare are the ones he wants to eliminate.
There are so many falsehoods uttered in Obama's speech it would take a missive to identify them all so I only selected the bigger whoppers. There can be only two conclusions to be drawn here: Either Barack Obama is a hopeless liberal demagogue unable to see past his partisan politics and narrow world view OR he is deliberately lying to the American People to enact a socialist agenda. Congressman Wilson concluded the later.

September 11, 2009 - 11:52 ET by dscottOne more point on Obama's speech. Here is an example of cognative dissonance within the very same speech: Obama claimed we are currently spending 1 and half times more for our health care than others. So why does he want to SPEND an ADDITIONAL Trillion over 10 years for healthcare?
If he is not going to spend an additional trillion over ten years then why does he need to raise taxes on the rich and soda drinks?
This kind of inconsistency only occurs when someone is ignorantly babbling a series of talking points or intentionly misleading a group of people whom are thought to be ignorant - LYING.

September 11, 2009 - 10:46 ET by grumpyoldbHow about when the democrats BOO'd President Bush en-masse? How about the code pinko that accused Condoleeza Rice of being a war criminal??
I'm seriously thinking about moving to South Carolina so I can vote for this guy and keep him in office!
That's not a precedent, I guess

September 11, 2009 - 11:35 ET by eaglewingz08Kudos to Rep Joe Wilson for speaking truth to power. From what I've read he's gotten overwhelming support for his statement from his constituents. I understand him having to give an apology as he would have been exiled to Siberia by the democraps or possibly expelled had he not given such an apology (so much for dem's toleration of dissent and protest). As more notable and capable commenters have noted, Joe told the truth and Obama lied and called his opponents liars and worse, in the address to Congress. If the House was going to censure Joe Wilson it should likewise be looking to censure the President for his inappropriate and inflammatory remarks. This teachable moment is also important because when the shoe thrower in the Iraqi Parliament hurled at Pres. Bush, none of the democraps assailing this incident said a word in support of Pres. Bush or decorum in a legislative body towards the President of the USA. In fact they called it the height of propriety and right conduct. So the democraps can't have it both ways, if throwing shoes at our President is ok, then hurling words, a much lesser offense must likewise be proper civil discourse when one disagrees with the President.
kudos for Joe
September 11, 2009 - 12:52 ET by Patriot IIIn my opinion, if the rest of the house had any b--ls, they would have stood and cheered Joe Wilson!!~! blab blama is a liar...any semi competent fool only has to listen to the cull to know that!!!

Sure you can keep your insurance...if you can afford it.
September 11, 2009 - 21:20 ET by ACLUSUXSo let me get this straight. You can keep the insurance you have? Sure!! Every company in America will drop their employee benefits to the bare minimum required by BO. This creates wind fall profit for corporations as they make employees pay more for the coverage they have. Forcing them into the gov't plan...which is cheaper and will never be as good.
Coming to a hospital near you! Foreign doctors with substandard "degrees" will "help" offset the volume of 45 Million people.
Sure you can keep your insurance...if you can afford it.
Lets help the 10 Million or so that really need it.

Could you not hear it it now if this was reversed in anyway...especially with the underage girls they stated were going to be imported for this whorehouse...there would be outrage, heads would roll, blue-ribbon panels would be formed, investigations would have be demanded by the House and Senate until it reached the top, where the buck stops.
Connections, connections...but not if it pertains to the filth in the left, that the tax-payers are forced to feed this beast, and it does start at the top regarding all this mess...as he worked hard for all these years, a perfect puppet, a glad one at that.

September 18, 2009 - 21:47 ET by Georgia GirlI feel your pain. Me too. I guess we just have to keep our spirits up by trying to stay encouraged by all the ways America is getting to the truth on Obama and Company...the healthcare crap, the czars, ACORN, etc. It's all being brought to light -- yeah, soooo much later and slower than we all want, but at least we're stepping in the right direction. We just have to keep up the fight...or die trying! ;)
